A very neat piece of Oak Ridge history. Oak Ridge,…read moreTennessee, was established during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project, a top-secret U.S. government program to develop atomic weapons. It was officially founded in 1942. At its peak during the war, Oak Ridge's population swelled to around 75,000 people. This remarkable growth was driven by the need for a large workforce to support the development of atomic weapons, particularly the uranium enrichment process taking place at the Oak Ridge facilities. The city was shrouded in secrecy during its early years, with its existence not widely known to the public. It played a critical role in the development of the atomic bomb, including the uranium enrichment work carried out at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. There were restaurants, stores, food halls, and recreational structures built to support the city. This pool was one of those structures. This is a historic pool. It was originally constructed in 1944 by the Corps of Engineers and underwent major renovation in 1992-1993. It was reopened in the summer of 1994. The pool is spring water-fed and considered one of the largest in the nation with depths ranging from zero to 13-1/2 feet. It is located between Providence Road and Highland Avenue. It was not open when I stopped by but there is a plaque that describes it's history. It is a massive pool and easy to see from the parking lot. Their website states that it, "...is in need of major repairs as it is leaking large amounts of water each day and does not meet current code requirements. The City has selected a consulting firm to facilitate a planning process and gather data on existing conditions as well as collect community input to determine next steps for the pool."

This facility has a roomy kiddie pool with a mushroom shaped shower for the young ones to frolic through and more fountains as you enter the main pool area that cascade as you walk into the sloping beach-like larger kid area ( about 2 ft deep before reaching the buoy line barrier). As you pass the buoy barrier the decline in the pool continues to approximately 4ft before reaching the dock area; which always have 2 lifeguards constantly patrolling (and I do mean patrolling) for everyone's safety. You have a large grassy area to lie your towels down or set up a sport cover as long as it doesn't extend more that 10ft Sq. Multiple trash receptacles, that are constantly maintained and an ice cream station later in the afternoon. My family enjoys this establishment and will continue to do so.

Review: Karns Lion Pool (aka Karns Lion Library)…read more Today was my first experience at Karns Lion Pool. With the heat blazing, it seemed like the perfect day to cool off. But after our visit, I'm convinced they need to change the name to Karns Lion Library. I'll explain. First, we checked the website beforehand to see if they accepted cards. It said they did--just with a small fee--so I didn't bother grabbing cash. Turns out, they do take credit cards... just not debit cards. Which makes zero sense. It's literally the same machine, y'all. Luckily, I scraped up enough cash to get through the gate. Once inside, my daughter and I hopped on a rubber tube--one the pool actually provides--and started floating around together. That's when the Pool Czar (yes, we gave her a title) marched over and told us we couldn't be on the same tube... even though she's my daughter. That was our first clue something was off. Then we noticed how quiet it was. The place was packed, but you could hear a pin drop. No splashing, no shouting, no playing--because apparently, all of that is banned. No roughhousing. No sharing tubes. No being loud. Basically, no fun. We kept joking that if we laughed too hard, the Pool Czar would blow the whistle and banish us. Honestly, if you have loud, happy, energetic kids... this is probably not your pool. Now, for the positives: - There's a small slide, two diving boards, and a splash pad for the littles (though no lifeguard over there). - The concession stand is decent and affordable. - And despite the rules, we still had a great time with the group of us--mostly because we laughed at the whole situation. So yeah. Bring cash. Keep your voice down. And prepare for the most entertainingly quiet pool experience of your life.

The family membership is affordable and worth it if you have young children who can utilize the child watch while adults exercise. There is a great variety of group fitness classes to meet differing interests and fitness levels. We really enjoy the swimming lessons as well. We have done private, semi-private and group and they really helped our kids with water skills and confidence. Lessons fill up quickly, so start checking mid-month for the next round of lessons to spring up on the website. This location isn't the most modern or well-kept. There seem to be lots of issues when it rains, and the layout is very strange. The small-ish workout/weights space is accessed by first going downstairs and then back up another set of stairs in the back of the building. There is also a musty/moldy smell that kicks up our allergies at times.

On six separate occasions I have not been able to do my planned workout because the area which was scheduled to be open was not open. I get that schedules change but the very least they could do is update the online schedule. I am done wasting my time here.

To be proactive and clear, I even sent them pictures ahead of time showing exactly what the pool looked like so there would be no surprises. When they finally arrived, they claimed they couldn't do the job and that it would take "multiple trips" instead. Look, I understand this is an incredibly busy time of year for pool companies, but they obligated themselves to this job. Instead of honoring that commitment, they had the nerve to charge me $250 just to pour a single 16-ounce bottle of algaecide into the water and walk away. Charging full price for an opening when they did absolutely nothing is highway robbery. To make matters worse, their customer service is a joke. I have tried calling them multiple times to resolve this. Every single time I get transferred to the service department, the phone just rings and rings until it finally disconnects and hangs up on me. Avoid this company at all costs. They will happily take your money, refuse to do the work they agreed to, and then ghost you when you call them out on it.

Unfortunately, upon our check in we arrived to one dirty condo and one dirty house. The condo had not even been cleaned from the previous guests. In the house clothes were found between the sheets, the counters were sticky, beer cans were under the couches, etc. Instead of our guests arriving and relaxing, they immediately began cleaning. Wendy and Megan were aware of the situation, and failed to find solutions. Instead, they acted as if this was our problem. We confirmed the rentals two months in advanced and reminded management/owner that the rentals were for our daughters wedding. The home was a disaster when we showed up at 4 PM. We told all of our out of town guests and local family members to be at the house at 6 PM for dinner that we were going to grill at the house. The house was so dirty it was very uncomfortable - hair and clothes in the beds, dirty dishes everywhere, empty beer cans under the couch and unfortunately more dirt. Even the propane tank was empty. So our guests, with us, had to go out and get cleaning stuff and clean the house, run the sheets in the washer and I had to go get a new propane tank. It was a total disaster. One of the condo's we rented even had crap in the toilet. Still can not believe that the owners never checked either rental after we called and let them know of the disaster. What a mess.
