It's a place you can get up close to the past, but also a peaceful spot to view the river and furnace locks, I especially recommend being here in autumn, watching sycamore leaves float down the river. Parking by the furnace isn't huge, but additional parking is just over the small bridge. There is plenty of interpretive signage to guide you, and ample picnic space to enjoy, but no facilities. We didn't even see a port-o-let. All the same, enjoy your drive and short hike!

IIt's mainly of interest if you're interested in the history of the area, but something you could combine with visiting nearby Haystack Mountain Park. Still, it's well maintained and has a nice parking area, with a number of highly informative signs around the area, leading you on a short walk from the furnace over to the dam where the piping for the steam turbine is still somewhat in place. There's a few picnic tables as well, if you're in the mood for a picnic. Altogether a nice little pleasant stop on the road.

"The moon is big and yellow And the stars are all a' glow…read moreFrom the bridge, I see reflections In the waters far below" (Dolly Parton) The Upper Sheffield Covered Bridge was built in 1999 as close to a stick-by-stick replacement (as close as modern engineering standards would allow) of the original 1832 bridge that was destroyed in a fire in 1994. Some materials salvaged from the original bridge were used for continuity. It's a nice example of "One Span Town Lattice Truss" open construction with a wood plank floor and wood siding painted grey. No vehicles are permitted on the 93-foot-long bridge that spans the Housatonic River. I read that the original 1832 bridge was the oldest covered bridge in Massachusetts and one of the oldest Town lattice truss bridges in the U. S. There's an information kiosk with vital information about the history and restoration of the bridge. There's a parking lot and a little park where you can access the bridge, and a hiking trail at the other end of the bridge, It's a very peaceful place to stop, take a stroll, enjoy the construction of the bridge and a nice water view at the park.

6/26/26: Staatsburgh can give many of the Newport mansions a run for their money…read more On the drive up to the mansion, you'll see a beautiful sculpture of Diana the huntress. We made reservations online. Upon entry, you'll check in and pay at the gift shop in the rear of the estate. Lindsay was very helpful. Inside the gift shop, there's wonderful items for serving tea and historical books on area mansions. Our wonderful docent was Faith. She was so passionate and highly knowledgeable of all the estate decor and family history. Think Faith is one of the best docents ever! The tour group starts out in a very low-keyed way. During that time, you're learning about the history of the estate in a fun way. Out of nowhere, the Gilded Age Opulence appears. YOU'RE WOWED! Unfortunately, Staatsburgh doesn't receive the accolades like the other well known area mansions. If you're going to see one estate in the area, make it Staatsburgh!

The Staastsburgh Estate grounds are simply beautiful, expansive and extremely well maintained. There is a smaller unpaved road that leads to the carriage house and around to several gardens and eventually up to the front entry way of the mansion. We didn't go inside as we had spent 40 minutes walking the grounds but plan to do so on a future visit.

Wow, what a monument. This structure is located in front of Castle Church in Canaan, and is to…read morehonor those Canaan has lost in military conflict. The main piece is a soldier standing above a pyramid of sorts, each side below containing a plaque and a small bench. Facing the brewery below is a plaque for those in WWI, then moving counter clockwise those who were in the Civil War, and finally a nod to the War of 1812. Behind the primary piece is a wall honoring those in more recent conflicts, including WWII, the Persian Gulf, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, and Panama. It's a very somber moment when you take in how many lives were impacted in a small Connecticut town, but also beautiful in its design and imposing stature.

The monument is capped by a statue known as "The Spirit of the American Doughboy", and apparently there are hundreds of these similar statues across the country. The monument shows a World War I infantryman marching forward.. He is well armed, holding a rifle in one hand and a grenade in the other. The statue is mounted on a very ornate multi-sided stone base, and embedded into the stone faces are a series of plaques honoring local soldiers who served in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, and World War One. Some of the inscriptions read: This Tablet Is Reverently Inscribed to the Memory Of Those Who Went From That Part Of The Town of Canaan Which Later Became North Canaan, And Who, With Valor and Patriotism, Defended the Flag of Our Country In The Colonial Wars The War of The Revolution The War of 1812 Although time has dimmed the record of their Names, their deeds are held in everlasting Remembrance 1861 - 1865 In Memory Of These Men of North Canaan Who Fought in the Civil War 1914-1918 Honor Roll In Honor Of Those Who Served In The World War

This library is small but mighty. There is a fine selection of popular, current books as well as…read morerandom titles you never knew you wanted to read before. Anything it doesn't have for it's lack of space can usually be found on the Connecticut Inter-Library loan system. The librarians (or the formal book depositorians) are all very friendly, willing to help, and organize some fun activities. Right now there's a month long contest to "blind date" a book (select a wrapped book only by a brief description and complete a review to enter), and there's an almost year long contest to read thirty books from forty different categories. Categories include your parent's favorite book, a thriller, and that book you were actually supposed to read in school. Goshen residents should follow the library on Facebook - events are frequent and varied. It was a lot of fun to meet Laura Bradford, author of Amish cozy mysteries, at the end of last year!
