On our visit to Halifax I was looking forward to seeing if the sushis here would be taking advantage of the fresh crab meat and finally grant me with the Sushi epiphany I have been looking for for the past four years. This place came in highly recommended by two of our local friends and five stars Yelp so I decided to give it a shot. The place is well located in front of a lake in what seems to be a very nice neighbourhood. The staff greeted us in a friendly manner and kids felt welcomed. The place was clean too. We had some veggies tempuras, California rooks, circus rolls and I can't remember the last one. I must say I was a little bit disappointed with the sushi taste, the presented nicely, yes that is true but the taste was fairly neutral. The rice was well cooked and stuck to the chopsticks adequately but I would have expected a little more flavour out of the rolls themselves. The one we choose had a lot of batter spread on top, a little too much to my taste but it's ok as we could put it on the side but I would still expect a bit more flavour out of it. For instance a California roll in Vancouver was shredded crabsticks mixed in some sort of mayo (mayo might not be the term) and on the east coast most sushis have the crab stick just cut, not shredded no sauce with it. I thought that with all the fresh crab meat available here I could expect something a little more original. Even the other rolls with crab in them (not the California roll) did not bring out the crab flavour. As a result it is not a bad sushi restaurant at all but I would have expected for more from such a highly recommended and five stars rated restaurant.

The ingredients and bread were all fine - but that's it, just fine. Definitely not worth the price - it would have been $3-$4 cheaper to get a hamburger than it was a plain turkey sandwich. It was a hit and a miss - we'll keep going back for a sweet treat but in the nicest way possible you can get a much better and cheaper lunch elsewhere.

The noodles were supple and tender, and not at all mushy from sitting around in a warming tray all day like some spots. Conveniently, they also have a bunch of frozen soups to take home and keep for a rainy (re. too-lazy-to-cook) day. My wife and have tried several, including chicken and tomato bisque, potato and corn chowder, donair (!) and cream of mushroom, and the flavours are always fantastic! My youngest daughter had the corn chowder and the BLT, and enjoyed it very much. My other had the Beef and Barley and devoured every spoonful. I sampled all the soups and found filling and so tasty. When you walk into the store, the first thing you notice is all the British imported food and snack items.. Reminds me a lot of my childhood and I usually buy something for nostalgia sake. Right beyond that is beverage display case with all sorts of drinks you'd rarely see elsewhere. I especially enjoy their local and import ginger beer selection, as well as Ribena. Beyond that the store is a mixture of exotic cheeses, excellent produce, a deli, health food aisles and the British butchery. This butchery is especially known for its Nova Scotia lamb, which is the best I've bought anywhere around here. The beef steaks are a close second. Needless to say, due to the nature of the products sold here, the prices are exorbitant.. I keep Pete's as a treat to go buy a few luxury food items if I haven't entirely blown my food budget for the month. If my budget hasn't been blown yet, it's sure to be so once I'm done at the Frootique. While many of the items are quite unique, there are many food items that are..items which can be purchased at your regular grocery store for half the price (ie. many of the dairy products). I also think the space the store occupies is much too small... you constantly feel like you're in a traffic jam trying to navigate the narrowly jam packed aisles, and always a hair breadth away from knocking things over.. the store is so cramped, I picture knocking something over as having a domino effect.. dropped a bag of chips?...there goes the whole aisle. The check out staff are fast, friendly and on the ball with keeping registers open. I don't necessarily see this as good customer service, though... since the store is so cramped, if long lines were to form then customers in line to pay would take up half the retail space (I've seen this happen here more than once).
