I was looking up random landmarks on atlas obscura and I came across the Fork in the Road. So my sister and I took a road trip and there it was in its 31 foot steel glory. And believe it or not, this gigantic fork in the road is actually located on a fork in the road... We went when it had just snowed and it made it even shinier and grander.. I recommend reading the story online on how this giant fork came to be. The only down side to visiting this landmark is that there is no designated parking. We parked in front of some houses and then had to run across the street. So please look both ways! read more

I have been passing by this transportational landmark for years on end, but never stopped by to look at it up close. However, after coming back from my local Hannaford to Golden Wok Uber ride (as the driver), I decided I have to come and STOP here today. What a great thing I did! Much like Charley C said "(This is) five star humor (at it's best)." Although parking isn't great, where you have to park on the side of the road at a crossroads between Routes 199 and 308, the stuff you find out about this fork in the road can be interesting. I didn't do much research coming in, but had known about this place for so long. I remember when it first came in, it was built by what I thought I remembered hearing as a Bard (College) student. However, after looking around the sculpture, on the back of the fork, there are two newspaper articles about this sculpture. One was a comic and the other was a 2003 clipping from a newspaper talking about the history of the fork. Now, because of the parking, I never really had a chance to read the entire clipping and because it was higher up than my neck could properly read, I had trouble reading it. With the comic, the height of placement made it appear like the characters and commentary are smaller than reality and I couldn't quickly read that one either. (Whoever owns this sculpture, please set up a sculpture placard with these on it instead so they can be more properly read, because this just can't be.) I noticed there being only one "log"/wooden bench there. However, due to the availability of parking, it's tough to find a spot and still sit down on one of these benches (plus, the weather didn't permit doing so today.) I mean, I could have parked at the antiques store across the street. But the antiques store doesn't like people parking at their store, and you really shouldn't be parked near the Stop sign. But parking today, I found brush near the side of the road, that forced me to walk farther out (towards the stop sign before advancing up the hill and up closer to the sculpture going the opposite direction.) I didn't realize the amplitude of no brush at the side of the road prior to the fork from Route 308 when I walked up to the statue. It's a comical relief; something I mention to my Uber riders everytime we pass it (during daytime hours, that is.) I have to skip mentioning it at night due to it's inability to be seen (since there are little to no lights shining on it and the riders don't want to know about forks in the road as per those known to drivers on roadways.) So I think my thought is like "Really?" I guess I'll stop in sometime when there is alternative parking that's permissible to the area. read more
