Unfortunately, upon our check in we arrived to one dirty condo and one dirty house. The condo had not even been cleaned from the previous guests. In the house clothes were found between the sheets, the counters were sticky, beer cans were under the couches, etc. Instead of our guests arriving and relaxing, they immediately began cleaning. Wendy and Megan were aware of the situation, and failed to find solutions. Instead, they acted as if this was our problem. The office is 15 minutes away from our rentals and they never showed up to view the situation or discuss options with us in person.

We confirmed the rentals two months in advanced and reminded management/owner that the rentals were for our daughters wedding. The home was a disaster when we showed up at 4 PM. We told all of our out of town guests and local family members to be at the house at 6 PM for dinner that we were going to grill at the house. The house was so dirty it was very uncomfortable - hair and clothes in the beds, dirty dishes everywhere, empty beer cans under the couch and unfortunately more dirt. Even the propane tank was empty. So our guests, with us, had to go out and get cleaning stuff and clean the house, run the sheets in the washer and I had to go get a new propane tank. It was a total disaster. One of the condo's we rented even had crap in the toilet. Still can not believe that the owners never checked either rental after we called and let them know of the disaster. What a mess.

There's also a small separate lake for non-motorized craft. You can rent kayaks or bring your own for a small fee. Note that the segregated lake does not permit inflatable craft. There are several picnic pavilions and tables throughout the park. The swimming area is nice and has a paved bottom that slopes in towards a platform for jumping off etc. the bottom of the swim area can be slippery. There are also cabins for rent that look nice though we didn't stay in one. It's about 45 minutes from Knoxville. It's worth a visit.

Late arrivals are allowed which is hard to find sometimes. Camping area is not well marked, some people got lost and I helped them find the right area while I was camping here. You'll get to the big parking lot and then see some large brown trash dumpsters on the left, that's where the turn for camping is. That's also the only area I found to throw your camping trash. Bathrooms are very run down, but clean. Showers are cold even after waiting a few minutes hoping it would warm up. Lots of cigarette trash on the ground, especially around the bathrooms. Dogs are allowed, on leashes.

It was a good visitor center and had some cool merch and friendly rangers with good advice. We hiked a bit, saw many mushrooms, squirrels, birds and snakes. Fortunately for me, a person who is very much afraid of bears and wants nothing to do with them, I did not see any bears during my visit to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. But they're there! Lurking ... somewhere ... in the forest, I'm sure. I visited during the spring, when the bears were waking up from their long slumber, and I'm sure they were just waiting, with growling tummies, to eat someone. Because of the bears, I didn't travel too far away from the visitor center area of Newfound Gap. But there are trails and other things to see that are beautiful if you like hiking and whatnot. As for me, I was satisfied staying close to where there was more concrete and cars than nature. (I know! I'm kind of dumb sometimes.) Newfound Gap straddles both Tennessee and North Carolina, so you can be in two states at once -- literally, you can have one foot in Tennessee and the other in North Carolina! There's also a cool rock structure that you can climb to the top of called the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial, where you'll get great views of the mountains. They really do look smoky! They ain't lyin'. The Newfound Gap area of the Smoky Mountains also has a trailhead for the Appalachian Trail, plus restrooms. I saw backpackers who definitely looked like they had been on the the Appalachian Trail for a while. I've since learned that although this is not the largest national park, it's the most visited, and I believe it! There were quite a lot of people at the Newfound Gap area. That said, I visited a few other places around the park where there were zero people, so you might have to change locations, depending on how many people you want to share your park experience with.

I prefer this side of the lake anyway so you don't have a ton of options but for what you pay, improvements should be made. They redid the dock story last year after new ownership and that's about it. I won't stop coming here, but this place has a lot of work to do.

Section 7 is the applicable portion to beaches and explains testing for E. coli. If this is indeed an area that has been sectioned off for swimming then plans need to be submitted to Public Safety Branch to start the process of getting an establishment number and routinely inspected. Why haven't we been testing this area? It was never filed. Oh and there are still people swimming all around it, but our focus was on the beach, I guess water stays in one area. Also our county told the Commonwealth Joirnal that due to stagnant water causing an overgrowth of bacteria that they were closing it. I'm not sure how I feel about that?
