Total Wine is a brand that I like and always have high expectations of regarding their selection. If you want to find a new bev to love, looking for a gift for an event host or even a cigar to relax with - they've got it covered. It's been a while since I've had questions, but love that their team is well-versed in what's available and are eager to assist if needed. When I visited it was packed! They had 3-4 lanes open checking people out and that really made all of the difference when it came to my checkout time. He wasn't even in line with me--he was simply browsing in another part of the store while I checked out. As I was paying, an older white employee came up and told me I couldn't purchase my items unless my husband showed his ID. I found this completely unreasonable. The store's policy says customers who appear under 30 will be asked for ID, yet my husband wasn't even making the purchase. The whole interaction felt unnecessary, embarrassing, and unprofessional. It left me wondering whether we were treated differently because of our race. Regardless, this is not good customer service, and the way the situation was handled made us feel unwelcome.
