The place wows you when you walk in. Richard met us and took us for a small tour of the place. The front room has tea, coffee and sugar cookies through the day. The other great room has a gas fireplace and books and lots of couches and chairs. The room was nice with a comfortable bed. The honor bar are stocked nicely and the prices were reasonable. The wifi worked but was a bit slow at times and would drop out sometimes but then again, why are you there -- to relax. A nice walk down the boardwalk gets you to some trails (lighthouse, beach).

There are only 11 rooms - two of which are riverfront views - we had one of these which though small, was charmingly decorated, looking out onto the marina. You enter the unassuming property through a lavender lined garden (where there are two spa guest rooms) which opens to a front paved courtyard. The main entrance to the house has a sweeping staircase up to the five air conditioned bedrooms,; we had a small minibar fridge and ensuite shower with mini toiletries. The ground floor has a breakfast room opening onto the porch which overlooks the river and a large, beautifully appointed sitting room for lazy afternoons where you could curl up with the paper or a book. The manageress was very welcoming and helpful. Wandering around the town includes a walk round the seafront island, the old town, complete with Victorian architecture and a choice of shops and restaurants (take away food to casual dining.) We visited in late March with variable weather, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

"Not even remotely," I said, with an evil grin. It might have been the lure of Alpacas that led me to book a two-night stay at Clonmara Cottages, but it was the home-like comforts that made our stay a stand-out of our drive along the Great Ocean Road. Owned by a husband and wife duo, this property of 5 cottages is also home to a small tea room and is just on the cusp of Port Fairy's main street. It feels like you've walked into an English country cottage with a quaint garden, a chook pen and a life-size chess board. Our studio had a bathroom almost as large as the bedroom itself with a spa. There's a comfortable double bed, a kitchenette and electric fireplace to keep you toasty warm during the Winter nights. A continental breakfast was offered each morning and included in our rate as well as Wi-Fi. Pets are welcome (if only I'd bought along our furball) and if you've left Rover at home make sure you introduce yourself to the owner's Hungarian Puli, Sam. He's a charmer and sure to melt your heart with his request for pats. With no hustle and bustle of city-life, a stay at Clonmara is not only a chance to feed Alpacas each morning, but a real way to unplug and enjoy life in the slow lane. My only regret is not staying longer and may or may not have asked as we left, "Can't we just stay and help them run the place?"

A delightful place for a scone!…read more We passed through from Cape Bridgewater at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon hoping for a scone with jam and cream. Clonmara did not disappoint! With not only a vast array of different scones but a number of other afternoon tea delights and a long list of loose leaf teas, it was exactly what we were after. The service was excellent and genuine with a lovely family feel. We didn't stay at the B&B so can't comment but the afternoon tea comes highly recommended!
