We love stopping at White Sail to grab a loaf of bread and one of their delicious squares. Today we decided to grab lunch and enjoy it on one of the picnic tables outside. It was quite expensive for what it was. For two turkey sandwiches (with no side), a loaf of bread and two squares it was almost $50! The sandwiches were mediocre. The ingredients and bread were all fine - but that's it, just fine. Definitely not worth the price - it would have been $3-$4 cheaper to get a hamburger than it was a plain turkey sandwich. It was a hit and a miss - we'll keep going back for a sweet treat but in the nicest way possible you can get a much better and cheaper lunch elsewhere. read more

This is a tiny spot but OMG, it's a stop you have to make! Such a family feel and the food is AMAZING. Lovely seating area outside by the water. The poutine! It's fabulous. Delicious! Our resident vegetarian even made an exception and tried some. Even something as unassuming as a grilled cheese sandwich? The BEST grilled cheese I've ever had. Delicious cheddar, perfectly grilled to the crispiest, crunchiest, tastiest, yum level ever. I'd tell you about my son's burger but he inhaled it so fast I couldn't get an accurate description other than it was "10/10, would eat again." And they had ice cream! Though we were full. Sadly, the days of Jacques and Caroline, the owners at the time responsible for giving White Sails the great reputation are long gone. We are now on at least the second set of owners since then. The latest iteration has licensed the place and is offering upscale coffee; all well and good, but that's not what put the place in Where to Eat in Canada nor will it return it. The poutine is one of the better ones in the area, a bit expensive but the good curds cost more, and the sugar pie is still worthy. The rest? It's okay and that's about it. Probably the best poutine in HRM if not Nova Scotia. As a Quebec transplant it was great to find this place. The smoke meat is proper and traditional as well. It's not the pre sliced packaged stuff. They slice the brisket right in front of you. A gem of a place with a great view while you're snacking. Very grateful to the entire staff. There were 14 of us (including kids) arrived 20 minutes before they closed for the day. They warmly received us and patiently waited on us while we were busily scanning through the menu. Husband and I ordered a Reuben burger (with fried onion), and a regular poutine. The poutine with real cheese curd topped with thick/ salty gravy is a strong contender to Willy's in Halifax. The Rueben burger was gigantic and delicious (the fried onion is a must). The patty was made of Angus beef and buried under a pile of real Montreal smoked meat! We were able to share them (reluctantly) with our 2.5 yr old son :) Our other guests also enjoyed their meals tremendously: soup + homemade bread, smoked meat poutine..etc. The thing is I was too busy enjoying my food to notice what others were eating! read more

Made a visit to our favorite spot today...so disappointed. When our order arrived I munched down into my sandwich, gagged on the bite, spit it into my napkin. It was a mouthful of cold fat. Checked the sandwich out for a piece of meat. The meat was so tough I could not swallow it even after chewing on it for some time. I spit this into my napkin. This was not Montreal smoked meat, it was more like a brisket, a bad one. Three young people were working so we threw the mess into the garbage. Went to White Sails today and the new owners greeted us enthusiastically. We ordered a burger, poutine and some baked goods. The burger patty was delicious, clearly homemade, so tasty! We had to get take away (of course these days!) and it was so refreshing that almost every part of the packaging was compostable! I really appreciate this part! The staff were so friendly and it was a perfect road trip on a rainy Saturday. There are plenty of water view places along the Peggys Cove Road to park and eat. Will be back for sure! read more

Found this little place while out for a drive with my parents and decided to pop in just to see. It was busy and people were enjoying the sun at the picnic tables near the water. Because I am a sugar addict I went straight to the desert selection. I had never heard of sugar pie except as a term of endearment so I thought I'd give it a go. Ok from here on in, I will never call someone sugar pie unless I'm totally in love with them because that pie is love. Trust me, I eat sugar in all shapes and sizes and colors but I can not look at sugar the same way ever again. I yelled at that tiny bowl of white sugar in my cupboard for not living up to its potential. Why can't you be more like the pie?!! The unpasteurized honey tried to argue with me that at least it wasn't processed but I retaliated with "how long can you hold a triangle shape without help"? It knows, it knows. Oh and I also made friends with a happy little cricket(are crickets black and shiny?) outside by the big rock. The pie made me that happy! Montreal Smoked meat that melts in your mouth. Check! Poutine with light, delicious gravy, cheese curds that squeak. Check! Now try the Newfie Poutine with stuffing made from the smoked meat drippings and I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I can't claim to be an expert on Montreal cuisine, but this is a delightful little place, with great staff and decadent, delicious food. Jacques treated us to a taste of the brisket when we stopped in for cookies and coffee (also lovely!) and we knew we had to come back for dinner, which we did several hours later after touring around Peggy's Cove. We ate outside on brightly painted chairs, matching the fun exterior of the building, which overlooks a pretty lake. Can't wait to come back during my next visit with my parents. This wonderful bakery is closed for reno's till next Tuesday. Since it closed about 6-7 weeks ago, I have really missed both the product and the delightful owners. Jacques and Carolyn have done wonders with this business since they purchased it. I'm not sure the exact date things changed hands but I had heard about it and decided to visit with my husband. These two very imaginitive and creative folks do miracles. Things I had never heard of like bredzels, you have to try them they're awesome, to their authentic home made butter cream eclairs are just two of my favourites. The great thing is, they're not too big, just enough to satisfy that sweet tooth. They use free run eggs from a local business and quality ingredients. I could go on and on about their specialties, so I have to add one more, sweet potato bread. Make French Toast with it, and you'll never want to use another bread to make your recipe again. Jacques potato scallion bread is another great add on for company, or just for your family. Again not oversized. The prices are very reasonable, and usually they will start feeding you with bite sized samples of their incredible bakery wares when you walk in the door. Service is awesome and I'm pleased to say everything I've ever had at this shop is and has been wonderful. They reopen on Tuesday and I will be there for sure. If you're headed to Peggy's Cove for a drive, it's a worthwhile stop, and in their renos they will have seating, coffee service from Java Coffee, lite lunches and as they told me this morning so much more in new product. This place is hard to miss, that's for sure! Not just because of the vibrant stripes, but also because the parking lot is almost always packed with cars and motorcycles. They certainly picked a great spot for the place - directly on a main thoroughfare to one of the most iconic and visited landmarks in Nova Scotia (the Peggy's Cove lighthouse). Constant traffic = lots o' business. And that view?! Beautiful. Another smart thing they did was install a speaker outside, so that you can hear your order called even though you are sitting outside staring over the water! Because, I mean, where else would you be sitting, really? Such a simple thing, but not something you see often. More biz's need to install these! I was surprised to see that they offer more than just sandwiches and baked goods - you can get a great hot lunch here, including a delicious burger and poutine. The boy and I had their daily special, a peanut butter burger, loaded with toppings and condiments. $6.50 may seem a little steep for a burger but it was so filling I didn't need anything else. The poutine was really good, too - tasty gravy and fries (not soggy). The small was enough for us to share with the burgers. We didn't get a chance to try any baked goods on this visit for that reason (so.full) but don't worry, we will be back for our sweet fix. I was disappointed to see that there were no mango and coconut biscuits left because those sounded amazing - I have a feeling you need to get here early in the day to get the fresh stuff! However, they did have some yummy-looking donuts, oatcakes, cookies and pies for the tasting. They also offer lattes and caps and coffee if you're looking for a hit of caffeine with your sweet snack. We came across this quaint little spot by chance. It has great area just to the side where you can grab a picnic table or a few muskoka chairs and eat by the water. We had perfect weather that day so it was a welcome change from all the fast food we had been eating. I had their turkey sandwich (which was actual pieces of turkey meat, not luncheon meat) and was piled high with lettuce, tomatoes, etc. You had your choice of condiments. I had mine with the garlic mayo and it was delish. I also had the Newfie Poutine which was to die for. The fries alone were great -- crispy on the outside, soft on the inside -- but when you add the gravy, cheese curds and crispy bits (the "dressing"), it takes it to a whole new level. Great little deli and bakery! Their donuts are SO GOOD. Lots of flavour and not greasy or oily at all. And big! Their carrot cake is moist and flavourful and again not oily like carrot cake sometimes can be. Their smoked meat is lean and their rye bread was so fresh and soft, I could've eaten just that! While the owners of White Sails are doing a lot of things right, communications isn't one of them. I stopped by for lunch last week only to find that they are closed for 3 months. That's a bit disconcerting since I had made a sizeable detour just to go there, and, when I picked up a tortiere just two weeks earlier, there was no indication or signs they were going to close. As of this review, according to their website it's business as usual. Speaking of tortiere, two previous times when wanting one, even though it was advertised on the large sign at the entrance to the parking lot, I was told they didn't have any. That said, if/when you do get one, they're very good and recommended. The other bakery recommendation is the sugar pie. The name conjures up thoughts of tooth rattling sweetness but this version is nicely tamed down and with a lovely creamy texture. You'll still only want a small piece so an entire pie will easily serve 8 or more. Fortunately, it freezes well and it's also available by the slice. The sweet potato bread is the only artisan bread left from the selection offered previously. The potato scallion bread was outstanding so it's a puzzle why that was dropped and the sweet potato kept since the sweet potato can only been eaten toasted or in French toast. The balance of the bakery items, while better than the run of the mill supermarket fare, doesn't compare to what is offered by Juliens, German Haus, Scanway or Edible Matters. The real strength that has developed for White Sails is the deli side of things. Here they consistently shine. The French fries are hand cut and (hurray!) are double fried. This provides an excellent base for their Poutine and their Newfie fries. Just one cautionary note that both the gravy and the stuffing for the Newfie fries has savoury seasoning in it - possibly summer savoury as well in the stuffing and not everyone's tummy gets along well with that amount of savoury. Prior reviews have favourably commented about the Montreal smoked meat. Two things ensure White Sails' version is better than most: the meat is kept warm in a steamer; it is hand sliced rather than machine sliced which conserves the juiciness. The pickle served is a good quality, Montreal-style dill. To their credit, the owners are continuing to experiment with their deli offerings and were pushing the steak subs. The meat is well above average but the rest of it was pretty standard stuff. Maybe a New Jersey style or Philly style cheesesteak sub is needed to raise it to the next level. read more

This place is fantastic. It is off the beaten path a bit but I'm very glad we found the place. My girlfriend and I stumbled across the bakery last summer and have been back close to a dozen times since. If you're not willing to pay an extra couple bucks for quality, you may be tempted to complain that it is expensive. Personally, I think the prices are very fair considering not only the quality of food but also the massive portions. My girlfriend gets mad at me because when she asks what I want for lunch on a weekend the answer is almost always "Turkey Bowl!" We've had the Montreal smoked meat, Reuben, newfie poutine, and turkey bowl. All were very good. Additionally, this is on of few places where we cannot resist desert. I'm a big fan of sugar pie and I'm never disappointed. Everything they make looks delicious and everything we have tried has been great. The owners and staff have always been friendly and helpful. It always seems to be busy but indoor seating is very limited (2 small tables) so it's best to go on a nice warm sunny day and eat outside. read more

I ordered a steak and pepperoni sub, but while I was waiting, I tasted a sample of the Montreal smoked meat and it was quite succulent and scrumptious. I wound up ordering a reuben as well as a result. The sub was also very delicious. I live in the area and don't usually drop into White Sales Bakery. 4 years ago it was a bit pricey, but great portions/quality. Last week so decided to go in. The food was the same price but was half the size. I ended up buying a chocolate eclair anyways. The bun and whipped cream tasted really plain. Will not be returning there. read more

Located on the water with a lovely view, tables, chairs too. After yesterday's harrowing burger incident at the truck stop, I had to burger up. Had to. The reuben burger... omg. Their corned beef is some of the best, so tender and the m word (can't even type it). Yeah, I said it! Careful Katz. ;) I split it with my friend and we were both like Whaaaat?! Yeah, so dang good. And the hand cut fries were perfect and plenty. We shared and there were a lot left over. The service was welcoming and lovely. I was made to feel comfortable with an offering of a healthy bite of sugar pie. Not a fave but it was dense, custard like, a nice bite. While visiting family out near Peggy's Cove for a week, we drove by this place with it's colorful facade and after yelp'ing it decided to give it a try. And I'm so glad we did! We ended up coming here 3 separate times for various things and I can't rave enough about everything we tried. Location/Ambience: First of all, as a relative pointed out, the diner is situated along the corner of a main road (the Peggy's Cove Road) and you must take great care getting out as the road can be quite busy. But aside from that little quip, the place looks great from the outside with all its colors and assorted seating by the bay. Very picturesque. Indoors, it's fairly small and nothing fancy, but hey, we're here to buy our food and take it outdoors to sit by the water or straight home, so I think for the few minutes we're inside we'll let that slide. Score: 4.5/5 (for more timid drivers, it could get a little hair-raising to pull out of this place..) Food: 1) Xango: these little strips of cheese-cakey goodness apparently started out as leftover strips from other products, and because so popular they had to make them explicitly. They were recommended by the owner and I have to say - delicious. A soft cheese-cake filled pastry - sooo good. Try it. Score: 5/5 2) Sugar pie: honestly, I've never had sugar pie - this was my first, and I loved it. It was like a big butter tart, and not too sweet. We took the pie to some friends who lived in the area and didn't like sugar pies because they're too sweet, and even they thought it was the best they've had. Although I have nothing to compare against, I liked it - a lot. So score: 5/5 3) Carrot cake: moist, nice sweet (but not overly) icing. Melt in your mouth goodness. Score: 5/5 4) Multigrain bread: fresh, soft, not too dense, not too light - a little pricey (I seem to recall over $4) but worth it. I'm not a huge bread eater, but this is definitely better than most I've had. No complaints, though nothing earth shattering. Let's say score: 4.5/5 5) Prices: a little higher than average, but still a good value, considering their quality and flavours are top shelf. Great spot for great food and a fantastic selection of baked goods and lunch/dinner. Our lunch was very yummy and the staff was helpful with recommendations. The brisket sandwich and burger with fries were good enough to note. The atmosphere outside by the water was perfect to enjoy the setting and tasteful food. The food isn't the cheapest but it made for a delicious lunch spot, complete with a powdered donut for dessert.
