Ate at this cafe before we headed out of town home. We were pleasantly surprised to find a band…read moreplaying blues when we arrived. Before we could enter the restaurant, however, we had to wade through all the smokers littering the entrance. Cough! We sat down at a table we chose along the perimeter across from the band. I wish I knew the name of the band, but it was a 3 piece band with a female singer, her son on the guitar, and another guy playing drums. They were good. She sang a song she wrote called the Delta. Great lyrics! My husband and I both ordered the French toast with a hash brown on the side. It took forever and honestly, I was getting a little concerned about all the people who kept coming in and out from outside and into what seemed the kitchen area. Our food arrived and it had great presentation and generous portions. Real French bread used! It was very good! After our meal, the female band leader as well as the owner of the restaurant came over to chat. Very friendly and nice conversation with all. Sadly, when we arrived home from our long drive, let's just say, the food did not sit well in our stomach. It was the only meal we had before arriving home. Another restaurant meal I have to pray was prepared with love.

First let me say that The Blue Levee is worth the drive. My wife and I along with our road tripping…read moredining partners drove almost 2 hours to give The Blue Levee a try. It did not disappoint. We arrived about 12:10 and there were lots of pickups in the parking lot which is always a good indicator of good food. The sign out front said " we cook with love and bacon grease". There was no turning back after reading that sign. They have a daily lunch buffet or you can order off the menu. Three of us had the fried chicken which was crispy and seasoned like grandma's. One had the Poppy Seed chicken which they said was good and creamy over rice. Rice with gravy that was OK. The veggie offerings were green beans( cooked with bacon grease), home cooked cabbage( did I mention bacon grease), yams( sweet and seasoned). The veggies were definitely cooked with that " love and bacon grease". Now, the fried chicken. It was currently swimming in the deep fryer as we got our other offering and headed to our booth. One of the amazingly, sweet ladies brought us a platter of "right out of the fryer" chicken that was just about as good as I've had. The coup de gras was the Southern corn bread. One of the ladies serving our plates(large platters) stated that she wasn't bragging but the corn bread was pretty good. That was an understatement. Her cornbread was pure perfection. Easily would make the cornbread hall of fame and any grandma proud to claim as her own. This was down home soul food. Food was hot and tasty, the tea was sweet(as it should be), and the service was amazing. These ladies were sweeter than the tea and very attentive. The inside decor reminds you that you are in the Mississippi Delta, home of the Blues. I wouldn't have it any other way. We will be back. It was definitely worth the drive.
