I don't have a ton of experience with this salon, but I stopped in for a blowout on my lunch break one day because I was going on vacation that night. The blow out was really nice and fast. The stylist did a mini consult to ask what I wanted and what the occasion was, and I explained my hair is thicker and can be frizzy. She was great and really friendly. They also offered a drink right when I checked in for my appointment. They were a bit pricey for just a 45 min blowout, but the location in union square was really convenient so I'd consider going back. read more

AMAZING!! I found Clementine through searches for curly hair, short hair, and LGBTQ+ friendly salons. I went in wanting advice on how to manage my hair and also to cut it short for the first time. I scheduled a 2 hour curly cut with Sarah. Sarah was more than knowledgeable when it came to giving me advice on my curly hair. She listened to what I wanted and was looking for, and was also able to give me tips on what she thought was going to be best. I gave her full control and told her I'd trust whatever she did and that was the best decision! Sarah and everyone in the salon was so welcoming and friendly as soon as I arrived. They offered the many drinks and snack they have numerous times and were always making sure I was comfortable and had what I needed. I could not have had a better experience! I HIGHLY recommend. I will definitely be going back the next time I'm in Boston and am looking for a hair cut!!! read more

It's rare that I've been to a salon and brought in a picture and got the EXACT color that was in the picture I showed. There have been stylists that have come close, but today, Julie performed what I thought was a miracle and gave me exactly what I was looking for. My "natural multi-toned pink" is spot on, and I am BEYOND happy with how gorgeous it looks. I had dinner with a friend right after leaving the salon, and she took her own pictures of my hair in different lighting because she was obsessed with all the many beautiful colors. DON'T GO to this salon! Avoid it at all costs! Ashley ruined my hair. I wanted a few new grays at my roots covered up with a color that matched my natural brown, and wanted the rest of my hair left uncolored. Ashley did not listen to anything I said and turned my entire head of hair the most unnatural, brassy, monotone RED that had no dimension at all. For week afterwards, everyone in my life kept asking me why I had decided to dye my hair such a drastic red. Truly unbelievable how terrible and amateurish of a hair color job this was. Ashley did not listen to what I wanted at all. These are are also hair color mistakes 101. She was incredibly distracted the whole time, and kept asking me the same questions four times -- not a state you want someone dyeing your hair to be in. Finally, she did not give me the courtesy of drying my hair and us looking at it together before I left the salon -- something I've never had happen in my life. She rushed me out, saying that she didn't have time. The way Clementine handled this was even more awful. They were rude, and they only reimbursed me 50% of the cost of the color job, which is 30% of the total if you remember that tip went into what it cost me. Afterwards, it cost me three times as much as Ashely's awful work to fix my hair color. Clementine is also dishonest with its clients and, frankly, super backward. I called them before making shy appointment to ask if they used natural, ammonia-free hair color, and they said they did. When I showed up at the studio , they said that they did not have natural, ammonia-free hair color and tried to convince me that ammonia hair color was the way to go. No one in this day and age should be using hair color full of toxic chemicals. There are too many good natural options out there. read more

AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! DO NOT use this salon, if I could give it 0 stars I would. In spring 2019, I went in for bright highlights and a trim. I specifically asked for lighter and brighter and to keep the length, no layers. I showed a picture of the white blonde as a reference. She cut layers that made absolutely no sense and framed my face like the pictured dog. The picture of me in the white sweater is before, I even included the picture I took in the salon chair, in the collage, to show it was long and healthy and she completely butchered it. FURTHERMORE, during the process my stylist was overbooked. She was doing a wash halfway through my color, I wasn't processing she was literally in the middle of doing my color. Immediately after the cut/color she did not even ask me if I liked it she had me get up from the chair and pay and by the time I looked up she already had another client in the chair. She was rude and so overbooked that she rushed through everything and ruined my hair. Not only that, I paid over $300 for them to absolutely ruin my hair. I had to pay $1700 for a color correction and extensions a month before my wedding. OBVIOUSLY not done by them. I'm writing this review now, three years later, because they booked me for an appointment without my consent and are threatening to charge my card for AN APPOINTMENT I DIDN'T MAKE. DO NOT risk it. I really wanted to like this place because of all the good reviews, but I think they're trying too hard to be cool and trendy, and not trying as hard to impress new customers. To be fair, I can really only comment on Ashley, who was my stylist. I requested an appointment online and submitted a bunch of pictures of my hair and what I was hoping for. Their website encourages it as a means of a "consultation" before actually going in. I thought it was a great idea. I was scheduled with Ashley and when I arrived, she said "ok, what are we doing today?" And I asked if she had looked at the pictures I had submitted which she said she had not. That was frustrating. However she was pleasant enough to chat with and she washed my hair and started cutting it. Midway through the cut, she asked if I minded if she did not blow dry my hair, because she was eager to leave to run some errands. Ok, that's all well and good but then why was I charged the full amount for a cut and blow dry?? Overall I felt rushed and like I was wasting her time. When I got home, I noticed a piece of hair that was longer than the rest and had to snip it myself. How does that even happen?? I then had to blow out my hair myself and straighten it so I could actually see the cut. It felt sloppy, and there were hardly any layers. I bit the bullet and made an appointment with my favorite hair stylist I hadn't gone to in a while at another salon (coincidentally named Ashley) for just a few days later so she could fix my hair. I should have gone to her to begin with but it had been a while, and I was branching out, trying new salons, blah blah, I won't make that mistake again. My favorite stylist showed me how uneven my haircut was, and pointed out one large chunk in the front that was shorter than the rest. Maybe it was an attempt at a layer, but it was completely blunt, hanging out by itself, not blended, etc. She managed to soften the angles and make my hair look gorgeous AND she blew it dry. I guess having a bad haircut with one Ashley was worth getting me back to be reunited with another Ashley, but I really wouldn't recommend Clementine. read more

I went to Patrick for a cut and balayage. He is the only stylist who has ever made sense of my half straight half curly hair. I came in with a picture and he explained to me how my hair was different from the woman in the picture, what he could do to make it look like that, and what that would mean for me in terms of maitenance and future cut possibilities. I've literally never had a cut that looked remotely like the picture I brought in, so I was shocked when he absolutely nailed it. He also taught me how to style it in a few minutes so that it looks so much better than I've ever gotten it to look before. The color was stunning as well, and he gave me great advice when I told him I wanted to DIY some bright semi-permanent colors on top. Excited for my first full salon experience for hair coloring specifically for balayage - came out a bit disappointed. I called in to request an appointment and was happy that they had a slot open for me with such short notice. The receptionist kindly let me know that because the time slot was short, it would be a color only - no cut or blowdry and I was completely fine with that. I let them know that I was looking for a balayage and she said that would be okay. They asked me if I had a hairdresser in mind and I asked for anyone who is experienced in color. Franchesca was the hairdresser who took care of me that day and she was extremely friendly and accommodating. However, I wasn't satisfied with the work she did on my hair. I had asked for a warm, caramel brown balayage and provided several pictures. I had specifically asked her to lighten the top part of my hair so that it would be a brown/light brown balayage instead of a black/brown balayage which is what I got (if I can even call it that). The technique she used was teasing each section of hair before she painted it so that it would be a more natural look. However, the black to brown gradient ended up looking pretty awful in some parts of my head. My hair was already slightly colored from my previous box dye (pictures provided) and you can see in the after that there isn't much of a difference. In different lighting, my hair is lighter than the after picture but not by a lot. They helped me rough dry it so we could see the color, again letting me know that it wouldn't be a full blowout which I was fine with. The whole process took a few hours. The price listed for a half balayage is $165+, full balayage is $195+, for the work done on my hair was approximately $250 without tip. I was able to use a $10 off by checking in on Yelp. I truly, truly appreciated how friendly and kind they were to me, but I really wasn't satisfied with my first full salon experience considering the price I paid for what I got. I would have rather them be honest with me and let me know that they could not do it or did not have the capacity to do the balayage. I cannot say enough good things about Clementine. I've been coming here for my cuts and color since I moved back to the Boston area about 1.5 years ago. The staff is so welcoming, funny, and outspoken (in the best possible way!). I love seeing everyone's creative work. I've consistently recommended the studio to my friends and coworkers and they all love it as well. Toni has been such a dream hairstylist. Every time I see her it's like seeing an old friend. Her work is consistently beautiful, fresh and fun. Even when I come in for just a root touch up and trim, she puts the same level of excitement and enthusiasm into her work as she would if I were getting a complete makeover. Toni has colored my hair platinum, a hazy blue, silver, pink, peachy, and brown and they've all be gorgeous and wearable and faded perfectly! I saw Patrick's work at a different local salon but he no longer worked there so I tracked him down to Clementine Hair studio. I went in looking for a cut and balayage highlights. Patrick listened to what I was looking for and went to work. He wasn't super chatty but I like that. He used a combination of foil and painted balayage techniques. I walked out of the salon loving my hair but after seeing it the next morning when I styled it myself I wasn't as happy with it. I called the salon (he was busy but promptly returned my call) and he was more than happy to fit me in that same day to fix it. He gave me a few more well placed balayage highlights and a toner to warm up the color. The next morning I still loved it :) thank you Patrick! I am absolutely floored by how wonderful my experience was. I decided to go blonder to make my own world a little more sunny. I LOVE how balyage looks, and I've done this before in various stages, but after some quarantine-induced at-home-hair-treatments-gone-wrong I was pretty nervous. But the vibes in the salon helped me feel a little more at ease. And then Noelle came in. She was so kind, and helped me articulate exactly what I was looking for. I had been thinking about doing a side panel on my undercut, and she helped me feel confident in that decision! She was also really understanding that I had do to some work while she was painting - I don't love to chat too much when I'm getting my hair done, and she was totally amenable to that. She was super communicative throughout the whole process and told me what step was next, and so on and so forth. Now, I'll pause her to talk about the other folks in the salon who kept walking past my chair and saying "wow that looks SO pretty." I know it was a compliment to Noelle's work, but it also hyped ME up and made me really excited to see the finished product, and when I did, I was STOKED. I am normally very paranoid about bad haircuts, but Patrick gave me the courage to get bangs last summer and I absolutely LOVED it! He is super attentive, very observant and thoughtful, and a total wizard. If you properly explain what you want, he can do it. They also give you free bang trims if you cut your hair there. I have since moved to New York and I miss Patrick and Clementine so much! Can't wait to cut my hair here the next time I'm in Boston. I regret to share that I had a horrible experience here :/ I came in for a pretty basic haircut-- a long bob and no work on my bangs. When I arrived for my appointment time, my stylist was just getting started on another client but I understood and waited. When I finally sat down, I told her what I was looking for, and she suggested chopping off 4". I said I was hoping to preserve more of the length, which she intensely pushed back on (red flag). She then says she plans on doing layers, so I ask if she could do the kind that would preserve the look of the blunt cut since I did not ask for layers. She took that personally and reminded me she is a professional (??). Nobody was bringing her skill into question; I literally described the haircut I wanted, which she asked me to do, but ok. She then proceeds to say "don't worry I'm the worst client myself... not to say you are," but she most certainly communicated that I was (the irony). At this point I've maybe said 4 sentences total. Later on she aggressively insists on cutting my bangs and using a flat iron on my hair, and I politely decline. This person then starts talking about how their ocd makes them want to do all these things to clients' hair as I'm sitting there waiting for the slow torture to end. This was the most unprofessional hair stylist I've ever been to (and I'm an 80's baby so have been to a few!). I never write negative Yelp reviews but thought I should warn people who don't want to get bullied at the hair salon. It was not my responsibility to have to manage her emotions, but that's what I ended up doing :/ My haircut turned out fine, but the experience was an awful one. read more

I'm sure this salon is fabulous for most people, but this review is for the devacut. It was clear that the stylist (Francheska) doesn't cut a lot of curly hair, and doesn't really understand curls. As she cut, she finger combed and flattened the hair, separating all the curls. As a result, she took off way too much, and the cut is over an inch shorter than I requested. Rather than layers, I have blocky sections. The cut doesn't adhere to the clumps of curls. I've been getting devacuts for almost 10 years, and this is a mess. I wanted to try a new spot, and I really regret it. Francheska even commented at the end "wow, it really curls up, doesn't it," and acknowledged that it was much shorter than intended. At $85, this was a pricy cut, and it's going to take me a couple months to grow it out to the intended length, which is a bummer. For a better experience, I would recommend Le Petit Salon in Cambridge, or Katy at Pure Hair Design in the South End. It's really too bad -- everyone there is totally lovely, and it's a very cute spot. read more

I have struggled with my curls for years, but recently developed a love for them. I went in, I'll tell ya a little bit skeptical, but needing a quick trim. Usually "curly cuts" mean stylists ignoring your requests, assuming they know best and chopping your hair and defusing it into a large, fluffy cotton ball. Clementine did just this. Did I tip out of pity she managed to cut her fingers like 4 times? Yes. Do I hope my chopped curls come to life and haunt the salon for the rest of eternity. Yes. But at least, my TERRIBLE experience will guide you to GO LITERALLY ANYWHERE ELSE. I have a bob now, a triangular, fluffy, bob. Am I convinced she knew what she was doing *at all*? No. Simply another traumatic experience for a now *very sad* curly headed girl. Time to massage coconut oil into my hair every night for the next 2 years to regain my beautiful locks. I came here for highlighting my hair for the very first time after reading many reviews. I was not disappointed - Francheska did my hair, and she was wonderful. I was not completely happy with how bright my hair was after the first bleach, so I called back the salon within a week, and she was able to tone down the brightness for free! That's quality customer service. I am not one to splurge on hair usually, but Clementine's will be my go-to salon from now on. Also their products smell amazing!!! I had spots on the back of my head, stripe-y highlights, and it was not the cool-tone ombre color I had asked for. Francesca to the rescue! She knew exactly how to fix it and I walked out with color that I was absolutely obsessed with. She also did the BEST job styling my hair. I really wanted to give a five star rating "/ I was confident that I would be walking out of the salon giving this salon a five star rating but experienced a few disappointments with my experience. Everyone's experience is different, so this is just based on my sole experience. I made an appointment here based on the stellar reviews they received. I checked out each artists pages and decided to book with Patrick based on some of the work that he had previously done on others. Patrick was super friendly. In fact, everyone here was very friendly and each and every one of them did their best to make me feel welcome at their new salon. I'm someone who tends to stay quiet and just go with everything instead of speaking up, so partially it's my fault because I didn't say anything. I paid $290 + tip for a cut, partial foil, and color. I could tell he was working really hard, so I do think he deserved it, but as far as the result, I think it was too much for what the final result came out as. The cut: The cut was fantastic. I have no complaints here. He added in some layers like I wanted, and gave me some side swept bangs like I wanted. Partial foil: The foils were placed too close to my face that I had to do my best to try to avoid inhaling the chemicals from the lightener so much. He also lightened my roots (already bleached) the same time he added lightener to the mid part of my hair on the strands he was lightening. This is when I started thinking, uh oh. Color: I was aiming for a deep ashy purple hair with magenta/pink undertones. When he blow dryed a section of my hair to show me the final result, I now had neon purple tips on my hair. This is where the "uh oh" part of the partial foil section comes into play. He could tell immediately that I did not like it and offered to fix it by adding in a deeper color and toner to tone out the vibrance of the purple tips. It worked and I was overall pleased with how the second result came out compared to the first. I was truly thankful that he insisted on fixing it, because knowing me, I would've silently left the salon not saying anything and probably would've sucked it up and tried to hide it in a bun until it washed out. There was also a lot of color stained on my scalp. He said it would wash out eventually. He did make a lot of effort to try and clean up the color stains on my face, ear, and forehead. Then I got home and put my hair in a pony tail and let out a huge gasp when I saw my entire neck stained pink. I tried to gently clean it and eventually became frustrated so I just took another shower to try to clean all the color off of my neck and head. The positive was that it washed away more of the "purple-ness" in my hair and left me with a burgundy-ish color, the negative was that my scalp was still stained and neck was still stained. Normally you go to a salon for pigmented color jobs for a professional job, but it looked like a DIY project on my head with color stains all over my neck and scalp. I hate to write a less than 5 star review, especially for a newly opened business, but unfortunately I did not receive a 5 star hair salon result that I came in for. Sorry guys. I would call Toni LoPresti my Hairy Godmother if it didn't imply that she was super hairy herself. Toni is a genius who cares about you and your hair routine and somehow making you enjoy doing your hair. She listens to your concerns, she understands doing your hair everyday is a pain in the ass and wants you to walk out into the world feeling like a million bucks. About me: I'm ethnically mixed so I have very thick, curly tresses. I've also gone from long platinum blond to short black, long again, to naturally highlighted pixie. We've been through it all and Toni has been there every step of the way. I live in Los Angeles now and if I could include a flight home, to see Toni, in my hair cut/color budget, I would. About Toni: She used to be at LIQUID in the South End, now she's here in Somerville just for us!! She comes from a hair stylist family (her mom is also a hair stylist in Winchester), so basically she knew what the heck she was doing even before she went to beauty school. She always looks great, which I like because if my hair stylist looks put together then I trust that I'm in good hands. Clementine is a gem. The owner, Toni, is incredibly genuine, honest, talented, and kind. She handles herself and her business with grace and style. I hope she succeeds three-fold. The salon is small and chic, tasteful yet funky, good music, relaxed and cool. No hassle parking, right next to union square in Somerville. I can always book an appointment in a reasonable timeframe for a busy salon with talented people. The receptionist is SO NICE (seriously...when do you hear that??). Prices are the same as I have paid at pretty high-end salons, but the experience overall is better because it is smaller and friendlier. I have seen 2 different stylists here, and they're ALL friendly and happy to have you return to the salon, no matter who you see. They will work with you to make you happy with your hair and they are generous in all ways to ensure it happens. This salon, and its stylists, are fantastic. I made a first time appointment with Jonathan, and was greeted by a warm, casual, simple salon - not necessarily any frills, but more than comfortable. Jonathan gave me a balyage treatment, and I was mostly satisfied with the outcome, minus a few too-light pieces around my face. Jonathan told me to phone him anytime if I decided I wanted to low-light the areas I didn't love. Sure enough, I called a week later, he fit me into his schedule, and he made the changes free of charge. Clementine is definitely my new hair salon! It's right in Union Square, which is awesome, and the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. I got a cut and color by Patrick and I can not say enough. Patrick listened to what I wanted to do, looked at the pictures I brought in, and made some suggestions. It turned out exactly like I wanted it to. The color is great and my hair feels so much lighter and healthier. I love it so much! In addition, Patrick gave me some tips and tricks on how to do the curls he did in my hair when I mentioned I didn't know how. If you are looking for a great salon, with friendly people who really listen to what you want done, definitely come here. I have found my new salon!!! Patrick cut and colored my hair 2 weeks before my wedding. It was amazing! He also styled my hair on my wedding day. I can't speak highly enough of both Patrick and the entire staff at Clementine!!! They had an amazing spread ready for us, complete with snacks and wedding day beverages! We couldn't have felt more welcome. Honestly, I haven't been more impressed with a salon, ever. Patrick does an amazing job of choosing the best colors for me and is meticulous in how he places the foils. His cuts are just as good. I've had a medium-length, angled bob for quite a while, but he's great at mixing things up with a few extra layers, some long side bangs, or showing me how to style my hair wavy or messy. I came in yesterday with long, severely damaged hair, grown out from an inverted bob. I couldn't even run my fingers through my hair it was so knotted, so I knew I'd have to lose 4-6 inches to get it back to healthy territory. They take walk-ins! :DDD So I called at, I kid you not, 2:38, and was in for a 3pm appointment. I got matched with Jonathan, whose cuts are $55 (plus tip of course), which is a lot for me. But this cut was do or die. I did not come prepared with pictures or an intention, but I pulled up some shots of peoples hair I liked when I was in the chair. I told Jonathan I wanted to keep as much length as possible because I was growing it out, but that I was worried about short cuts other than a bob because I *did not want to look like a newscaster.* I said this over and over. My hair is naturally wavy, but he blew it out, and did *exactly* what I didn't want: he had the top layers flipped under and the bottom, shoulder-length layers flipped out, and no volume on top--give me a navy sportscoat, I'm Katie fucking Couric. I made him blow the bottom bits back under, but they'd already gotten prior "heat info" from that blowdryer, and were thereby uncooperative. I looked ok by most people's, and Jonathan's, standards, but basically, I'd said "do anything but this" and he did *that one thing* to my tresses. Mind you, I would've stopped this shenanigans earlier, but I couldn't really see what was going on because I had to remove my eyeglasses. Curse of the four-eyed woman, I guess. It was hella humid yesterday so by end of day my hair was doing its usual wavy routine, and the cut was really conducive to it. If Jonathan would've diffuser-dried my lob into its natural curls, or used a smaller round brush for the ends to give them some curl in the blowout, I wouldn't have been so disappointed. But when you pay $70, and say "don't turn me into Katie Couric," and then go home looking like KC's long-lost brunette sis--a girl's gotta Yelp about it. TL;DR: points for walk-in availability, points for quality and kindess of the staff, and points for location, but zero points for listening and zero points for giving me what I came in there for, so 3 stars all-around. read more

I can't praise this place enough. I saw their sign a few days ago and was intrigued. I had been in the hospital dealing with a lot of health issues, still have drains in. But I decided I needed to change it up a bit, plus showering with a picc line is difficult, especially washing one's hair. So I called up yesterday for an appointment, they were super friendly on the phone. Got an appointment for today. I was excited to come and see that they were ACTUALLY accessible! There's a ramp! Which is really hard to find! I got set up with Patrick. Both him and Jonathan are SO nice. The salon was clean, while "trendy"looking, very fresh and fun, without being overpowering. They have cute mugs and offer tea and coffee. Patrick was fantastic, I wasn't sure what I wanted exactly, but he made magic happen. I got the olaplex treatment, that I had done previously while out of state and it seriously brought health back into my super damaged hair. All in all, a seriously awesome salon experience. read more

Feel like you're in a rut with your hair? GO SEE PATRICK! He has made me love my natural hair because he works with it instead of trying to make it something it's not. There is a solution for your hair troubles and he has it. I used to get my hair cut once a year but after seeing Patrick once I have consistently been going back every few months. It's worth it! I tried to take some time to cool off after my hair cut but after I had to go elsewhere to fix the weIrd choppy cut I was pressured into I still just cant get over how jarring this experience really was. Brit was rude, inexperienced, and outwardly aggressive on an "edgy" haircut I didn't want. I should have taken pictures before I got my hair fixed but I just hated it so much. Brit discussed their pronouns, which on its own isn't bad, albeit uncomfortable, but they were disgruntled when I "assumed someone's gender" in the salon. Brit's negative attitude and subpar styling ability will keep me from returning to an otherwise welcoming salon with really cute decor and pleasant atmosphere. read more

I went to Clementine twice, the first time was a great experience but the second one was terrible. I went in to have Patrick dye my hair blonde and I left with streaky looking hair. The worst part is that when I left the salon, my friend told me the whole back/bottom section of my hair was left dark brown! I went back and told him I wasn't happy having my hair two different colors when I paid to have it dyed completely blonde. He responded that it looked good to him so he wouldn't change it. I'm way obsessed with Clementine. I've been seeing Patrick for almost two years now, since they opened, and he's fantastic. I'm constantly trying to go back and forth between a pixie cut and longer hair, and regardless of what is happening- a major chop, or just a trim and tune up- he is super focused, patient, and his cuts are flawless- I've never had a haircut that grows out as well as his. His color is fab as well. I've very slowly started experimenting with touches of fun color(purple, pink, etc), and he's extremely patiently eased me in. Everyone there is just awesome and nice, and despite the fact that I am not at all hip, I leave feeling much cooler every time. read more

I have curly hair and am pretty particular about how it looks, so I do a lot of due diligence work before picking a salon. I just moved to the area, and decided to try Clementine today. Francesca was so good with my hair, and was friendly and warm, which makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. The salon's products smell super nice too. I had a fantastic experience, love my haircut (and the blowout I got with it), and could not recommend this place (and Francesca! check out her band on local radio!) more. read more
