From their involvement in JazzAlive, the Rooftop Concert Series to their awesome jazz radio show that runs from morning, noon and night they communicate why jazz is still a vibrant and relevant artform. Whenever I listen to their Morning Session to the Jazz in the Afternoon I picture dudes with milk crates of vinyl cramming them into a small Volvo Station Wagon and heading toward the radio station. The wealth of the knowledge of all dj's, who do all the shows is infinitesimal. The gamut runs from traditional, big band, zydeco, dixieland, avant-garde, acid jazz and all points between. Which includes standards by Coltrane, Parker, Porter, Thelonius Monk, Getz, Jobim etc. But for me the enjoyment comes from when they reach into the deep cuts, whenever they play music from artists that I've never heard of before. I typically keep a notepad next to me so I can jot down the names of a cool song or an artist. Above all what I appreciate is hearing the dj's provide a historical context for some songs or artists. Which provides me an invaluable insight into the mindset or an individual's vision. KRTU 91.7 FM is passionate about jazz, therefore it is successful in sharing that passion with the rest of the city. If you're tired of the other radio stations that play the same song a million times in one hour, this station is a refreshing escape from that. More importantly if you love hearing jazz in a live setting check out the various events they post, sponsor and support. John Coltrane composed " A Love Supreme ", to convey his love for jazz as an art form. KRTU seems to be an aural representation of that.

Since it's a college station, they don't have to play nearly as many ads as the other stations do, and they have much greater control of the kinds of tunes that they play. They play a variety of jazz throughout the day. Nothing ever too crazy. In fact, this is the only station we all can agree on at work. They don't play the same ol' stuff day in and day out. If you tune in on the weekends or late night, they often deviate from the jazz, and play some of the students' favorite songs. It's a great station to find out what kinds of jazz-related events are going on around town. Turn in, turn on!

Follow that with the Best of the Beatles, a Beatles themed show that's been on the air for 25+ years. Next, the Hillbilly Hayride, where Hank Harrison spins the country and western hits of yesteryear. Next, the Blues Hour, which always makes me depressed. KSYM is incredible. They're always giving away tickets and albums. You can actually win these call in contests, because not as many people have discovered KSYM as opposed to one of those Clear Channel stations. It's great that they let the students pick the music. You can get some weird songs, but at least they're always fresh, and hip. I love you KSYM!

It's supposed to be Classic Rock, but I get offended over what they consider "Classic." They say that they'll play anything, but when I call up and request some polka, they just laugh. Sigh. With all the commercials that they play on here, I feel like I hear more yammering than music. Additionally, it seems that the commercials are louder than the music. I tuned them out.

When Momma was in Assisted Living it was an absolute delight to have church youth groups sing Christmas Carols to everyone in her home! It just wouldn't be Christmas without Chrismtas songs. Sure, there are some lousy Christmas songs like "All I want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth" and another non favorite is "The Twelve Days of Christmas." "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" makes me cringe, as does "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause." These songs likely resonate with some. "Silent Night" is a favorite as is "Oh, Holy Night!" This is quite a unique radio network. This network is comprised of a series of broadcasts and…read morechannels/frequencies throughout south Texas. As you pass through the Eagle Ford Shale area, you can tune from affiliate to affiliate, all on the left hand side of the dial. However, that's the only left leaning thing about this conservative station. This station has a hard swerve to the right- still talking about Hillary's emails and Bengazi in 2020. They had a bit from Alex Jones, the conspiracy theorists who has been banned from Youtube for being too inflammatory. However, their country music selection is right on! They play all the greatest country hits from the 50's through about up to the 70's, so lots of high and lonesome songs. It's a perfect station if you're a conservative oil driver on the back roads of Texas. If you're having to explain why Alex Jones thinks Newtown was a hoax, it's less than perfect. My #1 complaint with this station is that it's not available on my smart speaker so I can't listen at home.

Interesting discussions of local, state-wide and national news including some chat about the Starbucks in San Antonio voting to unionize (good luck!) and some local politicians taking both sides of the redistricting maps. Listening to this station, is the soundtrack to keeping Austin Weird. Since it's all local volunteers, the music selections are as diverse as the music tastes in the Live Music Capitol of the World! Seriously, if you don't like the music here, just wait a little bit. Just like the weather in Texas! The DJs change out every few hours, and each one brings their own selection of weird music. You're not going to hear Top 40 on here. I like the fact that there's no real advertisements on this station. They're all public service announcements, and local issues that they talk about. The coolest thing about this station is that if you wanna get on the radio badly enough, they'll put you on the air, and provide the training on how to do it! KOOP's mission is "to engage, connect and enrich the whole community, including the underserved, through creating diverse, quality, educational music and news programming." They fulfill their mission!

I suppose up until that point, I just misunderstood the station. Especially the switch over to the UT station which seems to have a constant stream of kids talking about Star Wars.
