Nestled in a centuries old fishing community, they're home to a unique collection of gift shops, museums and art galleries, delicious restaurants, coffee and bake shops, ice-cream canteens and fish n' chip shacks. Because it's off-season, a lot of the shops were closed but it was fun to walk around ... I love being by the water. In addition to the shops, it also functions as a fishing wharf. I never knew this place existed until today. I imagine it's an awesome place in the summer with all the shops open.

I am…read moreused to cooking my lobsters at home fresh and am aware that the water should be salted but the lobsters I purchased were almost inedible because they were soooooooo salty and they also had a terrible aftertaste. They were also over cooked. I've bought pre cooked lobbies from other locations before when in a time crunch like I was this time and never had this issue. They were ruined. When paying top dollar for lobbies from a fisherman's market, you think they'd know how to cook them.

Dave gave us information about: the lifecycle of a lobster, how to determine the sex of a lobster, how there is one large cracking claw and a slightly smaller grabber claw, the general ages based on size, putting a lobster to sleep, how lobsters are caught in a trap, how to put a rubber band around the claws, ... yep a whole bunch of information on the "lobsta". To top the information provided, Dave brought out various sizes ranging from a pound to bigger than 2.5 pounds. He said he has seen an eight pounder... As for eating, they used to cook up the lobsters on site but that was shut down by complaints from Halifax and local seafood restaurants. They do ship by FedEx worldwide.

The Long Version: When my husband and I were in Halifax recently, we did 2 Markets back-to-back, this one and the Halifax Brewery Market and I personally liked the Halifax Brewery Market better, as it had more interesting foods and vendors and wasn't as crowded. My impression is that this Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market is more for tourists and the Halifax Brewery Market is more for locals, but I could be wrong. I got a Pancit Bihon for my husband and I to share at Pinoy's Best Halifax. It was $7 for a small serving. It tasted good and had this Liptons Chicken Soup smell that I loved, lol. Weird, I know. I just didn't like that they microwaved it in a plastic container. I would have preferred it if it was kept in metal warming trays and served into a cardboard container. My husband got a 4L jug of Maple syrup from Ripley's Maple ($58) for his sister. She was coming to Halifax too but not when the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market would be open so she asked him to get it for her. He gave it to her in Halifax and she was driving home, so we cannot attest to whether the jug would survive a flight in checked baggage, it would be at your own risk, lol. I'm glad we checked out this market. If we were in the area again on future visits to Halifax I would drop by, but I wouldn't specifically plan to go to it like we did this time. (179)

A fresh lobster is probably the most uniquely Maritime souvenir to take back home, and no one does it better than Clearwater. Lobsters are fresh and glorious looking and won't last long once you get them back home. And for the non-lobster lovers, there are other foodie gifts to take home. I do have to add that, while the price of the lobsters is competitive, there are additional costs to consider. After all, you can't expect the lobsters to sit in the seat next to you.

We ordered the large lobster poutine, 2 piece fish and chips and the six scallops. We received our food. It took about 30minutes before getting food. But it was freshly prepared. The scallops were lightly breaded and not greasy. Texture of these local scallops were firmer and sweeter than ones I had in Portland Maine. The lobster poutine-a huge portion of buttery lobster over well cooked fries with a yummy white gravy-YUM. The fish and chips-nicely cooked and could tell the fish is FRESH. French fries were nicely cooked and not greasy. What a great Fresh seafood meal at this restaurant.
