My mom and I booked appointments here before my brother's wedding. I will say I'd read a lot of negative reviews and was worried about what would happen during our services. I live in Los Angeles but was in town just for the wedding, and I've gotten blowouts at multiple Drybars around the country, so I knew what the service was supposed to entail. Well, I don't know why this shop has received so many bad reviews, because our services were INCREDIBLE. My stylist (Emily) and my mom's stylist (Giselle) both made our hair look absolutely gorgeous. I got the Manhattan and my mom got the Straight Up, and both were executed to perfection. Our stylists were fun and personable, super kind, and very talented. They put us at ease and we had the best time chatting while they did our hair. I have A LOT of hair and it can take over an hour to blow it out and flat iron it. Emily got it done flawlessly in 50 minutes! I also noticed GORGEOUS curls she'd done for the girl before me, so it wasn't just me who got great hair that day. My one note would be to ask how I wanted my hair washed at the shampoo bowl. This was actually the only time I've been to a Drybar where I wasn't asked if I wanted one or two shampoos and if I wanted conditioner on my roots. But since Emily made my hair look so amazing anyway, it's not a big deal -- just something I think should be done before washing. Overall we were both thrilled with our blowouts and the service provided by Emily, Giselle, and the receptionist up front. We couldn't have asked for anything more! read more

Completely inaccessible for those with mobility disabilities or needs: * Door opens outwards into alcove, partially blocking way in. * 10 steep stairs from lobby down to washing stations. * 7 steep steps up to blow out area. * Bathroom is down in washing area (whether it is accessible kinda moot at that point). Not a good choice for wheelchair users, or others with mobility disabilities. Recently had a blown out with Jocelyn. Had a 9:30 appointment and was taken right away. She was not very personable and never introduced herself, I just read her name off the slip from the front desk. Having been to Drybar before, this was surprising. Blowout was well done but the major issue I had was I requested a French braid after. First time she did it it was so loose I made her do it again. Second time she did a double French braid which was tighter yet messy looking. I was going to a baby shower and was on a time crunch so just kept it and pinned my hair with Bobby pins in the car. If you are going to advertise that you braid, make sure your staff actually knows how to do it. Salon was otherwise clean and well kept but will reconsider going there in the future. There are also lots of steps as the salon is 3 levels so if you are dealing with any sort of leg injury or are mobility impaired, keep this in mind. read more

I was seen late, my stylist was rude and I paid for a style I didn't get because in an hour and a half, I didn't even get to a styling tool - only washing and drying. I do have extensions, but I've had many blowouts in the 5 years I've had them take an hour with everything and look great. Worst Drybar experience I have ever had. Do not go to this location. Save your money, I wish I did. I also tried to tell the front desk person when I left, but she was arguing with me too that extensions take long and I had to be an event and take off since it took so long. read more

Should have listened to reviews. Antonia called me at 11:20am when I have a 12:15 appt. She told me to come in at 1:30 for this appointment. This is my rehearsal dinner hair which I noted when booking, so I cannot come in at 1:30. She then told me they're running behind schedule so I can try to come for 12:15 but I'd have to wait and she doesn't know how long I'd have to wait. I wish I could give more stars for this location of Drybar. I really only gave three stars because of my stylist named Davi. He was wonderful! made my hair look very pretty and took all precautions while cleaning brushes and flat iron off. I am allergic to some of the products so he wanted to make sure to use brushes that were clean. He also took his time washing my hair and always asked if the temp of water was ok. My appointment was originally at 2:45pm but, It definitely was a 20+ min wait to actually be seen. I booked a 9am blowout on a Sunday for my daughter's baby shower. At 9:15 I checked with the young woman at the front desk; she barely looked up from her phone and said "waiting for your stylist to get here." At 9:25am the stylist had still not shown up and I said "please cancel my appt, I have to be somewhere," and she again barely acknowledged me, no apology, nothing, and I walked out. I brought a guest with me to this dry bar as her first drybar experience and it was by far the worst I've ever had. I was actually embarrassed to bring my guest. My girl was nice and gentle and brought me down to my wash right away, she was very gentle and I have no complaints about the wash. My guest however was not even greeted but instead "hollered at" from across the room 10 minutes later, brought down to the wash and her girl was extremely rough w her hair pulling it aggressively and blasting her with hot water then ice cold water. The stylists washing (3 of them) talked loudly to eachother gossiping while the guests were unable to relax or speak to eachother. My guests finishing the wash stylist put her in an EXTREMELY TIGHT top knot that actually hurt, then instead of being walked to her chair (2 floors up) she ws barked at by the stylist to "JUST GO UP" and find her way on her own. When her stylist finally showed up, she FORGOT an hair dryer (??) and continuously knocked products over. Overall, my girl was very kind and gentle and did an OK job but it was more of a cosmo than a mai tai. I left a bit frizzy despite a lot of hairspray, so it was impossible to brush through without ripping my hair apart that evening and even worse the next day. She really just needs to work on using the right products for frizz instead of dosing with a lot of hairspray. My guests hair came out comically curly, she likened it to Shirley temple, with flyaways all over the place. She was so embarrassed by the hair that she immediately went home and got it wet to restyle for the evening. I felt horrible that I brought her to the salon to spend an hour plus only to get her hair pulled out with a style that looked really bad. When her blow dry was complete she said there was so much hair of hers on the ground it was appalling. Regarding the cleanliness- this location is FILTHY. My guests seat - multiple lightbulbs were broken above it, the lightbulbs that were on were two different colors, the cable holding the mirror to the table was broken, the drawer in front of her was ripped off and broken, there was sticky stuff all over the place, the hairdryer chandelier hanging above the sitting area was COATED in dust. We were not offered water, drinks, magazines, nothing. The mirrors were placed so high we couldn't even see ourselves while sitting down and didn't even have a TV to watch. Overall, my stylists was okay / decent, very nice but the outcome was not the best. My guests stylist was horrible and extremely cranky, horrible bedside manner and honestly needs to reassess her qualifications and ability to work with guests. I normally would never leave a review of this extent but I feel still so embarrassed by this experience I am considering whether I should continue my barfly membership. Other locations (Providence, RI and jupiter FL) have been amazing. But this Boston Backbay location is disgusting and needs to seriously reconsider calling themselves a drybar as nothing about this experience reflects what I have expected from a proper drybar. I'd never been to a DryBar before, but after hearing such amazing things, I thought I'd treat myself while visiting Boston. I chose the Newbury location for its proximity to shopping and my hotel. Having lived in Boston for many years, I figured this location would be a great experience. I wanted so much for this to be great. The staff were kind, helpful, and friendly! This is NOT about them at all. 1. The location itself is great, but the studio is a hot mess. They have what appears to be a selfie wall and it was coated in dust. The seating area itself was fine, just a bench in a bay window, but it had several cups people left, which wasn't a cute look. The basement where they wash your hair is uncomfortable, dingy, and dark. It felt like I was about to have my hair washed in a frat basement. Then we went to the top floor for the service. Tools and cords were all over, and magazines were scattered around. Again, fine on its own, but all together, it was just too much. 2. At my appointment booking, I asked for two add-ons: the 10-minute scalp massage and a braid. To be clear, I did not pay for these. I just assumed they'd happen without me talking about them. Then the wash was over, and the add-on massage didn't happen. Fine, whatever. Then we went upstairs to style. Again, the counters were kind of beaten up; older stickers were on them telling you to leave a five-star review (I wish I could). I have only a moderate level of confidence that the brushes and hot tools were clean. Things came out of a drawer, but there was only one of each. It's not like there were more than one of each item. I didn't see barbicide/disinfecting agents ... anywhere. Just a bin in the basement that said "dirty." It was full, so that was a good sign. 3. My hair! I have frizzy hair with different curl patterns, a mix of 2c and 3a. We went through the book quickly, and I picked out the Cosmo-Tai. We left the curls intact (didn't rake them out) to keep them longer. Within 3 hours my hair looked straight with limp waves. It didn't last through dinner. I mean, it smells great and is shiny! It looked very pretty for a very short bit. There was never any mention of the braid (again -- didn't pay for it). I think that's it! read more

I specifically booked and confirmed with her twice, yet when I arrived she refused to take me, even after the front desk confirmed I was her client. No explanation, just blatant unprofessionalism. Annabelle did such an amazing job styling my hair. The blowout lasted over four days and looked very similar to the picture I showed her. My friends said my hair reminded them of Ariana Grande, so that was a nice compliment. The reason I did not give Drybar 5/5 is because the receptionists weren't all that friendly. Also, when I called on the phone the receptionist seemed unaware of certain promotions or prices on the phone. Maybe she was new or honestly didn't know the answer to my questions. It just made the service seem a bit unprofessional. As a customer service personnel, I appreciate when people are confident in their responses. Even if you are unsure about the answer to a question just say, "I am not sure, but let me ask someone who might know the answer to your question." I've been going to Drybar for over a year now, I have a subscription and was going quite often, I appreciated how reliable the service was. However, I had a terrible experience there a few weeks ago and I'm planning on canceling my membership and never going back because of how uncomfortable it made me feel. I had the following conversation with the woman working the front desk: Me: "I get my hair done here all the time, I really don't have that much hair. It always takes exactly an hour like everyone else." Her: "Well no, you really do have a lot of hair and it takes longer." Me: "I promise, even though it's curly, it's not mean and very easy to brush out." Her: "No, I've done your hair before and it's definitely mean." Me: "No, it's really not bad. It's always fine with timing." Her: "I wouldn't say you or anyone has bad hair, you just have unhealthy hair that you don't take care of properly." This whole interaction left me feeling deeply hurt and insulted. Being told that my hair is "unhealthy", "mean", and that I don't take care of it properly is not only untrue, but incredibly rude. I take great care of my hair, and previous visits had always gone smoothly. It's disappointing that a place I once loved and frequented now makes me feel unwelcome and judged. Customer service and professionalism seem to have taken a nosedive at this location. No one should leave a salon feeling worse about themselves than when they walked in. read more

Very upset. I had an appointment this evening. On my way I was in an accident. I've been coming to this location for years. They didn't try to contact me. Just immediately charged my credit card $59. I understand the no show rule but my gosh - you're going to lose a faithful client over one missed appointment. I was very specific with my stylist about what I wanted when we came in at 7am this morning. I have had "only okay" experiences at dry bar before, but mainly positive ones. Hate to write this review as my stylist was so warm and nice, but she did not do anything I had asked for. I asked for a mai tai, with volume. She tried to capture the volume on top, but did some loose waves and some tighter ones very quickly towards the end. Did not allow the curl to set or to spray. The loose waves fell out within the hour. Additionally, there were entire sections of my "under" hair that laid completely--she did not style these at all. Unfortunately I was well over an hour and had to leave for my other appointments. I'm usually not one to complain and understand if what I ask comes off a little "off" but this was poorly executed and ended up looking quite frankly, ugly and unkempt, for a day of bridal fittings and a Halloween party later. I love Drybar but don't go to this location. The front desk has an attitude. They don't respect appointment times. If the people before you are late, tough luck, you have to wait for them to finish late before you get in. And the stylists don't like their jobs. They were badmouthing management to each other as if you are not even there. I can't say I'd recommend Dry Bar. When I made my appointment, I specified that I wanted just a styling, not a wash. I washed my hair the night before as instructed so that it was clean. When I got there, my stylist brought me down to the washroom and immediately started washing my hair. I should say- I should have spoken up, but it was my first time at a dry bar and I wasn't sure if they did a dry consultation over the sink or...what. So I didn't say anything. Once she started washing my hair obviously I felt that we were too far gone to say anything. My stylist was very nice, I have no complaints on that end. They worked really hard on my hair and spent a lot of time on it. That being said, the style did drop considerably within two hours. And I'm not entirely sure they used heat protectant on my hair, which I didn't love, given how much heat they were using. I had also never been to a salon before where I questioned the cleanliness of the brushes they were using on my hair, but I definitely did here. They just sort of rub the brushes together at the end of one appointment and then use them again with the next client. Anyways, when my styling was done I went to the front desk and she said "your appointment says dry styling but obviously you got a wash so I've charged you for that as well". My stylist had done a lot of work, I wasn't about to try to underpay, but I did feel a bit like I was tricked into more services than I had wanted. If the front desk knew I wanted a dry style, why didn't she say that to my stylist? All in all, I wouldn't go back. read more

My stylist had no idea how to style my curtain bangs. They looked better before she touched them, and then she unsuccessfully tried to "fix" them for 20-30 min, even after--not wanting her to keep flat ironing and spraying them--I told her I was fine leaving with it as was. I eventually told her how I styled them (I am not a professional) and she couldn't even replicate that well. Not only did she ruin my hair, she also wasted my time (and hers). I had high expectations because friends recommended the Dry Bar. The staff was very friendly, but the service quality fell short. The stylist didn't properly dry the roots of my hair, so it ended up frizzy, and the small braid I asked for unraveled less than 30 minutes after I arrived. I usually go to other locations around Boston, but DryBar sent out an email saying that they were doing free blowouts at the BackBay location for 12/2/19 for appointments made online/on the app. Twist my arm, I'll be there! This obviously meant that the appointments booked up quickly and the location would be super busy. However, like clockwork for Boston winters, a snowstorm started on 12/2. The location was still pretty busy but I got there early for my 6pm appointment and they started my shampoo at 5:30! I can't remember my stylist's name unfortunately but she was great. She asked a lot of questions about my preferences for my hair. She didn't use a TON of products like others have done in the past, which can leave my hair feeling super crunchy. Loved my blowout - always love the Cosmo-Tai. Also, the snow was really coming down at the end of my appointment so the front desk receptionist gave me a complementary umbrella so I could make it to the T without ruining my hair! read more
