1st time trying kolaches so I can't compare it but it was good and it come out nice & hot. We had the bacon & egg, egg & cheese, and Astro which had steak, cheese & jalapeno sausage I believe. All 3 were very good and the Texas hot sauce was good but a little too tangy for me. We got here a little later in the day about 10:30am and they were out of some items. Place had a couple tables & benches to enjoy your breakfast but it is very small. Price was okay-$4 for the kolaches and $10 for Astro $0.75 for a small sauce container of hot sauce. The kolaches taste just like they did back home, if not better. The owner was super nice, as well. We stopped here after Mass on Sunday expecting to sit down for a relaxing coffee and a couple of kolaches. It was immediately obvious that I should have done some more research, as the place is great for take out but simple and uncomfortable for sitting and trying to dine-in. There are only a few high stools and a couple of short bar-height counters along the wall (see pictures...not comfortable for my wife in her dress). We ordered coffee, but it was cold and all that they have is powder creamer. After asking, found out that the warmer switch on the coffee machine was turned off. The lady at the counter put it in the microwave for us, but it just wasn't that good of coffee. I ordered the jalapeno cheese sausage kolache (see picture) and really liked it, but unless you want to stand by a high counter to eat and drink canned soda / pop, it just isn't that comfortable to dine-in here. Long story short, if you like kolaches and want to pick some up to bring home and eat, this would be a good place. I would not recommend this place for dining-in though. We love Coaches!! Always friendly and helpful workers when we go to pick up. The smoked sausage beef and cheese if my favorite. I ALWAYS get it. The past two times I've gotten it(over the course of a few months) and I can tell they changed their sausage. It's not as good any more. I'm going to have to start getting something else now as the new sausage's flavor just isn't my favorite. My husband always gets the gravy to go with his and they were unfortunately out this morning. This has happened 2/3 past times and unfortunately when we've had company that say the gravy makes it. We will of course be back. It's too delicious not too. I ordered the sausage Kolaches and the egg, cheese and beef as well as the sweet treats of strawberry, apple and cherry. My favorite was the sausage and cheese Kolaches. But the best part of all is the bread. It is sweet and light with a melt in your mouth appeal. The beef, egg and cheese was okay, but not my favorite. The sweet Apple Kolaches were fabulous, again somewhat pricey--$2 a piece. All in all, this was a good morning pick me upper to last until dinner. read more

Until I stumbled upon Coaches' at its former location off of 22nd/88th St, I hadn't seen kolaches since I moved away from Houston. My grandmother used to get them for me, back then. Coaches' has many variations on the kolache (meat and/or stuff inside bread) than I had growing up, including brisket. Start with the basic sausage one to get an idea of the more traditional taste. The breakfast ones are a nice break from a drive through offering. Friendly folks, too. Don't let the unknown keep you from trying one of these -- it's just a great bun/sandwich thing. read more

Everything is fantastic. I opted for the sausage and cheese, ham and cheese, and the sausage and cheese with jalapeno. The sausage and cheese with jalapeno is definitely my favorite. A nice bite, but not overpowering. A soft pastry exterior with a center specified on the chalkboard menu beside/behind the front counter...and cheesy goodness. There's nothing wrong with any of that for breakfast. There are egg breakfast combos available too. I've been following Patrice and her family's venture from the first time I saw her kolaches mentioned in a Facebook thread on a metro foodie page, but I wasn't sure I could justify buying a dozen (minimum for a catering order)...she had mentioned opening a physical space soon...so I waited. There is no minimum order in the store. Today was the day. Their grand opening for their new store front was from 800 AM - 200 PM today... They sold out by 1100 AM. Tucked in a little strip mall in Clive. Easily accessible from University Blvd Westbound if you're coming from the East. If you're coming from the West you'll want to use Clark or pull a U turn by the car wash. Prices run from $2.00 to $3.75 ea. Cash or credit. WOW!!!! fantastic experience Walked in and was promptly greeted, clean location, nicely decorated, welcoming and tells a story of what it is and where it came from. Next.... needed to get details on these yummy balls of bread and the treats they hold. I went for the Big Play named after the owner. It did not disappoint loaded with Eggs, Bacon, Ham, Sausage and Cheese with a side a sausage gravy for dipping! Really, it's not heavy at all. It just hit the spot, I was full and satisfied. The bread on the outside is just a tad sweet but compliments everything perfect! You can eat it there or take with you. He warmed it up for me, HEAVEN!! They also do catering and events. Went here for the first time. It's a chill place to be, very minimalistic, but cute. It's a great place for getting a quick breakfast baked good. The people behind the counter are very nice as well, they tell you how to warm it up to get the best taste if you take it togo. Now for the food: we got the bacon, egg, & cheese; beef sausage and cheese; breakfast sausage, and egg; and the ham and cheese. All these Kolaches were great! The breading was fluffy and sweet, the meat and filling was hearty and savory. The homemade heat (hot sauce) was great too! The heat is vinegar based. Simple sweet bread with savory filling. I'm a fan of baked goods and this place has some decent savory options. I'm used to the Asian bakeries where they place the hot dog in a bun -- almost similar. This place is a GREAT grab and go breakfast/lunch spot! I had a chance to chat with the owner and kind of get his story. Long story short, he's from Texas and loves kolaches. His wife decided to try making them and home and they turned out amazing! They've sold these at the farmers market and got into this brick and mortar about a year ago. Have been here ever since! A kolach is nothing more than a type of pastry that has stuff inside. In this case, they usually have breakfast still fillings like bacon and cheese. They also have sweet ones with cream cheese or jams. They dough is super pillow-y and goes great in both savory and sweet options. I rarely make it out this way but when I do, I will not definitely make it a point to stop in. Disclaimer: I had never even heard of kolaches before I heard of this place, so this is my only kolache experience. We came in around 1 pm on a Saturday (they close at 2 pm). Coaches Kolaches is a very simple location, with a single display case. It is clean and neat, with a cute chalkboard accent wall that customers and kids can draw and write on. The woman who helped us today asked us if we had ever been in before, and gave us a simple run down of their offerings before we ordered. We got two savory, and one sweet to go. Overall Impression of Kolaches: The bread was very lightly sweet, and super soft without being doughy. I was so skeptical going in, because in pictures they look like they might have a tough crust on them, but they don't. They are supple and delectable. Egg, Bacon, and Cheese: These are smaller than I thought they would be, but they are loaded with goodness. The bacon they use is nice and peppery, and everything melted together beautifully. The ingredients seemed nice and fresh, and it was totally delicious. Jalapeno Sausage: So to be upfront, I am NOT a sausage person, or a hot dog person. They just don't appeal to me unless they've been roasted over a campfire. However, the mister loves them, so we got one to try. I'm really glad we did. I ACTUALLY liked it. A lot. The sausage had a nice "pop" when you bit into it, the jalapeno was present but not overwhelming, and the dough around it wasn't soggy like I would have expected. A++ Blueberry: This reminded me more of a danish, but with softer breading. It was okay, but I think I will stick to the savory ones! This place is a treasure, and we are so happy we tried it. At only $3 a piece, I feel the price point is extremely fair given how tasty and fresh everything was. We plan on returning, and telling everyone we know about how great it was. read more

I really liked this place! Called ahead on a Saturday morning to have them save a half dozen sweet Kolaches since I wouldn't be in until late morning...they gladly did. We got 6 sweet Kolaches, and 3 savory. Everyone enjoyed the sweet Kolaches who had one. I had the cherry and thought it was great...even better warmed for a few seconds. LOVE!!! The dough is a sweet traditional kolache dough, exactly what I would get on the streets all over Prague. Their sausage with cheese kolache is hands down the best food I have eaten in the metro. As a native Texan, I was shocked when I learned that Kolaches weren't a breakfast staple all across the country. Once you taste them at Coaches, you'll understand my absolute confusion. They are damn delicious and a perfect way to start your day, especially a Saturday. When I walked in, I was thrilled by their assortment. They had bacon and egg, steak and egg, ham and cheese, the traditional sausage and cheese, the list goes on and on. They even had boudin, a southern delicacy of rice, Cajun spices, pork and Cajun sausage (it is phenomenal). The boudin Kolache was so good I can't even tell y'all. I also tried the bacon and egg and it was delish. My final salute to Coaches is this. There's a very famous place in Texas called the Czech Stop that has Kolaches people drive hours for. I am saying in no uncertain terms that Coaches Kolaches are better than the Czech Stops. I will go as far to say that when Texas family and friends are in town, I will bring them to Coaches just to get a taste and I know they will be impressed. The fact that this place is on the way between my gym and my house is an issue, it's really screwing up my diet. It takes about 2 minutes to get in and out, which is ideal on your way to work. One of very few kolache places that really get the TX style (an elevated version of Klobasnek) savory kolache right. I drive between Wisconsin and TX semi regularly and make a point to stop in, as I know it is the best kolache I'll find for the next 500 or so miles. I would even rate the steak kolache as the best one of that type I've ever had regardless of region. On my first visit, the owner immediately identified me as from TX as he was originally.
