I have been a patient of Dr. Goodman for about a year now. I appreciate his and his staff's attention to his patients, which helps foster a good patient-doctor relationship. His bedside demeanor is sincere, and it's apparent that he genuinely cares about his patients' well-being. (as an aside, one minor issue is that it can sometimes be difficult to talk to someone on the phone in the office. More often than not, my call goes to voicemail, but it's also happened where the phone just rings and rings and never picks up .... so that's a bit frustrating when trying to speak with someone, whether it be a scheduler or a nurse/PA. So instead of using the phone as my primary line of communication, I use the MyScripps portal to send them a message. Everyone in the office is very good at monitoring (and responding to) portal messages. But it would be good to have a more reliable phone system for occasions where it would be nice to actually speak with someone.) Lastly, I really like doing video appointments, instead of having to drive to their office in Mission Valley for all appointments. I appreciate their offering that video appointments. read more

I have experienced effective pain relief and have had no complications. **Terrible experience - I do not recommend Dr Goodman** I went to my follow-up appointment after getting an MRI, hoping for a diagnosis. Unfortunately, the doctor had no diagnosis to offer. We discussed injections to alleviate my pain, but at no point did he mention any of the serious side effects that could come with them. After trying physical therapy for a while, I decided to return for the injection to support my recovery. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I drove over an hour to the clinic, but due to heavy traffic, I arrived 12 minutes late. I called the office on my way to let them know about the traffic, but their phones aren't available before 8 AM, and my appointment was at 7:30 AM.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]At every other clinic and doctor's office I've visited, the grace period is 15 minutes, and I was never told that this clinic's policy was 10 minutes.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Despite being just 2 minutes late, after sitting in traffic for over an hour, the doctor refused to see me. This happened after I had already checked in and paid my co-pay, which was incredibly frustrating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I decided not to reschedule. Later, I reviewed the after-visit summary from my previous appointment and saw that he claimed he had discussed all the serious side effects of the injection with me during our visit--which was absolutely untrue. On top of that, he mentioned he couldn't identify the exact location for the injection based on the screening. This entire experience was unprofessional, frustrating, and misleading. This Dr has no understanding of chronic pain. Pushes epidural steroid injections which are not FDA approved, nerve blocks, and spinal cord stimulators. I have suffered through numerous procedures with no success. The Dr. did not do a complete exam on me to access my pain. Will not help me maintain my Long Term Opioid Therapy. If You're hoping for a place that values you as a patient this is not the place to go. My doctor is good, but their system stinks. You can't get a call from a live person for weeks. Their scheduling phone system is broken. It is impossible to hear the person on their end. When I asked the scheduler, who was speaking very fast, to slow down, she hung up on me. They are now comfortable with Zoom calls and have discovered a new way to charge more patients without taking up an appointment times and are happy to throw a medical assistant at you rather than a doctor but, of course, will charge a full consulting fee for it. This is particularly disappointing sine they are treating patients in PAIN who need the best care. Instead you get something haphazard and inconsiderate. read more

The customer service is appallingly bad. No one answers at the main number. you can leave a message, but it doesn't matter, because no one will call you back. I needed a referral for physical therapy and because you have to go through the main number, it didn't happen until i actually went into the office. And even then, it was a a major hassle. Dr Goodman wanted to see me in 4 weeks, but no available appointment for 6 weeks. I have nothing to say about Dr. Goodman, but this whole nightmare has left me fuming! read more

Dr. Goodman has shown me that he really cares, not only about managing my pain but also managing my physical and psychological health. In March I was diagnosed with spinal multilevel degenerative changes, most notable at T12-L2 with disc height collapse. I am suffering from a grade 1 anterolisthesis of L5 on S1 with bilateral pars defects and large anterior osteophyte. There is severe disc height collapse and foraminal stenosis at this level. In addition, I suffer from severe right hip osteoarthritis and will be having surgery for a hip replacement soon. Dr Goodman has done a great job managing my pain level from a constant 7 or 8 to now a 5 with a combination of medications and injection. Thank you, Dr Goodman. read more

Very disorganized and opinionated. There way is the only way very rude staff and unorganized. Bathroom couldn't even wash hand absolutely gross don't go to carsbad location. Care not very good they give you the run around and push what they want and that is the only way to go even if you have proof that that way doesn't work don't suggest this place not unless you want to be dismissed and disrespected in front of your loved ones what a terrible experience. I am a retired Firefighter of 37years, I will not try to list all the injuries and surgeries I have had. You get to the point it is impossible to stay on top of pain from so many different parts of your body you just feel like your fighting a loosing battle. I came to Dr. Miller and he listened to my complete history and understood I was trying to have a better quality of life in my retirement. He treated me as though he had been my Dr. for years and let me know he could help do that. I have been with him now five years and many procedures through him, he always explains everything and gladly answers any concerns. He is the Dr. that you hope you never loose. I love that I don't have to go to his office every month. We do FaceTime visits. The Dr I had before, I completed about my shoulders for years. And he finally ordered an MRI. I have been a patient of Dr. Evan Goodman for about a year following pretty extensive spine surgery in November 2022. He is extremely knowledgeable about the issues I am going through in my recovery and has given me numerous excellent suggestions to alleviate my quite significant pain. He is helping me to cut the amount of pain medicine I use by advising and assisting me in weaning down my dosage in a safe and reasonable way. Most importantly, for me, I find him to be a very kind and caring individual who really listens to my issues and advises me accordingly. He doesn't just pay lip service. That has not been my experience at all--in fact I find his staff to be friendly, communicative and available, both on the phone and MyChart portal. Dr. Goodman has really helped me on my journey to be free (or as close as possible) of chronic pain. He really listens... I don't feel like he's getting ready to run out of the room like I've felt with other physicians. He is encouraging, informative and willing to consider my ideas. My Scripps GP referred me to Dr. Goodman for treatment for chronic debilitating eye/eye socket pain from which I've suffered for almost two decades. . I've seen 19 specialists/physicians; had endless treatments, nerve blocks, acupuncture, Botox, dozen different pain meds, Homeopathic remedies.... on and on. Dr. Goodman listened attentively to my saga and immediately set to finding a solution for me. He recommended a Sphenopalatine ganglion block. It's been a miracle, my pain has been reduced almost completely or to a very manageable level. Dr. Goodman is a most thoughtful attentive, professional specialist. My previous pain management group closed down and I was really nervous about getting a new doctor. I got a call from Coastal and set up an appointment with Dr. Goodman. What a relief! I had been "needle" adverse, but Dr. Goodman walked me thru it. It was a nerve ablation procedure. It work really well. Then I had bursitis in both hips, just before Christmas and was hobbling around. I went in and Dr. Goodman did 2 injections in the bursa joint and I was out of there in 20 minutes. I really feel like a new person. I was able to considerably reduce my pain meds and now feel a lot better and have more energy to tackle daily life! read more

If you need anything more than over the counter medication for your pain management do not waste your time or money going to this location. My Harvard trained internal medicine doctor retired this year, after seeing her for 20 years and being on the same medication without any complications, issues with addiction, liver , etc I was referred to Dr Goodmanby another Scripps physician. During initial intake he stated that it is the policy of his practice not to prescribe (barbiturates ) controlled medication. I specialize in chronic pain management and PTSD and I am very well versed in contra indications of medications. It is safe to say that a medication management regime which I have been on for 20 years without any increase in dosages of medication and/or any scientific credible based evidence such as blood work indicating harm to my liver or kidney function should be used as a base line ferrule out as to the efficaciousness to the medication. A blanket arbitrary rule is no excuse to deny medication to a cancer survivor who struggles every single day with pain to be a productive member of society. It would behove the entire practice to make a statement on their website that they do not write sciprts for certain medications and save my valuable time. read more

This review is long overdue. I was referred to Coastal Pain from my primary care provider as I have had multiple fusions and consistently experienced severe pain. I had the pleasure of being introduced to Dr. Goodman. He is a great pain specialist, compassionate, listens, and answers ALL my many questions. I have been seeing multiple Ortho surgeons at the same time and Dr. Goodman has partnered with them to achieve better clinical outcomes. I have had numerous injections/ablations/diagnostic injections performed under Dr. Goodmans care and let me say I WAS NERVOUS at first. He was calming, gentle, talked me through everything and I am no longer anxious going in for a procedure - a testament to his table/bedside manner. As we have been on my diagnostic journey, he has been supportive and my pain is managed better than ever before. I know there are lots of pre-testing / testing required for specific treatments, but it is totally understandable and I appreciate the level of safety/thoroughness. One more thing to call out - I love using the MyScripps app (EPIC) to communicate updates/questions/appointment requests. His team is extremely responsive, sometimes responding within minutes. I have been a patient at Coastal Pain for 2 years and all of the Drs there are very good. I have a choice of in person or virtual appointments, depending on what I need. They did have some phone issues, but they have improved. Most importantly to me is the quality of the Dr, especially if you are getting a procedure on your back or neck. Been dealing with chronic pain for years now and it has and still does get me frustrated and down ranging from a 5 at best to 10+ at the worst. I don't know what it's like to be pain free but I've been seeing Dr. Goodman for a while now and I have been treated with compassion and support as well as respect to my chronic pain issues. He has been a savior in helping me manage my pain and in doing so helped me with every day life. He's always very attentive and understanding to my issues. Being and dealing with pain everyday sucks but Dr. Goodman and his entire staff are amazing and awesome. Some Dr's get the rotten end of the stick at times because sometimes a patients condition and symptoms are not that simple to treat. Can't say enough about how much I appreciate him, and his staff. Though I'm not sure if I will ever be pain free but he's helped me manage it and in doing so I have a life , better than before I started seeing him.
