Not a bad place for tax-free shopping, although you could probably find better deals elsewhere for certain items. The Exchange here is definitely on the smaller side, but it has most items that you'll need. Because of its size, the selection of items is limited. They do try to make the most of the space so it might feel tight in between some aisles such as the clothing area. I bought a pair of sneakers here which was on clearance. While waiting for my husband to get his covid vaccine at Coast Guard Island, I checked out CGX to kill time. It is not big but nice sized and they carry various CG items! I could not resist getting a bib made of CG uniform! They have CG themed toys, kids books, and even dog clothes. A young female cashier works here is really nice and friendly. There is some sort of shady business practice going on at the tailor/dry cleaning part of this exchange. On a Friday I brought a Bravo Jacket to have the new insignias sewn on, since I needed the jacket by Monday I was charged a $20 rush fee. In addition to a $5 charge per patch for removal and the charge to sew the new ones one, coasting me a total of $70 just to have things sewn on. Didn't even get dry clenaed. After speaking to another coworker they said that last month, Connie, a worker at the exchange, took their jacket and completed the same service in addition to be dry cleaned overnight, with no rush fee. Already sounds fishy. Then, a couple days later I dropped off a single item to have insignias/name tapes sewn on and to be dry cleaned. I was told there was currently a "2 week turn around time". During this 2 week time frame I was waiting patiently for my item, another coworker informed me they dropped off their 2 blouses and 2 pairs of pants to have everything sewn on and dry cleaned, again to Connie. They were able to pick up their items 2 DAYS later. I came back exactly 2 weeks later for my item, item was not ready. I was assured it would be there the next day because it was "next in line", words from Connie herself. I ended up coming back 2 days later as I was busy, it was still not ready. I told her I needed to pick up the item the next day, as I am moving. I finally got my item back 17 days after drop off, only to realize she never wrote down for the item to be dry cleaned. So, I waited 17 days for there to be 4 things sewn on a blouse, meanwhile other members are somehow getting their 4 items in 2 days fully done and dry cleaned? I don't know who but someone needs to look into how Connie is running the Tailoring/Dry Cleaning side of the exchange. I'm frustrated and appauled at this level off service. read more

Okay for a mini-mart. Maybe you'll get a good price for a flat-screen TV. But don't go out of your way to shop here unless you're looking for Coast-Guard-specific stuff. They've got a good selection of CG shirts and gifts. And there's a reasonable selection of random cloths. The return policy on electronics makes this a BAD place to shop for electronics. One stop shop for everything you can think of and tax free! From clothing, electronics, small appliances, home furnishings, jewelry, food/beverages. Staff are courteous and friendly! They even have a Subway and 4 gas pumps right outside. read more

Compared to other CGX locations on the West Coast, about the only place I could think of with a better store that I have been to is Astoria, Oregon. However, Astoria does not have the selection of electronics that Alameda does, so that weighs in a bit. The gas station at this location is fairly priced, however, the pumps are a joke. Last two times I have been on the Island for training, the pumps either don't work - or are slower than molasses in Alaska in January. I waited around 10 minutes to pump 10 gallons into my tank - enough to get to Sacramento and fill up there. The selection is much more than you can find in Portland or Coos Bay - not sure about Petaluma, as I have not been there since they remodeled. As previously mentioned, you have to be military or have an ID card to shop here - otherwise, the prices are reasonable. Subway is a good thing, especially if you're tired of Galley chow. read more

Not the most aesthetic or grand place but now and then you'll find great deals. A nice hidden spot where you can usually find good sales during the holidays, especially for jeans, sperry's, and other clothing items. You need to have a military id card to have access though (or know someone who does). read more

Super Secret, you can only get in if you know the right peeps!! Basically a Walgreen's and Target all wrapped into one with fair prices and no taxes! Purchased a computer for about 15% cheaper than I would expect at Best Buy. Plus right down the way a full Olympic swimming pool, bbq's and grass to play! read more

Nice little shop. Great place to get discount booze or beer- their everyday prices are about the same as Safeway sale prices. Nice to be able to buy electronics without going all the way to Travis AFB. Great savings on TVs when you are also paying no sales tax. Gas is 8-10 cents per gallon cheaper than name brand gas in Alameda, maybe a penny or two cheaper than ARCO or Valero. Pumps are slow, but not that slow. In addition to the USCG uniform stuff, they have some terrible fashioned civilian clothes, some jewelry (why?) and watches, sunglasses, etc. A very limited shoe selection and some workout gear. Lots of snack and soft drinks, very few housewares - really just some soap and detergent. I went looking for glue and they didn't have. It's kinda weird how the place is set up, for instance: they have a terrible selection of batteries, yet a whole huge portion of the store is dedicated to Yankee Candles.. Not really much to complain about, it's handy to have, the Subway comes in handy once in a while, and the staff is friendly. Another bonus is the propane tank exchange - $5 cheaper than anywhere else in town! read more
