I came here to see a particular stylist who had moved around from other salons. I want to give his name but I do not want to get him in trouble. He does very good work, is always pleasant and professional. I had a relaxer that went great, fast, no waiting, but when I went to pay he requested cash! There are at least 3 or 5 credit card machines there! I realize some stylists arrange for cash, as credit cards cost money for businesses but I had been leaving the neighborhood so I can have the convenience of using a card when needed. (I liked the Douglas Institute for Aveda but my hair doesn't remain as straight with them.) The older guy, in another language, told my stylist to ask me if I can get cash. They trusted me to go to a nearby ATM but my account was short and it was Sunday. I do not take cash advances off my cards and therefore I had no ATM codes. I finally came back and they used the machine. The stylist promised he would get FourSquare soon. (I left my jacket there in my rush to leave, and came back the next day. A nice guy was there and found it for me). I will weigh my options for some time before returning. read more

I do not typically wear my curly hair blow-dried straight so I wanted it straighten the way Egyptians do. I went into the salon and I pointed to the man that my family member referred me to try. He wasn't available so they told me that this other lady would wash and blow dry my hair and he would style it. I had no idea who the woman was and I did not have a personal issue with her until she started on my head. She was a hair stylist and she was very angry that I asked for her co-worker instead of her. How did I know she was angry, she rolled her eyes as I sat in the chair. I was immediately afraid and confused. I thought to myself okay they aren't using chemicals so how bad could this go? Welp, too bad I didn't just leave! She took the paddle brush and aggressively brushed my hair hitting me in my head at least three times. The second time, I stopped and turned around and made eye contact with her like hey lady, what's up? She looked at me, paused, and smiled innocently without apologizing. She said, "I am just trying to get your hair blow-dried." I thought to myself, but yeah, you have to beat me over the head to do that? She looked angry, I mean like a rocket about to take off when she started to blow dry my hair. Several times, I said ouch, and she said sorry in a quiet voice. She was putting the hot blow drier too close to my scalp. Finally, I said look you can stop. I will wait on him to finish my hair because it seems like this isn't a good time for you to work on my hair. I get out of the chair and she has to scowl on her face like she's been robbed of her last dime. I wait with half-wet hair for the other guy to finish my hair. He tells me that she's a hairdresser and asked why I wanted to wait for him and then it clicked. She wanted to just earn the money for doing my hair, but because I asked for him she would probably only get paid for washing the hair like a shampoo girl or maybe she wasn't being paid at all for helping him out with me. Either way, the way she behaved was disgusting at best! My guess is that happens a lot to her because it's a salon run by middle-eastern men and they have a certain style of haircare that most customers want to try which is what gets them in the doorway. My advice to her is don't work in a salon where most of the customers patronize with the hopes of getting styled by a hair artist who knows middle eastern hair techniques. It does not speak to her ability to style hair if someone wants something different, but her personality speaks to why she's there instead of her own salon! Not only would I never try this salon again, because multiple people saw her hit me, and leave the dryer directly pointed to my scalp and did not say anything to her, I don't want to be somewhere that employees feel that angry. Whatever was going on in her life had nothing to do with me, and I hope she's since found her way. read more

The atmosphere of the shop is great! They don't use too much heat, yet when he straightens my hair, it stays in tact for the two weeks. PLEASE, DO NOT VISIT if you want to save your hair from damage! I don't remember who referred me or why I started going here. I regret the day I step foot in this place. The shampoo guys & stylist are not experienced with African American hair. They take clients from wet hair directly to the blow dryer, NOT GOOD for black hair care. They part your hair with a metal clip, I had to tell the shampoo guy twice to use a comb. He even skipped applying conditioning, on my hair, after the shampoo. I didn't realize it until the owner was close to finishing my blow dry. The owner is very skimpy with using his products. He blow dried my hair without applying any products. I'm use to some type of hair dressing (cream, leave in conditioner or a heat protector spray) on my hair to protect during blow drying. I have given them several chances too many. Now I'm left with BREAKAGE & SHEDDING hair daily. Hair is not apart of my profession, but most people know to detangle hair from the ends to the scalp, something they have yet to learn. I have been going to this salon for years to get my hair 'done', whether for date night, girls night or just because. All of the guys, from Mahdi to Q to my stylist, Sammy are hysterically funny and over time, I've built a rapport with them. Sammy has seen me through the awkward stages of hair growth, dry scalp, highlights, lowlights, and heat damage. He is always getting trained on new technology and if I wasn't allergic, I've had undergone the keratin treatment with him as well. Prices are always the same and Sammy always asks what you as a client want, and will steer you away from things that are unhealthy or damaging to your hair. He always reminds me to deep condition my hair and doesn't always recommend the expensive product either but the BEST product, which matters to me. I go here at least once every three weeks, sometimes more depending. I highly recommend it as the wait time is never long or awkward and if it is, the guys will keep you laughing so time does fly. read more

Popped in for a wash, deep condition and trim. I had an overall pleasant experience and i strongly recommend. I called the night before to set an appointment that i was a hour late to, but I still got attended to ASAP. There didn't seem to be a whole lot of people there, and they have about 5 staff members so there was enough help to go around. Everyone was prompt and professional. None of that starting your hair then leaving halfway to go eat or text like many other salons do which is great because you can get in and get out without wasting much time. Everyone there is so friendly, and so so sweet. So top notch customer service and good skills, not much else to ask for. read more

Worst experience ever. Brought my 9 year old daughter to get her hair done. They left bleach and color in her hair for 3 hours. She started complaining that her skin and eyes were burning. We asked repeatedly to have her hair rinsed and they kept taking the next client in line. I eventually took her home in a panic to wash her hair and rinse her eys. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE!!! Went in for a color job came out with a color MESS, even after an "extensive" hair color consultation. What ticked me off the most was that Sammy & the rest of the crew tried to make me out as crazy. Me--"my roots are orange". Sammy--"I don't see why you don't like"....REALLY?? It's not even the same color swatch as we agreed on. I had to walk over to a client on the chair to see if she saw the same thing I did. Apparently, I wasn't crazy!! It was only then that Sammy reluctantly offered a re-do. Yeah, right! You won't EVA catch me at this place again, not even for FREE! Came here because I flew in from NY for a wedding and was a part of the bridal shower. Got there early to find only one lady working and confused by my presence. I wanted a wash and set thinking it was similar to the ones in NY... Totally wrong. The wash itself was ok but they don't do roller set!! Or even know what that is! Like literally I tried to explain but they didn't understand what that was. Instead they put me under the dryer for 10 minutes n blew dry my hair with a hand dryer!!! The amount of heat damage n split ends that resulted I never get my hair blown with a hand dryer at a salon and yet here I was subjected to it. One of the other bridesmaid wanted an updo hairstyle but apparent they don't do updos. I thought that was weird. On top of that no form of products were used. No grease, oil or anything to protect my African American hair. I was surprised black women actually go there. To top it off it cost me $45. I've could've gotten the same thing WITH roller sets for $25 back home. The only good thing was the owner's son. He took his time straightening my hair with a flat iron. Nonetheless, I really wouldn't recommend coming here to get your hair done. read more

I went to Cleopatra II upon the recommendation of my sister. I walked in the staff was very friendly, and accomodating. I recieved a relaxer with haircut. The chemical service and the styling was done properly and fast. The salon has a good vibe, The stylist all speak English very well, if you take time to chat with them they are very fun and frendly. I enjoyed my service at Celopatra II and the stylist were great. The best part is I did not have to wait, I walked in and walked out with relaxer and hair cut in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Went to the place for a simple haircut with clippers for my short hair. Worst $30 I've ever spent. Overprices for the location. The salon itself was filthy, old, rundown, and has its floor covered in hair. The hairdresser had an incredibly hard time figuring out what lengths I wanted. I said the millimeters measurements that are written on every attachment. I left with an uneven haircut and completely covered in hair! I also didn't know that so many Male Egyptions were here working on Hair. They are just as good as others but I hear that the heat is so high that many womens hair begin to thin out. This salon is very dishonest. There are no posted prices for services. Each time I went the price changed and I was charged more for the same service. My rinse was never the same color. The language barrier is HORRIFIC!!!! They do not seem to understand any english especially when it comes to haircare. The only stylist that is worth anything is Madi. Most of my life (including my childhood) I remember going to the Hairdresser sitting, waiting, falling asleep, growing bitter, impatient and sometimes angered by the lack of concern for the waiting client. Former Hairdressers would have me and other waiting clients come in at that so-called appropriate hour. I recall many occasions when I distinctly asked while making the appointment, if this was the best time to come-in so to get out of the shop in a two hour frame? Always with the answer being something like; Absolutely and No Problem! When I found the Original Cleopatra's at 1316 E. 53rd St in Hyde Park, it was a God send. The Original Cleopatra's was suggested to me by a friend, after I complained about spending my entire Saturday morning and some of the afternoon in a Salon in the Chatham Area. Since finding Sammy, I have never turned back. Not only does the Original Cleopatra's specialize in styling the natural-hair of people of color, their prices were reasonably fair, they were very courteous and I favored their punctuality. Most of all they were able to tackle my 5 year olds head of hair which hung past her bottom. We, to this date have never spent more than 1-1/2 hours in the salon. This is with my Daughter with me. A single appointment (alone), I am out in under an hour. Sammy, Mattie and Que just to name a few have been more than terrific. All are mindful and never too preoccupied to deal with what your needs are. At times I may ask for something extra (i.e., a hot oil treatment, deep conditioning or color) Sammy and his staff charge accordingly. Not only do I receive compliments daily on the healthiness of my hair, the style, and the color. Often asked, "where do I get my hair styled?" I have no problem in telling a soul whom and where I get my full head of hair "hooked up!!!" I was shocked to see what NIQUE J. wrote. "Well NIQUE, I'm there every week Johnny on the spot and haven't shed a tear, let alone a hair that I am concerned about. Maybe it's something that you had done wrong that made your baldness occur prior to your visit?...Think about it! If you were more focused and less rude, you might have understood the accent of these Moroccan Men, who have done nothing more than make a life for themselves while enjoying making our African American woman look Fantabulous!!!! Me and my daughter visited this place about 3 years ago. I notice a lot of bad reviews about Sammy, he is a terrible hair stylist and he is all about the money. This shop doesn't support healthy hair. If you want to keep hair on your head, do not go to this shop. Way back in 2009, there was this other gentleman who did my hair in a holli berry cut, he did an awesome job, his name was abduah He was the best. Sammy needs to go back to school on customer satisfaction and customer service. Sammy botched up me and my daughter's hair. We had to cut all of our hair off and start all over. We are both now all natural and our hair is beautiful. Sammy may be the owner, but he is terrible and he doesn't know a thing about African American hair. I do not recommend this place. I went there for a simple hair cut (asked to cut off a few inches and add layers). The employee who cut my hair had been eating an orange prior to me coming in. He did not wash his hands and as such they were sticky. Throughout the hair cut he kept looking at his cell phone every time he received a text message. Additionally, he was aggressively pulling my hair while combing it (my hair is not frizzy or curly by any means). By the end of the hair cut I just wanted to leave and when I got home I noticed that the cut was completely uneven (the left side was longer than the right) and in the back he had forgotten to cut an entire section of hair. Overall, would not waste your money (definitely regret spending $25) and would recommend going to a different place with more professional service. read more

Horrible experience. I came in to get 2 Keratin treatments one for my daughter and one for myself. I was referred by a friend who called before I got there to confirm the price for me. He told her to come in and he would give me a deal for 2 people. Well I got there and there was no deal he charged me the highest price for bot $250. I said well I didnt expect to pay $500 dollars today. He then asked how much mu friend had told me I said no more than $200. He then said ok $400 for both. While waiting I called Yehia who quoted me a price of $150. At that point I went to put up the smock and get my things. He came over at that point and I told him why I was leaving and what Yehia had said. He then tried to convince me to stay saying that he was going to give me a good deal. I stayed. My friend came and we began to talk about the process and that this place was better because the next visit and shampoo was included in the price. Now comes the scam and just unprofessional dishonesty. She called him over to confirm and explain. He proceeded to say I would have to pay for the next visit and Shampoo. He said the price which brought my total back up to $500. I am disgusted he should have explained this upfront. Now I feel like I have been ripped off. Bottom line I should have gone to Yehia. Oh I forgot the part where he said Yehia has crappy products. Really? Why do all beauticians have to down each other. Oh I had to pay the meter 3 time while i was in there. Everyone kept taking breaks and I have been here 4 hrs now and still have a heat cap on my head....ughhhhhh..update i left after 6 hrs..my hair was blown dry half way in the alley because of the fumes and the beautician could answer my any real questions about the product.. I was cold and my bronchitis started acting up because of the fumes..
