I love Salon Forty Four! I can not say enough great things about this place. I walk in and immediately feel like I'm surrounded by friends! The stylists here are so welcoming. There is nothing uppity, pretentious or snobby about it. I've been going here for a bit over a year now after going to just about every salon on Newbury. I'm really really particular about the color of my hair. Being blonde I am super paranoid about adding any "warmth" to my hair. I consistently feel like it turns it orange and I am all set with walking around looking like Carrot Top. Loredonna has taken the time to learn my preferences. She knows my hair better than I do and that is so valuable. Her cut and color jobs are dead on. Most recently I went in for extensions. We did a little under 4 packs in my head based on the natural structure (basically thin and sparse at best!) of it. She did such an amazing job! I could not be happier. It blends PERFECTLY, color and cut. You cant even tell I have extensions in, it looks so natural and the amount of compliments I have received is off the charts. I would 100% recommend this salon and Loredonna for anything your looking to do. It's a fun upbeat place, with amazing women and of course Louis the salon mascot is a blast. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I most definitely would. I came to Salon 44 for an updo with Allison and as soon as I walked into the door I didn't feel welcomed at all. There was not even a simple "hello, how are you?" Allison was running a few minutes late with seating me in the chair, which I didn't mind, but when I finally sat down she asked me what we were doing today and I responded with an updo, and she said "an updo? I don't even really do those anymore why would they book me for an updo." So I'm like???? She starts curling my hair and then I ask if she needed to put heat protectant spray in my hair and she responded with a smart remark: "well how am I supposed to curl your hair if it's wet? People think I just twirl my fingers and it can turn into that"(referring to the pictures I showed her for ideas of an updo). She then proceeded to ask me how I found their salon for updos, and I was like "oh I just googled updos in Boston and yalls salon came up and had good reviews so I called and made an appointment." She was still acting confused as to why I came there for an updo so I proceeded to tell her that their website says they do updos as well. Mind you, her entire body language and facial expressions were obvious that she was not enjoying doing my hair. I finally asked her if she felt confident doing my hair and she got really upset by my question and started raising her voice and telling me that "updos are outdated and no one does them anymore." Long story short, I ended up leaving without getting my hair finished by her because she was being extremely rude. I've never experienced this kind of treatment before at a place that is doing me a service. I do NOT recommend this place, save your money and time read more

The customer service at Salon44 is horrendous. I disputed a charge to my credit card with them after being unable to show up for an appointment - I never confirmed the appointment, yet was charged a no-show fee without any warning. When I called to discuss, multiple employees including the owner were rude, dismissive, and told me that I was "wrong" and lacked "common sense". One person even hung up on me. I will not be returning and would advise current customers to take their business elsewhere. read more

Alison and her staff have been doing a great job with my haircuts for a few years now. I used to go to a few places on Newbury who also did a good job, but were hard to get an appointment and were very expensive. At $20 for a great men's haircut - it has to be the deal of the city. Any guy who lives in Charlestown should at least give them a try. They are also very good about staying late if you really need to get squeezed in and understanding if you are running late. They also have a small spa attached for more of the girly things, nails etc. read more

I have never been disappointed by this salon. Yesterday I went in after growing my very dark brown hair out for a few years and I told Alex that I wanted to go blonde again. She did an AMAZING job and i'm so so happy with how it turned out. She also put a lot of consideration into how my roots would grow in and made sure they wouldn't look crazy. I super appreciate how hard she worked because I have very thick hair that takes forever to color. This salon overall just has great people always, and I love the dogs! read more

First off, I should say that this Salon does a great job with my color. The place is very neat inside, and has a great vibe (with current tabloids always available). Also, there's Louis, the fabulous bulldog, whose presence is always appreciated. Lastly, they move as quickly as possible to finish your hair, and I have ALOT of hair. My only critique would be that the woman who does my hair has gotten bleach on my pants twice now, and both times sprays them with water, but offers no discount. I normally wouldn't care, but when I'm wearing now-ruined $200 jeans, it's frustrating. read more

I love this place!!! I've been coming to Salon 44 since 2005 and I've never had a bad experience. Alison and her staff are welcoming and very attentive. The best part about the Salon is that I never have to worry about getting a bad cut, color or wax because they girls are ALWAYS spot on. I've recommended many of my friends (both guys and girls) to the Salon and they have ALL had positive experiences. In fact a few of them live 30-40 minutes outside of Charlestown and they still come back in for a cut and color. The prices are very reasonable and the hours are accommodating to late work schedules. I went to Salon 44 for a manicure and it was AWFUL. The nail polish was old so it kept clumping. I had to ask her to re-do since it looked like a 5-year old gave me a manicure. Still awful plus it took forever and I ended up just taking off the polish as soon as I got home. My boyfriend also went to get a haircut and ended up with a modified bowl cut. i was searching places for a new stylist all week and finally decided on salon forty four. I was nervous I've had some bad cuts and I'm also in the industry so i can be kind of picky i had Brittany she was awesome I'm very happy with my cut it was a long layer wash cut and blow dry and the blow dry was amazing i would def come just for that if i had somewhere nice to go. prices were very reasonable 50$. the owner was also there and i saw a foil and blow dry she just finished and it was very nice! she was also really nice and seemed passionate about her business i would recommend it! read more

I'm very particular about my hair and get it cut/highlighted/straightened often.Ive been going to Lucy for over 10 years but she only works on Thursdays which makes it hard for those of us who don't have a flexible work schedule but she's always done an amazing job with my hair! I came here a couple months ago for a highlight and cut. I wanted my hair done on impulse and was able to make a same day appointment....I was pretty happy about that. I liked that the place was laid back and I felt comfortable there. My hair takes forever because it is so long but everyone was really nice. The price was very reasonable for a full highlight and cut, I was surprised. I see a lot of negative reviews, but I was pleased with everything and would come back again for highlights and another cut. read more

I got my hair cut here for a couple years while living in Charlestown. I have long hair with some long layers and Alison got the cut right everytime. I like the no frills and down to earth atsmoshere. I got partial foils here a couple times, saw roots earlier than when at other places, but color was right. Just natural highlights. read more

I have had amazing experiences at Salon Forty Four. Allison does an fantastic job with my unruly, very curly hair. She does a great job with the color and I think it's wonderful that this is a business owned by a young-woman who puts her heart and soul into everything. The place has a cool vibe. A few specifics to call out: -They are very accommodating with their hours/schedule. I work full-time and have 2 little kids and haven't had a problem getting the appointments I've needed -When I was pregnant I wanted to cut my hair short and Allison said she wouldn't do it because I'd regret it. She was right! -My son had his first haircut there. So cute. -I've gotten coupons in the mail for 20% off during the 2 months around my birthday. Nice! read more

Bad service!! I'm not one to post negative reviews but I just had to share my experience here. Months back, I scheduled an appt with a stylist a week in advance. I arrived on-time and was soon led to the sinks to get my hair washed. The person washing my hair then asked me to comb my own hair (she handed me a comb and a bottle of detangler) and walked off. If that wasn't enough, after the cut, the stylist told me she didn't have time to dry my hair. There was no "line" and they didn't seem to be too busy. Just lazy. I tend to have pretty difficult to manage hair, so a stylist has to be on top of her game to handle it. I have frizzy, coarse hair and a lot of it. I had been contemplating trying the Brazilian Blow-out and when I heard that Salon 44 was offering $100 off for the month of June I snatched up an appointment. I entered the calming, well decorated atmosphere and was immediately greeted by the salon owner's english bulldog. I love businesses that do that. The decor is beautiful, with the waiting area full of pillows and fun purple paint. My stylist, Ariana was great. As this was my first blow out I pestered her with questions that verged on obnoxious, but she took it in stride, answering all of my questions as well as supplying me with additional tips. Considering this is a specialized service, it was very important to me that I understood all the ins and outs of what I was getting myself into, and she provided that. The process was supposed to take 90 minutes but because I have so much hair I ran into another client's time slot. Luckily, Salon 44 is prepared for these circumstances. They have an employee on staff who just does the shampooing when they get busy. This allowed Ariana to seamlessly assist both myself and her next customer without a wait time. The scalp massage wasn't bad either. The blow out turned out great and the two hours flew by thanks to Ariana. Too many times I have either sat in silence with a stylist or listened to them complain about their job. Ariana was both professional and engaging and I will definitely use her services again. read more

I actually had one of the best, if not THE best experience having may hair cut and colored here today. I have blonde hair that grows extremely fast, and foils never seem to last long or come out how I like, and foiling can get very expensive to maintain. I explained this to Alison, we discussed and I made an appointment for the next day. I had a sylist named Helen Evans, ans she was FANTASTIC. Not only was my hair done with a quick single process and evened out, a few quick highlights and my hair is the exact color and cut I hoped for. And everyone was so nice! I have been seeing Brittney for years now, and can't see myself seeing anyone else. The girl does an AMAZING blow-dry!! I have super thick, wavy hair, which is hard to manage, but Brittney is able to straighten my hair and leave it voluminous and bouncy! My boyfriend also sees Brittney and he is hooked as well! I also love seeing Allison's bulldog at the salon! He is so cute and gives the salon charm and personality! Salon Fourty Four, is beautiful decorated, always spotless, and has the most attentive and kind staff, it is hands down the best in the area!
