We were at Claycomb Karate since August 2025. Sensei Joseph&Michael along with Sempai all are very professional and friendly while also also teaching karate, respect & discipline to our kids. We did feel like family here and the atmosphere of the waiting area was always very pleasant. You can always find friendly parents to talk to while waiting for the kids to finish class. Joseph is always friendly as well and loves to spark a conversation, which is perfect for those of us on the introverted side. Didn't even sign up, the point was made over and over to make sure that the new people can afford it. After a little of an hour of talking about himself, the dojo and how he is the only one teaching real karate , I want presented with a price, when I asked for a print out or price list I was told there was none. I politely said I would be in touch and left. I was told the dojo was like a "family" but I got a different vibe. Buyer be warned , there are friendlier places to take your kid, unless you enjoy hearing about how much a water dispenser cost. Look else where. read more

After many years of being here, my outlook on this dojo has only gotten better. Thank you Claycomb Academy of Martial Arts for continuing to provide me a safe and welcome space to train in. As a black belt my self with previous experience, it's hard to come by dojos that teach applicable and life-saving training, while remaining professional and helpful, though CKA has all of that! Especially as a female, this place has become my safe haven. I do not feel intimidated, like I would feel in a typical gym or mma studio. As a mom of a toddler and 8 month old getting out of the house or finding time to invest in learning something new is challenging. So I was immediately interested with the 8pm class that CKA offered. I was so impressed with his vibe and how he described this Dojo and its values that I ended up coming down the next day to sign up for one of the Dojo's specials! I've been training here at the Academy of Martial Arts for a few months now. Not only have I lost weight since I started (about 15lbs), but I am starting to feel myself getting stronger. The time spent in each class gives me a tremendous workout while learning self defense techniques that are based on traditional Shotokan, but with a more modern approach to real life practical application and defense. On Saturdays traditional Kata classes are taught. The Dojo is very clean, colorful, and attractive. It is well stocked with equipment such as heavy bags, pads, and gear. There is an assortment of weapons that students may choose to be trained in, and the entire workout area is covered with a padded flooring. It is very inviting and you immediately feel that you are in a dojo. I have found all the students from the youngest to oldest to be very respectful, curious, and friendly. And the Instructors Shihan Claycomb and Sensei Dionne to be wonderful instructors with their vast knowledge of Shotokan Karate, Judo, Kick Boxing, Wrestling, Grappling, and Sparring. This dojo is amazing. My father and I visited many dojos before and this one has to be the best. Young or old you will be welcomed and treated like family the second you step in. Everyone is treated like family. The style is shotokan (from okinawa) but the style is adjusted so that one can use karate in the real world. One learns easily with focus and determination. Women i highly recommend you go here because it is a great skill to learn and here we learn many ways to defend ourselves. The children's classes have a good variety of skills for my kids to learn. So far my kids have learned traditional karate, practical or reality-based karate, self defense, and bag/mitt strikes. Their emotional confidence has increased as well as their physical coordination. I will just go on record to say that today was handled completely un-professional. My daughter was to start her first free class that had been advertised on Facebook. They had us choose a date and time and sent confirmations directly to my cell. I even got a text literally one hour before start time to confirm we were coming. We arrived 15 minutes before time only for them to say that they don't have a slot for us, not honoring their promotion and even when I inquired about when open enrollment might be or when they would have a slot, only to be told that they weren't accepting applications. My daughter was so excited for today and extremely let down! Thank goodness for Evolution Karate who picked up the broken pieces and allowed my daughter to have a one on one training today. Someone should've had the courtesy of explaining something to me face to face instead of someone running back and forth reading me text messages. Again extremely un-professional read more
