The fact that there was no elevator made lugging everything up really annoying and reminiscent of a certain Best Western in Wichita Falls with a broken elevator (see my one-star review on that on my profile). I was going to swim, but there was no water in the pool. In fact, the pool was quite an eyesore, as it was filled with tons of gunk. The buffet in the morning was mediocre at best. I would say that this Best Western was below average (average being your typical Best Western), but definitely wasn't a terrible experience. I just feel that it could have been better in more ways than one. However, if I ever stop in Clayton again, I wouldn't mind staying here at all. I would recommend, especially considering the state of other Clayton hotels.

Our stay at Hotel Eklund was unfortunately met with conflict at check-in. We were charged an…read moreunspecified late check-in fee despite Agoda listing not detailing such a fee. The receptionist referred us to the direct booking site for details, but we booked directly through Agoda, not elsewhere and was not going to review all possible listing sites for their fees on a tired night. The receptionist also looked tired, as if she just crawled out of bed, and didn't even know how to turn on their front desk computer for check-in (she had to call for help), which caused check-in process to take around 20 minutes. The room itself was cozy, vintage rustic, and clean, which was nice. The bath tissue was Scott thin single-ply and shampoo, conditioner, body wash was a generic 3-in-1 so they cheaped out on toiletries. The AC blower unit vent directly hit one of the 2 full beds and made it very cold. There should be a AC deflector to prevent direct blowing to bed. Breakfast in morning was a bit disappointing. Small selection of continental items, with a few ordering of hot items. We arrived around 7:45 am, but there was no more orange juice. I requested more for kids, but server said they're out and had a single 46 oz bottle for breakfast for all guests (another stinginess example)! Server also for forgot my son's breakfast burrito order when we ordered and he later didn't even want it after being disappointed by the breakfast. At least the quiches slices were pretty good. After breakfast, we attempted to discuss late check-in fee issue with owners, but no one was at front desk even after ringing service bell multiple times. After departing, we called back to request waiving late fee with owners Janet and Keith, but they were dismissive after 2 separate calls. They requested our Agoda confirmation information, which was forwarded via email, but they didn't respond afterward. For a local small business, they were very petty and adamant on charging this late fee. I was hoping to be treated with more respect and decency from small business owners, unlike other large corporate owned hotels, but this will be the first and last time we stay at Hotel Eklund.

Parking on the side of the building made access to the entrance just a few steps away. Our check in was quick and easy by a friendly member of the staff. We were assigned to Room #202. The elevator made our getting there painless, with the opportunity for using the stairs to get back down. The room, while small, was like a step back in time, cowboy themed and clean. We settled in and proceeded to the dining room for dinner. After perusing the menu we opted for the Sirloin Steak dinner with baked potato and choice of vegetable of the day and side salad. We also ordered a drink from the bar, the local Alien Amber Pint for me and the Mondavi Chardonnay for my wife. I enjoyed my beer but sorry to say that the wine was terrible, though my wife would not let this be known there. Dinner arrived and was plated beautifully, unfortunately the steaks were very tough, grisly and even hard to cut. The flavor was good and they had been cooked a perfect medium rare but the star of this dinner was a terrible disappointment. Again, my wife did not want to say anything. We finished dinner with a Gin and Tonic, enjoying the company of the other folks dining here for just a bit, some local and others passing through as were we, then headed back up to our room, finishing our drink there, to call it a day. The bed was very comfortable and the crisp sheets made our great night sleep even better. Three trains passed through the city overnight and I heard all three of them, loving the whistles and the sounds that only a train can make. We headed to breakfast in the morning with high expectations based on reviews that we had read about 'made to order' omelets and tasty baked goods, but for us the whole experience was just a bit strange and hard to explain. A sign at the entrance of the dining area described the choices from the kitchen. We proceeded in and took a seat. A lady from the kitchen asked if we would like coffee and that was a "yes". She brought the coffee then as she began her return to the kitchen I had to approach her asking about the procedure for getting breakfast. We requested the Quiche. The 'Crustless Quiche' was really nothing more than an omelette cut in the shape of a piece of pie. It was served to us, by a lady who worked in the kitchen, on a cold plate, and the 'quiche' itself was dry and cool as well. The only other breakfast items available, on a side table set up in the restaurant, were a small amount of oatmeal in a crock pot, which was still hot, with cinnamon and brown sugar on the side. And, there were cold biscuits with butter and jelly , and a small piece of cinnamon coffee cake that we split. There was also some kind of juice. I try not to be too harsh in my 'Yelps' but for me this breakfast experience was a terrible end to our stay in this historic hotel. Would we stay here again if our travels took us this way again? I am not sure. We loved the old hotel. The people were friendly but our dining experiences were disappointing. Still, I gave this a four because we enjoyed everything at this hotel other than our dining experiences.

Yes, it's maybe a little tired and the beds have been well slept in, but they weren't horrible. The shower pressure provided my main complaint, only cause I have thick hair and it takes forever to rinse it out with a trickle. There is a train track behind the hotel that woke me up at 3:30am. Not the hotels fault, just a warning. We peeked at the free breakfast, but decided to head down the street for a coffeehouse. Overall, really not a bad place to crash.

I had a hard time getting under the covers but I figure the sheets were probably the cleanest thing on the bed. Most of the lamps were missing light bulbs and the TV didn't work. I wouldn't want to stay here again. It's crazy how much we paid and we got it on Priceline. Not a good deal, no matter the price. I understand that some hotels don't have all the amenities that others might offer, but there's no reason they can't be as clean.

You sink in the middle. There's not a full set of sheets on the bed. Usually you have your first sheet that goes on and hugs the matress and the one that goes on top you get under. Not here they only put the second sheet on. And it just sits on top of the matress cover. I found someone else's hair in my bed!! And there was hair in the bathroom on the floor and door. Eww. For the price you pay it's not worth it. It looks and feels like someone came in made things look ok but didn't clean at all. And this room was supposed to be non smoking and it reeks. The apartments were well laid out and clean, the beds were super comfortable and kitchens had all the comforts of home. It was fun walking around the property seeing the teepees and the yurt. We will definitely stay there again!
