They say that food can be a religious experience and Clarkston Union Bar & Kitchen takes that literally. Housed in a restored baptist church, the kitchen is where the altar used to be and there are some holy experiences taking place there. Let's start with Kracker Krust pizza. This is a thin crust pizza and the ingredients change biweekly. We had it topped with garlic oil, monterey jack, smoked chicken, buffalo sauce, blue cheese and scallions. Deliciously light and tasty. Then there was the turkey melt. All the day-after-Thanksgiving goodness you'd expect. Cranberry chutney, sourdough bread, caramelized onion. Savory flavors. Our waitress, Betty, has been working there since 1999. She has the friendliest smile. Becca, the head chef, visited with us to talk about the meal, the restaurant, and her love for Clarkston Union. The French toast was to die for! Went here for brunch with the family the food was amazing! It had nuts in it as well as the other toppings inside of it were delicious. Absolutely love the union owned restaurants and would definitely go back if I am wanting a nice breakfast. Service was super quick and staff were all super friendly. My only complaint is that the restaurant is a bit small so it is probably difficult to get a seat, so I would definitely recommend getting a reservation or getting there early. read more

A group of 10 of us met at Clarkston Union for dinner. For some reason, I thought that it was a barbecue restaurant (like its neighbor down the street), but it wasn't. They have salads, sandwiches, and apparently famous macaroni and cheese. (Someon at our table ordered it and let us try it. I thought it was good, and I liked the nutmeg seasoning. I'll have to remember that the nex time I make mac & cheese.) I was going to get a turkey sandwich, but then figured I could get that anywhere, so I had the pot pie. It seemed a little expensive at first (what isn't these days?) but I was very pleasantly surprised to see that it came with a good serving of vegetables -- broccoli, tomatoes and onions -- and a mound of mashed potatoes. The pot pie was good, but I'm always sad when they don't have a bottom crust. Someone in our group ordered the carrot cake and creme brulee to share for dessert. I'm not a creme brulee fan, but the carrot cake (in a cup!) may have been the best I've ever had! It wasn't too sweet, had a wonderful cream cheese frosting and pineapple on top. The only things that I didn't like was that the water was very noticeably well water, it was cold in the restaurant, and it was way too loud, so I couldn't even hear the people I was sitting next to and across from. We hav been back to The Union a number of times since I wrote this review and it is wonderful each time. The service is always good, the food is tasty and consistent. Last time, I tried something new-- the chicken pot pie. It was incredible and I am already ready to go back for more!! This was my first visit to the Clarkston Union and what a gem it is! We were greeted by Johnathon our server with a wonderful upbeat energy. He asked if we had any allergies and I said yes, to seed oils. Johnston checked with the fantastic chef Becca ( a gem) she came to our table and told me how she could prepare several dishes that might work. She prepared a Cobb salad to die for and then she came back later and told me she prepared a separate container with extra salad dressing she made for me to take home ( I had told her I'm terrible at making oil and vinegar dressing). i love this place and will spread the word! you Becca and Johnathon! read more

Went to celebrate A birthday and Cinco de Mayo. Not the place for this but Honcho's was booked. The appetizer corn chip and Salsa was ok. The salsa gets a 10. The broken to smithereens corn chips gets a Minus 2. Had our waitress paid a little closer attention and came right back , They We would of, I would of sent them back. They got eaten any way as the kids devoured them and we picked through to find a few that could hold salsa. Off to a bad start. Salsa is extra too for $3 but a lot of restaurants do that and theres was worth it. Sandwiches such as the Jalepeno pulled pork had maybe 3 large teaspoons of meat. Not much for $16.95 each. My Union Reuben of corn beef was (3) sliced lunch meat and tasted like it too $17.75 not worth the trouble. We order a pizza with cheese for one of the kids who would not eat it. Theres a hint. Kids chicken nuggets got devoured by the other child. We ordered 4 margaritas for $40 bucks and salt on the rim must be extra as we git none. No waitress again. There was good tequila in there though. The veggie portobello caprese I heard was very good! The roasted potatoes were bland. Period. The Potatoe salad was excellent. Service by Anna was a 3, We tip 20% regardless of service. Those waitresses have to put up with a lot. I know Mc Donalds is expensive but to lay out $200 for 4 adults and 2 kids makes the value of this place less appealing then a Happy meal. Too many better places along the block and the city I might add, than to go back here. read more

Huge selection of beers on tap to choose from! Openings at the bar while waiting on your table to become available. We were told 25 minute wait at 6 o'clock on a Friday which isn't bad. We waiting only about 15 minutes. Great selection of food to pick from. We had Mac & Cheese, the Panini Sandwich, and 2 cheeseburgers. Everything was very good. We haven't been here in quite a while and after this evening we wondered why? We shall return!! read more

I had been wanting to try this place and also Woodshop for a while now - we tried Honcho before the last Pine Knob concert, owned by the same people/company, which was also good. I snagged a reservation for Union Bar and Kitchen about a week before our BNL concert. The restaurant used to be a church, which is pretty cool - some of the seats are pews. We ended up getting sat at this huge booth (with pews) even though it was just myself and a friend. We both ordered a Bomb Pop, which was delicious - it had cherry vodka and a few other liquors in it - as well as the chips and salsa to split. The salsa was an interesting pinkish red color but not spicy. You get a huge portion of chips, so much so that we took the rest to-go. My friend is a gluten-free vegetarian and we had scoped out its gluten-free menu before arriving - you can do their famous mac & cheese GF, or the grilled cheese sandwich with brie. She got the sandwich and said it was very good. It also comes with a side salad, which was a big portion. I got the Cubano which was fantastic - it had ham, Swiss, and also pulled pork from the Woodshop. It also came with a huge portion of potatoes, which I wasn't expected, and unfortunately I hadn't brought an ice pack or anything with me so I wasn't able to bring most home. Overall the food here was very good, so I would come again, although I still want to try Woodshop. Waitservice was good too although I did have to wait for a water refill, albeit not that long. The atmosphere was also pretty cool, and I would recommend making a reservation - we got right in with one, otherwise especially on Pine Knob concert days, I think it can be a long wait. read more

Seems like we always make our way to Clarkston and the Union every trip to Detroit even though it's gotta be 30/40 minutes out of the city. We flew into Detroit for a family visit last week and went to The Union on our way to family house. The food is always lights out and that day was no different! Chicken noodle soup was outrageous. Of course we got the famous Mac n Cheese, two orders actually as one was for us and. The other to take along to the house and share. The surprise winner though was the homemade meatloaf! This is always the spot for good comfort food. Tried the Mediterranean rice bowl with chicken. It was perfectly delicious and lite for these hot summer days. The Mac and cheese is always fire. Not my best experience here. I've been to Clarkston Union several times but tonight just was not good. Our server was fast and pleasant but the food took a really long time and the restaurant was not that busy. I ordered the Tuna Bella rare and it came out well done. The lettuce was mostly the white part that you throw away. My girlfriend's dinner tasted like it sat too long under a heat lamp. The Mac n cheese was good. read more

This place is great - good service, fast drinks and food, fresh and hot. It was very crowded on a Sunday early evening before a concert - apparently, lots of us had the same idea. But service was great and the food was delicious. We had a variety of things - a Cuban sandwich, 2 different salads, and the lobster mac and cheese. My steak salad was absolutely perfect, and their homemade red wine vinaigrette is super tasty. Also, the mac and cheese is every bit as good as everyone says it is! That crunchy, cheesy topping is the stuff dreams are made of, and it's so creamy inside with perfectly cooked penne pasta. I love all of their restaurants, but downtown Clarkston is so cute and this experience was so good that I'd come back just to visit here again, and I'll always come before a concert! read more

Well, they claim to have amazing mac n cheese... as a guy who really isn't a mac n cheese fan..... is was bomb! Hot, cheesy, crunchy where needed.. Definitely need to have it if you go. We also had the chicken pot pie... very good. Hot as can be (one of my biggest complaints usually), big chunks of chicken, veggies.. puff pastry top... and a great beer selection. It wasn't our first time here but it's been awhile and maybe we were just too excited for take out but it appeared to be overhyped. The Union Mac is top notch, no question, but our other food was just okay, not worth ordering again. I also wish they would've put utensils in the to-go bag (but didn't notice until in my car) because before we were allowed to go inside anywhere my husband and I would just eat in our car for date night, since it was somewhere quiet and kids free. We'll be back, eventually, but are in no rush and would rather try out other establishments. read more

Always a good spot for some comfort food. Can not say enough about the MAC-N-CHEESE hands down the best in town.

This is one of the food good quality places in Clarkston. Recommend the meat loaf or pot pie (it's very creamy so I personally have to avoid it). Staff is good and they take reservations online which is great. Huge beer list and great cocktails. read more

Ambiance -5 very creative use of the pews and layout of the restaurant! Service - 5 friendly efficient kept the water filled and everyone happy Food - 5 our table had meatloaf, chicken pot pie, burger and Mac and cheese.
