White Crane Springs is a great place for a stroll or a picnic and unlike many community gardens, it is open to the public (i.e., no locked gates). Enter the garden via the end of Locksley Street (aka 6th Avenue) or the vacant lot (home to a pumpkin patch and Xmas tree lot) at 7th Ave and Lawton. There's always something interesting growing in members' garden plots plus a small redwood grove, picnic table and native plants area. The garden has a community work day at the beginning of every month, perfect for learning about what to grow or how to compost. Check the calendar on the bulletin board for exact times and dates. A bulletin board at the front gate has information on garden work days (open to everyone), garden membership and neighborhood events. If you're into eco-friendly buildings, check out the garden's Cob Tool Shed. White Crane Springs is a short walk from the Garden for the Environment at 7th Avenue and Lawton or the new hiking paths on Mt. Sutro. Hey, it's a free activity!

Glad the community garden made up for it. It's a small garden, but we still spent a good 20 minutes there, roaming around. There are two picnic tables close to the entrance, so feel free to bring a snack to enjoy (kind of wished the picnic tables were on the other side, where you'll have nice views of the city). Saw pumpkins, succulents, and other varieties of fruits, veggies, and unknown plants. Towards the back side of the garden are some really nice views of the city, especially on a clear blue sky day. I must have missed the roosters as a few reviewers mentioned them (or perhaps they went into hibernation for the winter). It wasn't overly crowded - just one or two other parties were there during our walk. Overall, it's a quaint little spot to take a walk or stop to have a bite. The higher elevation of the garden provides a lovely view of SF. Parking wasn't bad as we parked in front of McKinley Park - think it shouldn't take too long to find street parking as well. It's nice that this place is open to the public - don't go picking stuff out of the garden!

It's a small garden compromised of many different flowers, fruits, and vegetables. While walking through, you are sure to see beautiful sunflowers, roses, succulents, blackberries, tomatoes, limes, kale, and so much more! Your eyes will light up from the vast array of colorful beauty. The space is peaceful and I only encountered a few locals in the garden while I was there. In the back of the garden, there's a small shed that occupies chickens and livestock. If you are looking to rent a space to grow your own garden, the waitlist is quite long and could take up to a year for a space to become available. Some gardens are open which allows you to get up close and personal. I saw a photographer in the garden snapping all kinds of pictures. There are signs posted asking that you do not touch or steal any of the plants in the garden. However, a little smelling ain't never hurt nobody! Go ahead and smell those beautiful roses! There are two tables and a side bench where you can relax, have lunch, or simply just take in the view. Speaking of views, did I mention that this garden offers the most beautiful view of the city? It's located high on the hill, making it the perfect spot to capture the lovely city down below. There are a few parking spots located right in front and plenty of street parking available right next to the park. This garden is truly a breath of fresh air and the perfect place to clear your mind and to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy city.

While I did find one gardener walking his cat on a leash through the tiny greenhouse onsite, everyone's been full of humor and kindness. The garden's open for anyone to go visit and the plots are only $35 for a the whole year. And unlike a bunch of other community gardens that I looked into, I was able to get a space immediatley. An added bonus is it's a quick walk from Sloat garden store on Clement.

Being able to grab food, sit outside, and let kids explore makes it such a great concept. I know this is a volunteer-led effort, and it really shows how much care has gone into creating something special for the community. The stage, fairy garden, life-size chess board, and boat add so much character. To make the space even more family-friendly, I would love to see more open play options for toddlers and younger kids. Right now, when I bring my preschooler, she sometimes isn't quite sure what to engage with, so having a few more clearly defined, toddler-friendly play elements would make it even more inviting. Things like simple climbing structures, stepping logs, sensory play elements, large rocks to climb on, a mud kitchen, or even a small area with rotating toys would go a long way. I think adding a few more toddler/preschool friendly open play areas could also bring in more families on weekends and support the surrounding businesses even more. If parents knew this was a reliable spot where their kids could play and hang out for a couple of hours while they eat, it could really become a go-to destination--especially since there aren't any outdoor, kid-friendly dining spaces nearby. I know this is a volunteer-led initiative, so I completely understand there may be budget considerations, but even a few simple, low-cost additions (like adding a mud kitchen) could make a big impact to bring more families to your space. Would love to know how people can get involved or share ideas if there are ways for the community to contribute. Overall, such a great addition to the community--we really appreciate all the effort behind it and look forward to seeing it continue to grow.

Lots of tummy clenched emotion during those times. But like the cycle of native plants, when something is out of place... it won't flourish or grow as it should. It can't adapt or find it's rhythm with the surrounding topography. Understanding native plants might actually help with your broader understanding of life. It did for me. =)

Only 2500 sq ft of space but it is attractively planted and gives the illusion of a larger area. Not used by many people.
