As homesick Texans, we've been missing kolaches for some time now. We finally had an opportunity to stop by Coaches Kolaches this morning and it was perfect. The kolaches taste just like they did back home, if not better. The owner was super nice, as well. The shop is furnished like a donut shop, so not a lot of indoor seating, but the ambiance is also very nice. We will be stopping by here whenever we can, for sure.

We stopped here after Mass on Sunday expecting to sit down for a relaxing coffee and a couple of kolaches. It was immediately obvious that I should have done some more research, as the place is great for take out but simple and uncomfortable for sitting and trying to dine-in. There are only a few high stools and a couple of short bar-height counters along the wall (see pictures...not comfortable for my wife in her dress). We ordered coffee, but it was cold and all that they have is powder creamer. After asking, found out that the warmer switch on the coffee machine was turned off. The lady at the counter put it in the microwave for us, but it just wasn't that good of coffee. I ordered the jalapeno cheese sausage kolache (see picture) and really liked it, but unless you want to stand by a high counter to eat and drink canned soda / pop, it just isn't that comfortable to dine-in here. Long story short, if you like kolaches and want to pick some up to bring home and eat, this would be a good place. I would not recommend this place for dining-in though. A little taste of Texas right in the heart of Iowa. Some people even make the trip from Minnesota to get some. Love Coaches Kolaches. If you live nearby you have no excuse to not try them. Even if you have to drive a little bit, they're worth the drive! My belt line is probably happy I don't live closer. I would be in the store all the time.

The little hole in a wall is right next to a State Farm's insurance office. I've never a a kolache before. I had a breakfast kolache filed with sausage, cheese and egg. My wife had a cream cheese one. We were both happy with our choices. The service was donut shop quick.

We love Coaches!! Always friendly and helpful workers when we go to pick up. The smoked sausage beef and cheese if my favorite. I ALWAYS get it. The past two times I've gotten it(over the course of a few months) and I can tell they changed their sausage. It's not as good any more. I'm going to have to start getting something else now as the new sausage's flavor just isn't my favorite. My husband always gets the gravy to go with his and they were unfortunately out this morning. This has happened 2/3 past times and unfortunately when we've had company that say the gravy makes it. We will of course be back. It's too delicious not too. I'll just order something new and we will cross our fingers for gravy. Definitely try it out. Great people and yummy food.

After an early morning workout, it's time to nourish the mind, body and soul. I think I'll try Coaches Kolaches. The biscuits and sausage was fresh and tasty. I ordered the sausage Kolaches and the egg, cheese and beef as well as the sweet treats of strawberry, apple and cherry. My favorite was the sausage and cheese Kolaches. But the best part of all is the bread. It is sweet and light with a melt in your mouth appeal. The beef, egg and cheese was okay, but not my favorite. The sweet Apple Kolaches were fabulous, again somewhat pricey--$2 a piece. All in all, this was a good morning pick me upper to last until dinner.

Until I stumbled upon Coaches' at its former location off of 22nd/88th St, I hadn't seen kolaches since I moved away from Houston. My grandmother used to get them for me, back then. Coaches' has many variations on the kolache (meat and/or stuff inside bread) than I had growing up, including brisket. Start with the basic sausage one to get an idea of the more traditional taste. The breakfast ones are a nice break from a drive through offering. Friendly folks, too. Don't let the unknown keep you from trying one of these -- it's just a great bun/sandwich thing.

Everything is fantastic. I opted for the sausage and cheese, ham and cheese, and the sausage and cheese with jalapeno. The sausage and cheese with jalapeno is definitely my favorite. A nice bite, but not overpowering. A soft pastry exterior with a center specified on the chalkboard menu beside/behind the front counter...and cheesy goodness. There's nothing wrong with any of that for breakfast. There are egg breakfast combos available too. I've been following Patrice and her family's venture from the first time I saw her kolaches mentioned in a Facebook thread on a metro foodie page, but I wasn't sure I could justify buying a dozen (minimum for a catering order)...she had mentioned opening a physical space soon...so I waited. There is no minimum order in the store. Today was the day. Their grand opening for their new store front was from 800 AM - 200 PM today... They sold out by 1100 AM. Tucked in a little strip mall in Clive. Easily accessible from University Blvd Westbound if you're coming from the East. If you're coming from the West you'll want to use Clark or pull a U turn by the car wash. Prices run from $2.00 to $3.75 ea. Cash or credit. There's a couple small stand up counters to eat at right now; I opted to-go and wrote this post in my car from the parking lot. Stop by and try one.

Went here for the first time. It's a chill place to be, very minimalistic, but cute. It's a great place for getting a quick breakfast baked good. The people behind the counter are very nice as well, they tell you how to warm it up to get the best taste if you take it togo. Now for the food: we got the bacon, egg, & cheese; beef sausage and cheese; breakfast sausage, and egg; and the ham and cheese. All these Kolaches were great! The breading was fluffy and sweet, the meat and filling was hearty and savory. The homemade heat (hot sauce) was great too! The heat is vinegar based. I would definitely come here again, but would recommend to come in early! I wanted to get the egg and cheese but they were out and it was only 1045am! So get there early! It's freshly baked and tasty!

As has been the case on each of our visits, the food and atmosphere were off the charts. The service wasn't quite as prompt this morning as what I've become accustomed to, but the experience was still great. Best of all...I saw that they now have a daily Happy ("Flocktail") Hour everyday before they close - and it is a 50% Off special - so now I can add them to HappyHourDesMoines.com also!! Today, my wife ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and a Bloody Mary (see pictures) - and with all of the new items on the menu, our friend ordered the Smoked Corn Beef Hash (see picture) and I went with the Healthy Hatch Tacos (see picture). I swapped one of my tacos with our friend for 1/2 of his hash, sampled my wife's Chicken Fried Steak - and can assure you that you will NOT go wrong ordering any of them, as all were absolutely delicious!

And this was after we waited in line to get on the waiting list, just to be told to scan the QR code, to put ourselves in the waiting list. What?? I finally had to ask for the tables be cleaned so our party of 10 could sit. The waitress didn't bring some drinks, food was wrong and disappointing. They kept telling us they were short staffed but that just sounds like excuses. The two waitresses outside were not busy, it was manageable just unorganized. Too bad, it looked promising but when someone has to do your job (asking to buss tables, looking high and low for silverware), that's bad business.

The host worked to get everyone seated as quickly as he could. A server was at the table almost immediately for our drink order, and they were served in no time. There is quite a selection of breakfast and lunch items to choose from, and I settled on The Classic. I really liked the option for a small cake instead of toast, and I enjoyed that tremendously! The ham steak was thick, juicy, and flavorful, and the eggs were scrambled perfectly. The hash browns were a little bland, and I would rather have had an option for breakfast potatoes instead. But the meal was good and reasonably priced for the portions. For those who like coffee, there is a wide selection of options. The place is cozy inside with warm colors and all of the workers were extremely friendly in their interactions with customer. I felt very welcome and the table was well taken care of throughout the meal. The restaurant itself is nestled in a strip mall off the main street, so it isn't something I would know was there if I were just driving by. But now that I know it is here, I will definitely make a return trip to try additional items on the menu that caught my attention (I'm looking at you apple and blueberry bread, cinnamon rolls, and crake!)

It's a nice, clean, country-esque little space on Jordan Creek Parkway. They have an attractive menu featuring locally sourced meats and other products. I had the salsa Verde pork with eggs, and my wife had the biscuits and gravy. The salsa verde pork and eggs was delicious. The pork was tender, had a wonderful flavor with hints of tomatillo and lime with a lot of green chili and tomatillo salsa over the top of nicely cooked homemade fried potatoes. My two eggs over medium were on top with pico de gallo. My only knock would've been my eggs were more over done than over medium, but we're splitting hairs at that point. My wife's biscuit and gravy featured a lovely fluffy biscuit with an ample helping of sausage gravy with eggs and some of the same nice fried potatoes. I had a coffee which was fine. My wife had a specialty coffee called the Honeybee which she said was delicious. The servers were polite and attentive, and everything came out in a very reasonable timeframe. I would definitely recommend anyone in the Jordan Creek area. Who's looking for a breakfast spot to give Homegrown a go!

We were greeted and asked if we were dining in (it appears they do a brisk takeout business) and were told to sit where we wanted. It was surprisingly crowded for a Sunday afternoon at 4 pm. The menu is extensive and hubby and I both like Mediterranean food. I chose the Falafel plate, served with five falafel balls, hummus, a pita, and Greek salad. The portion was generous (ended up taking two falafel home). Served with tahini and their house green sauce (olive oil, cilantro, and jalapeño) It wasn't spicy but it was so delicious - I could get addicted to this thinking of all the other ways so could enjoy it!! The Greek salad was served with house dressing - garlic and yogurt, also very good. The falafel was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, and flavorful. The hummus was not at all grainy - smooth but just a tad bland. Hubby had the lamb skewers and liked them very much. Served with rice, salad, and hummus. He also took one of the skewers home. We both had the mango Fresca juice. A bit too sweet for me but I generally drink unsweetened beverages. Hubby liked it a lot.
