This hike however will reward you with beautiful views and a workout and if you make it to the top you will feel beyond proud of yourself. A quick climb up the ladder to the fire lookout will take you back into history with old letters and photos of what this land once was! It was too hot to read through everything when I came up so I will have to make more trips. The road going up is filled with holes, large holes that your whole car will dip into. I took it slow at first until another car passed me and I found the right technique for my subi. Yea a subi can definitely make the trek but just be gentle on your cars and enjoy the journey! The hike up is all stairclimbers. It's definitely not a walking trail for a casual stroll; it's strenuous but very fun. I felt I was in great cardio shape while hiking but my hips and knees definitely made it harder. Stairs made of stones, stairs made of wood, and the last bit leading to the lookout is all hopping over rocks and even pulling yourself up. Bring your hiking poles and it'll definitely help! $5 for parking without a Discovery pass.

Not sure they'd let you use theirs anyway. There is no parking lot. The YMCA lot doesn't allow for park parking. You have to park on the street. There is usually close parking available. There is no shade. It gets really hot during the summer. All in all, I like the park for its age range. I wish there was a bathroom. We've had to leave early a bunch of times because we need a bathroom.

There is a bridge to cross the river so you no longer have to ford the river and get wet. I didn't encounter any flying bugs, although I brought bug repellent just in case. There was only one large arch, and you could see water dripping down from the roof. Even though there are many signs warning about the danger of getting close to the ice caves, many people were entering below the arched icy snow. People have died here because it only takes half a second for a piece of ice to fall, or fall and slide along an icy path to careen on top of people before they have a chance to react. A few days ago, a large piece of ice did fall, and luckily no one was hurt. There are huckleberries along the path, and gorgeous foxglove flowers. I can't wait to hike this during the winter months when there's more snow. Maybe the toilets will be less smelly as a bonus!

The trail is very well marked which is always a good thing if you have not been on this hike. The elevation is not bad but there is some up and down throughout the hike. This is a hike that is suitable to young kids since the paths are with some single track, some wide paths and not any dangerous obstacles. There are a couple muddy areas and I think the Winter and early Spring would make this hike rather mucky and a bit more challenging. The rewards along the way are precious with beautiful views of the river, mountains and moss filled trees and not to mention the lime kiln towards the end of the hike. If you are looking for a fun hike that is moderately challenging this is a great Summer/Fall and probably Winter/Spring a little more wet and muddy.

There's multiple grassy fields and some picnic tables. Some people were flying kites when we were there because of the wind. There's also a dog bag station, which is nice to see at a state park. Regarding the fort, I didn't realize until later that there's an easy path up to the top without needing stairs and/or a steep route. Otherwise, I thought it was tricky going up if I could only use the thin metal ladders. Once at the top, there were multiple points that seemed iffy and unprotected from dropping down.

After 3 miles, trail goes down pretty steeply, lake was really pretty, not very cold water! Sat there for a bit to enjoy the water and view, really calming. Didn't see very many people on the trail, had the lake to ourselves. Bad part of the hike is the need to go back uphill after the lake, but it's not too bad. Took 2 hours to get to the lake, 2 hours back, was a bit dark and got a bit cold towards the end of the hike. Hiking poles definitely helped!

We went around 8:00am got at lake around 11:30am, only few small breaks and took 3 hours to come back. When we reached the lake it was mesmerizing. Thinks to remember: 1.Take a lot of water and snacks with you. It is hard hike so stay hydrated. 2. Bug spray if needed we had it but did not use it because bugs were not too bad. 3. Go early to beat the heat and this hike requires $5 day use fee and Northwest forest pass. 4. Since it's not 7.5 miles be ready to do extra 4 miles. Total of 11.5miles This hike was hardest hike for us so far but the view worth the hike. I would highly recommend to go there at lest once in life time. The view is breathtaking!!!
