It's been more than a few years since I was at Red's Juke Joint, but the most important thing about my visit was that a young legend was leading a great band. He looked so young, and HONESTLY, I'd never heard talent like that!!! (Sorry Joe Bonamassa, you're my bud, but, this is THE dude!). I spent the evening talking to a wonderful lady beside me, and she told me after I couldn't stop raving about the guitarist/singer that he was her 15 yr old son. I told her that I knew he was to be big....no pun...and I'd be watching. I have kept my word. I am so sorry to say that his mom, Princess Pride, has passed within the last couple of years I've seen this young man perform at the Ryman, opening for Buddy Guy (What a dream!!), and in Nashville another time where my hubs gave up his seat and I shared the table and night with Thornetta Davis (Detroit's Queen of Blues~~check her out on your fave search engine). We also recently traveled to Henderson, KY to see Kingfish at the blue festival. I've been to Ground Zero, but my favorite place in the 626 is at Red's, thanks to Kingfish and his Ma'. read more

This is a real juke joint. Serves only beer out of a cooler, cash only. The vibe, the characters you'll meet, and the music and musicians, and Red himself, we're an incredible experience. First night I saw a local guy, who according to locals plays in church and they weren't aware of as a guitar player, absolutely rip it up. This guy played a borrowed right handed guitar upside down, not restrung, and absolutely killed. Best guitar player I've ever seen. Next visit got to meet and hear Watermelon Slim tell stories, sing a couple songs and play the harmonica. What a treat. This place is the most derelict looking place I've ever walked inside of. The place looks like it could collapse, there is broken stuff and piles of misc. crap in the corners and the bathrooms are about to fall off the back of the building... an architects and Fire Marshall's nightmare. Don't change a thing Red! There are a couple of rows of chairs lined up on 1 side of performing area - no stage just a carpet on the floor - the other side has about 3 small tables and a row of stools. The bar has about 10 crammed short stools in front of it. I imagine it is very claustrophobic when full. When the band started, I was 1 of 9 people there, 18 when I left. I saw a younger blues musician out of Nashville named Robert Eskew play some amazing Blues 3 feet in front of me. Red was behind me tending bar shouting out random things, the lights were off with a few orange stage lights giving a weird glow to the room, random stuff on the walls, and plastic sheets for a ceiling. One of the most surreal and wonderfully authentic nights I've ever experienced. A bridge to another time and culture. It was a $10 cover and 22oz beer bottles were $4 and they only sell beer, set ups for sale if you bring your own liquor. read more

Quite possibly the coolest bar I have ever stepped foot in. For 7$ I got to see Bilbo Walker jamming for hours. If you are looking for a generic music venue like the house of blues or Hard Rock Cafe, Reds is not your place. If you went to check out serious blues music with a true mississippi juke joint feel, reds is certainly the place you want to check out. If you want to see what the place is all about just buy the film "we juke up in here" off of amazon. Can't wait till the next time I visit to grab some pecan smoke BBQ from out front, dink a few lazy magnolia brown ales, listen to some great music and do a few shots of whiskey with Red. I've only visited Clarksdale once, and it started as a one night stay...which then became a 2 night visit...and after making some friends (locals and tourists) I ended up staying a 3rd night so I could check out T-Model Ford (RIP T!!!). I am glad I did. Red is great as long as you're not being an ass or being cheap. The cover is cheap, but that keeps the place afloat so bring some singles if they pass the hat. Beer is cheap, but you can also bring a bottle and get a "set up", which is just another way for saying soda and a cup of ice...or maybe just a cup...I had so much fun but it's a bit of a haze. Arguably this is the type of place why you visit Mississippi. I fell in love with the town, the state, the people and Red's is a large part of that. I would stay at the Shack-Up in or the Riverside Motel (very close to Red's) or upstairs at Ground Zero but I would really try and be there for a weekend or Blues festival. Maybe if your nice Red will make you some BBQ. Definitely offer him some cash. Red is the man. Oh, unless things have changed the bathroom there is no highlight...best if you can avoid it... read more

Again. Red's is the Real Deal. Spent 2 weeks in March in MS and Red's was the highlight joint. Kingfish is a National Treasure and a Headliner in the making. Baltimore's Woody Jones joined him on 2 cuts that night. They had plenty of food that night at Red's and the band was smokin. Was so happy to later see Kingfish on Luke Cage. We were there on Saturday when Lucious Spiller performed. It was by far the best live blues performance I have ever experienced! He was amazing, funny and very engaging! He played for 4 hours and it seemed to have flown by so quickly! If you are looking for Vegas style House of Blues, this is not it! My wife and I stopped here on Red's birthday / Christmas party and we had a blast ( the asian couple from California!). No matter who you are or where you come from, everyone at Red's becomes part of the family and blues party. From out of towners to locals, everyone was super friendly cool. Oh, what a great evening at Red's. We went on Sunday night so not much else open in Clarksdale -I'm so glad or we may have missed it! This little juke-joint is small, which adds to the welcoming feeling we got when we went in. Was in the house on 6/4/2016. Had a local band playing and they were very good. They really enjoyed what they were doing and believe me it wasn't for the money. It was from the soul! I see some of the other reviews that mention the price of cover and drinks, REALLY! The house and the musicians have to make it somehow. Red is the perfect host. Walked in the door and he gave me and my lady his own personal chair rather than have us go set in the far corner. Everyone was totally cool. The BBQ outside was well worth the $30 I paid for it and that included a gracious tip. I'm sure the crowds vary as well as the music but it's not any different than the big city bars.
