To the Highgate Angels, I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone at Highgate Senior Living in Vancouver for the exceptional care and "caring" provided during the last year of mom's life. As dementia crept into her life, it was no longer safe for her to stay in the home she had lived in for more than 70 years, even with additional help and companionship. When we decided Highgate was the best environment for her, convincing her to make the move was made easy by Autumn Mathis, Steve Li, and Brooke Murray who came to her home to do an assessment. Their kindness at that visit made mom feel like she was the most important person in the world. We were also invited to have lunch in The Cottage before she moved in. Once again, everyone there made her feel very special. Even though she would have liked to stay in her home, she understood the need for the move and was excited to make it. Because she was my home, I was able to visit every day. Mom was also allowed to bring her kitty with her, so it made it easy for me to feed and water her and scoop the cat box when I visited. Mom was there only a month when the pandemic closed Highgate's doors to outside visitors. Yet during that short time, I came to know all of the Care Partners and many of the residents in The Cottage and saw how genuinely they cared for each resident. From the activity sheet, I could see how Rose integrated residents into those activities, giving everyone a chance to shine in their special areas, like mom's years of spelunking and the books she and her husband wrote and published. Ray and Austin went above and beyond helping us get a private phone set up in mom's room, which took weeks of haggling with CenturyLink. This was the kind of extra effort everyone at Highgate provided. When mom caught COVID19 in April 2020, Steve called every day to keep us posted on her health and progress. Fortunately, she had a somewhat mild case and recovered in a few weeks. We were able to visit from outside her window and it sure made her feel good as it did us. I never worried about how well she was being cared for. As mom's health began to deteriorate more rapidly, the Care Partners were in her room much more frequently, some teary-eyed when talking with me. Many stopped in to say hi before their shifts started or they stopped to say goodbye when their shifts were over. They always talked about her great smile. I always felt that the Care Partners and managers at Highgate loved mom as much as her family did. We will be eternally grateful for all Highgate did for mom when we couldn't be there with her! Mom passed away on February 5, 2021 at the age of 92. As things begin to open up and visitors can again see their loved ones in person, I'm looking forward to volunteering, as is one of mom's granddaughters Angie! Sincerely, Mary L. My Mom moved into Highgate Senior Living at what seemed like was going to be the beginning of the end of Covid.  She moved from Oklahoma City to Vancouver, Washington in January and into Highgate assisted living in March.  We were elated to learn that 100% of residents were vaccinated!  So many big changes for her.  We could not have done any of this without the wonderful staff at Highgate. Autumn and her team walked us through everything, were with us, and were so helpful every step of the way. What sets Highgate apart from everywhere else we looked is the team spirit and the camaraderie.  Virtually anyone you ask, will either have an answer for you or get immediately back to you.  With covid, there were many more hoops to jump through.  Autumn and her staff could not have been better prepared.  Highgate is a family-most staff have been there for years, which says so much!  They all work together to meet the needs of their residents as well as the residents' families.  It has been 4 months now, and it definitely feels like home to my Mom! She loves the staff, the food, and all the activities. The staff are very friendly and organized and plan wonderful activities for the residents.  From the minute you walk through the door, Arnada and Valerie will make you feel so welcomed!  Ray in Maintenance is such a wonderful soul!  He painted Mom's new place with her favorite colors and put together a complicated TV console, just for her... and us!  Rose does such an amazing job of planning activities and seeing to the residents' needs, taking pictures, serving popcorn and keeping us all in line!!  I can't say enough about Steve and Brooke, they are the nurses on staff and have such caring hearts!  I wish I could list every single person that has personally been so kind and helpful to us! My mother was moved into Highgate after leaving the hospital. She lived in a one bedroom apartment with a view of the beautiful courtyard. The first day she arrived the staff was helpful with moving furniture, connecting TV and phone as well as showing her around. She was underweight when she arrived and quickly put on weight eating the great meals. She would go on the weekly (sometimes daily) van rides to fun activities and met many new friends. (they have the best Activities director, EVER) She likes all of the caregivers and began to change from being totally withdrawn to forming many attachments to the great caregivers and those who work at Highgate. She has been at highgate for two years and is now in the Cottage. She is doing well and spends most of her time in the "Hub" taking part in activities and socializing with her new friends. I have been impressed with the staff members at Highgate. The nurses are helpful, caring, and work very hard to keep residents happy and healthy. I have always felt that no matter what the problem, Mel and the rest of the staff work hard to solve the problem to make life better for Mom. This is a great facility to place your loved one and the staff is always willing to make changes, brainstorm, or do whatever it takes to make the resident and their family comfortable and happy. read more

Our mother moved into Highgate's memory care facility, the Cottage, two months ago, after spending almost a year at another care facility. It has only been two months, but it appears that the move was an excellent decision. Whereas the care in the other facility was, at best, poor and indifferent, the care so far at Highgate appears to be just what our mother needed. Every time we have visited her, whether we have let Highgate know that we are coming in advance or not, she has quickly showed up clean, well coiffed and dressed in different clean clothes. Unlike at her previous care facility, when the caregivers come to pick her up after our visits, she willingly goes toward the caregivers rather than shying away from them. Finally, I strongly believe that Highgate's emphasis on having residents spend most of their time in the communal area rather than in their bedrooms makes so much sense for memory care patients, such as our mother. Due to very necessary COVID protocols, family and friends are only able to visit our mother in the lobby, and are not able to spend time with her in her room and in the common areas to get a better idea of what her daily life is like. Until COVID recedes, this unfortunately will continue to be the case, but we can't fault Highgate as there is nothing they can do about this. read more

Today I observed an incredible employee of Highgate named Valerie. My father is a resident at Highgate, I make 3 - 4 trips a week, and I live 30 miles away. On numerous occasions, I have made phone calls to Valerie to see if I can get minor things accomplished without a trip, and she always finds a way to help me out. Today I observed Valerie while I sat in the lobby for 25 minutes while my dad finished lunch. As people came to her desk, Valerie endlessly answered question after question so graciously and with a smile. She's the first person you see when you enter Highgate's lobby. Staff members, family members, residents, medical personnel, and deliveries continued to bombard her with questions and requests while I sat there. She was engaging, approachable, and continued to wear a smile while she answered the phone, wrote down verbal directions, reminded a resident what they would be serving for lunch, showed Amazon where to put all the packages, and looked up information for hospice personnel. Valerie is truly AMAZING and Highgate and all of us are lucky to have her. Thank you, Valerie! read more

Thank you so much to everyone at Highgate Vancouver, who had the opportunity to touch my mom's life in such a positive way. After almost a year at the facility, mom unfortunately lost her life from a fall that caused severe brain injury. Her last days were complete dependance on others. It was this time that I felt the complete care and compassion of all the staff at Vancouver Highgate. From the people that made her meals, all the way up to Autumn who went out of her way to give me time with my mother in her last days. No one ever made me feel like I was asking too much. I know mom was loved and cared for by her reaction to the staff that took care of her on a daily basis. I miss my mother terribly, and will miss the people and staff at Highgate that made her last year a positive one. Highgate Senior Living has been our Dad's home and our second home for almost two years. The team there is an extension of of our family. From the time Valerie or Ananda greet you as you enter the cozy living room entrance to the administrative care and leadership Autumn or Mike assist you with you feel like family. Activities and exercise (among other things) carried out with enthusiasm by Rose are a highlight. The medical oversight Brook and her team administer with compassion make life in the 80s and 90s as good as it can get. I know it takes the whole team from house keeping, maintenance, kitchen, dining hall, and care givers who brighten the day with a personal touch and smile. They always greet their friends with a smile and a kind word or action. I wish I could call each one out by name. My father has been a resident in the memory care unit for over two years. He was there through the COVID outbreak, and the staff did everything they could to keep him happy and comfortable. We appreciate the personal attention my dad receives from the caregivers. It is apparent they truly care about him! It has been difficult for us not to be able to visit, but video chats and eventually in person outdoor visits have been cheerfully provided. That and the communication about his needs and what we can do to help, have helped all of us cope. The staff recently let us know my dad would like a bigger TV. When I asked for assistance with this, I quickly received a call from Ray in maintenance who provided guidance as to size limits. Once the TV and mount were purchased, Ray had them up the next day! While there to drop off the TV, I mentioned to Autumn that I missed getting to see my dad in his community. The very next day she sent a great picture of my dad with a big smile on his face! read more

My 89 year old father was staying in Independent Living at another community and the time had come for him to be moved to memory care. My wife and I struggled with this challenge as he is still quite active and can also be cantankerous at times. We visited several memory care communities but none of them felt right for one reason or another. We really wanted to find a place where the staff had a lot of interaction with the residents and didn't just have them sit in front of a TV all day. We had heard lots of good things about Highgate and as soon as we checked it out we knew it was the perfect fit. It was small, clean and intimate with a warm family feel, and it did NOT have the unpleasant odor that so many of the other places had. And the staff is just awesome and helpful in so many ways. We completely understand why Highgate was so highly recommended and now we do the same! read more

My dad has been a resident in Memory Care for two years now. My family is so pleased with the level of care he consistently receives there. I am delighted to go in and join with the singalong and/ or have lunch with my dad on an ongoing basis. The chef is excellent and I have enjoyed Thanksgiving and Christmas meals with Dad in the lovely main Dining Room. The residents are treated with respect and their needs are met in a timely manner. Mostly, I am there in the mornings, but have had occasion to be there in the evenings and, a few times, even late at night. There are fun events that include the whole family, such as a Hoedown and BBQ with live music. Everyone has a great time. Dad gets to his doctor appointments on time, dressed appropriately for the weather, clean-shaven, etc. I am VERY fond of the staff at Highgate and their kindness and efficiency!! 5 stars. read more

Highgate is truly a special place with incredible staff who helped Mom feel right at home within a very short period of time! Autumn, Mike, Steve, and so many others were definitely there for us with open arms when we needed them in accommodating her needs, and made things so seamless in helping settle her into her beautiful room. Positive energy and spirit abounds throughout Highgate on a daily basis! There are so many wonderful organized activities to keep Mom active and engaged. She especially loves the exercise classes, bingo, and various outings, as well as the delicious and nutritious meals prepared by an amazing chef from vegetables grown right there in the courtyard's raised garden beds. We couldn't be happier with her care and living situation, and would not hesitate to recommend Highgate to friends and family! read more

After hours searching the many different options, looking for a place that you think might fit your loved one, is daunting to say the least. Three failed attempts at other options, we decided to move our dad into Highgate Senior Living. From our first meeting with sales to now, it has been nothing but professional. Everything went smoothly and we felt very comfortable. Of course, the real test is how does my dad like it?? We all know how hard transitions are especially for the elderly. The staff made his transition as painless as possible. A little restless through the quarantine and now he can be with the other residents, he has made friends and he is doing well. My husband and I moved to WA so we could be closer to our daughter and when we visited Highgate Senior Living ,we found such a feeling of calmness that we knew we had found the place we could call our home. Moving my mother from her 3 bdrm home of many years to a 1 bdrm apartment in a senior living residence was really scary for her. After 4 days of being there, she is a much happier, healthier woman. The support and caring of the staff and the other people living there is so wonderful. Mom was not eating much living at home alone and her health was not good. The food served at HG is so flavorful and healthy. I enjoy joining her for meals! Mom is eating well, feeling better and enjoying herself. The nurses are really on top of things. After a series of falls, my mother was suddenly booted out of an assisted living facility because they didn't offer the higher level of care she needed. Happily Highgate had room for her. We recently moved our dad from another facility to Highgate Vancouver in the Memory Care Cottage. Mike Davis and Autumn Mathis were wonderful helping us through this difficult time.
