Really nice and varied antique mall. No clue why the low star rating as this place is worth the trip. I live in Chicago and easily one of the best antique stores for nice pieces of furniture. They have a lot of great and unique furniture along with many smalls. Very reasonably priced and well organized. The folks at the shop were friendly and professional. The place is surprisingly big as they have a full lower level and also a mezzanine area. The nice thing about this mall is the lower level antiques were not junk like many antique malls. This place use to be some large and open general store and has great ceiling height. Definitely worth a trip as this is not only a great store but also a very cute town. There are 3-4 other antique stores within a few blocks and this town has a lot of charm. read more

My husband and I have been to this mall multiple times and have always been treated extremely well. They have always accepted our exempt certificate willingly and I appreciate that they follow the law when it comes to requiring the certificate. I noticed some comments about not helping load large items. As a mall owner myself, I understand that many employees are not able to lift heavy items and buyers should understand this. It is also a liability for small businesses to help load large furniture items. If the item gets damaged or a vehicle gets damaged during loading, the customer often tries to place blame on mall as opposed to accepting responsibly. We highly recommend this mall. We drive over 4 hours several times a year to visit here. read more

I absolutely love this place always clean and organized. So I asked the owner about a review from Ted H. And since I'm a dealer I asked about his complaint. The owner simply stated that for tax exempt you must have a current cetificate with the state seal, tax exempt number and if there is an expiration. The owner said Ted H. Did not have a certificate but some number on a napkin. The owner told me that if Ted H.had the certificate that they would just copy it on their copier and all would have been fine. I then pulled my certificate out of my wallet and funny the owner also pulled a certificate out of his wallet. I have never had an issue probably because I presented the correct document. Well anyway this is an awesome place to do business with. read more

Mall is NOT DEALER FRIENDLY! Staff would not accept license for tax exempt purchase unless provided copy! After shopping hundreds of malls over the last 40 years, this was a first! Not talking about a huge amount of money, but this mall obliviously doesn't want or need my business. And they won't get it. read more

I don't know how this place has such bad reviews, that's unfortunate. Over the course of a few days we purchased some bedroom pieces from here. The people were friendly and extremely helpful. I like that they have a lot of stuff but not TOO much, like some stores. I feel like I can actually get a good look at everything. The vendors that I looked at had pretty fair prices. We tried to purchase an item that was priced as "stack of buckets for $15"... They were in poor condition but we felt it was a good value if we could fix them. The likely owner of this antique store was rude to us as soon as we brought them to the counter. She couldn't believe they were priced this way and berated us for believing it to be. We pointed out the tag that clearly said "stack of buckets" and she nearly bit my husband's head off. She couldn't believe that one of her vendors would price something so LOW. She ultimately refused to sell us the item because she felt it was UNDER PRICED. She continued to mistreat us until we left the store. RUDE, RUDE, RUDE. I would NOT recommend shopping at this antique mall. We have never been treated so poorly and we are frequent antique/vintage shoppers. read more

I was very disappointed with the mall. Unfriendly staff and no hot water in the bathrooms.

Mall is in a big building, but doesn't have a lot of merchandise, and nothing great. We were disappointed. We had a better experience with the other people who reviewed the mall - the people working there were great to us. The 2 women at the counter were really nice and helpful, 1 called around to other shops to see if they were open and the other coached her as to what places in the area to call that might have what we collect. I will say as a former antiques dealer (and a middle aged woman who's not very tall), that I never liked moving furniture and used to ask people who bought furniture to please bring help with them - it's just too much for me, so I understand why other dealers or mall owners would be reluctant to do it. It also seemed no matter how politely I asked people, they still showed up alone - usually women - and wanted me to help carry heavy, solid wood, antique furniture - it gets frustrating when it's person after person and they seem to disregard your having told them you aren't up to doing that sort of heavy lifting. One of the women here today also commented to us that she'd had to have major back surgery recently, so if she had chronic back problems that eventually required surgery, I can see why she wouldn't be very willing to carry furniture, either. read more

I purchased a table at this mall about three weeks ago, but was unable to take it with me at that time due to limited room in my truck. I returned there today to pick up the table and called while I was on my way there to let them know I was coming. The woman that answered the phone couldn't have been ruder when she told me that "I better have someone with me to help me move the table as they don't help their customers load." I inquired if they had an elevator since the table was located in the basement of the store and her curt response to me was "no." When I arrived, I was handed a dolly cart and told I was on my own to get it up 2 flights of stairs. Thankfully, one of the customers in the store saw me struggling with this piece and offered to help me up the stairs with it and into my truck while all the time the two women at the front counter couldn't have cared less. The woman that helped me was another local antique dealer and when I went into her shop, I then spent another $200 and made a great contact (lost business for Coachman). This is the LAST time I will EVER go to Coachman. Their customer service is horrible and the attitude of the two women that were working there today was less than courteous (more on the vicious, abusive side). Laporte is town that is struggling with this recession and there are more vacant and closed storefronts than there are ones doing business on their main drag. You would think these people would appreciate their customers and not resent people that come there from Illinois to buy. Oh, and if you're looking for a deal, forget about it... They won't go down more than 10% on any item and if it's priced low, they also refuse to contact the consigner to see what their best price would be. DONE and DONE. read more

If I could give this store zero stars I would. This business is doing their best to run their neighbors off. They make calls to the mayor's office complaining because their neighbor's business is "using up all the parking and blocking their window". Yes, they are really that petty. The public parking is for whoever parks there first. Coachman Antiques became used to other businesses on their block not using the parking on the street in front of all of the businesses and they never seemed to care before if their customers parked in front of other storefronts, it only became an issue when a new business became quite popular and people were parking LEGALLY on the street in front of their store. One of the women who works for Coachman Antiques took to a local fb group to defend her actions and to basically say that they prefer a different demographic of people around their business. She's very rude and seems to be quite stuck up. read more

I like to shop at Coachman's. They have two levels of antiques and one level of arts-and-crafts. It's very entertaining to browse around in. You can find some of the most random things there. For example, once I bought a perfectly new (and in tune) flute there. Yeah, a flute! I have also purchased a number of mid century modern dishes there. The furniture is very nice there, although I haven't purchased any here. read more

Wow, the other reviewers' comments here don't reflect (my) reality at all. This is one of the best large antique malls I've visited, and I've done most of them in NWIndiana and SWMichigan. This place is 2.5 large floors, crammed with a great variety of high quality merchandise. Prices vary, as to be expected in a consignment booth establishment, but I've found wonderful furniture items at very low prices. Excellent furniture of all periods, lots of antique décor items and oddities, booth after booth of great stuff. I don't know who the owner(s) is, but the people I've dealt with couldn't have been more helpful -- Daniel and Sharon. As an added bonus, they deliver at what must be cost -- $50 to bring an 8' bakers hutch and a few other pieces to me 45 miles away. A real antique find in the Michigan City - LaPorte area, my new favorite (and I've visited them all). The next best antique malls within 30 miles (also with a great mix) are in Lakeside and Harbert (both in Michigan). read more
