We've been coming to the area for years and this place got decent reviews. We didn't expect much but were hopeful. The positives-seated right away! Not expecting that for how full the parking lot was or on a holiday week. The waitress was nice but super slow service. She didn't check back often and we had to look for her to get anything we needed or our bill. We started with fried pickles and cheese curds. Both were standard bar food and perfectly fine. No complaints. Most of our party got chicken wings, some boneless and some not, and fries. I ordered a burger and Mac and cheese. Chicken ok, fries ok, Mac n cheese meh. The burger felt more like a fast food joint, as they had to bring out mayo and mustard because they don't put it on for you. It ended up a sloppy mess. Lastly cocktails. We ordered some pretty basic mixed drinks and they were awful. Didn't finish. I would say the vibe is so casual that for the money, you're better off doing Ricks's or another pub on the island where service is better and it's more of a dining experience instead of fast food. We visited Surf City in mid October, as things were slowing down after the summer months. But there was nothing slow about the service here. It's prompt, friendly and attentive. I ordered the pork belly and cheese curds, as well as the smoked wings and mac & cheese (which I was so excited to eat that I forgot to snap a pic of, which RARELY happens). The meal was great. Amazing flavors that packed a punch. My only complaint is that it was really chilly in the restaurant for some reason, and I was shivering the entire time (even with my jacket) while eating my wings. Overall, the employees are very kind and working hard but I left with a literal bad taste in my mouth. The service was very slow. When I finally got my food, my party and I were very disappointed. Person #1 got a salad and said that the sauce burned their mouth and was utterly disgustes. It tasted like chili powder and strong vinegar, which was not the buffalo sauce listed on the menu. This use to be our favorite place to eat but in the last year things have been slowly going down hill. The last time we placed an ordered , I ordered the same thing a ALWAYS ordered. The buffalo chicken salad ( let me add that it WAS always fantastic) The lettuce was so soggy. There was a bunch of water in the bottom of my dish. The wings were dry when they used to come saucy and delicious. So I ended up calling, management was nice. She apologize. She wasn't sure what happened. Said it might've just been an off night. Please give us another try. Fast-forward a couple of months to tonight placed a take out order arrived before it was ready. We literally live four minutes from the restaurant when we got home it was a disaster. The fries were cold and tasted old. My daughter's wings were cold. My husband's chicken sandwich bun was soggy and wet and my buffalo chicken salad was again nasty again . The lettuce was gross. My wings were dry and cold, and there was probably two small handfuls of lettuce in there, which is not what you used to get. It was just a disaster all around. Tried to call. No answer. I come here a lot to eat. Not sure what is going on today with their service. 3/4 of the tables/bar are empty. Two staff members are sitting at the bar. The bar tender is just standing there. The host is just standing there. The poor skinny waitress is busting her but doing all the work. It yook forever to order. Then it took forever to get my drink. The food came out quickly and was delicious. NO WORKING BATHROOMS RIGHT NOW!!! I have sticky hands after all the wings (best in town).... can't wash them. Two Dr. Peppers.... can't take a leak. I got food from here for the first time during my birthday camping trip. All of our orders were picked up by my husband and son and brought back to our campsite. The steak tacos I ordered had no sauce on them. They were advertised on the menu as having an aioli sauce on them. There was also barely any steak. The meat that was there was cooked well with a good flavor. It was mostly lettuce on the three tacos. $16.50 is overpriced for mostly lettuce tacos.I won't be going back. read more

It has become a tradition for us to visit Coastal when we visit the beach. We tried them their first year open (2019) and loved our experience- specifically the turkey leg (no longer available), the Western BBQ bacon burger, and the sweet tea. Their tots and fried pickles were also delicious. The pulled pork nachos appetizer was also a winner at the time. The last two times we've visited, the food was not as good (cold pulled pork and cheese on nachos, etc.) and the service was poor. It takes 45 minutes to an hour to get food, so be prepared and don't go hungry. Surf City location: This time (2024), we were seated immediately in a bustling and busy atmosphere. Vinny took excellent care of our table, but definitely seemed overworked/stressed. It seemed like they were short staffed. Fortunately, our food this time was very good (marked improvement from our last two visits). Everyone enjoyed their food. A few notes to be aware of: Extra charges for sauces whereas they used to come with/be free if asked for The amount of meat seemed small for the "meat plates" Ribs seemed less meaty than they should be for the price Both my friend and I ordered our burgers cooked medium and they came to us over medium well. The flavor was still good, but for the price, I expect accuracy. If I were to return without the nostalgia of the group visiting for memories, I would stick to appetizers and drinks rather than having a meal. I just don't know if the food you get plus the service you receive is worth the money they're asking. Note that there is a new location of this restaurant in Sneads Ferry. We tried to go there first a different day this week and the young man at the host stand warned us that he could seat us, but no food was coming out of the kitchen. We looked around and realized almost no one in the restaurant had food. The restaurant was full of people. We left and went to a different restaurant that night. We really want to support this business- we have good memories and enjoy our time together when we come. We like the menu! I hope they figure out how to staff and serve well consistently. Smoked dry rub wings are definitely worth making a trip to Costal Wing & Spirits. I'm not even a big wine fan, but these wings were good! Plenty of meat on the wings with a dry rub that had a nice mix of savory with a hint of sweetness. I also ordered the tuna tacos which were packed full of tuna. I didn't care for the bacon bits on the tuna, the dressing on the tuna brightened the dish and added nice flavor. Came here for dinner on Saturday evening around 7pm. There was about a 45 minute wait for a table of 3. Most of the workers were friendly but our waitress didn't seem the friendliest. Dinner with my niece and nephew, he chose Coastal and we had a great time. It's a bit casual and not terribly expensive spot which is nice since I picked up the check! I had the boneless wings. A nice big pile that were fresh and hot, tossed in their Buffalo sauce. They weren't very spicy and that's something they need to work on. But the request for all celery was nice and the blue cheese had actual chunks of blue cheese in it. The restaurant was a little drafty with the air conditioning blowing pretty hard on the table. I visited this place on a Saturday night, and even though they seemed a bit busy, we were able to get a table with very little wait. The place has a rustic/beachy/sports bar feel. It was pretty loud inside, between all the people, music and TV's, but we tend to go towards these type of places since we also have loud kids with us. The waitress came to take our drink order and told us right away of the items that they were out of. I ordered the blood orange cider to drink and I must say it was the best cider I've ever had! While there we were informed they had run out of bitters for the old fashioned that someone in our party was having, so one of the employees ran out to the store to get more. As an appetizer we shared the fried pickles. The portion was large enough for four people, and it tasted pretty good! As an entree I had the Nashville Hot Chicken Mac and Cheese bowl with ranch. It was extra cheesy and the chicken came in big sized nuggets, that were actually hot! Coastal Wing & Spirits was recommended by our Airbnb host as having the "best dry rub wings on the planet" and wow was she right! We also enjoyed the smoked wings with Alabama white sauce. They have a good portion of drink options and a lot of food options. The person at the bar helping us was really attentive and helpful. She got us our drinks right away and appetizers and food put in. Liked all the sports options on the tv and food came out right away. They have seating outside which is nice as well. My buddy grabbed steak tacos while I had wings. Both were cooked to order and better than expected. He noted copious portions of well seasoned meat in the soft flour tortillas racked up next to the homemade chips and fresh pico. I applaud the dry rubbed crispy bone in wings. The savory spices balance well with ranch dressing rounded out with the fall off the bone consistency which made for quick work of eating! I want to give a fair review but an honest review. I will start by saying I ordered from the website online. I selected order online from the surf city location. Me and the other 6 people ordered our meals all using this same concept and paid. It seemed easy as could be. That's where things went sideways. I arrived at the Surf City location and we asked for our order and he said they had "just turned on the online ordering". He looked at our order and noticed that the order was sent to the Sneads Ferry location. Apparently the app automatically changed the location to Sneads Ferry even after selecting Surf City for the order "online from" selection. We collectively ordered about $150 worth of food that we were now about 25 min from, and then another 35 back to our house. We called Sneads Ferry and explained and asked if they could cancel the order so we could place it at Surf City (still wanted to support the business). They denied it and we were not going to be out that much money. We drove to Sneads Ferry and while heading there, checked again to see if it auto changed it. Throughout the ride, we did it several times, selecting Surf City and it automatically changed to Sneads Ferry. We got to Sneads Ferry 25 min later, about 30 min after our order was supposed to be ready. We explained it and showed it to the host with the app and how it changed and only says the location in a very small area in the order completion form which was and would be easily looked past. His response was "hm, I've never seen that before. That's crazy. Let's go talk to my boss". We walked to the bar and spoke with a female who appeared to be annoyed just by our presence. We tried to show her and even the host had seen how it auto corrected. As we tried it in front of her, everything worked fine. We selected surf city and it did not change. She went right back to her business and the guy said you can go to the front and get help checking out. We weren't looking for free food. We were looking for hot food and fresh food. We didn't get it. We paid our money, drove 35 min back to south Topsail where we were staying which was much much closer to Surf City...which is why we selected Surf City. The food was very good. We all could not deny that. But unfortunately the fried pickles were soggy (still flavor wise good, but soggy and not texture good). The steak tacos were good as well, and the Nashville chicken was said to be the best one they ever had. Overall I give the food the potential for 6 out of 5 stars, it was that good. But the problem was it was not hot. It was 1 hour old when we took the first bite and didn't get to experience the food as good as it could be. The actual location in Surf City was very cool. Nice inside, with a decent amount of tables and cool atmosphere. The Sneads Ferry location was also very nice inside, but I liked the location in Surf City more. Ultimately, I can't give a perfect or great review as I feel they really could have done something as a business to make right of this issue that was caused by their own site or at least provided hot food. We visited the Sneads Ferry location, which was awesome, so figured this one would be the same but boy were we wrong. The first red flag was waiting about 15 min for drinks, and then another 45 for food when it wasn't even all that busy. Mind you we also ordered 2 kids grilled cheese, and a salad so i'm not sure why it could have taken so long. The waitress came by once after someone else had dropped the food by, and then took another 3x for her to realize that we had cleaned up the table and were waiting for the check. These are a family favorite for me and my family of 5. The staff is very friendly and has often allowed us to sample before we purchase (what they can, drinks wise). If I could give this place a 1/2 a star I would. There was three adults in our party, we arrived shortly after 5pm. Only a few people were sitting at the bar and one table of people outside. Caitlin was our server and she didn't disappoint. She told us what her favorites were and some went with her suggestions. We ordered the Jumbo Bavarian pretzel as an appetizer it was good. Plenty big enough to share for the table. The pretzel was extra large with a buttery coating, lightly salted with a side of beer cheese. We ordered beers, garlic Parmesan wings, a Philly cheese steak with a Cesar salad, a Mac and cheese bowl with boneless wings. We had to wait for awhile for our food. In the meantime another staff member came to the table and informed the person in our party there is no romaine lettuce left can they substitute iceberg. So she received a bowl of iceberg lettuce and a few croutons. The NC "gumbo" wings were flavorless. No parm or garlic flavor. The skin was not crispy but the wings weren't dry. They are not "gumbo" at all. They looked silly on the tray with carrots, celery and ranch. The carrots were not edible, they were white and dried out. I guess the cook doesn't know that peeled carrots should be store in water. The Philly cheese steak said it was thinly sliced with peppers, onions, beer cheese and provolone. She opted for just onions and provolone. The sandwich had chopped meat and barely any cheese on it. If there were onions she couldn't tell. She also said her sandwich was tasteless. And very unappealing. Maybe the beer cheese would have added more flavor but true Philly cheese steak lovers like either provolone or whiz not both. The hot chicken Mac and cheese bowl came out in a metal bowl with boneless wings in top. He was hungry so he said it was edible and he had no complaints.
