Back in 1938 I was taken in at the hospital as I had contracted Scarlet Fever and I was in isolation as a result. I recall some instances and particularly the nursing staff.
I was a 4-year old and the nurses used to physically carry me off for my bath as required.
During the 4-weeks that I was in Clayponds my favourite occupation was with a scrubbing brush I had found which I took outside and under the ward-building to scrub the pipes underneath.
My parents visited regularly and brought me different small toy cars to match the particular one I wanted. Unfortunately they never managed to find the one I really wanted.
I survived the war years and am a relatively fit 80-year old living in Auckland, New Zealand, some 12,000 miles from my pre-war home in Hanwell.
