I took my 30+ year old hybrid Fuji bike into Hearn's to get the tires replaced. I had gotten estimates around town and Hearn's came in $40 less expensive for the work and parts. When I got it back it had slicker looking tires on it, mine were more nubby, and I wasn't sure that's what I wanted - The owner was ready to change them out with a different tire but told me I should try it out and if I didn't like them, he'd replace them. I took it out on the trail and the bike rode better than it EVER has. It was faster and actually easier to ride! These guys really know their stuff! Thanks Hearn's! read more

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. I work downtown at an auto shop, very close to Hearn's cycle. I'd never been in this shop before, and normally go to Second Gear or Pro Bikes if I needed anything cycle related. Recently, I needed a Schrader valve for an automotive application. I noticed that it was exactly the same as those used on bicycles so I looked on Yelp and then remembered that Hearn's was just down the street. Cool, not only is this a close solution for my issue, I can also support another downtown business, if only in the most simplistic, elemental manner. It was only just over a block but I drove, just in case I wasn't able to get the part I needed and had to drive to another location. I pulled into the parking lot and recognized, just as I had many times passing the building before, the business has good curb appeal, if not for a slightly ambiguous entrance. I believe the building used to house an auto service type shop, and I like that the remodel didn't try to hide this with extraneous decoration or unnecessary flag. I entered the building to an empty receiving area, no problem, it's very early in the day the only individual at the shop was tending to the other two customers in the showroom area. While he wasn't immediately identifiable, wearing much the same style clothes as the other two guys on the floor, the proprietor of the shop made his position of retail superiority and "I'm the boss here"edness by looking at me through a sideways glance and barking a short, exasperated "can I HELP you?".... My first reaction prompted an internal dialogue "geez, did I get here early and accidentally walk in on some early morning bicycle cult meeting, my bad......maybe you should have locked the door....if you didn't want....customers???" Not expecting an impromptu inquisition as to why I would be so audacious as to expect someone to help me when there are clearly other people here, I stumbled for a millisecond before I began to present my query. "Um, yes, I am looking for a Sch.." he cut me off.....turning away and holding his hand up, palm towards me, as if gesturing a salute to the dictator and simultaneously dismissing my question, saying "I'll be with you after I help these people." For another millisecond I waited, then turned and left. I didn't need the small part so bad that I needed to pay for some of it with my own dignity. I don't get it. I see the previous reviews and all I can deduce is that maybe someone was having a bad morning, maybe it's a cultural difference or maybe, worst case scenario, it's just a matter of someone occupying an immediately downtown location in a city that is increasingly visited and populated by individuals with more money than dignity, sense or sophistication; that they can come to react so contemptuously to a complete stranger who happens to be a third customer in a row on an early weekday morning. Hearn's, which is "probably the oldest bike shop in america", occupies what looks like an old car-repair facility, with big garage-like doors giving it a very open/airy feel, nice. Tons of interesting used bikes for sale, rent, or borrow. Very nice staff that are as chill as possible. I rented a solid Felt track bike and hit the mellowdrome.com for thurs night racing, good times. They didn't have a tremendous selection of mountain bikes for rent, which I found a little surprising given the quality of Asheville's mtb scene, but maybe that's not their thing. Anyway, really nice people and a great shop make it worth a visit if you're in AVL. read more

We walked in this venue with money in hand to purchase new bikes. I guess the fact that we were two white haired men in our 60s, made them think we weren't serious about a purchase. We were there 10 minutes and not a soul spoke to us. They didn't even acknowledge us as we left. My words when we left were, "I'll never come back here again". read more

We went to buy some Schrader valves here. We were going to use them for something other than cycling. So the store gave us the valves for free because we could get them off of old tires. The staff was super helpful and everybody was really nice! It also looks like they have tons and tons of bikes. read more

Hearn's Bicycle used to be one of the dependable bicycle and bicycle repair shops in Asheville, not anymore. They have a large inventory of used bicycles with a few new ones mixed in but you have to be very careful and know what you are looking at before buying a used one. Hearn's has a horrendous reputation with other bicycle shops in town because they've all had to repair Hearn's mistakes at one time or another. Most of the mechanics are just plain bad. Hearn's has had good mechanics through the years but they seem to be far and few between and never around for long. The used bicycles are consistently over priced, and once you do buy one it will generally be in need of immediate repair. The most important word of caution is; NEVER TRY AND SELL A BICYCLE THERE, YOU NOT RECEIVE WHAT IT IS WORTH, IF YOU ARE ABLE TO GET ANYTHING OUT OF IT AT ALL! If you're looking for an occasional used or hard to find part, or even bicycle Hearn's is a great place to look just be prepared be disappointed. I bought a used road bike here for $450 and had issues with it from the start. the chain was popping off of the largest cog in the front. I returned to the shop to have it fixed and he did so...or I thought. It took over 4 returns to the shop to have it fixed. I told Clark that I did not want this bike anymore and I would like to return it. He said they do not do returns. I came back to the shop less than 2 months with another problem. The chain was making sounds the whole time I was using it. He told me that I put too much lube on the chain and it was wearing out. This caused the cassette to me warn and make this sound. He also said that there was a chip in the hub too. I requested my money back and he said "I have bent over backwards to make me happy" . I am not happy!...If you want a cheap bike go to Hearns. If you want a bike that works go somewhere else. read more

I purchased an entry level gravel bike from Clark in April and have put roughly 60 miles on it. In the meantime, I upgraded the rear cassette, derailleur and shifter for more range on the low end. A bike mechanic friend of mine helped me with install and we couldn't get the shifting as smooth as it should be. Upon looking at the rear hanger where the derailleur mounts it was clear that the hanger was bent 3 degrees or so and causing the issue with shifting. I called Clark with the issue and immediately he was shifting blame theorizing that I wrecked the bike...the components were not compatible and so forth. A reasonable response to a customer who just bought a new bike under warranty would be to "bring it in and we will get you taken care of..." He also said he was 1-2 weeks out on service. Are you kidding me? I have been a great customer and especially one that is under warranty should have priority. I suggest to Clark to work on his customer relations and doing more to retain those customers..you just lost one! read more

I have had good luck at this shop for finding used, low-cost replacement parts. The owner (Clark?) is always easy to work with and he will spend a lot of time to locate an old part that he'll then end up charging next to nothing for. I've found them to be honest and no-nonsense. It's a budget bike shop for sure, but the help I've received there (I've been there 30 times at least) often surpassed what I've received at other higher-end shops. I recently visited Asheville to enjoy a weekend of outdoor adventures. Since Western North Carolina is popular with mountain bikers, the area has a lot of bike shops that cater to those bikers. Knowing that, I hoped to find a good deal on a quality bike. During my last day there, I had some time to visit a few shops. I went to four shops, that all sold new bikes. I was looking for a full suspension, new or used. The prices on those bikes were $2,500 - 6,000, and none of those shops sold used bikes. Without a budget for a bike in that price range, I thought I'd be returning to Virginia bikeless, but a friendly worker at the last shop I visited told me to stop by Hearn's Cycling and Fitness. I went to Hearn's right away. It's huge shop with a ton of bikes, mostly used, some new. It took me just a few minutes to find a really nice, used, high quality full suspension mountain bike. Owning that bike would totally stoke my trail rides and allow me to keep going through high obstacles, like logs, roots and rocks. The staff patiently answered my questions. I took a test ride and liked the bike a lot. The price, although, not very high for the brand and model, a Titus FTM, was still out of my budget. Clark, the owner, was willing to reduce the price a bit and even held the bike for a couple of hours while I went to check one more place and think about my possible purchase. I decided to return for that Titus, but when I arrived, an associate, unaware that I may be buying it, was watching a very enthused customer ride it around the parking lot. I thought oh boy, this bike is not for me. It would be totally up to Clark to save me. I didn't say anything, I was just gonna let whatever happen, happen and reason it, by saying it just wasn't meant for me. Apparently, the Titus was meant for me:) Clark saw me sitting around and kindly told the associate and customer that it was being held for me, no problems. I paid for it, got it all tuned up and was assisted with putting in my compact car. As I headed back to Virginia, I realized that I left behind an included shock pump. I called back and Clark offered to mail it to me. I thought it would be the used pump that the previous owner of the Titus had, but I opened the package to a new Topeak PocketShock DXG. The box was even packed with two 24hr prayer line t-shirts, by Methodist Motorsports Evangelism. This all supports the very positive experience I had at Hearn's. Every single staff member was helpful, kind and friendly. Clark knows how to run a shop. I greatly appreciate excellence in customer service, especially these days, it seems rare. It's safe to consider me a lifelong customer. I speak highly of Hearn's and Clark and will surely stop by when I'm in Asheville. I was downtown and driving by this establishment I decided to stop in and have a look. I have to say this is a really cool bike shop. They have everything right there and their knowledge of bikes is amazing. From the moment I walked in I was asked if I could be helped and every question answered. The employees and owner seem happy to help. After years of owning my own car restoration business and now working on ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati and porsche just to name a few I can tell when a business has what it takes to make the customers happy. I brought my daughters bike in there to have the handlebars raised, and instead of either doing that or telling us that was not possible with this bike, Clark, who I believe is the owner, insisted that the bike was fine and my daughter was just riding it wrong. He proceeded to give her bike lessons on how to sit on a bike properly, and then decided that he would put metal extenders on each handle bar making it very awkward for her to ride, her hands no longer touching where the brakes and gear shifters are. Before he did this we were telling him this is not what we want and he insisted that this would help and began to cut the rubber off of one of the handlebars to fit the bar extenders on it. As he was doing that I stopped him and told him I'm not sure he should be cutting when I don't know exactly what this is going to be like or if we even want this done. Clark insisted that we DID want this done and that this would help the problem. So he proceeded to cut both rubber grip ends off of my daughters handlebars and put the bar extenders on each one. We were not happy - I'm sure he could tell we were not happy - he told us that we would be happy if we just tried it out and to come back to him if otherwise. He charged us $15 for these bar extenders that we did not want and $7 for labor that we did not ask for. A week later we came back to ask them to take off the extenders because we do not want them, and to put the cut ends of the handlebar grips back on the bike. We also wanted a refund for the extenders that we were returning back to them. The one young man that was doing the fixing told us that he would take care of it for us. When we came back to pick up the bike, he had replaced the grips that Clark had destroyed, but refused to give us our money back. They said we could have store credit, but I did not need that. They refused a cash refund. So I asked to talk to Clark again. Clark insisted that I would not be happy no matter what he did and that he will not give us a cash refund or store credit now that he could tell I was irritated. I kept my cool the best I could and was not rude or ugly even though he told me I was. I said if he's not going to give me my money back then I will take the handlebar extenders with me. And that I will count his $7 of "labor" towards the new grips he put on our bike. I would not recommend the shop to anyone. He will not do what you want him to do. Great bicycle shop! I have been to Hearn's several times over the past 5-6 years. They have always done quality work at a fair price. They also have a great selection of new and used bikes (road, mountain & hybrid). The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I sometimes bike with another of Hearn's customers that has been very happy with the used bike she purchased there. The owner is just a really great guy. I have seen him give small jobs (cleaning etc.) to disadvantaged people that really needed some work. All I have ever heard, from other cyclists, is good things about Hearn's. read more

I bought two used bikes at this place, each for $200, and later found out they had all sorts of problems. The sales man or owner (not sure which), when asked for the price, seemed to make it up off the top of his head. I also tried to buy a new tire but was sold a used one (aka discarded) that turned out to have a sizable hole in it. I feel that, if the workers/owner feel that you are inexperienced, they will take advantage of you rather than help you find a bike that fills your needs and meets your budget. Then, if you ask for a refund, they will only give you store credit. Better to shop somewhere the prices are clearly marked from the beginning and where the sales people take their time with you and explain what you need to know. If you are an expert and know how to choose a bike, then maybe you will find a deal here. But be forewarned about the pricing issue. I will not shop here again. read more

Came in to get front brakes adjusted. Bruce was really nice and took the time to closely look at what was going on. Turns out the back brakes needed adjusting, too. He gave me a great deal and really worked to make sure I was satisfied. He was working on another project but had the patience, time, and positive attitude to listen to my problem, spot fix it, and make sure everything else was cool with the bike. I came to him with what we thought was a 10 minute problem, but he took the 30 minutes to work with me to get this bike up and running at 110%! Buyers beware!!! My wife and I brought our 10 speed bikes in to be converted to a hybrid bikes capable of doing light off road-gravel biking. When we dropped the bikes off we were impressed on what they said they could do. Plus the safety of "if you are not happy we will return everything we put into them plus $100.00." We felt safe until we picked them up. They couldn't put the wider tires on them plus the safety statement changed to "$350.00 towards trade in if we were not happy." Well we picked them up anyway just to try them and guess what-unhappyX10. We went out and bought new bikes capable of light trail riding. Now we are stuck with them. Untrustworthy! read more

Excellent Service, excellent prices, and excellent selection. Skip the "bike snobbery" found and other shops in the area and take a trip to Hearn's. If you can't find a bike to your liking they will write down what you want and give you a call if something comes in. Excellent trade in value for used parts as well. I stopped into Hearn's on vacation out of pure curiosity. I am bike fanatic and this shop was one of the best shops I have ever experienced. They have a ton of cool used components you can rifle through and thus they are a perfect place to go if you are building up a commuter or a cross bike. My favorite attribute is the employees laid back nature which I can't say is true for some of the other shops I visited in the area. read more

I went to acquire missing parts for an old mountain bike (brakes, levers, etc.) I was helped quickly and made to believe that this type of interaction was common for them (they are known as a secondhand supplier). The clerk listed out the parts estimate: a total of $90. He then estimated $50 in labor, but I explained that I would do the assembly. The clerk then said that in this case he would need to charge a "locating fee." He was unable to accurately explain what this fee was (locate the parts in the store?) but I asked if it was insurance that the parts would fit. I was told yes. And so I left the bike in order that the parts would be matched appropriately to the bicycle. Returning home two days later after picking up the parts, I realized several compatibility issues: one brake was the wrong size for the mounts; the inner tubes had the wrong valve; and the cable/housing system was missing ferrules. When I went back, I was given a refund on the brake and given the other appropriate missing things. I mentioned the "locating fee" and asked again if this wasn't a monetary insurance that parts would fit. I was told the fee was not refundable. I left, wishing to avoid any confrontation; however, back home, I realized another issue: the brake lever didn't fit. On the fourth visit, I was told by the owner Clark Hollins that he would not refund the "locating fee" and that he doesn't do refunds (despite the fact that he had given me one the visit earlier for the brake lever). He did say that he would replace the brake lever. It is important to keep in mind their prices (they sold me a used v-brake for $10 and I found a brand new one, similar model, for $18.95). He then mentioned that he has to hire young workers, and that sometimes they "don't like someone" and will "jerk them around" by putting bad parts on. He then dropped several f-bombs in the course of stating that said employees will often act like "douche bags." I was floored. He then said that he would get a new lever but that I would need to leave the bike. I told him I was hesitant after hearing what he had just said, and that he obviously did not stand by the fact that he was responsible as owner. I was also told that I could not get the fee back. I told him that this was a poor business model, and that I would not come back and would tell my friends. He mocked my statement that I would tell others my experience, asking if by doing so I was "threatening" him. In the end, I walked past him to the service station, had the original clerk pick out a new lever that fit, and walked out of the store. I guess I didn't have to leave the bike (called that bluff), and I'm damn glad that I didn't. This was hands down the worst consumer experience I've ever had with the OWNER of an establishment. Perusing other reviews, it appears that your luck may be better if you are purchasing a complete bicycle (though one review describes the ham-handed manner in which their bike was "tuned"--a manner that is apparently common as I'm now learning anecdotally from others I tell of my experience. Caveat emptor, caveat emptor. This was my first interaction at Hearns and I will NOT be returning. p.s. Potential shoppers, look at the location of the reviewers for this store. They have more positive than negative reviews, yet there are also a number of reviewers not from Asheville. Somewhat telling... read more

Hearns sold me a decent used bike. That's about all I can give them credit for. I took it in a couple of weeks ago and asked the service guy to replace the break pads and give the bike a thorough "going over" to make sure it was safe and everything was in good shape. Those were my exact words. I paid a lot of money to get this done. The service guy told me what a hard time he'd had bleeding the brakes, etc, but that it was done. When I picked up the bike and went to bent creek to ride the same day, I had very little front brake at all at first, then none. I took it back to hearns. They replaced the hand grip and charged me an additional $25. I didn't agree with this but I paid it and went on. 2 rides later I'm deep in the woods when I loose my rear brake.. Completely. Seriously? So, a little bruised and really ticked off from the wipe out on the way back down the mountain when the brakes failed, I took it back to Hearn's again where they explained to me how this is all a big, strange coincidence. I told them I really didn't expect to have to pay for this repair. I had made it clear exactly what I wanted done in the first place and that's what I had paid for.. Or so I thought.. They agreed to no fee this time and said they would replace the other hand grip. Ok, I'm a girl. I've explained to these guys I need to be able to trust them. I'm not very knowledgeable about the brake system. I was however, losing trust in them. When I picked up the bike, after a lot of attitude and several condescending comments from the service guy, and the owner trying to justify his crappy service. On my way to Bent Creek to ride, I decided to stop by Carolina Fatz to see if someone would mind to look over my bike. At this point I just didn't feel good about Hearns and I did not feel safe. The owner, Jason, dropped what he was doing to check on things for me. When he took my bike off the rack and rode it in the parking lot, fully engaging the rear brake, he was still able to pedal my bike through the lot. (I feel like I've been kicked in the teeth!) He took the bike into his shop and pulled the front and rear brakes apart in front of me. I wish I could post a picture here of what he described as "screwdriver notches" where the pads had been pried out. Huge chunks were gone from the pads and they had been contaminated. He and his staff then checked over everything to find that the lines need to be flushed too... (Are you kidding me?) So, now I'm left with having spent too much money on a half ass job done by a service guy with an attitude who got ticked off because I brought my bike in with an issue on something he had done. I'm not asking for anything. I just want others to know of my experience. Don't take their word for it at Hearns. Take it apart and have a look or take it to Jason at Carolina Fatz and have him go through it before you buy from Hearns. They claim to thoroughly tune up their used bikes before selling them but after my experience I know their service department is hugely lacking! The difference in service between Hearns and Carolina Fatz is like night and day. I was amazed by the friendly welcome and attention to detail Jason provided. He made sure I saw everything he was doing, while he was doing it, and explained, in detail what I was looking at and what needed to be done. He even managed to do it without bashing Hearn's. Judging by his expression, I know that must have been a challenge, but it showed a lot of class. He told me it's not safe and explained what has to be done to get it there. I have to have the whole thing done again. Bleeding, pads, everything. Unbelievable. The situation sucks, but lesson learned. Carolina Fatz earned my business today.. and I am busy spreading the word! I was not treated well at Hearns and I was sent away with a mountain bike that was not at all safe. On this visit they took the time to describe various rides I could take and the river run ride along The French Broad River they suggested was perfect. I went in to Hearn's today to look at used mountain bikes, and took in my old, but still in decent shape Cannondale. The guys there were very knowledgable, helpful, and worked with me to get another bike. They gave me a really good deal on a used but very good Trek mountain bike, and gave me a fair price as a trade-in for mine. I was very happy with the exchange, and they even transferred over my saddle and my odometer, at no charge. If you are looking to upgrade, buy new or used, or just sell your old bike, this is the places go in Asheville! read more

Great shop. good folks , always visit this shop when I am in Asheville. They do what they can to find what I want. Where else are you going to find a shop that does what they do,. All the other shops are dealing with weight weenies who want the latest greatest lightest piece of crap that breaks on every ride, these folks at Hearns sell good stuff for serious down to earth cyclists. I bought a bike at Hearns last April, knowing nothing about bikes. I got it home and on the first test ride immediately the gear switching mechanism on the handle broke. I had to bring it back and deal with having them repair it. I had no car at the time so this was a serious pain in the butt, and they kept it a few days to do it. For what I paid it should have been working! Now I've not ridden it really that much (got car and too busy but I will ride it more soon) and my boyfriend took it out the other day for a spin. Something else was wrong with it and he had to spend time repairing that. He says in addition the tires are kind of crappy and there's something going on with the chain. I just looked it up online, there is an identical bike for sale, I paid $251 for it at Hearns - 35 of that was for a new seat for it so 210 was the bike. The seller in Pittsburg has it at 270 but it looks great (way better than mine) the tires have tread and look good and also the seller says "The old drivetrain parts that were on it were pretty worn out so we replaced them. This bike just got a new chain, cassette and a new outer chainring. We did a full tuneup including a cleaning, adjusting everything and truing the wheels." to their credit, Hearns added some extension handle bar attachments to the bike. I wish they would have done all stuff the Pittsburg seller did, and to have good tires. I guess its overpriced but not incredibly overpriced? (Boyfriend probably would disagree) but the thing is, for something you take home and have things falling apart on - that's just no fun no matter what you pay - I just think they should have done something to improve it before selling it.
