Did a small group lesson with Stewart on their First week back open. Not only was the lesson amazing but he was encouraging, exciting and overall very friendly. I've paid more at other rock climbing gyms for a fraction of what I got here. The gym itself is small but there are several paths that are challenging and exciting. I would highly recommend the outdoor wall as it is an adrenaline rush and super satisfying once you complete it. I will come back next time i'm in town! read more

First I must apologize as this review is suuuuper delayed - I was making recommendations for a friend visiting NC and when I pulled up Stuart's information to pass along, I realized I had never written this good man a well-deserved review! Better late than never?! Also, I should note - this review isn't about the gym facility itself, but the owner and the outdoor adventures they offer.... Anyway, Stuart took my wife and I out in May 2016 for a full 8-hour day of climbing at Snakes Den Rock. I can't remember if it just happened to end up as just us two or if we paid for it to be private, but regardless, it was AWESOME. He was so welcoming/friendly/helpful! He gladly worked with us for time/date adjustments and around questionable weather conditions to make sure to optimize our time for a fun and exciting learning experience during our limited available days to play. Stuart was incredibly knowledgeable and encouraging for us as beginners to outdoor climbing. His passion for what he does is truly authentic! We learned so much while also having an amazing time. I honestly wish we lived closer so that we could continue to grow our skills under his expert instruction. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! read more

I feel bad giving this place one star since this is one of the few climbing gyms in the area, but the other reviewers are correct. This gym has issues. Their padding is atrocious. I might be able to forgive the poorly padded floor if their crash pads didn't look like lumpy old quilts. Despite using one of the "crash pads" and only being 15ft up, I took a fall and wrecked my knee. Three weeks later and I am still recovering. I've certainly taken worse falls in every other gym I've been in without a problem. At the very least they should spend a little money on decent crash pads. If you come to the gym and the crash pads are still as flimsy as I have described leave; do not risk an injury it just isn't worth it. Also, I can understand that they need to make money so they cater to families bringing their young children in, but there is nearly no supervision going on. Kids younger than 10 years old running around, shouting, and jumping on the wall while you climb is just an accident waiting to happen. While the one lady working did try to reign the children in a couple of times, it had little effect. Finally the holds were nearly universally worn down to the point of being smooth and slick, no amount of brushing would help. This is a much more understandable issue given the age of the facility and the likelihood that they rarely if ever purchase new holds, but I figured I would mention it nonetheless. read more

More bouldering routes than climbing... The staff is friendly, accommodating, and thorough and they were playing awesome music. read more

Pretty cool place for people of all skill levels. There were little kids as well as some older and very skilled climbers. The place smells kind of like old shoes, which was a downside. The guy behind the counter was friendly and very helpful. Overall, it was a good temporary escape from the city. read more

Let me start by saying I am not an avid rock climber so that being said this place was great. The staff was super friendly and had us looking and climbing like champs in about 5 minutes. The price was great, got all the gear anyone would need and got to climb all day for $20. Location was good being close to a bunch of great places to eat cause you are gonna build an appetite up climbing all day. My only draw back and there was only one is that it gets a little warm inside but I guess that only bothers snowmen and pussies. read more

I went climbing with a Climbmax mountain guide, Will Black, and the entire experience was exactly what I had hoped for. We climbed my first multipitch route, the nose at Looking Glass in late October. The temperature was perfect and the leaves turning colors were spectacular. Most importantly, the guide Will is a consummate professional who knows his stuff backwards and forwards, and is a fantastic teacher. His knowledge of climbing is encyclopedic and he completely minimized the risk from climbing with someone like myself who was totally new to multipitch systems. Plus, he's a genuinely cool guy! If you're interested in taking your outdoor climbing to the next level, I highly recommend. read more

This is a must stop if you are in Asheville. The inside is set up to be fun for people of all ages and abilities, and the outside wall is a great place to display your newly discovered skills in front of friends and family. It has a great downtown location, that is within walking distance from everything, and with their bouldering pass, you can bring the young ones in to climb in the morning, then go do your sight seeing, and then come back in for a nice rest for you, while the kids wear themselves out before bed. read more

After only a short visit I can quite confidently say that this is the single worst climbing gym I have ever been to. For starters the rating system is a bizzare and confusing system of dots and stars that is nearly impossible to decipher. The holds are poorly maintained and clearly never cleaned before routes are set. The tape is almost never a solid color and is frequently patterned with minuscule figures that you would need a magnifying glass mid climb to decipher. The space is tiny, poorly ventilated and unsupervised children constantly run amok which any remotely responsible parent or climber would be appalled at. The staff is more often then not too busy climbing to assist anyone and when they do feel so inclined to assist anyone they are pretentious and unhelpful. When I asked one of them for clarification on how the rating system works and why they use it he fed me some BS about how there is a discrepancy between indoor and outdoor climbing so they don't use the hueco scale or really any standardized system. Floor padding is basically nonexistent and there are a grand total of (and I counted) 5, (yeah...)poorly maintained, crash pads in the whole building. The top roping indoors here doesn't even deserve the rating of laughable though the outdoor wall does look fairly new with an autobelay system. I could go on but I think you should get the picture. I would not recommend this place to anyone, ever. Overall a very poor, unsafe and disappointing experience. read more

The atmosphere in this gym is definitely not what i was used to. There's no climbing culture, but its super clean, I wasn't breathing chalk, and the holds were clean. It's mainly a bouldering gym, they do have top roping, but it seems to be just for kids. It was mainly kids at this gym, maybe because it was a Saturday afternoon, but the problems were interesting enough for me and there were lots of bouldering routes. I did get lost on some of the routes, because it seems like the colored tape gets rolled up or ripped off over time, but there's so many more other routes that it didn't matter that much. The kids do run around and some of them climb barefoot, but for the most part, their parents are right behind them and catch them before they do anything stupid. And they try to stay out of your way as much as possible. Good job NC parents! The dot system was easy enough to follow. One dot is v1-v2, and so on and so forth. The staff was super friendly and helpful. It was a good price $9.50, for an afternoon activity. I would recommend this gym whether you're new or seasoned. read more

this place was a lot of fun. dave, our instructor was great. very patient and helpful. we had 2 adults and 5 kids (ages 4 to 12) and we ended up staying there for 2.5 hours. best $100 ever spent for fun and exercise. highly recommend. read more
