Eye exam and employees were fine. 3 months after my visit got text that I owed more money. Called and said that I owed $500.00 more. I had already paid $150.00. Called insurance company. I have been here before and they are nice to you at first. But as time went on for my second annual checkup.....My first appointment was cancelled because I guess the doctor was sick that day (never did find out why). My second appointment was distasteful due to a rude disrespectful demanding receptionist. And my third appointment was cancelled for whatever reason (they never called me to say why). Bottom line, customer service is lacking discipline, staff is rude, and they have lost my entire family's business just by word of mouth. Let me start by saying that I have zero issues with the staff, or the service they provided in store. My problem lies within the billing, which, in turn, lies within the people somewhere along the way. I get a yearly eye exam at Clarkson and have been visiting the Festus Mo location for a few years now. I've always paid my bill the day of service and have never had them bill me for any portion of the service provided. However, this year, I received a bill for $22.50 after I had already paid in full the day of service. When I called their number antalkedlk to billing, I was connected with someone I could barely understand. I asked about the $22.50 and he said that essential, y I paid all but $11.25 for each 2 boxes of contacts. Since I bought 4 boxes, my bill was $22.50. However, he couldn't tell me WHY I owed this because I already paid in full the day of my visit. I said it seems kind of sneaky to allow this surprise billing when the patient paid in full the day of service. He pretty much said, too bad, so sad. When I called the actual Festus office, the lady at the shop said she would look into and said it appears that the balance of $22.90 was for sales tax. Hold on.... wait, $22.90? My bill says $22.50. She then said she would have her manager look into it and call me back the next business day. So, I still have no answers as to why I have a balance left when I paid in full the day of my service. What they did right: I use to LOVE Clarkson Eyecare and have been a customer of theirs for years. The place is clean and the staff is always nice to talk to. They write everything out for you to see so you know exactly what each charge is. The eye exam is painless and the Dr. talks you through each step of the exam process. Where they could improve: Surprise billing. Plain and simple.... if a customer pays in full the day of service, they should NOT be surprised with a bill a month or two down the road. If there was a mistake in the billing, they should be able to tell you exactly where the extra charge is coming from (which nobody can seem to do). Clarkson eye care is a "big box" chain company, and they won't care to lose a customer over $22.50. But if they can't figure out this mystery charge, they will have 5 less patients because I will take my family to another company and hope that this review warns the people who are looking for a new eye care provider. Edit: I read some other reviews on Google after posting mine and what do you know? Looks like surprise billing is their new way for getting your money. Buyer beware..... even if you are paying in full, looks like your bill is going to keep going up. This is a mixed bag review. So I took my daughter there for an eye exam. I know Clarkson Eyecare from their original location on Clarkson Road. I am also retired military on Tricare. I've always known CE as a top notch, eye care center in regard to professional and trustworthy eye doctors and a professional business appearance. Today I will say that my daughter did get a good eye exam but because I've always held them to a higher standard, I have this to say. Upon entering the "store" (yes it looks like a retail store), I can't say the employee appearances were so professional. One girl had tattoos on both arms, one guy had a moppy haircut and not shaven and the doctor had a shaggy unkept beard and mustache. These are all things you couldn't even get away with working at a Quick Trip, because they value their appearance. CE comes off like a Dobbs tire center with locations in every neighborhood. After your exam, you see the sales person with a list of expensive options, all of which should be included with any quality eyeglasses. Also, they have this cool retinal "optiscan" but that's an "up charge", kinda like getting nitrogen in your tires rather than "air". I don't need a retail eye center right in my neighborhood like a convenience store where they charge excessive prices for the convenience. I guess CE has a successful business model (at least for the share holders) but I wish they would focus on the medical provider and professional appearance side of things rather than the "I gotcha, so let me suck you dry" business approach. If I didn't feel like I was getting marketed to by a salesman, and had a more reasonable option for eyewear, I'd have probably bought a few pair of glasses from CE rather than take my prescription and shop my options. read more

Clarkson Eyecare will send a bill to you even when pod in full. I have had this happen multiple times from Clarkson. Their customer service department will claim billing error and or insurance codes improperly entered. However, I believe that they are falsifying bills and hoping customers do not catch it. I had my credit card statement that showed I paid $112 more than what they claimed. It took filing a bbb claim against Clarkson to get them to agree that I, in fact, did not owe more money. I would beware of Clarkson. I will not be returning since this has been a recurring event. Please use caution if you visit any of their locations. I have had issues with the staff not knowing proper billing while in the store, as well as just being rude. I've been to three different locations over several years. I have very good VSP insurance. and never have my lenses and frames cost me more than $250.00 out of pocket. Clarkson wanted $500.00 after eyeglass insurance coverage. prices are extreme expensive to begin with. So go somewhere else that has reasonable prices. Stay away. There isn't anyone in the store that has a clue what they are doing. I ordered thee pair of glasses and was told they would be ready in a week. Checked with the store after a week and was told they still were not in. I was told they would call when the glasses were ready. I received a phone message about my glasses being ready so I drove to Clarkson Eye care. I walked in and was greeted rudely by the manager. She said I had been harassing them all day and that I was told the glasses would not be in until the next day. ( I made one inquiry by phone). Wait a minute I got a voice mail at 4:30 PM that my glasses were ready. After hitting redial , it was Sam's Wholesale Club Optical that had called me. I dropped a pair of frames off the day before and had the lens replaced. They did a one day turn around on the glasses and charged me $69.00 instead of the $200.00 the Clarkson charge for the same lens's that I was still waiting to pickup. Over the next four days I made three trips to Clarkson Eye care to pick up one pair of glasses each time. They did not have any cases for my glasses and was told to try another Clarkson Eye care location for a case. I spent $700 dollars for thee pair of glasses that I could have got for less that half that cost at Sam's Wholesale Club. read more

Not happy at all... I set up an eye exam simply because I'm getting older and just wanted to see how my eyes were doing. I didn't have any issues with them at all. Shockingly I was told not only did I need glasses but I was told I needed bifocals. I tried wearing these glasses for over a month because I was told I needed to get used to them. After weeks of trying I could see better with them off than with them on. I visited clarkson and went through a test to see if the lenses were set up wrong. They measured my eyes and said they weren't right. So I waited a week for a new pair thinking ok now things will get better. Got the new ones... guess what? No change. When I wear the glasses everything up close gets blurrier and far away things like words are a bit more crisp but lights have several beams coming off of them with the glasses on. If I take the glasses off no beams... honestly I think the prescription is way off and from what I'm learning through other customers if you walk into clarkson with perfect vision you will still walk out with glasses. I'm hoping that's not the case. I have yet another appt with them next week... fingers crossed. read more

I had a visit one month ago to order glasses and contacts. I picked my glasses up within two weeks which was great. My main purpose for visiting however was for contacts because that is what I wear daily. Long story short, its now been just over a month and I called to check the status on my contacts order. What did I find? The order had never been placed. Someone "should" have called me a week after my initial appointment to finalize my contact order. Well someone didn't. Not able to do much beyond a simple reading glasses prescription. First pair they made me gave me headaches and I couldn't focus on anything closer than 5 feet away. They sent me to a specialist and he said the prescription was way off. The second pair they made me was almost as bad. So after 2 months of waiting for my new glasses I told them I wanted my money back if they were unable to do the job and they acted smugly happy about it. I went to bring my 7 year old son along with my 3 year old. They can be a handful most times. The staff was very patient, calm, and friendly with us. Outstanding, Went in to look at some new oakley frames that I found online. They had the same frames and were helpful with setting up an exam. These were a special order frame and they called me the day they came in. The prescription was off once I tried them on and they sent them back to have it corrected. I recently visited this location and I have mixed feelings. They had nice frames and most of the staff seemed friendly enough, nothing mind blowing but definitely adequate. However, there was one girl there, her name was Kayleigh, that I could've done without. I never write reviews or complain about stuff, but this girl was standing around in back talking obnoxiously loud to a younger gentleman about how drunk she got the day before. When I am shopping for glasses, I do not care to hear about your alcoholic tendencies, or the guy your getting drunk with, in between unnecessarily loud bursts of laughter. Who is the manager and why do they allow this?? I'm all for having fun at work but this was beyond that. It was tacky and annoying. Beyond that, I don't have any complaints. The frame selection was good, just a tad pricey, but I kind of expected that walking in. read more

DO NOT USE CLARKSON EYECARE! VERY RUDE EMPLOYEE'S!! I moved to southeast MO in May of 2012. I called Clarkson to set up appointments for my entire family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children, all due for eye exams). I scheduled an appointment for me and my husband for December 31, 2012 and everything was fine until billing called me at 5:50pm on December 28 to inform me that our insurance companies were denying the claims and that we were no eligible until April of 2013. I could not call the insurance companies at this point because they close at 5:00pm......I freak out because our appointments are Monday afternoon and it is after 5:00pm on Friday! Since I have a high glaucoma level (which they failed to ask me) then my Medicare Part B covers what they call "Eye Refractions" ANNUALLY because I am at high risk for Glaucoma. When I called back in, the employee would not listen to what I was trying to tell her and continuously stated that my "insurance only covered eye exams every two years" when I was trying to explain to her about my previous vision diagnosis.....I was rudely interrupted throughout my explanation! I then told her that I would call my insurance on Monday morning so they could tell me that she is "full of crap" and that I could call back and tell them how "stupid" they are. The lady yelled at me (very professional right?) and told me not to use "vulgar" language or she would hang up on me....ummmm, I didn't say one curse word throughout the entire call even though many curse words came to mind. I immediately spoke to the manager who did not seem to care that the employee had spoken to a potential customer in this manner even though she did say that she would make the supervisor aware of the incident (which I do not believe). I am taking my business elsewhere AND I will get my vision checked under the "Eye Refractions" clause due to my high risk of glaucoma. DO NOT USE CLARKSON, they care about the money and not about their clients. I will be calling both mine and my husband's insurance and filing a complaint with them and then I will get our eye exams done by someone else, NOT Clarkson Eyecare! read more
