I have a theory about the average male and his hair follicles. It's a zero-sum game that is being played. Beginning in his late twenties or early thirties as he begins to bald, the hairs on his head are NOT disappearing. Not at all! They are merely migrating to other places that you wish they wouldn't (e.g., your ears, nostrils and back). By the time he reaches my age, these wayward hairs can begin to demand a significant amount of his grooming time. This is where Cleopatra's Secret can play a helpful role. I looked at my back in the mirror the other day and vowed to return it to its silken smooth beach glory days from two decades ago (does this sound like a mid-life crisis?). Cleopatra's Secret had recently moved into my neighborhood from its previous location at Bunker Hill and the Katy Freeway (the old location falling victim to MetroNational's redevelopment plans around Memorial City Mall). I decided to give them a shot, called and made an appointment. Being a hair removal virgin, I was somewhat apprehensive about exactly what sort of pain I'd undergo and had vivid nightmares that approximated that memorable scene from The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Anticipating a dimly lit medieval torture chamber, I crafted this Limerick the morning of my appointment while lying in bed, dreading what I had put on my calendar: I asked her to sugar my back And cringed at the hair-tear attack. It seems diabolical That each friggin' follicle Was rampaged from shoulders to crack. Surprise! Surprise! My hairy back was deflowered in a most pleasant fashion. My appointment was with Ati, the owner. She is a delightfully vivacious woman who babied me through the whole experience. I put on my game face and exuded as much charm as I could muster when we met in the lobby. She looked me over and said, "So, baby...you're my next victim?" I couldn't help smiling. She took me to a private room where I doffed my shirt and lay down on what seemed to be a massage bed. We kept up a lively conversation as she spread a hot sugary mixture onto my back, applied a cloth to it and efficiently ripped away large swathes of hair. I admit - I winced, but it really wasn't bad at all. In between, she had a soft touch which was quite soothing. At one point I was actually getting drowsy as I lay there. The whole experience lasted about 45 minutes. The results - WOW! Talk about smooth. The last few days, I've marveled as I've rubbed my back in the shower. In an intimate moment, my lovely wife was quite appreciative too. In retrospect, I should have done this years ago! Ati informed me that I should come back in two months and that the next round will be much easier. I thought, "Super," because the first round wasn't bad to start with. All this being said, I have a new-found respect for you ladies (and guys) who submit to hair removal in the nether regions. Ati swears that your back is more sensitive than your privates, but I'm not buying it. I might just wince when a strip of hair gets ripped from its roots over my shoulder blade, but if a similar thing had occurred between my thighs, I suspect I would have emitted a bit more than a wail or whine. Still love cleopatra's. Ellen is still amazing. She makes you feel comfortable like you are talking to a friend. I do wish they would change was their policy regarding changing estheticians. One time I was in a bind and needed Ellen (my usual esthetician) but she was not available the one and only time I was free. I asked if I could get another person since I was certainly not flexible with time. They told me they did not allow that because it was considered stealing a customer from a specific esthetician. They didn't bend the rules. Pretty inconvenient for the customer. They are closed on Mondays and Sundays. Tuesday-Friday they close at 6pm. I wish they stayed open until 7pm to help people that get off from work make it in on time. That would be helpful. read more

I first learned about Sugaring a year ago when I was in Georgia and never have gone back to waxing ever since. When I moved back to Houston I knew I had to find a Sugaring place near my house. This was the only place I found nearby. So far I've had sugaring services from both owners, Cynthia and Ati, and they both are highly experienced and knowledgeable on sugaring. If it's your first time here, I highly recommend booking with either Cynthia or Ati, they will take care of you. My husband went here once to get his chest sugared and scheduled it at the last second with a newly hired sugarista. The sugarista didn't know how to properly treat his skin and he left with pimples all over his chest. That's why I recommend booking with one of the owners if it's your first time, because they will know how to handle your skin and what products to put on it. If you don't know what sugaring is... sugaring doesn't burn and remove your skin like waxing does. Sugaring is removing the hair follicle while waxing is just removing the top part of the hairs. Sugaring takes a longer time for hair to grow back. Sugar paste is sugar, water and lemon juice heated up. There are two different methods of sugaring. 1st method is applying the warm, liquid, sugar paste to the body with a popsicle stick and removing it with a sheet. That's what Cleo's Secret does. 2nd method is forming the paste into a solid mass in your hand, and applying it to the body and removing it with your hand. That's the method I experienced in Georgia. Both methods are great but the first is more hygienic. If you are thinking about trying sugaring, take the leap. You won't regret it! read more

I have been going to Cleopatra's Secret since they where at their old location on I-10. The first time I went to Ati, I had my doubts about sugering compared to waxing. Ati promised that it did not hurt nearly as much. to prove this theory, she covered my hand in the Sugar Mixture (that Ati created) and then proceeded to tear it away. To my amazement, my skin was not pulled. I am now all sugar....Ati and her team of Cynthia and Shannon are great. They make you feel like you are apart of their family. Shannon the receptionist (the glue of the business), can remember everything about you, your friends, and beyond. Ati and Cynthia are very professional and fun loving people. One thing you should know is that you have to be referred to Cleopatra's Secret by a friend. When you are referred, you will go to the sugarist that your friend goes to, Ati or Cynthia. I have only had Ati, who is terrific. She takes her time to make sure everything is PERFECT. When she sugars (Brazilian) you forget that you are bottomless. The sugaring takes about 15min and you are all done. It takes about 4 weeks until you need your next appointment. Body hair is such a pain to deal with. Seriously. But Ati (owner of Cleopatra's Secret - which sounds like something way dirtier than its depilatory reality) makes the entire 'ripping the hair follicle out of your skin' thing a million times more pleasant. She's got a great sense of humor, a relaxing and laidback manner and amazingly quick reflexes (necessary for clients that get a little jumpy when under extreme sugaring duress - I speak from experience). The rest of the staff are just incredibly friendly - the kind of people who are incredibly free with hugs, remember clients' names and really develop great relationships. A huge plus in my mind considering the rather delicate situations you find yourself in for there (grin). Cleopatra's Secret moved a few months back to a new location and it's great. Everything is clean and comfortable, albeit covered in Egyptian paraphernalia. One drawback is the pricing, but I suspect this has more to do with the fact that it is body sugaring vs. waxing. A bikini sugar will set you back about $85 - but holy gingersnaps is it worth it. A summer essential, particularly for those with a penchant for a little pain :) This is the kind of place that I feel comfortable recommending my mom and even my more conservative friends. Everything is very friendly, professional - one of those spots that despite the rather uncomfortable procedure (it is what it is...) AMAZING results! I have been only once but will definitely be a repeat customer. I was SOOOO nervous! I had never waxed or anything before, but everyone was so nice and understanding, it made the process so much easier. =) I can't say if its better than wax, as i said i have never waxed, but i was very surprised at how little it hurt. Now, dont get me wrong, you feel it! but the pain lasts for like 3 seconds, if that, then they moisturized that spot right away and it went away. Be weary! I got a staph infection at this place at their old location after a bikini wax. I was in terrible pain and it cost me $800 in medications alone not including the doctors bills to get rid of the infection. Worst of all my 6 year old also contracted the infection and it broke my heart to see her in this pain.
