This is a place where dreams go to die. That's a hell of a sentence to start a Yelp review with,…read moreespecially one with a semi-positive three stars. I can't speak to how well this place handles truck rentals, the thing U-Haul is most known for. Hell, the term U-Haul is a common synonym for rental truck. Nope, never rented a truck from here, but I did have a storage unit in this former Nabisco factory in Detroit's New Center for three long years. It's a beautiful, imposing building and a definite landmark but is there ever a depressing feeling inside. Not really their fault. It's my personal feelings about having to have a storage unit combined with the vibes I caught off other people. Nobody really wants to have a storage unit but sometimes they're necessary, even if it's for three trips around the sun and U-Haul performs a valuable service here. Fortunately, my rent at home was very reasonable, which kind of took some of the sting out of being forced to rent a storage unit since my space there was very limited. Eventually I managed to downsize from a 5 x 10 to a 5 x 5 but by that point prices here had inflated to the point I was paying nearly as much as I was when I originally leased the 5 x 10! The elevator broke down a couple times here during my three years. Once I was able to use a backup elevator and the other time I just needed to wait a whole day to be able to bring stuff down from my unit. My buddy Aaron also had a unit here before I did and he got inconvenienced worse than that. My pass card was also very finicky when it came to swiping at the after hours entrance. It would work fine inside and in the elevator though which made the problems at the after hours entrance even more frustrating. I once saw someone sleeping in their storage unit here with the door pulled 3/4 of the way down and their legs sticking out. Like I said, it's pretty depressing here. If you don't swipe out they won't let you access your unit the next time you try to get in, which I figure is a way of putting a stop to this sort of thing but desperate times, I guess.... I never had any problems with the employees here. After I downsized my unit my dumb ass forgot to take the old key off my keychain and I ended up breaking that key off in the new padlock. Well, it set me back $50 but maintenance buzzsawed that lock off in a prompt fashion and supplied me with a new one. It was a horrible time last year when my mom died and I made the decision to move in with my elderly father. The only good thing I can honestly say came from that was being able to finally put the U-Haul storage unit chapter of my life behind me. My belongings were kept safe and sound for three years but I don't ever want to set foot in this building again.
