You can even place bets with OTB (off-track betting). We first stopped in just to check it out, and back then they had the menu up on a chalkboard--kinda loved that. But this time, that was gone and we got a menu from the bar. I was hoping for a draft beer, but it wasn't clear if the taps were working, so I went with a few bottles of Labatt's Blue instead. My husband kept it simple with some Diet Cokes (or maybe Pepsi--wasn't totally sure). There was only one bartender holding it down. She took our order, brought out our drinks at the bar, and served up the food. She's a rockstar! That said, since she was solo, finished plates and baskets just kind of piled up at one table. She let us know someone else was coming in at 7 p.m.--it was only 4 p.m. when we were there, so she was clearly in for a long shift. Food-wise, the mozzarella sticks hit the spot, cheeses and a nice breading in them and came with marinara. The wings? Fried hard (not breaded), with medium buffalo sauce. Honestly, they weren't all that saucy and seemed a little overcooked. Next time I'd ask for extra sauce and for them not to overdo it. Not terrible, just not the best I've had. A fun little quirk: if you open a tab, they stash your card in an old-school Rolodex. Just give them your name when you want to close out. Yes you get your card back. Eastman students, art purveyors, kickball teams, and many many more groups have found an alcohol & popcorn filled oasis in Salinger's. I went this past weekend and enjoyed a quieter atmosphere on Friday around 8:30pm. My double vodka soda was $5ish, and my partner and I grabbed a table and settled in. We enjoyed watching folks play games (pool, basketball, skee ball, and many many more all available here), and our beverages before moving on for the evening. The bartenders are used to high volume and take care of everyone at the bar quickly. It can get pretty busy in the later hours of the night, after concerts, and on weekends, but it is always homey feeling and a great way to start or end the night. All of the best things about dive bars come together at Sal's, and I can't wait for my next trip!

For years, I had no issues--until one of the security guards, an older light-skinned man with dreadlocks who has worked there forever, began targeting me for no reason. On multiple occasions he acted aggressive and confrontational toward me, even though I never raised my voice or reacted negatively. The last incident was the worst. He disrespected me in a way no customer should ever experience, threatened to "f** me up,"* and had me banned despite the fact that I never did anything to him. His hostility seems to stem from the fact that he doesn't like someone I happen to associate with--someone who also never disrespected him. What makes this even more concerning is that the owner appears to allow this type of behavior. I've seen this guard act out for years, and instead of correcting it, it feels like it's been encouraged. Many people I know have had negative experiences at this bar, and some have even lost their lives due to the environment created when drug activity is allowed inside. I've spent thousands of dollars here over the last 17 years, and never have I been disrespected the way I was by someone who is supposed to ensure customer safety. I considered speaking to the owner directly, but based on what I've witnessed, I truly believe she condones this behavior from her staff. After nearly two decades of loyalty, I can confidently say I will never return.

After a couple of false starts, we ended up at the Tryon Tavern, and the kitchen was still open as well. They have a moderate sized food menu. The guy ordered wings with a spicy Korean barbeque. He didn't say much, but he was busy eating, so I assume they were good! We shared some mozzarella sticks, which were also solid - not home made, I don't think, but hot and melty, so, again, everybody was happy. I saw that you could get any burger made with either chicken or a veggie patty for no extra charge (yay!), so had the Late Riser with a veggie patty. Again, I'm pretty sure it was a Morning Star spicy black bean patty, but I like those, and it tasted great with eggs, guacamole, cheese, and chipotle mayo. There was a little spice from the mayo and the bean burger. I really liked it. The "side" of garlic parm fries was huge! They had a good ratio of topping to fries. Getting our food took a bit longer than expected, but we assumed that since it was late on a holiday, there were probably not many people working that night. All in all, a pretty good experience.
