Highgate is a smaller facility that is much more intimate. They have a bulletin board with about a dozen pictures of staff that have been there for at least 10 years. When we ate a meal in their dining room I noticed (1) their tables are widely spaced for walkers and (2) some of the administrative staff actually serve the tables. They are all very intimate with the residents. The food is great by the way. We were fortunate to tour just as they had an opening in assisted living. However, after 10 days they called us in for a conference. There had been an incident and they recognized that he was in an early stage of dementia. We were afraid they might say he "wasn't a good fit" for the place. We said that in the meeting and all three staffers immediately reacted for us to be assured, that this is what they are equipped to handle. They have people who are trained in dealing with dementia and have a program for helping keep the minds active which can otherwise lead to pent up frustration. We realize we were too close to see the subtle changes but when they explained how all the little signs added up, it really explained a lot. When something like this hits a family member you are in denial, you don't see it happening. We didn't. They started him in the program and shortly had an opening in memory care where they get the same great food. These people really care and evaluated his behavior. Another place just told us that he was "misbehaving". Highgate is much much better. We're very glad to have found them.

Everyone I've talked with at Home Instead has been pleasant and professional, and I believe their caretakers really helped him to recover. Finally, our mom a private person was very hesitant to have anyone in her home to begin. Over years she has developed a trust and reliance on her care givers. The kindness and caring nature of the care givers from Home Instead shines through so they are now integral and welcome parts of her daily life.

She was just just discharged against medical advice, came home weighing just 94 pounds - 40 pound weight loss in 7 months for someone that was a healthy weight. She looks like a holocaust survivor. She is a quadriplegic and cannot feed herself. She was basically left to die there. The food is terrible, as they have a vegan chef. They are understaffed, so patients wait for hours. There is a resident that screams, "Help!" Pretty much around the clock. Her first doctors appointment after leaving the facility, led to her immediate admission to a hospital for malnutrition. Her hair is coming out in clumps. I would only ever go here if I were suicidal.

In fact the complete opposite. Call lights are answered within minutes, the patients I see laugh and joke with the staff even though they are busy, they spend the brief time they have making sure needs are met as best as possible. I do what I can to help communicate and I follow up. So far all of the requests and doctors orders have been met or exceeded! My mother is in this facility. It is clean (I always see someone cleaning!) and though an older building it has all that my mother needs. She is a long term patient currently living here and has since Sept 2025. She's had many appointments and starting with my rockstar Brooke (Admin Assistant) that makes rides possible and any other communication details, to Jen the Queen of activities and things interactive, to ALL of the CNA's, nurses, social workers, doctors and therapists (who am I missing??) that look after her. She has really thrived here. She loves to sleep and would all day, but they get her up and interacting to keep her mind working. She has come out of her shell more. They change her often because she is bed bound. She has NO bed sores. They arranged for a more functional wheelchair and do everything they can to make her comfortable and get her up. If she stops eating or doesn't eat very much, the staff lets me know right away. I will say, if you don't advocate for your loved one, or yourself you may not have as good of an experience. I show up several times a week even if it's brief to check on her and communicate her needs. Everyone is so busy doing their best and it's hard work. If you show appreciation, BE KIND (even if you're hurting). Be curious, not rude, about the care you (your loved one) are getting, ask questions and communicate your needs. You will be thoughtfully cared for. Have patience you're not the only person in the building! Anyway, I am so thankful to God for finding my mom this facility. It's so much better than where she was! We love it here.

They always seem to be short staffed, thus the quality of resident care suffers. Communication is very poor. There is no 2-way communication between resident's and staff. If you fall hopefully, you are by one of 2 buttons to call for assistance, then you wait. Communication system is archaic at best. The food is not good. Serving times are late. Sit down for a meal, the serving time comes and you wait and wait, sometimes 20-30 minutes or longer before the food is served. Usually, staff is in there bs'ing and getting their meals, or eating in the kitchen. While staff is in there, hygiene requirements are not met. They seem to continually have bookkeeping issues.
