I cohosted an event on Saturday and very disappointed with the overall customer experience of the winery . Let me first say this is a beautiful Winery in laurel and very spacious. This winery deserves all the awards and promotion that I've seen all socials .... However, when you know a major dmv social group (dmvdoes ) is hosting an event of 40+ people why is only 1 staff member working the whole night.? Our event experience (paid ) came with a glass of wine for all our guests. The wine was just put on a table without any explanation of the wine , grapes, or legacy. I brought several things for a raffle including the mayor bottle of wine , 2 tastings, and a wine flight for myself. There was no education or discussion about wine. Next, I ordered food and drinks before our event started and I didn't get my food until an hour after I arrived. Next , the suya was so tough I almost choked on a piece of it. The rice was decent but not a winner for me. Lastly, parking is limited to street parking or an outdoor parking lot up the street. It's a cute place to have a social event or a laid back wine meetup but definitely need more staff, wine education for visitors, and better food options. read more

I came here in September for my birthday and been very hesitant to write a review. I forgot how I heard about this place but I was excited because it's the first black owned winery in laurel. I think it's the only winery in Laurel so I definitely wanted to come and support. I first went to check it out and see what information I could get to reserve for a large party. It's kind of located in the cut of main st but there's plenty of street parking. Walk in and you'll see there are two settings. It's very welcoming and warm with beautiful decor and many seating on both sides. I explained to the gentleman what I wanted and he said it shouldn't be no problem just reach out to the events manager. It was a bit last minute, I sent an email on 9/22 to come on 9/28 at 5:30pm (had to confirm the number of people). Just to clarify, we spoke on the phone and email for communication of all information. I noticed they had an event that same day but it started earlier in the day and the events manager told me it should end before my guests arrive. I told her I was having 20 people total and I was ordering two charcuterie boards. Everything was confirmed and good to go as I thought. My guests were letting me know they were arriving but were seated in the smaller area. I was hoping by the time I got there it would be handled but no they already started ordering in the smaller area and the staff there said they were told only 10 people were suppose to come but I showed them the emails. The event they had ran longer than it should have which I wish I would have known just to let my guests know. The staff then tried to fix it but literally a whole hour and half later. Once we got in the event room, we had our charcuterie boards and others order their suya and jollof rice. They did not finish their food, it actually looked dry. Before the day, I was told my guests were not able to do flights but the day of they were able to order. I wanted to order some for the party but it's okay, we all figured out which wine we liked best and a couple bought bottles. To end it, the staff brought out a cute cupcake for my friends to wish me happy birthday. They have a speaker for you to connect if you want to play your own music. Other than that, we had fun. Regardless, I'm going to have fun. I recommend to go and have your own experience. I will definitely come back for a last minute date or just to pick up one of the wine bottles I liked. read more

I absolutely enjoyed my time here ! I got the opportunity to meet the two owners of the winery and learn a little bit more about them and their wine. The stories behind each one made every sip better. This is one of those places that you have to buy a bottle to take home because you won't stop thinking about how good the wine was. I am no wine connoisseur but wow they expanded my wine pallet so far in just a day. They do have charcuterie and jollof and suya here. The staff is sweet , the service is great and the decor and ambiance is absolutely stunning! Everything and I mean everything is beautiful here. Love the decor and love the overall vibe of this place. As soon as my friend and I walked in, we noticed that there was a big event going on in the next room over. If you don't want to sit at the bar, that's where people can sit to have their wine. The bartender (Nadia) brought us menus and told us she was prepping for the sip and paint event happening, and said she'd be with us in a few minutes. She said she was the only one working at the time, and so her time was going to be split between the bar and the next room. I appreciated the heads up on that -- and I also appreciated her informing us about the frequent towing across the street. Based on where the location is, you wouldn't think that would be a thing, but it is what it is. I was able to park right down the street thankfully! The prices are up there, but they had some dope looking wines that I was excited to try! My buddy and I decided to split a flight of 4 generous pours -- he picked two and I picked two. All in all, we got: Obys Boldness (dry red): indeed as bold as the name says, and I enjoyed the flavor. Chardonel (dry white): the pear REALLY stood out and it was my favorite of my two picks. Rose: didn't really like it personally -- a bit too sweet for me. For Nneem (semi-sweet red): I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this!! My rankings are chardonel/for Nneem, Obys boldness, then rose. There are other wines and food to try, so I look forward to coming back at some point. And I need to find out when their events are -- I'd love to come back when something big like the sip & paint isn't happening at the same time. It never feels good when you enter an empty business and have to wait and ask for common things. I frequent winery and am accustomed to learning the history of the business and wine. I had to ask for every detail I pulled out the employe. I had to inquire about the naming of the wine, the business, the grapes, the wine club, and so on. More training is needed. Employees have to understand the brand and sell. I had four wines and liked 1, The Neem. Other than that, the decor was nice. Small portion of Jellof and I wouldn't call the meat suya. There was no spice or dusting. Just tough meat. I might venture back on Friday during happy hour. Would love to experience fresh suya (vs the reheated stuff we got) and Afrobeats with a lively atmosphere. read more

I really enjoyed my visit here. I was able to get the history of how this winery came about. The waiter was very knowledgeable and was able to answer every question I had. The atmosphere was nice and the vibe was amazing esp with the music selection. The food menu is limited(3 options), but the suya and jollof were really good. They do not cook the food in house, it's catered from a local restaurant. I chose to do a wine flight 2 reds, 1 white, and a rosé. Out of the 4, The Mayor(Cab) and the Rosé were my favorite. They have a vast selection of wines to try/buy and they are adding more. They have a membership you can sign up for and the price per tier is very affordable. Yesterday was the 2nd year anniversary of this 1st African-owned winery in the United States. The place is not like a typical winery but more like a wine tasting and event space. It has a quaint feeling where you can host small events. The wine was delicious and the suya I had was fresh off the grill and simply AMAZING!!! Been here twice and this is a hidden gem. I met the owner on my 1st visit and she is friendly and knowledgeable, explained to my friend and I all the notes of each wine. This was right before they started serving Suya and Jollof rice. She gave us a sample and I definitely told her I would return. On my second visit, it was a quiet Friday evening in the summer and I had a flight and shared a plate of the Suya and jollof rice. Enjoyed a glass after and played some of the card games they have by bar. I can't think of the names of the wines I tried both visits but the place is lovely and has enough space for private events. I will definitely return to show support to the 1st ever wine tasting venue of Laurel for great wine, great service and great food. read more

I visited here recently! I've been following this business on social media since they first opened several months ago. They're located off Main Street in Laurel - this space was previously held by a coffee shop that I frequented during the pandemic. I was intrigued by their backstory - first African immigrant owned winery in the United States. We got a chance to chat with their owner, who is very passionate about wine and expanding this family-owned business. Don't come expecting a typical winery/vineyard vibe. It's more of a wine bar/event space! I still enjoyed my experience. The venue is perfect for a date or a private event. They do sip and paint nights. They offer flights or wine by the glass or bottle. My fave was their rose! It was also on National Rose Day when I visited. They have a limited food menu with items such as suya and jollof rice, but I didn't try any food since I wasn't too hungry. I did try the chocolate, and it was good. I recommend this place! We came here after my flight back to Maryland from South Florida. Upon entering, we were greeted by the bartender. He was happy to help explain the wines since we had never been here before. We tried the wine flight along with a charcuterie. We enjoyed the wines. My favorite was called "Tribe." Came across this winery on Instagram so I went to check it out on a Sunday afternoon with a friend, and we were so pleasantly surprised! It's located at the end of a small street off Main Street in Laurel with plenty of street parking around. The bar side of the winery has a few hightops and a long table, and there is a larger section to one side that was closed off when we went but seemed amenable to hosting large gatherings. You can buy wine by the glass, bottle, or try a flight -- we opted for the flight! A few items on the menu are excluded from the flight but there are still plenty to choose from. My personal favorite was from the reds, called the "Tribe." They have a small menu of eats: charcuterie, a selection of chocolates, jollof rice, and some meats. What a chill spot! They've only been opened for 3 weeks but the wines range from Pinot to Cabernet Sauvignon. I grabbed a fight of The Mayorv which has rich, velvety, blueberry, and plum notes. Oby's Boldness which has rich cherry and strawberry notes. Their rosē is a vidal-chambourcin blend with a delicate fruity end. The last was their Pinot Grigio with coastal, apple, pear, and citrus notes. I can't wait to come back to try more of their wines and enjoy the homely atmosphere. The menu consists of 6 wine options ranging from deep reds to the ever popular rose. I order a flight ($35) which allowed you to choose four wines from the menu in order to get a grasp of the winescape. It was nice that you had the option to mix and match the wines based on your palate and of course I leaned more towards the white wine. At the time of my visit the only food options that were available for purchase were chocolates imported from Ghana. I'm hopeful that more food will be made available in the future. read more

The owner, Ifeoma was so friendly andnyoubcan tell she has a deep passion for wine and culture. The winery is beautifuly designed and spacious, with a cozy tasting room. I enjoyed a flight of 4 wines, each one with a distinct and delicious flavor. Clyopatra offers a variety of 6 wines. from dry to sweet, red to white, and even sparkling. The wines are paired with Ghanian chocolate (for purchase separately) which is rich and smooth and enhances the taste of the wines. The atmosphere is lively and fun, with Afrobeats playing in the background. I highly recommend Clyopatra to anyone looking for a new and exciting wine experience in Maryland. I will preface this by stating that for small parties served in the bar area, the experience seemed to be much better than what I encountered. As part of a large seated party, once our orders were taken and money collected, it was an unacceptably long amount of time before we were served or even approached by a staff member. I was prepared to lavishly dine and drink to support this black owned business and as such truly heartbroken by what I witnessed. I can only pray that things improve and the approach to customer service and hospitality is sharpened with time. I ordered the jollof rice and suya initially along with the white wine flight. I subsequently added the charcuterie board as a starter. Perhaps, I was misunderstood because I only received the charcuterie board and the flight. The bright moment of the night came when a gentleman patron treated me to a glass of wine when he noticed how long we were waiting to be served. Thank you kind stranger, for your act of chivalry. Last Saturday my sister, cousin and I got there at 1:10pm. The bartender greeted us and said we can sit anywhere. She was nice and friendly and the only one working so she was busy the whole time. We kept moving our seats. We sat in the room across from the bar on the sofa but we seen some guys moving tables and putting it in their trucks. I asked what was going on and they said a party was happening soon. I told the bartender but she told us no one told her about a private party and we can sit whenever we would like. We did order food and waited over 2 hours. We were too hungry so decided to cancel our food order. The food is not made in house. We paid for our flights and decided to take pictures outside where the tables were at. I placed my phone on the table and we were taking group pictures and then our mood went down. A worker just came in and I know he is a worker because he had a shirt on that had the wine bar name on it. He has a black Range Rover truck. He was inside but had the door open pressing his keylock. I didn't even notice him doing that bec i was busy laughing while snapping pictures but my cousin noticed it. He then YELLS at us saying, " Don't touch my car"! He said it 3 times and was mean mugging us. It was people looking out the window watching. We never touch this worker car, we had one foot on the curb and our other foot was on the pavement. His dirty truck was closer to the street than the pavement. It was dirty and had bird poo on it... why would we be disrespectful, lean on a car and dirty up our outfit. If he took a parallel test he definitely would've failed. We keep telling him no one was touching his car and he keep getting smart with us. Then he was inside staring thur the window and mean mugging us. Him getting smart and yelling at 3 females just ruined our mood!! read more
