Arrowhead is mostly straight runs at the flag with some hazards and hills, but it's still fun and challenging for most players. This has been the staple of the course since they opened in 1965. I've played several courses in the area and this is as good as it gets in Central Maine.

You weren't allowed to drink beer as you made your way around the holes (though you can purchase and have a drink in their main building) Now for the fun part, the pros: - Despite the landscape, you didn't feel buggy--which was a fantastic departure from camping the night before - Challenging par three; you have the Kennebec River on one side, large and small hills throughout, trees in the center, and the pond to cross - The course feels private and relaxing, and Maine-picturesque - The family owners and staff are super friendly - And the best part, it was crazy cheap: for renting four clubs, six balls, and one person to play the course and a soda, the bill came to $15.50. Sweet. Tip: They accept cash or personal checks, no credit/debit cards.

Bangor Muni is pound-for-pound the best golf course in the greater Bangor area. With 27 total…read moreholes (one 18-hole course plus the bonus "Kelly 9"), it's always easy to get on even during peak times. For practice, it has two oversized pitching/putting greens by the clubhouse and an easy-to-use, coin-operated range (tip: do the 3 for $10 deal). The course is typically in excellent shape, and while it has very few water hazards, it makes up for it with multiple doglegs, undulating greens, and well-placed bunkers. The course has several weeknight events and tournaments on the weekend, appealing to all levels of golfers. For example, my wife loves the "Wine and 9" ladies night, which features group instruction and drinks/snacks at the end. There are a variety of membership options that can save you some money, but overall, it's quite affordable to play, and I tend to opt for the 10-play passes (available for greens fees and cart), which provide a small discount. The ballpark cost of playing 18 with a cart is $40-45. After your round, the siren song of the attached Hero's restaurant/19th hole (with an incredible deck overlooking beautiful scenery) will demand your presence and assist you with either drowning out that crucial missed par putt or celebrating a record round. It features a solid draft beer lineup (typically BL, a rotating Sam Adams varietal, and Frye's Leap IPA) with several alternative bottle options and a pared down menu from the main Hero's downtown location. We always end up chatting with whoever is working. This year the course was in excellent shapw. Greens were nicely kept. Tee boxes were a little beat up but not bad. For a 2 man crew they keep it well kept. 9 hole course but we usually play blue tees first then white tees. Fun course!
