Clover Club is a trendy establishment; they're known for their bespoke cocktails. I ordered the Clover Club cocktail, and I enjoyed it because I love gin and egg whites. Their happy hour food menu is kind of small; but I did get olives, crisps, and half off oysters. I liked the crisps because they were fried in duck fat, and they had truffle aioli. I also ordered deviled eggs; my favorite was the bacon jam one. Their grilled octopus was good, and the tomato was flavored well. I've been here a few time since discovering this place. Service is a little slow even when it's not busy, and it does get crowded around dinner time. It's not a big space so it's gets a little cramped especially at 2-seated tables as they are very close to each other but i think small bars like that have its own charm. In the summer they have outdoor sitting and seasonal drinks (which unfortunately I missed on as I didn't try it right away and came back in the fall). What a lovely date night spot! We came here on a weeknight and the space is dark and intimate. It was 9pm and I was excited that their kitchen is open until 11pm, so yay for that. We ordered a Clover Manhattan ($20) for her and a Bonfire Old Fashioned ($21) for him. Our drinks took over 15 minutes to arrive. When we asked about them, they said that they may have forgotten to put our drink orders in. When the drinks did come, they were delicious cocktails though. I loved that the Manhattan came with a side of aged Gouda, which was my favorite. The drinks are strong, which I liked as well. We also ordered some food which came out soon after. We had the Mac and Cheese with Smoked Bacon ($16) and Buttermilk Flatbread "Hand"wiches ($17). The Mac and cheese was yummy but I wished they used a different type of pasta. I did enjoy the handwiches, which came with two. I got one chicken and one steak and liked how they're on a scallion-like bread. This also came with crisps that completed the meal. Earthy and herbal with some bright citrus to help balance everything out. This is a drink I would order time and again. I highly recommend, even if bourbon is not your preferred spirit. My sister ordered the signature Clover Club, mom a Cosmopolitan, my friend a beer, and since I had confidence in the bartender I requested a Sidecar. It's hard to find a good Sidecar outside of New Orleans. I tried a sip of the Cosmo & Clover Club. Both were delicious and perfectly balanced. My Sidecar did not disappoint. It was perfection in a glass! We also ordered food: Mac & Cheese, Steak Frites, and Roasted beet salad. While the emphasis here is on the cocktails, the food was just as fantastic. Very cozy dinner-date spot on Smith, a little pricy but nothing too crazy! I was craving some steak and was planning on heading over to Gage & Tollner but it was both PACKED & LOUD this past Monday night. Our party of 3 was quickly seated, most folks were seated outside but we nabbed a nice spot by the open patio doors to get that cool evening breeze. Our table ordered the Steak Frites (medium), Chicken Handwiches, & Stuffed Squash, along with a few drinks. Of the items I tried, here are some thoughts: - Steak frites: really tender and enjoyable! I usually go for medium rare but this was perfect and not overdone. The fries were nicely crisped and the (unexpected) salad rounded out the meal nicely - Handwiches: ordered chicken but came out as steak on very tasty pita bread and this was very enjoyable! Not more than pure steak but still solid and would be good for lunch. Also came with a side of potato chips - Sweet Pea mocktail: super refreshing! I love drinks with crushed ice and this was fantastic. Overall, the noise level was good for catching up with friends/family over dinner and I would not say no to coming back again! So I really love this place, as I have been coming here to work, relax, dine, and just meet up with friends at times. The staff Monday - Thursdays are absolutely lovely! They are hands down, some of my favorite waitstaff in Brooklyn. They are very nice and actually make you feel comfortable and wanted as a patron - especially if you are a regular. Heck, they even make sure to say hello if they ever see you randomly walking down the street. That's just how they are. Truly lovely people. However, this past Friday, I encountered staff that were the complete opposite. Upon inquiring about a table outside when I arrived, there was not even a smile or feeling that I was being welcomed back - I should have taken this as a sign. I am seated outside, in my usual spot, and of course the waitress eventually comes to take my order. Again, no smile, no pleasant demeanor. She just looked unamused, uninterested, and not generally seeming like a nice person. Eventually, when I finish my drink and she had come to check on me, I mentioned I had finished, but that I would likely just stay for a few minutes before getting my check to leave. Without me even asking, she hands me the check. I thought it was so rude - I was actually really upset by this, but didn't show it. I ask her, would it be ok if I could stay for a few moments, as I had NOT asked for my check yet. She tells me "It's a Friday night, and they need the tables." Mind you, there was no one waiting on my particular table. After she forces the check on me, she stands there waiting for my payment. I pay, get up, and she didn't even try to stop me from leaving. I was truly appalled. I go to busy places all the time, I have never had someone hand me check without me asking for it like this. It's like you are being forced to sign your check and leave. Even if others would have needed a table, I, like every other restaurant patron, can wait, put my name on a waitlist, come back...like regular people do. There is never a need to make your patrons feel uncomfortable and force them to leave. It's extremely rude. I love this place, but I do not recommend going on a Friday night, unless you are looking to be upset. read more

There is never a time I went to Clover Club and did not have a great time. I think this is my 1st review on Google, although I have been here a dozen times. This place has not changed in going down, quite the contrary. You can also tell since many of the staff have been here quite a long time and they seem happy. My 2 go-to peeps here is Will and Mauricio! Not saying everyone else is not good. These 2 have been very consistent in offering menu items they believe is great. All the bartenders including Mauricio are mixologists. These guys know how to mix drinks. They have bottle there I never heard of but are incorporated into drinks for specific taste effects. Most of the time I usually order the Steak over toast, the Brussels Sprouts, and the homemade chips. I took a chance this time to order a burger and buttermilk fried chicken. Everything is fresh and delish! They have a nice happy hour menu if you arrive early, but skip anything. I've made many clover clubs in my life and I wanted to try it at the bar that is named after it. The clover club cocktail is a drink that was created in Philadelphia even before Prohibition. This bar was ranked one of the top bars in the world and is the sister bar to another top bar Leyenda across the street. My first drink was the clover club ($16) which I had to order because it's their namesake drink. It was delicious, easy to drink, and the egg white added a nice texture. I asked the bartender how many he makes a night and he couldn't give me a number and said, "A lot." My second drink was the pineapple smash ($15) which was a sweeter drink from the pineapple. I noticed that they add the green chartreuse as a float on top versus in the drink and the bartender said it makes the drink more rich. They also have happy hour Monday through Friday 4-6pm along with a large menu selection for dinner. An odd review for me to write. I stumbled in, for one thing. I'd tried to visit a friend. Their absence - through no fault of theirs - left me in the wind in Brooklyn. Why not Clover Club? I'd heard good things. The craft cocktail menu isn't crafted for off days. Not a flaw. Just a function of how they are written: to spark curiosity, provoke questions, get you thinking about why this particular name or why that unfamiliar ingredient. To delight you, ideally. I found myself in front of an obviously brilliant, effortful menu, and felt abruptly guilty that I didn't have the energy to engage with it. I ordered a daiquiri variation. Anything with autumn vibes. I say 'ordered', but what came out was mumbled, a reflection my night thus far. After a short wait, the bartender gave me a sharp nod. "Your daiquiri is on its way." Something probably showed on my face. "Sir?" he prompted. "I, uh, I asked for a daiquiri variation, with maybe Fall-ish flavors?" I replied, before I could stop myself. There's something cringeworthy about "um actually"-ing a bartender. You want to curl up and disappear, to an extent. I've been behind the stick as well, and I hate it when that happens to me. Worse, I suspected that perhaps my daiquiri was already built, but just hadn't been shaken yet. -You shouldn't have mumbled, earlier- I thought to myself. -So, what, if the man thinks you've ordered a daiquiri? A daiquiri would be perfectly serviceable. Well within the bounds of what you deserve.- What I said was: "Sorry for the inconvenience. I must have miscommunicated." He laughed, an effortless absolution. I couldn't help but be charmed. "Listen," he said, his tone all cheek. "Rum is my favorite spirit; I want you to have a good time with your drink. Don't worry about it." Just like that, I was no longer a stranger who had walked in out of the cold. I was a guest, and felt it. What I got, I was told, was a cocktail called the Sugarhill Gang. A drink passed down from Brian Miller, to Ryan Liloia, to my bartender himself. When I asked for his name, he affected embarrassment that he'd neglected to give his own name in service of honoring his mentors. Again, I was charmed. In a bar scene where sharing social media handles often takes center stage, the interaction felt touchingly grounded and sincere. As an aside to the sappy stuff: the drink tasted heavenly. If you've ever pondered if rum, Calvados, and orgeat would get along, ponder no longer! What was meant to be a quick stop turned into two joyful hours at Clover Club, chatting at the bar, sampling the menu, and leaning fully into my impromptu night out. Andrew (for that was the gentleman's name) kept the conversation lively, bouncing from the Mpemba Effect to how heat dispersed differently in oil vs. water. He recommended that I check out For the King II on Steam, and without missing a beat also walked me through the backstory behind why a more spirit-forward Manhattan demands a side of aged Gouda (no spoilers - ask for the details yourself; it's worth it!). At some point in the night, I asked Andrew if I'd gotten the lineage of the Sugarhill Gang correct, showing him notes I'd taken on my phone. My ears are fluent in everything except names, it turns out. Not only had I gotten all the names wrong, what I'd heard didn't even have the right number of syllables. "May I?" he asked, judgment-free. Deft fingers danced across the screen to set me straight. The Hot Pearl Diver, a rich, buttery delight, wrapped up my night perfectly. It's a must-try if it's on the menu - it's rare enough to see a good tiki classic in a non-tiki bar. Seeing one reimagined as a Hot Toddy is truly a treat. The cocktail expertise of the Clover Club staff is oft-mentioned, but it's the warmth and humanity accompanying it that made my visit exceptional, even for a first-timer. Though I've spotlighted one bartender, everyone I encountered, from the the hosts to the barback to the server to an engaging cameo by co-owner Christine checking in on her staff, was generous with their time in making me feel welcome. Every seat at the bar was taken and nearly every table was also taken indoors. The waiting list was about 30ish minutes so I took a table outdoors. I chose a very strong drink or what we learned is I'm a wimp, but delicious. She gave me a side of cheese to pair with my drink which was very nice and very handy given my newly discovered weakness. My colleague ordered some food and quite a few drinks. To be honest the crowed didn't let up. It's probably a great place to meet people and hang out if you're local. Judge/Clover Club owner Julie Reiner mixed a Clover Club cocktail on the show - it looked delicious so of course it's the first cocktail that I ordered. The drink was luscious and well-balanced, like drinking a raspberry botanical garden! The steak appetizer was delicious and cooked to perfection. I finished the experience with their spin on a Negroni using mushroom-infused Campari. Very tasty, and a serious cocktail that warranted slow sipping. Friendly, knowledgeable bartenders.
