I've been to Coastal Vision twice this year. I've visited once for my annual exam and once for an allergy issue. I've had an easy time getting appointments. When I had an emergency they were able to fit me in for an appointment the same day. Both times I went I have been seen by Dr. Nilsson. During both of my visits, he made sure that I was educated on what was occurring and care steps that should be taken. During my emergency visit, he ensured that I was informed of all options available and the positives and negatives of each option. The issue was able to be resolved within a matter of days. Our family has been patients here since 2016. Brought our daughter in this afternoon for an urgent eye care visit. We recently had an insurance change. The insurance company assured me we were good to go. We got there and we weren't. The insurance company got it resolved but it took 45 minutes. By the time it was resolved we were told that my daughter would have to wait until the next day to be seen. No consideration for the fact that her contacts weren't working for her and she couldn't see well at all. I had walked out to call the insurance as I couldn't drop the out of pocket amount they wanted. When I came back in with a resolve I was told they had cancelled the appointment because we walked out. read more

I started going to coastal vision I few years back and my annual eye exam was always covered by my insurance. I switched insurance and was not aware the eye exams are no longer covered. Do you think the office bothered in telling us that an annual eye exams would be $143 since it's not covered under insurance? Every place I have been to (urgent care, dentist, pcp) will tell you if the visit is covered or not by insurance before rendering services! read more

I went to this location for a routine eye exam and the office is nice! It is well lit up and the customer service e is great. Ebony did my initial eye exam and checked my eye pressure. She was very informative and explained what she was about to do before doing it. I'm pregnant so she made sure I was comfortable and would ask to make sure. Her customer service was great. After working with Ebony, Dr. Gonzales entered the room. She too was very friendly, informative and gave in depth information about what she believed was going on with my vision. The person that assisted with my insurance plan, and what glasses option I had was not so informative, it felt like she was rushing through and did not want to explain much about the glasses. Even with my insurance the lens,and frames are pretty expensive. I might go elsewhere to purchase. read more

My husband and I went into the Volvo pky. office on Wednesday of this week about a half hour before closing just to make an appointment. They made an appointment for my husband the next day at 1:30. I advised the lady, I just needed glasses and contacts. My husband needed a complete exam; I only needed contacts and glasses. The next after arriving at appointment time, and my husband, filled out his paperwork. They advised me that my husband's appointment had been moved to 2:00. I filled out their paperwork for myself, they made a copy of my insurance and driver's license. The lady behind the desk informed me to give my prescription to one of the ladies over with the glasses, which I did. She made a copy of it and returned it to me. I had already picked out the frames I liked. All in an effort to save time because I had a doctor's appointment at 3:30. The office wasn't busy. Yet, no one ever approached me between other appointments, when they weren't working with another customer. Instead, they disappeared, I could hear them in the back talking and laughing as I sat there waiting to be helped. No one said anything to me until my husband asked if I had gotten my glasses after they finished fitting him, which only took about ten minutes. I responded no, and I wasn't interested at that point. I needed to get to my doctor's appointment. There was ample time to extend me the customer service that I needed. I found the frames online as I sat waiting. It was made clear to me that they were not interested in me as a customer. Businesses be mindful that customers are very aware of the environment and the silent unethical practices! read more

I'm not going to lie. When I first walked in I thought this wasn't going to be a good experience. This place popped up on my insurance site as a local location that would take my insurance for glasses. I pass by this shopping center everyday for work so I was familiar with the area and thought I would give it a shot. The receptionist asked if she could help but had a look that said I hope I can't. Her vibe had me ready to walk out the door but I really wasn't in the mood to go glasses shopping somewhere else so when she said she would get someone to help me I figured I wasn't going to have to deal with her and I was ok with that. I wasn't looking long before a gentleman came out and asked how he could help me. I explained to him I just got my prescription and that I was looking to buy a new pair of glasses and wanted to see what my prescription covered. He seemed a little hesitant at first but warmed up rather quickly They guy we ended up working with was named Chris and Coastal Vision is privately owned unlike places like Target Vision or Lens Crafters. It was pretty evident that they cater to an older clientele. As a matter of fact while we there I counted at least 4 older gentlemen who came in for various reasons. Most of them dealt with Chris and not the receptionist as I think she was really just there to answer phones. Anyway once I think Chris realized that we were really interested in purchasing glasses and not just there to waste time he started to really get into the sale and his customer service was awesome. It really turned the experience around. He helped us pick out some great frames, explained the different options in lenses in great detail, and broke down how our insurance would cover the cost and what we would have to pay out of pocket. I wish they had more of a selection for the frames. Especially for women. There were really only 2 walls and a lot looked the same. They had an interesting selection of brands but I found the frames to be a little outdated. It took me awhile to really find ones that I liked but I put in the effort because I wanted to work with Chris. The prices for the frames ranged from $165 to $245. However, I only saw one pair for $165. Most that I picked up were $198 or more. The men's frames had much cheaper pricing. My boyfriend got a pair of Oakley's for $155 and he picked up a pair of Hugo Boss frames that were only $160. After awhile of looking and with Chris' help we both found a pair that we liked and Chris explained the 2 year warranty that comes with the glasses and started setting everything up and confirmed our measurements. He was gracious enough to work with us past closing as the receptionists walked out exactly at 6pm without even a Have a good evening. Lol oh well. Chris made the whole experience anyway. We got some great frames and I have no doubt that we're going to love our glasses when they come in because Chris really took the time to make sure we were getting not just what we wanted but what we really needed. I definitely would recommend this place especially if you like the style of your glasses simple. This place doesn't over do it and definitely ask for Chris. He knows what he's talking about and will make great recommendations for you based on your needs. read more

My son got his glasses here back in September as his first pair had an amazing experience and was told there was a warranty on his glasses. So I go to the Suffolk location (since that's right by where I live) and I put in a claim for a new pair on 12/29/2023. Today is 1/19/2024 and I called thinking that 3 weeks is an awfully long time for glasses to be made. And apparently his glasses got sent to the Chesapeake location since that's where he started since the other location didn't have an availability for an eye exam. So never received a text or call to let me know his glasses were in. If it wasn't for the warranty on his glasses I would never set foot back at any of these locations. read more

They were great and quick, I have some eye irritation and wanted it looked at. They don't take walk ins but we're able to double book me and see me right away. Very clean and nice atmosphere. They didn't find any abrasions or foreign objects in my eye so they prescribed me some eye drops and gave me a free sample of eye lubricant. Will be going there for annual checkups. read more

We have had several bad experiences here. Appointments were on wrong days; appointments were not made for the correct reason (I even spelled the type of exam needed as it was not a run-of-the-mill exam); some of the staff are extremely unprofessional; etc. Waited over two months for appointment. Saw doctor (who was great) and subsequently ordered glasses for my daughter. When I went in to pick them up, someone handed me a bag with the glasses and walked away. I checked them before leaving to find that they weren't the glasses we chose. I waited until someone would help me and they said they would re-order them and I would be called when they came in. I didn't hear back so I called and was told they had come in but were the wrong color so they ordered them again . I received a call the glasses were in - but turned out they were still the wrong color. I called again asking for status and was told someone would call me back - they didn't. I finally spoke with an Office Manager who said she would call lab, etc. and call me back. I haven't heard back from her. The glasses finally came in and I went and checked them yesterday. Office said they would mail them and daughter should receive them next day (to make up for my trouble). I was to be called in the afternoon and given the tracking information. I was not called back. Called office again today and no information was available and was told "someone with that information will call you back." Only to find out that the Only person who knows what is going on is working at another location today so who knows when/if they will get the message and if I will actually receive a call back! This is absolutely ridiculous! I have no idea where the glasses are and have little hope that someone will magically call me back after leaving a message as this has yet to be the case. Also learned that when you order frames from Coastal Vision, you are given the ones you looked at from their selection - not new frames, the frames from the wall. I haven't ever had this experience with another company so don't know if this is something new that every business is doing or not. read more

It's tough for me to give a bad review. I really had hopes for this place as it is so close to my office! However, one should really report uncomfortable atmosphere and bad customer service. Doctor was great, but optical/frame staff was not a pleasant experience. Right after my exam they assigned me to a young lady who just pointed at the wall and said, pick what you want. No help, no advice on how they look, when I sat down she didn't even speak, she just calculated the bill and asked how I wanted to pay. 2.5 weeks later, no glasses. I called and left voice mails twice, no return phone calls. I finally got a call that one pair was in and one was shipped back due to scratches. Went to get the one pair and waited 20 minutes while watching the same optical/frame person try on glasses for herself and a friend and take selfies of herself. A lady in her late 80's was also waiting, I felt very sorry for her because she was concerned why nobody was helping her. They didn't even acknowledge our presence. As if it couldn't get worse another lady came over, got my glasses and handed them to me in a bag and said, we'll call you when the other pair arrives. No fitting, no trying them on, just handed them to me in a bag. This was not because I offended anyone, I hadn't even spoken and I was dressed nicely in my work attire, greeted the front desk, filled out my Covid checklist and sat down. Well, today it's 34 days and I still don't have my glasses, nobody has called. I finally called today and magically they are in, I can come get them. read more

Got my beautiful high quality glasses and lenses. My doctor, Dr. Scott Nilsson, was excellent once we connected. He even gave me discount coupons for my eye solution. The office was beautiful, the Optition who helped me pick out my frames, she was also very nice. I love this operation. Before I used a really cheap place, but I couldn't see out of the glasses, even though I went back a few times. Took my 4 year old here for a vision exam. I've been to other places that didn't know how to treat children. Dr. Tohmasian was great with my son and had no issues getting him to do the exam. Great place and would recommend it highly for children. read more

I've been a customer/patient for 3 years there now and gotten 2 pairs of glasses and 2 sunglasses (all prescription of course). Previously went to a chain in greenbrier mall which I was never really happy with, they couldn't get my prescription right.. Doctors are great but what's more they have good prices and products and last I checked free warranty on damaged lenses or frames (which I needed 2 yrs ago after an accident). Have referred several coworkers and family members who also have been happy with them. read more

I am extremely disappointed with this office. In 2017, I saw Dr Scott Nilsson for an annual eye exam and eyeglass prescription and I was very happy. In 2018, I went back for my annual exam and saw his partner, Dr Beach. Absolutely nothing had changed. I do have spots on my retina called drusen, which is nothing new. It does not affect my vision and it is nothing that I require treatment for. I have had these spots for many years and was once told that I may have been born with them. I go to the optometrist annually to update my eyeglass prescription and purchase new glasses. I always use my vision insurance and pay my required copay. I was completely baffled when Dr Beach sent me a bill for $185.12 a couple of months after my 2018 visit. I called his office to inquire and was told that Dr Beach codes differently than Dr Nilson. Really?! A perfectly reasonable person would expect to be billed the same way for the same service, regardless which optometrist in the practice they see. Perhaps Dr Beach was attempting to generate additional revenue by portraying to my insurance company that he was "treating" my drusen. He was/is not. I am appalled at this arbitrary and consumer unfriendly billing method. I truly am. I went there because it was close to my new home, however, I will be heading back to my old optometrist in Virginia Beach next year, where I was never charged anything over and above my vision insurance copay. I advise all clients looking for an optometrist to avoid Coastal Vision. WATCH OUT!!! read more
