Missing Lux at 8:42am on a Tuesday morning, and writing this review to ease the pain! I haven't been to Lux since the pandemic started, and honestly don't think I had been at all this year prior to that either. Which is a SHAME, because Lux is a special place. Where else can you eat midnight bagels to accompany your vodka soda? Where else can you get overly frustrated at the "get the circle onto the post" game outside? The answer is NOWHERE. Lux has a special vibe about it that is welcoming, inclusive, divey and strange all at the same time. The South Wedge location is perfect and there's usually ample street parking if you're DD-ing or planning to leave your car. I can't wait to get back here post-pandemic and enjoy a game with friends and a seat out on the patio. read more

Lux is a different experience every night depending on what is going and who is DJ. Some things stay the same regardless of when you go: great vibes, quick bar service, cheap drinks, and a long bathroom line. Definitely more a hole in the wall in terms of charm, but you'll have a good night there regardless. read more

Reviewing again, because it just gets worse and worse. Management obviously doesn't give a fuck, I haven't seen them show concern or respond to a single review. Before I actually bring any of this up at a city council meeting, here's why this place needs a change of management, or just to be shut down. -Bartender refused to serve my friend, said TO HIS FACE that "you look really douchey", and had a horrible attitude the entire time. Bar was practically empty. She had no reason to be acting like that and that was probably the rudest bartender experience I've ever had. Told another bartender about it, he apologized, I also mentioned this in my first review, and yet she's been here every time I've been back. -Another bartender yelled as loud as humanly possible in my face (I'm hard of hearing and it's a loud bar) when I didn't hear what he said. Appreciate you saying it louder bud, but he was clearly extremely annoyed with me. He had some sort of hat on, and angrily yelled "YEAH, THIS HAT ISN'T A PSYCHIC HAT". Sorry someone shat in your cornflakes, dude. -Just about every month, I hear about someone's drink getting spiked. They either don't give a shit about blacklisting these scumbags, or just don't care that it's happening in the first place out of fear of losing business. They try to cover it up every time it happens. -Behavior of the patrons is extremely judgy, rude, and uncomfortable. Very old men hitting on younger women. Creeps everywhere. People looking to start a fight. -Almost always unclean inside and out The only benefit is the fact that it's cheap. I've been a loyal customer at this establishment for nearly 20 years and never expected to experience what I did. For years, I had no issues--until one of the security guards, an older light-skinned man with dreadlocks who has worked there forever, began targeting me for no reason. On multiple occasions he acted aggressive and confrontational toward me, even though I never raised my voice or reacted negatively. The last incident was the worst. He disrespected me in a way no customer should ever experience, threatened to "f** me up,"* and had me banned despite the fact that I never did anything to him. His hostility seems to stem from the fact that he doesn't like someone I happen to associate with--someone who also never disrespected him. What makes this even more concerning is that the owner appears to allow this type of behavior. I've seen this guard act out for years, and instead of correcting it, it feels like it's been encouraged. Many people I know have had negative experiences at this bar, and some have even lost their lives due to the environment created when drug activity is allowed inside. I've spent thousands of dollars here over the last 17 years, and never have I been disrespected the way I was by someone who is supposed to ensure customer safety. I considered speaking to the owner directly, but based on what I've witnessed, I truly believe she condones this behavior from her staff. The vibe here just isn't the same as it was 10+ years ago. Full of college age kids now. The age mix isn't the same. Overall different energy than what I recall, and hoped to return to. Also, I wish they had a better spot for karoake. You're just in the middle of the place / next to where you enter the bar, and people have to walk around you. My friend brought a group of us here because she wanted to dance, and I agree the music was good. There were wayyy too many people in that tiny place; you can't even move. They just keep shoveling people in as long as you have $5 and an ID. It had to have surpassed the safety limit. The one fruity worker was rude asf when he was trying to get by me when a simple excuse me would have sufficed, and I know he wouldn't be talking to a man like that. Everyone else was nice though! Awesome place I mean it's not like your every day bar. More of a hole in the wall kind of place with great dive bar vibes. The bar is not for the weak, you may see one of Rochester's local freaks. Always catching good music on Fridays as well. Clearly Epic didn't know what they were getting into (reviewed 3 separate times) and expected some steakhouse kind of treatment. I almost feel that they announce themselves when they enter Lux. Sometimes especially here, if you have a bad attitude coming in.., the bartenders or staff aren't just going to let you walk on them as other places do. With that being said, the staff is awesome! They are rapid when it comes to drinks on busy nights and always are nice / receptive. It's a younger bar sometimes but the bouncers are always on their game. 10/10 recommendation if you are looking for a busy night Friday / Saturday. This is a black diamond of coolness located in Rochester that reminds me of a bar closer to home. People seem to be here to have a good time and are not overly concerned with impressing others or Keeping up with anyone else, which is refreshing in most all situations. The vibe is chill, laid back, and carfree with a mild variety of music playing. Lux has a very ecletic and interesting interior to say the least. The Bar is extra crazy with all kinds of bizzare things on display you would have to see for yourself. I think it looks really bad ass and appears to have been collected over time. The art on the walls and around Lux is for sale, changes every month and is pretty bad ass and one of a kind. The interior also includes a table with actual legs (fake human legs of course) coming out from under it, bathrooms with black walls & chalk writings and drawings all over the walls, and a cool outside smoking area for "All" that includes a dick chair...yes a dick chair. Divey, funky, full of a whole cast of characters. It's a great place for fun, laughter and people watching. Add to that the fact that it has a nice outdoor patio and reasonably priced drinks, it makes it one of the best bars to be in when you're in the South Wedge. Every time I drink the porta potty water they try to stop me. I'm just trying to help. All in all the drinks are very good but the water in the bathroom is NOT good!! Lux is a cool neighborhood bar for those who live, work and play in the Southwedge. I've been to Lux a few times and each time has been welcoming and fun. Unlike a lot of other bars around town, Lux seems to be very down to earth. Drinks are good and they even offer a few specialty drinks which are unique and cool. I recently attended a surprise birthday party here and had a blast. The location was perfect for the party size and Lux appeared to be a gracious host. If it is your first time going be advised that the decor is a little raunchy or provocative. Take it in jest and know that it only adds to the playful atmosphere. Lux is not a bar that I would typically frequent, but if it's your cup of tea, then it would be an 'A-ok' choice for a casual night. read more

So, apparently, I'm the Duke of Lux. Having earned this achievement, I feel as though I should have some superior wisdom about this establishment at 666 South Ave. I don't. In fact, my thoughts on Lux mirror those on the Yankees or that blonde girl in my 11th grade English class: "don't hate me because I'm popular." Lux is really a one-of-a-kind place in Rochester. In Portland, Oregon or New York, this place might come across as cliché, but here in the 585, Lux is an original. A haven from the d-bagery common in so many other bars. No televisions, so you actually have to enjoy the music and, you know, talk to people. Where Lux really shines, of course, is in its specials and theme nights. Pretty much, any night has a theme that makes me say "hey, we should go to Lux tonight for x night." $1 burgers and cheap buckets on Sundays. Arts and crafts Monday. Trivia Tuesday. $3 wheel of drinks Wednesday. (Where you totally could win a pitcher of locally-brewed Kind IPA for $3... or you might get a cheeseburger shot) And so on. As someone who enjoys going out, it's nice to be able to have a good night without making my bank account cry. You can never go wrong with a Pabstsmear. A shot of whatever and a PBR for $3? Heck yes. In fact, I've even been know to go to Lux and get a couple of these while I'm out with my friends at other South Ave bars. In fact, these good times are already so well-known, it's no wonder so many people like Lux.... and maybe why some people do not. Namely, two of my best friends with whom I share judgement on most other things. They've grown up in the Rochester area and hate how Lux has become too crowded, too cliché, and too electic/hipster/goth/whathaveyou. Does it suck to sometimes wait 10 minutes to get a drink? Wouldn't it be cool to go back to before Lux got so popular? Maybe, but so what? The drinks are worth the wait and it's crowded because it's a good time. Lux is great! Attracts a friendly alternative/hipster crowd of people who are welcoming to regulars and newcomers alike. What I really love about this place is they have some type of special or event going on every night of the week... there's even free food some nights! I have not personally been here every day of the week yet but days I have enjoyed include Mondays: Arts&Crafts Tuesdays: Free PBJs, $1 PBR after 9pm, Trivia at midnight Friday: Free Pizza There is a large patio area where most people tend to hang out (surprisingly there is a good amount of people out here even when the weather is cold! Silly weather, can't keep us crazy Rochesterian's inside...) There are tables, benches, a firepit and a hammock (which is a bit used in and hole-y, but still a fun option) outside to enjoy. I'll never be quite hipster enough for Lux. I do think it's a good bar with fun themed nights and a friendly crew of regulars, but somehow I can't help but feel that the hipsters smoking out back downing their PBRs and complaining about injustices in the world or new indie labels in Brooklyn are probably just as stereotypical as the Miller Lite-drinking striped shirt-wearing d-bag at Murphy's Law. People start becoming so hell bent on being "alternative" that suddenly alternative is common. There are many good qualities about Lux, and I've had some great chilled times there with friends in the backyard, which is also a nice place on burn-your-own-burger night. However, for me, I'll never fit into that niche without squeezing uncomfortably into it. This Thursday we went to Lux and tried to request a song for my birthday. We realized that the DJ had a tip jar - 5$ for requests, so we went to the ATM. We went up and gave them 5$ and tried to suggest multiple bands without even a specific song and they said no to each one. They refused to even try to work with us even though we gave them money and the tip jar said for requests. Then they refused to give our money back even though they didn't take requests at all, and they threatened to get us kicked out. Unnecessarily rude for no reason and took our money for nothing. Best Bar The word 'hipster' is in a lot of these reviews, and i don't think it applies. Hipster is a word that evokes snobbery and exclusivity. That's not this place at all. My wife and I went in for Friday teacher happy hour specials. And we're not out of an LL Bean catalog, but we are not exactly on the bleeding edge of youth fashion. And we fit right in. There was a large variety of people in a cool bar, a great outdoor space, having free pizza and delicious drinks. And if you're a teacher, go for the Friday thing. It rules. read more

In the summertime, Lux was my FAVORITE Rochester bar. Why? Decent prices, awesome specials and themed nights (arts and crafts night, movie night, etc.), rockin' Rochester crowd and the amazing backyard! Where else can you go out, enjoy a Hollywood classic in a backyard and sip on your favorite beer for a decent price? No where! There was never a night when I went to Lux and (a) didn't run into at least 3-4 people that I knew (but hadn't planned on seeing that evening). (b) didn't meet at least 1 new interesting person. (c) didn't get something for free (whether it be popcorn, a drink, pb&j sandwiches, et cetera). Lux also has a great assortment of board games, so if you finish a dinner date a little early, why not head over while it's still crowded and get to know your mate over some Monopoly or Boggle? Lux is located away from the pretentious aura that surrounds the East Ave. bar scene and it radiates it's own gaudy aura of cheap 21 to 28 year olds. At the same time, you're going to meet a pretty diverse crowd of people when you visit this place. They also allow dogs! They've got a pool table and sometimes a fire lit in the back. Lots of people smoke (more than just cigarettes) in the backyard, but they're usually not too obnoxious about it. There is always a wait for the bathroom, but as crowded as it gets, the bathroom is always pretty clean. The bartenders aren't the greatest mixologists...and you will have to flag them down. For example, my best friend and I went there one night and decided to get Cosmopolitans and I think the bartender just through together every clear liquor that he had behind the bar...and then overcharged us...After that I pretty much stuck to simple mixed drinks or draft beers. Lux can get extremely crowded on weekends, but is usually pretty somber and mellow during the week. I think that it's a great place to meet up with friends after work (which I often did) or take someone that you're just getting to know (the weird decorations can make great conversation starters!)...But if you're trying to avoid a certain Rochester native from your past or something, you might not want to visit Lux...I'd vote it, "Most likely to run into your hipster ex-boyfriend." read more

Or was there no choice but to make it devil themed because of the address? But I digress. If your comfortable with who you are, what you're wearing or just like good folk, this is the lounge/bar for your. Let your Freak Flag fly is a common saying about this place. There is NEVER a cover charge. They have a really big back yard with a roaring fire and enough space for a family bbq. It's a little romantic if you think about it. I'm not a bar person in general but if I'm going to a bar this is where I want to be. This is the most comfortable I've ever felt in a bar when not working (yes I go to bars for work sometimes). Themed in red and black and lots of devil, Satan, and succubus you can't help but enjoy the atmosphere. Also they have cool nights like PB&J nights (every Tuesday) Adult coloring night, and GAME NIGHT. Can't you just feel the love? Otherwise it's got all the "normal" bar staples. I have been going to this bar for more than 2 decades. It is the BEST bar in Rochester. It's on my Rochester Bucket List! Whenever I am in town I must go here! I love this crazy place-there's always something going on, Twister Tuesday's, backyard movies, Tupperware parties. Yes, Tupperware! This is truly a gathering place for everyone. It's a goth bar, it's a funky bar, its a young people's bar, it's an old people's bar, it's a hipster bar, it's a straight bar, it's a gay bar, it's a dog bar. Doggies that are well behaved are accepted! Everyone no matter who or what you are is ACCEPTED!! People are dancing to the DJ. There are games. There's a firepit, there's a huge backyard, there's a really cute bar-back if you're into the Jason Momoa type-just sayin'. All the employees are cute I don't want anyone to feel left out that's not what Lux is about! This is just a cool freakin' place!! Everyone was on the dance floor, granny getting her funk on, hipster channeling his inner Miley Cyrus, a guy wearing a Bill Cosbyesque sweater putting the moves on his lady, lesbians in love, everyone was gettin' down. I've always loved Lux. It's the one bar where everyone is welcome, and has a wide range of people going to it. The outdoor patio is great especially in the winter with the fire pit. They do a $1 burger night on Sundays (you grill it yourself outside) and always have different themes going on. It's a fantastic place to go and relax. read more

I'm still a fan of Lux but each time I go, Lux seems to be less and less appealing. I know it's not because I'm getting old :p But the lines for the bathroom, even when it's early in the evening and seems pretty dead, are long which is kind of annoying. The patio always seems so smoky I feel like I'm in doors. The staff is nice enough but the last three visits I've been they don't seem very knowledgeable, it's either order a beer or a common mixed drink or don't bother :( read more

The interior is visually busy and coated in loud stickers, bright colors, and art of all kinds. A strong first impression, accompanied by excellent, "divey" vibes. There's always great music playing (ymmv), and the drinks are cheap. The bonfire/seating area out back is wonderful, especially during late fall/early winter. Aside from daily specials boasting cheap drinks or free pizza, they are conveniently located next to Hedonist (for your chocolate and ice cream desires) and sometimes you'll find Le Petit Poutine food truck set up outside. They also have special events like movie nights and dance parties. There is a pool table, couch, various seating arrangements and an outdoor patio WITH A HAMMOCK. Lux is great place to go. Got wrote this review happened on Feb 22 Night. Lindsay is the worse bartender to treat deaf customer. Her rude attitude, skip my order, ignore my attention. She told them she is very busy and it was not my turn. I had few orders but she decide give me one drink and take my tab away when I were not finish with my order. Owner or Manger need training her how treat deaf customers correct or let her go. In Rochester is large community for deaf. I have no problem with other bars as they had great patient to make sure customers happy. Lux really disappointed me that night. It was not first time I heard. Have to use my voice here!
