A great place for gifts, love the candle selection & the staff is always friendly & helpful

Recently in 2025 the Glen Park neighborhood in San Francisco was named the #35 Best Neighborhoods in the World by Time Out ( timeout.com). I can vouch for how fantastic Glen Park is an unique place where I enjoy going here since it's nearby to where I live and has lots of places to enjoy a bit of everything from a place eat and drink. For decades I always enjoyed hanging around Glen Park because it has a good vibe and a model of an ideal residential neighborhood in San Francisco. I am in this neighborhood all the time. It is also a good place to enjoy a place to hike in the Glen Canyon Park. There is a place in the Glen Park neighborhood where they sell lots of fun stuff from books to celebratory cards along with art and it's also a gift shop. On a November autumn stroll through Chenery street in San Francisco Glen Park neighborhood I enjoy going to Perch because it has lots of interesting items available along with some art on the walls. It feels as you stepped inside a small art gallery which sells jewelry, stationaries, special occasion cards, kitchen items, and some good books about drinks and food. When visiting the Glen Park neighborhood in San Francisco plan a visit and stop at Perch on Chenery street. I have been a loyal customer at Perch for more than five years. As a Glen Park resident, it's a great place to stop for gifts or to treat yourself. Unfortunately, I will never go back after an interaction that I had with the woman who works there today. She has never been particularly polite (she's snapped at both me and my husband), but we were willing to overlook that to support a local business. That changed today. I approached the store with my newborn in her stroller. The woman had her large, nine month old puppy tied to the front door of the store. Since the dog could easily jump on my stroller (it was quite large), I asked if it was baby friendly. I said, "I have a newborn in here, is your dog safe with babies?" And she snapped rudely, "I don't know. That's your responsibility." Mind you, we were literally on our first walk out of the house and had prioritized going to perch to get a little gift for our baby girl. This interaction was so totally unnecessary. Not only should a giant puppy not be tied to the front door, but to snap at parents trying to keep their kid safe is totally inappropriate. Move your dog! Be kind! Ugh I am so done. I will never be back. PS, I should clarify that I love dogs and I am a large dog owner myself. It is our responsibility as dog owners to 1) know how our dogs behave with kids and other dogs and 2) depending on that behavior, take precautions. This woman chose to do neither and was rude to us when we asked her to. read more

For years, this has been my go to shop for little gifts for kids, housewarming, cards, whatever. While there are plenty of options for the cook/child/self-care aficionado/etc. in your life, it's curated, and that makes it less overwhelming. Recently, I was getting a holiday present and there was only one of the item left in stock. But, I was about to hop on the BART and couldn't carry it with me. I came to rely on Perch when I lived nearby for last minute gifts & cards, and even after moving across town I still make it a point to come back here. The store is divided into 5 major sections - childrens (unique toys, plushies, onesies), stationery (cards, notebooks, pens), cooking/home (cookbooks, serving dishes, unique spices, linens), beauty (candles, lotions), and jewelry. I always pick up cards here, as well as gifts for kids parties and hostess gifts. The curation is impeccable - the toys are so unique and sourced from all over the world. I've bought an expensive cashmere throw for one friend, inexpensive Japanese pens & stationery for another friend, and a moderately priced set of linen napkins for another friend. I had the best experience with Perch buying some necklaces over the phone. I live 70 miles away from the store so I called to order some gifts. Zoel could not have been lovelier! Stopped by the store today and saw that they carry some candles that my friend has been eyeing. Within seconds (literally less than a minute ) of stepping foot in the store and picking up the candle, the women behind the counter asked me if she could wrap that up for me (very passive aggressive). I said that I was browsing. She then turned to one customer who was outside the door(the store has capacity limit which I 100% understand and respect) and tells her that I will be leaving. Very odd and offputting to passive aggressively kick potential customers out? Business acumen aside, it's just poor manners. So strange. read more

I will never return to this store due to a bizarre interaction with a staff member today. I was ready to purchase several bracelets and a ring, along with gift cards and wrapping paper. If you're familiar with the store, these items are very high quality with a price to match. The woman at the register had been very friendly, so I was taken aback by her change in attitude when I asked if she was able to give a discount if I purchased multiple items. In my mind, there is no harm in asking, and if the answer is no, fine, I already wanted to buy anyway. She gave a long winded answer to say no, and ended by saying that she could give discounts at her discretion, but only if the customer did not ask for one. I apologized if my question came off as rude and at that point she started ranting at me and interrogating me about what other gift shops stay in business if they give discounts to every customer that asks. I still wanted to at least buy some of the items today for a birthday present, so I put some items back and planned to return another day to purchase from another salesperson. She snidely asked if I was low on money and if that was why I asked for a discount. I told her that I would not be purchasing anything and turned to leave. She asked me to leave the store and stepped out from behind the counter to chase me away. Completely unnecessary as I was already walking away, but she clearly wanted to physically intimidate me. My family has lived in this neighborhood for years and we've been to Perch countless times because we want to support our local neighborhood businesses. We buy something almost every time we stop in. This weekend my sister and I went to Perch to buy gifts for a kids birthday party. We were with our two young daughters in strollers. Despite us actively perusing and purchasing two items, Teanna (the manager who is often at the counter) made several passive aggressive comments to us that we should leave to make space for her "customers." At first I thought she was joking or being sarcastic, despite her hostile tone, because it was currently empty besides our family. During peak hours, there are at most 2-3 customers in this store ever. After realizing she was just harassing us, we had a confrontation with her where she continued to berate us about taking up space in her empty store. She followed us out the door in a threatening manner. She also made derogatory comments about us to another person who walked in after us. There is something seriously wrong with this woman to treat paying customers like this. It was so hostile for no reason that we had to wonder if there is some other motivation here. I will note that we are not white and I noticed at least 50% of the other negative reviews about this woman/store are the same ethnicity as us. I will never ever be back here and don't recommend anyone else to come here. To the owner, Zoel, who has been kind to us in the past: As I can see from other reviews, we're not the only customers who have been driven away by Teanna's passive aggressive and frankly bizarre behavior (see puppy dog voice review). I'm not a local. My wife and I went in this store and upon entry I let the woman know the cards in my hand were from another store so she knew I did not steal them. The woman proceeded to talk to me in a puppy dog voice and call me "good boy". I'm not sure what her thought process was. It was very demeaning. She has no right to talk to anyone in this manner let alone a potential customer. read more

Not too long ago, I came into this store looking to buy some simple stationary. Not only did Perch have a wide selection of stationary to accommodate various purchases and budgets, but the customer service and vibe are sincerely welcoming. I was holding the notebooks I was looking at close to my bag, and when the shop keeper saw this they put a pause on their conversation to let me know that I was welcome to put the stationary in my bag in order to see if it fits. As a BIPOC who is used to customer service that runs between "awful" to "they didn't follow me around...," it means a lot to receive this level of kindness and trust from a shopkeep. After checking out, I had a small conversation with the shopkeeper and their friend. Again, it was just such a kind and welcoming gesture to make towards a customer. So not only does Perch have a carefully selected assortment of goodies to enhance your life (I could buy regular old note books, but I like specialty ones that come from Japan or Europe) or gift to special people, the shopkeep I met promoted community with their integrity and kindness. I had a wonderful experience at Perch yesterday afternoon. I had recently been given an ornament and wanted to exchange it and the employee was exceeding kind in allowing me to do so. The shop has lots of beautiful items so it was actually difficult to figure out what I wanted instead. There are many lovely items and if you are looking for a gift, this is the place to frequent. The shop is very cute and has great quality gifts but the female associate there today was so rude, passive aggressive and patronizing. Everything about Perch (a gift store) is truly charming, from their shopping bags to their inventory and website (www.perchsf.com). It's definitely selected by someone with a sense of whimsy and good taste. The shelves are crammed with goodies; this is the grown up but not stuffy version of Wishbone. Prices aren't cheap but not ridiculously expensive either. I take my greeting cards very seriously and they have an excellent selection, including many letterpress cards. For pen & paper types, Perch carries a wide selection of journals and giant animal erasers. The office section has wallets, picture frames, cute mugs, and tote bags. Towards the back, you'll find cookbooks, drinking glasses, and fun (robots) and pretty things for your table. The candles smell amazing but are expensive (they look expensive too, with fancy boxes). The jewelry covers a range of styles including delicate, organic looking feminine silver jewelry with leaves and branches. I fell in love with a silver bracelet with teeny skulls ($60) which came with a signature Perch pouch. They had a matching necklace (sold out) and stud earrings. They also have a charming baby/children's section, including tee-shirts with felt cupcakes that you can snap on or snap off. I was even charmed by their collection of Christmas ornaments including wooden acorns, porcelain acorns, laser cut wood snowflakes, and even vintage glass ornaments ($2 each). Perch is a nice little Glen Park neighbourhood gift shop that has plenty to Tweet about! Perch reminds me of Re4m in Oakland's Montclair District in that the goods are attractive, stylishly displayed, and moderately priced. I also enjoyed the calm friendliness of the proprietor, welcoming service, and the relaxed pet-friendly vibe. Unfortunately for Perch's business relationship with me and Gayle, we really do have too much stuff. Perch is a quaint neighborhood boutique gift shop that is brimming with unique trinkets, jewelry, home decor, and cards/stationary. Although some items can be a bit pricey, the quality of the items and wonderful customer service have been enough to make me a repeat customer. While handwritten cards are a dying art, I'm still a major advocate for them and can never quite stop myself from picking up a few to add to my little arsenal. Perch carries both Paper Chase and Dear Hancock cards, which I'm a big fan of. Dear Hancock is mainly known for their cards that feature an adorable bunny dressed up in a variety of themed costumes, one that is bound to fit whatever occasion you're searching for! What struck me about Perch during my first visit was their friendly customer service. I was immediately greeted by a gentleman who asked if I needed help finding anything. He was warm and personable and asked me how my day was going, in a way that was genuine and not scripted. He engaged in conversation again when he rang up my items and thanked me for visiting. As plain as this interaction sounds, this rarely happens nowadays, and I really felt valued and appreciated as a person and customer. Even though I frequent Glen Park often, Perch is easy to miss down on Chenery Street, but they're worth a visit! Super cute stuff, really RUDE service! The woman behind the counter (owner I think) greeted me with thinly veiled courtesy and things went downhill from there. I mentioned a fun product that seemed like something that she might know of and was told that it sounded too common to grace her shelves (in summary). When asked if I could see inside of an item I was excited about, I was told okay as long as I didn't damage it because she would still have to pay for it with the artist...what!? When asked if she gift wrapped, she got super weird, put the things in the bag and crumpled tissue into the bag while commenting that it was a courtesy wrap...uhhh, thanks? Look lady - Im your customer (and typically one that spends a lot of money in stores like yours) and I'm sorry that you're not doing well financially or whatever is going on but for god sakes, if you don't like people, do something else with your time. read more

There I go again, keeping all of the good stores to myself (slaps own hand with other hand). Kristina R. and I were there the very day that Daily Candy wrote about it, which was a Monday, and unfortunately the one day they are not open. That did not deter us from pressing our noses up against the window and getting a sneak preview of everything inside. I think we may have alarmed the owner a little bit, who came out to tell us that they would be open the next day, keeping the door open juuuuust a crack, so there would be no chance of us getting in. He probably saw my crazy eyes darting over to the wall of letterpress cards and nice wrapping paper. Can't blame him for his ability to spot a retail psycho now, can we? I went back a few weeks later and just as I thought I would be, was delighted with the assortment. I found perfect, unique gifts for that uber-cool friend who has everything, a fab vintage milk glass necklace for myself, and the promise of many future purchases. The owner was so nice and chatty, and wrapped everything so beautifully, that I left with a huge smile on my face. If I'd have had a hat, I would have thrown it up in the air, Mary Tyler Moore style. So, what is it? It's one of those everything stores, where everything is just right. House stuff, cute stuff, jewelry stuff, paper stuff, baby stuff, stuff stuff - all selected with the great eye of the owners/buyers, and in a range of different prices. You just have to go there, and you will know right away if it's your store or not (it will be). If you like stores like Lavish, Doe, Candy Store, you should make a trip to Perch. The Glen Park location is a relief from all of the regular boutique-shop neighborhoods, and you can actually have elbow room to browse there, which I love. More browse, more buy. Okay folks...I have found a new store to spend hours in, either playing with knick knacks, smelling candles and lotions, looking at the cutesy, unique cards, falling in love with the jewelry and admiring the high-quality products in the children's section. Sucks that I am hardly ever in the Glen Park neighborhood, but maybe it'll be good for my wallet. The store is also lucky that I am a bit tight on cash right now. This morning, I'm at Higher Grounds, enjoying myself a cup of hot chocolate & what do I spy with my little eye across the street? Perch. I take my last sip & saunter into *angels singing* an oasis of all my favorite home thingys: candles, soaps, bath fizz, spoon holders, kitchen timers, greeting cards, wrapping paper, jewelry, etc. Packaging is everything to me. You could wrap fake (or real) dog poop in beautifully designed packaging & I would swear I had to have it. Perch has these soaps (prices range from $10-$21) that not only smell incredible (lemon verbena, anyone?!) but are encased in pretty paisley wrapping that makes it such a perfect gift. If anyone gave me anything here for my (*ahem* upcoming) birthday or christmas (which is right around the corner, people) I would be eternally grateful. Zoel the owner is such a cutie. My sweet angel and I came in here after eating the "Eh, ok" pizza from Gialina (see review) right around the corner. We came in and started poking around.. As I was picking up the cards and giggling, Zoel was jumping in and saying which ones were his favorites from across the room. He knew what each card was! I think that's so awesome; somebody who hand picks everything they put in their store instead of just unloading a whole bunch of random crap. He knew all about the jewelry and knew the prices of everything too. It was clear that he really takes pride in his store. Zoel is a sweetheart, and I wanted to stick around just to chat with him! So I ended up with a funny card and a little bean coinpurse for my sweet baby. They had all kinds of cute cards, little housewares, and Elizabeth W products (yay!) Also some cool jewelry made by local artists (also a plus). But most of all, they have a sweet little dreamboat of an owner named Zoel, who I would have taken with me if I could. read more

GAG Choke Air way closing up! When this cute shop opened it was safe for those of us who avoid cancer causing fragrance, but something has happened. It now stinks of fake scent. Which is so not necessary. The other day my friend and I took one step inside and nearly had toxic chemical reactions and we fled. You know how it is - you must buy a gift for someone that you do not really know. That, and you need to find a card that is at least somewhat original. So what do you do? Wander all over town, go to various malls, and eventually end up with something that you kinda know really sucks. So what is the alternative? Thankfully, there is an amazing alternative. PERCH!! I came across this gem of a store as part of a fund-raising event. I could have stayed longer but my appetite was forcing me to a nearby restaurant. An excellent selection of gifts, and many things that I would like for myself. From baby wear (loved the "iPoo" t-shirts), to wonderful colognes, a selection of beautifully scented soaps and candles, items for the kitchen, art work for walls, a hilarious pencil sharpener in the shape of a dog (I'll let you find out about that one), and THE best selection of cards that I have seen in a LONG time. Looking for jewelry that is a little different? Perch is your store! There are even a couple of purses that I thought my wife would really appreciate. There is no doubt, if you are stuck for one or more gifts, quit wasting your time and head on down to Perch.
