I LOVE THIS PLACE! They have the best selection of reasonably-priced random things that I can think of. It's a good place to go to when you don't know what to get your friends (or little kid friends) for their birthdays. They had Hannah Montana and Finding Nemo lunch boxes. You can go to the store with five dollars and end up with something to keep you satisfied through the day. OH! And they sell waterglobes that you can decorate yourself! An outstanding neighborhood handymans shop. Staff are informed about hardware, tools and projects ; they are always courteous and mostly available. Their reasonable prices came as a pleasant surprise (having initially expected them to be pricier than Home depot and Lowes). I wont even bother going elsewhere for most home projects and parts. I needed two mirrors cut for a crafts project I'd been working on. The glass cutter, James, was fantastic! So encouraging of what I was doing ( he even took a picture of it...) and quite entertaining and amicable while I waited. Cliff's is amazing it is truly a gem. The staff is friendly and helpful something that we don't encounter enough these days. They stock all kinds of amazing things literally ranging from nuts and bolts to disco balls and everything in between. My partner and I love this store, and love to support local businesses...that is always one of our priorities. In order to support local businesses we understand that we may have to pay slightly more than we would at a big box retail...maybe even up to 25% more. We did some comparison shopping and discovered more often than not the prices at this store are 100%+ than other places. Last summer we purchased a red Hunter Douglas room fan...well made, constructed of metal, for $140.00. Stopped by Bed, Bath and Beyond...same fan for $70.00. Now that is extreme. I went back to the store to talk with them about this vast price difference, and in the middle of the conversation the guy walked away from me and told me that if I overpaid it was my problem. Having worked in retail for years, and for small stores, it is important that you earn the loyalty of your customers. You don't do that by charging twice what everyone else is charging. Another time we went there to get a board game; The Game of Life, priced at $35.00...at Target the same game was $11.99. I would have paid $15.00 to $20.00 for it, but NOT $35.00. I believe that they jack up the prices because most of "my gay family members" are idiots and will over pay for anything just to say they got it in the Castro... It's where I go when I want some wonderful obscure piece of old glassware, or electrical parts for a homemade lamp project. I've been shopping at Cliff's for more than 15 years. You can always depend on the employees to help you find what you need. The merchandise they carry is top quality and their prices are very competitive. Though I may shop elsewhere for things carried by Cliff's, it's strictly for periodic sales. Cliff's is not within walking distance of my house, however, its worth the trip. I was refinishing the original solid oak front door in my house and needed to find hardware parts for the mortice lock (very scarce). A helpful customer service clerk at Home Depot said "try Cliff's Variety in the Castro". Sceptically, I thought 'yea,sure'. Well, I have to eat my thoughts. I called first and they said " Yup, we gottem. Come on down" Ernie the elder was happy to help me and provided every piece of the assembly that I needed. I was amazed and delighted! Cliffs has it ALL! Well, not everything, but quite a variety! I love that this place is such a Castro institution, well-loved, and such a great store. The staff are always friendly, the prices are reasonable, and the selection is pretty fantastic. I love both parts; it's fun to just walk around and browse. That's what Cliff''s is for me. They have more of the things I need when I need them than any large box store I can think of. And as aside, for those with kids, the children's section has the best toy and craft selection in the city as far as I'm concerned. Although Cliff''s Variety doesn't have everything -- and don't expect TruValue or Home Depot -- they have a lot of very useful things. As Shakespeare said, "there's something in a name," and variety is what this place is all about. I buy my furnace filters here, recently I found air valve caps for my tires, light bulbs, flags, a yellow duckie with a shock of green-blue hair (an amazing find), the best-priced large umbrellas perfect for a rainy season, and mini fuzzy chickies for Easter. Next door they have fabric, furniture, wigs, lighting, tiaras, and a nice selection of feathers. Within the last year I bought at least two feathers here and a pair of Dame Edna Everidge eye-glasses. What more could you ask for? read more

Cliffs Variety was a pleasure to work with. I was looking for a toy tuba for my nephew for Xmas and I sent them an email asking if they knew where I could find one. Even though they were not able to find one, they tried very hard and gave me the common courtesy to send me an email back explaining the situation. The only company who did by the way. Cliff's has a FANTASTIC TOY SELECTION! I have a 4-year-old daughter, and one of her favorite things to do is to visit Cliff's to look at their toys. We've been to deluxe toy stores in the City, and to TrUs... The few aisles at Cliffs are small but have a great selection. Dolls, Fisher Price Little People, Manhattan Toys Groovy Girls, Melissa & Doug blocks, bath toys, dress-up costumes, stuffed animals and puppets,... and those are just the toys that my own 4-year-old happens to notice (she tends to beeline to the Groovy Girls). High-quality toys for babies, too. If you are looking for a child's gift of high quality and reasonable price (many $20 or less), this is a perfect place to go. I stop in here everytime I'm in the hood, even if I don't need anything. It has literally everything. The best selection of duct tape in the city! Ha! The best selection of incandescent light bulbs too. For what you get to the pricing is very reasonable. The best part..... their staff is friendly and not pretentious! Looking for something unusual, out of the ordinary. This is the place to go. If they don't have it, they will find it. Just walking through the store is an adventure. Staff is the friendliest anywhere. Plus if you need some lumber cut to specific measurements, they will do that also. This isn't the place I go when I need esoteric stainless steel metric parts for my underwater projects, but it is a great neighborhood hardware store. They've even helped me build custom brackets by doing some drilling and sawing for me, only charging $5 for my strange requests. It's great to have such a decent selection of hardware goodies a few blocks down the road. read more

Yes, "as good as it gets." Great selection. Great staff. Find the right staffer and they will really know their stuff and their stock. Don't find the "right" staffer, they will get the right staffer for you. Only drawback is the parking. You can look at their address and guess that one though. Makes it a bit difficult to get larger items to a car. Store can be very crowded at times which makes it difficult to step back and see things in the narrow aisles. Used to think this was a great place to shop, but not into the sleazy way they interpret the San Francisco .10 bag ordinance. They won't give you a larger bag if you ask without tacking on an extra .25. Really? The bags you gave for free last year? Gouge much? Every other store in town is super customer friendly about this and tries to meet customer requests. Not Cliff's. read more

Some folks working there are genuinely helpful, but in general, this place is relegated to the "it costs more in gas to run down to a real hardware store for this one item than it does to walk down to Cliff's and pay an outrageous price for it" category. Have been shopping here for decades. Always get excellent help if I need it and the employees always friendly. I bought most of my 6 year old niece's Christmas gifts here this year. She especially liked her yodeling pickle. The wind up chattering teeth were also a hit as well as the travel size Spirograph. Mostly I've come for hardware items over the years. Cliff's is closer than the big box places and would rather support the neighborhood store anyway. read more

Its an okay store but I really don't think it is that great. It's lovely that it's a local business but I really don't care about that. The variety the store offers can be found elsewhere for lower prices. They do have a lot of employees none of which seem to be anything more than cashiers. I have occasionally seen employees in the paint department but none have ever talked to me. The window displays are appealing and are unique that is one thing that is for certain. I also really dislike that this business allows homeless people to camp out in front of the store or other street performers to gather there. read more
