That crusty smell of stale beer and ancient…read morecigarette smoke, seats that have seen a thousand butts and weird memorabilia on the walls as far as the eye can see. The Stump ticked every one of these all-important 'old man pub' boxes. We came here twice during our Port Fairy weekend getaway. Once was for an extremely important post-drive pint, and the second was for Friday night drinks. On Friday night The Stump (also called The Caledonian Inn) has live music and I can assure you they are playing all the classics - Fleetwood Mac, Bon Jovi - all the songs you inexplicably know all the words to. Beers on tap are fairly simple, with the most 'crafty' being Fat Yak, but you really shouldn't be drinking that fancy beer in a pub as classic as The Stump. The beer is cold and that's all that matters. While we didn't dine here, the menu looked exactly as you can imagine with the addition of a few variants of the parma. There is also a MAGNIFICENT beer garden as well as seats out the front for people watching. The Stump is by far the best pub in Port Fairy, which is probably why it's been around for so damn long!

I spent a good amount of time on the weekends just hanging out in front at their out door seating talking with friends and coworkers. It was really an inviting and friendly restaurant/bar (What for some strange reason they call a hotel but they have no rooms to let.). They had live music many days and although I hadn't heard of any of the bands being from the U.S. I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere. I learned more about cricket here than I ever though I would want to know. It's still such a strange game to me haha. The rest of the down town area of Port Fairy is a short walk away, and the beach is not but a block or two further. I hope the Stump is around still on my next trip to Port Fairy.

The place wows you when you walk in. Richard met us and took us for a small tour of the place. The front room has tea, coffee and sugar cookies through the day. The other great room has a gas fireplace and books and lots of couches and chairs. The room was nice with a comfortable bed. The honor bar are stocked nicely and the prices were reasonable. The wifi worked but was a bit slow at times and would drop out sometimes but then again, why are you there -- to relax. A nice walk down the boardwalk gets you to some trails (lighthouse, beach).

There are only 11 rooms - two of which are riverfront views - we had one of these which though small, was charmingly decorated, looking out onto the marina. You enter the unassuming property through a lavender lined garden (where there are two spa guest rooms) which opens to a front paved courtyard. The main entrance to the house has a sweeping staircase up to the five air conditioned bedrooms,; we had a small minibar fridge and ensuite shower with mini toiletries. The ground floor has a breakfast room opening onto the porch which overlooks the river and a large, beautifully appointed sitting room for lazy afternoons where you could curl up with the paper or a book. The manageress was very welcoming and helpful. Wandering around the town includes a walk round the seafront island, the old town, complete with Victorian architecture and a choice of shops and restaurants (take away food to casual dining.) We visited in late March with variable weather, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.
