Gina and Tom do know how to train dogs and they are delightful people. I'm not sure they know how to train people (at least not me). My initial impression was very good, but after spending several hundred dollars I'm very disappointed. My dog would behave very well for Gina or Tom... but when I left the shop I did not feel that I had been given the guidance on how to repeat what they did. The training sessions were very "scattered" - there did not seem to be a plan on who was doing the training, or what they were training. Probably if you are an assertive individual you could get good results from a relationship with Clearwater - but you need to know what you need, and I did not. read more

If you have a specific issue you need to work on with your dog, I suggest you go elsewhere. The training method here is seemingly set in stone, spending lots of time on the basics (sit, stay etc.) supposedly to "build a relationship with your dog." While I understand that, not addressing the issue that needs immediate attention is actually detrimental to the owner/dog relationship. My newly rescued dog had some serious behavior problems that I needed help with. I decided to find someone who would work with me on a more individual basis to correct that behavior. When I asked for a refund on my remaining sessions, they did not even have the courtesy to respond. Very disappointing in terms of time and money spent. read more

I've been attending group on and off for the past year usually outside which is great for distractions but sometimes cold/hot based on weather. I did a series of privates with Tom and Gina. I mainly worked with Tom which was too much fun and we'd go overtime often just chatting too much. I have a herding mutt rescue, Hank, who is severely dog reactive. He goes past threshold lighting fast, biting the leash, grass, and even would redirect on me in a panic. Unfortunately, he just is a high management kind of dog so I have to be very diligent with him and we use a muzzle when around dogs in class. Besides class being fun I really appreciated the one-on-one tailored classes. I did training at Noble Beast (prickly pooch) before which they were friendly but the teachings were useless. Tom told me often to be more militant with my dog and to hold him to a higher standard. As he would say my dog "could get straight C's, without even trying." He's right, my dog is highly intelligent and learns a new trick in 5 minutes. I've taught my dog several advance party tricks like jumping over my arms and on my back but all those tricks are rather useless when he's being reactive. Gina actually told me that my dog was a jack of all trades but a master of none which was offensive to me BUT she was right! It was a hard pill to swallow because I think my dog's great but all those fun tricks are useless. Ego aside, I spent months just focusing on the basics and making each command more solid. Come, heel, sit, down, let's go, all done, and go to bed which was great last Halloween :). I really like that there is an option to come back to group classes. My dog was perfect at Noble Beast because they visually blocked the dogs during class with curtains and my dog needed more challenge and to be pushed. That's not realistic, I can't walk my dog with curtains covering all the dogs around us. They also told me to practice more avoidance and basically change directions when we see dogs and never let my dog go above threshold. If a dog surprises us at a fence, my dog is past threshold in half a second. It was the worst advice and we could not tackle the problem head on. At Clear Water Dog Training I can safely work with my dog in uncomfortable settings which is being around many dogs. He would treat every group class like fight club and was ready to lunge at any and all dogs especially the Shepards, which they are never in short supply of. We just work the basics in group so it's not hard unless you have an unruly or difficult dog. There are many long time clients who come to group with wonderful dogs, who are usually very calm and well behaved. I don't know why they even keep coming other than the social time haha but it's actually great if you have a reactive or insecure dog like mine to experience being around calm well mannered dogs. It's also good for other owners/new clients to be around calm secure owners, which is what you get with the long term clients who are just shooting the breeze. I'm always so focused on controlling my reactive dog it's actually nice to hear the silly conversations going on, takes your mind off the stress of managing a difficult dog. Some days are better than others at class. But his outbursts have significantly decreased and has for several classes let other dogs smell his butt while I supported and held him. Today he sniffed dog Katie which I was so excited for. If you go to Saturday group you'll be lucky to meet Katie and her owner. The best dog to befriend if you have a socially awkward insecure dog. That was a little goal I made a while back because Hank would try to lunge at Katie, as with all the dogs. Now he's learning not all dogs are bad and has commands to focus on, instead of biting. I personally would describe Clear Water Dog Training as balance training. They will use leash corrections but are very fair to the dogs. I never once felt a dog was being mistreated or over corrected. They offer clear corrections and guide the dogs and they usually always look excellent when Tom or Gina have them. Us owners need the work though.. They are very thoughtful of a dog's mind/body not just commands and do a lot of natural remedies, essential oils, massages to help soothe and calm your dog. I joke hippie dog lovers will love it here! They have a great balance between the calming remedies as well as holding your dog accountable for their actions. It's like yoga and military birthed dog training haha. I will continue to attend as many group classes as my schedule allows. I'm very grateful for Gina and Tom for putting together a great program and especially the ongoing group classes which we desperately needed. Dog ownership takes training, management and effort from the owners and if you're willing to do the work and listen to your trainer your dog will be much happier. I know my boy is. read more

Gina and Clearwater Dog training saved my dog's life this time last year. I have a rescue dog (Bella) that after four years in our home started attacking my very helpless old arthritic dog who can not defend herself. I took Bella to the vet and put her on Xanax which made the attacks much much worse. Our vet advised me to either re-home her (as if someone wants to adopt a dog that attacks other dogs) or put her down. We called professional trainers but could not get an initial appointment for two months and some trainers told us to euthanize her. Other professional trainers turned us down and were not able to recommend another trainer. I called Gina (a very professional trainer) and left a message and was trying to gather the courage to call my vet and make an appt to euthanize her. Then Gina returned my call and instantly gave me a list of things to either stop doing or start doing. We started obedience classes at Clearwater and everything pretty much instantly became much much better. We do use some physical separation such as crates and x-pens just to ensure everyone is safe. Over the last year we found out our old arthritic dog played a role in these attacks. FYI - there was a similar case of a dog in Larimer county this year that was adopted, then two years later started attacking the other dogs in the house. Her owners took her to a shelter and she was euthanized. It is unfortunate someone like Gina was not there to take on this dog's training. I am very grateful for the help Gina and Clearwater provided to my dog Bella that saved her life. Bella is also much happier with the training and the structure the training provided. I have to say I was a bit skeptical about Clearwater at first after reading some reviews. However, when they offered a Groupon for 8 private 30-minute session for $200 (saved us $150), we had to jump on it. We just completed our fourth session at Clearwater and are very happy with our choice. We adopted a dog from Dumb Friends several months ago. He is a great dog, but has severe separation anxiety and to make it worse, can escape just about any kennel. He is very shy towards strangers and has destroyed numerous things around the apartment, so we finally had to do something and obedience training kept coming up. Tom facilitated our first two sessions (each went over the half hour); he heard our concerns with the dog/situation before recommending anything. Right off the bat, Tom told us it would not be easy and would most likely be an ongoing battle. I appreciated the no bull approach and have to say he pumped me up a little too. He reminded us that we were nice enough to give Kenny a home, so it was time for Kenny to start giving back. He gave us numerous suggestions/exercises to do with Kenny to help relieve his anxiety; some have been more helpful than others, but melatonin has been a savior! The third and fourth session have been led by Gina and have both exceeded the half hour we paid for. Gina genuinely seems like she wants to help create a better dog/situation, but she is tough! She had to call us out a little bit in the third session about homework. She explained that it would not work and really would just be a waste of time for us to let him do whatever and then bring him to her to fix. Ultimately, we are the ones needing Kenny to be independent, so we would only benefit if we are committed to spending time training him. After that we did try to dedicate time each day to homework with Kenny and it truly has strengthened our bond with him. Gina really broke through with Kenny in the fourth session by trying a hide-n-seek game, pushing his buttons and then acu-prssure to calm him down. His stressful reaction to her got less and less and by the end he was sitting there loving it as she loved on him. She noticed during the hide-n-seek game his reaction to us leaving and suggested giving him less attention plus an exercise to help him be more independent. This is something I am mostly guilty of, not my boyfriend, so this will be my biggest challenge in the upcoming week. It makes sense though and I need Kenny to be independent, so I can leave without worrying what is going on at home.... Kenny has since graduated from obedience school and is doing great! He always be better and we are considering taking him back for group classes periodically, but our main issue was the tearing up the apartment. In the first few months we had Kenny he destroyed, two rugs, a lamp, a vase, some dishes, blinds, a pillow and I could probably go on...towards the end of his 8 week program, we stopped kenneling him because he was still escaping and the dog going before us had chipped a lot of her teeth that way. This made me nervous, but I certainly didn't want him chipping teeth. Once we started leaving him out of the kennel when gone, it went great! We have even eliminated the melatonin from the equation and he is completely fine being alone; no more destruction! It's crazy! I don't know if the kennel made him feel to confined or something, but I know we owe most of his progress to Tom and Gina. I think he finally came to really trust us and the obedience training helped that bond occur. read more
