Large shop with good selection of Trek and other bikes and accessories. Friendly and helpful sales staff. During a recent Trek promotion, we bought my 7yo daughter her first bike with multiple gears - a Trek Roscoe 24" 8spd, and bought my wife a 29" 12spd medium frame Trek Marlin 6 so she can keep up with my daughter. We also had repairs and upgrades done on my 10yo son's well-used 27.5" 12spd extra small Trek Marlin. Several techs are available for repairs and mods. Techs are allowed to have their dogs in the work bays - my family are all dog people, so we liked that, too. Liberty Bicycles is worth the almost-an-hour one-way drive, for us. read more

Well, it's that time of year and I'm celebrating with a new Norco Storm 5 bicycle from Liberty Bicycle. I've been shopping there for the past two decades and this is my third bike from Liberty. They have the bikes but they also have a service department and the personnel that make this company outstanding. My sincere feeling is that each person on the staff really cares about getting you on the right bike and getting you out the door to a happy bicycling experience whether you're a young 'un, serious biker, or an old codger like me. They truly want you to have the right experience so you'll keep on biking. They have a lot of electric bikes right now if you're looking for a bike for major transportation but I'm an old fashioned guy and like to duff around on my pleasure bike. Brian was my sales guy and he made sure I got the bike custom fitted so it would be just right. He even gave me a follow-up call to remind me of the free tune-up in a month. Great bike store! I just bought my first e-bike (and wished I hadn't waited this long) and researched the market. Liberty is just down the street and I went there several times. All of the staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. Coleman was especially great. I also talked to Matt, Lennie, Jake, and some other guys who know their stuff. They let me demo the bike for hours and I was able to buy a wonderful bike on sale, the Trek Dual Sport, and they had great ideas for modifying it. I love riding it! They also repaired my road bike and did a great job. This is a great bicycle shop in South Asheville that's staffed by friendly and knowledgeable enthusiasts! We bought my son a Trek here and got him outfitted with everything he'd need. They sell more than just Trek, so feel free to stop in and take a look. The friendly folks there will be more than willing and able to help you get the best bang for your buck in the bike market. Another great service they handle there is Bike Flights. I recently sold a mountain bike and used Bike Flights FedEx shipping service through them to get it shipped safely to New Hampshire. All I had to do (beside pay for the shipping) was drop the bike off. The disassembled it, boxed it and shipped it. Great store! Great people and great selection! read more

We made reservations in advance for two full suspension mountain bikes. When we arrived, they were in the midst of an inventory turn-over and had accidentally doubled-booked one of our bikes with another customer who would be arriving the next day. They offered to put me on one of their end-of-season sale ladies bikes instead (since the other customer was a man), making all the appropriate adjustments to accommodate my size and fit. No complaints there. And for our trouble and delay in getting out the door, we were promised free t-shirts. They then proceeded to recommend specific trails at different parks based on our level and what we like to ride. Sam, the general manager, even took the time to highlight the trails on our maps (very nice, detailed and laminated maps worth buying). When we returned our bikes two days later, Sam was there to greet us, even remembering and mentioning first that he had forgotten to give us our free tees (quite nice, soft cotton ones, btw). The check-in process was smooth and easy, and while browsing through store merchandise, Sam offered-up all kinds of tips on local eateries, especially his favorite places for BBQ. I called them and we stopped by on the way into town. They checked everything out and recommended 3 different price points for replacement. They had it swapped out and ready to roll while we waited. This shop is consistently voted best bike shop in asheville. I have had work done at almost every shop in asheville, and although they do good work, they will CHEAT YOU. Almost everything in the shop is more expensive than other shops. $40 OVER MSRP on xt brakes sound reasonable to you? Sold me a bleed kit that didn't function, then gave me flack about returning it. Had a ridiculously expensive bike fit, that was WAY OFF and that didn't solve my numb hands - was told I needed to work out (had a fit elsewhere problem instantly solved). I have been totally ignored (twice!) while employees chit chatted with prosperous appearing customers. DON'T BE FOOLED. read more

While visiting family and friends in WNC we decided that we had to do something active so why not our first love, mountain biking. I called several months in advance to rent the bikes. I later called back to request a trail map with which I was told reluctantly they could mail it to me. Well, yes of course, it never crossed my mind that I would receive it any other way and yes of course I knew I had to pay for it. Hindsight, that should have been a sign perhaps based on their response when I asked to purchase the map and have it mailed to me. They were also not very willing to allow me to pick up the bikes the night before (near closing time) so that we would have the bikes first thing the next morning so we could get our ride on. I told them I completely understood if the bikes were already rented for that day as I could just wait to the next morning but would prefer to pick them up the night before so we could leave early. They were not rented and they finally did agree to let us pick them up at closing time the night before. We struck off on our ride and after riding a extremely mild rolling hill single track we reached the top. We had to walk the bikes a bit and while walking the bikes we noticed the front wheel on one of the bikes was bent. We truly have no idea what happened as there were no falls and absolutely nothing technical on this trail. I have had some serious spills over the past 13 yrs riding in Fruita, Moab, and downhilling in CO. NEVER have a bent a wheel or had any serious damage. Needless to say we were quite bummed as we had to walk the bike out (in the rain) for the last hour in a half or more. Not to mention our families were waiting for us for hours while we were so delayed due to the bike wheel. We immediately returned to the bike shop after the ride. I was quite surprised that their response was that we would have to pay for the repairs. I know they didn't know us and I suppose people lie about such things, but we knew we did NOTHING to bend this wheel. We have done business with MANY bike shops over the years and have never seen such a thing happen. We paid for the damages (over $150) that we did not incur or feel we were responsible for and then asked for a refund of the next two days of our rental. At this point we didn't have confidence in riding their bikes anyway after such a benign trail and a bent wheel later. When asked if they were going to replace the wheel they said no, it would be rebuilt. Really? How many times had this wheel been "rebuilt" to where perhaps it was just weak and this is what caused such a problem in the first place which WE had to pay for? Horrible practices for rental equipment or any equipment actually. Not only that, but after we had to pay for a defunct wheel they then charged us more for our one day rental than originally charged because it was not discounted at a three day rate. This place will nickle and dime their customers, rent out poor if not to say unsafe ill maintained rental equipment. Find another bike shop that knows how to treat customers. Poor customer service is bad business in the world of social media. read more

This is my go-to bike shop, because they have a good selection of quality bikes and they have a large selection of bike accessories. My husband loves the road bike Claudia helped him select. She measured him and determined which would fit him best for long mountain road climbs, and for 3 years he has ridden and done so comfortably. The staff has a long tenure, so the shop feels like a personal "home" bike shop instead of just a store. Some staff lead weekly bike rides for cyclist of different fitness levels, and they support the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club. I was visiting Asheville when I experienced a component failure on a propriety wheel set. I visited 6 shops to try to resolve the issue. Liberty was the only shop that tried to fix the wheel and didn't charge me for their effort. Super experience here getting my wife fitted for a bike to ride a 240 mile tour. Brian demonstrated extensive knowledge of frame materials, geometry, and components. Importantly, he combines this with great listening and communication skills. He spent time finding out about her as a rider and her thoughts about her next bike. He worked to get her fit with what works in terms of comfort and efficiency. Right frame, right stem, right saddle, right drivetrain etc. The whole process was directed to the right bike for this rider, for this purpose. His thoughts and advice were never pushy, always directed to her satisfaction. Needless to say, she is thrilled with the bike. It rolled out well assembled with the drivetrain tuned and functioning flawlessly, and an open invitation to bring it back for "while you wait" adjustments when normal cable stretch etc takes place. It seems like everybody in here really knows what they're doing -- no mechanics ignoring customers while they work on bikes because the management thinks they should be able to fix bikes AND wait on customers. Nope, at Liberty there's a dedicated sales staff -- a very knowledgeable dedicated sales staff -- who are always ready to help while not being pushy or "lurky". Liberty has a big selection of drool-worthy bikes, usually none so much as the real rider of the day that someone on their staff actually rolled in on -- yes, that's right, they don't just sell bikes, they like to ride bikes too!! I bought a top fuel ex 9.9. I paid somewhere around 9k for the bike about 6 months ago. Everything went well until I tried to demo a bike at 3 pm on a weekday(two weeks ago) when it was raining and the guy at the front wanted to charge me for a two day rental. I tried to talk to the guy about it and he refused to help me out. He told me I could come back at 6pm to get the bike (mind you, it was during the week and raining so no way he was renting the bike to anyone) he would charge me $20 extra for picking it up the day before. I only wanted to use the bike until 2pm the next day. (I was riding at 8am the next day and had to leave to get back home to SC as I tried to explain to the guy at the desk who refused to hear a word or care at all) 4 hours after opening it would have been returned). Anyway, kind of sucks to spend that kind of money with a business and them not care. I'm buying another bike in a week or two but it will NOT be bought from Liberty!! Luckily another local shop helped me out. read more
