While in school, I learned a lot about farm-fresh food and what that exactly meant. Apparently once you've tasted produce straight from the vine, you'll never go back. But as a kid, I never really had the opportunity to visit a farm or even grow my own fruits and vegetables. Living in constant suburbia meant frequent trips to Ralph's or Safeway. That all changed last Sunday when I picked my very own strawberries with my girlfriend at Swanton Berry Farm. After hearing my boss boast about picking 12 pounds (!!!) of the juiciest and most delicious strawberries, I knew I had to go. And what better person to take then my girlfriend who was a HUGE fan of strawberries. So Swanton Berry Farm is a local supplier of fresh and organic fruits along the beautiful coasts of Northern California. They have two locations for Berry picking: Coastways Ranch is next to Ano Nuevo State Park (which you should go to!) and The Farm Stand is a bit further south right outside Davenport. The main difference between the two is that the latter is only open for picking on weekdays (although you can purchase stuff everyday) whereas Coastways is accessible during the weekends from 10am-5pm. Really sweet deal since you can pretty much pick during any day of the week! We ended up visiting Coastways Ranch since it was a Sunday. Getting here was actually kind of a doozy for us. Though the drive was very scenic, it took a little over an hour from the South Bay Area. And that's because the only "quick" way to the coast was south on Highway 17 and back north up Highway 1. GPS came in handy, and there were fortunately signs directing where to go. If y'all get lost, just note that the ranch is around 10 miles north of Davenport. Besides the drive, hardest part was making into the parking lot because it's about a half mile of unpaved dirt. Have to drive slow otherwise you'll go into a ditch! Now if all this sounds too stressful, hear me out; it was SO WORTH THE JOURNEY. Once we got out of the car, we were greeted by ROWS UPON ROWS of strawberries - far as my tiny eyes could see. Immediately after we got our sturdy box from the stand, we washed our hands (there's a station) and immediately started picking as many as we could. Because we came right in the middle of the season (around summer), the strawberries were SO AMAZING. They came in all kinds of sizes. Some were a bit riper than others, so there was plenty of variety to choose from. We were allowed to sample however much we wanted before paying as long as we didn't waste anything. And by golly I filled my tummy and our box like no tomorrow because these were HANDS DOWN BAR NONE the BEST strawberries I've ever had in my life. The size, sweet taste, and color - these characteristics were so different and much more authentic compared to what you'd find in the store. For example, these strawberries were much smaller since they weren't pumped with growth hormones. True to what I'd learned in school, I'll probably never look at store bought strawberries again. After an hour of picking, we pretty much filled our entire box. It came out to be about 4 freaking pounds so use that as a measuring stick. I highly recommend only getting as much as you can eat in like a week since these suckers go bad FAST (or just freeze). Cost was $5 a pound ($4.5 if you get over 10 pounds) so we paid around $19. The guy at the stand actually gave me more money back in change, and I thought that was VERY generous of him! Farmers are a godsend I tell y'all. Truth be told, I never really cared about strawberries until my experience at Swanton Berry Farm. Sure, I thought they were really nice fruits but I wouldn't go out of my way to get them. Now, however, I am SO DOWN to drive over an hour to pick strawberries because Coastways Ranch and Swanton Berry Farm were definitely worth an "Omg, I'd travel 2 hours for this" rating. BAD experience. Not because the strawberries are small and not sweet (Kinda expected that because it's not strawberry season) BUT because they are DISHONEST. Got 8 strawberries only because the strawberries weren't that sweet, went to pay, got charged HALF A POUND ($5/lb, 0.5lb for $2.5). Found it really weird that 8 small strawberries costs $2.5. We ended up here after swinging by the Swanton Berry Farm just ten minutes south. THIS is the place to be for strawberry picking! Come here for the fruit, then go down there for the pies and ready-made foods. The fields here are SOOO much bigger and it's a beautiful scene to see the strawberry fields going all the way down to the pond. When you enter, you'll drive by their commercial farms and then to the patch for public picking. After seeing the sad strawberries at Swanton, these were just amazing - all were plump, bright red, with healthy green stems, and there were tons of strawberries! You can't help but pick them all. $4 a pound, which you pay for at the stand. I managed to bring these home in my purse on a plane (they got a bit smooshed) but my mom reported that two weeks later they were still ultra fresh. Families had brought kids and picnic lunches. Came on Sunday at 3pm. Crowded, but we managed to pick 2 lbs of fresh organic strawberries. We wanted to pick more, but it's so warm that we weren't sure how long they can stay fresh. So, it's $5/lb. Came home and already finished a pound. We should have gotten 10 pounds. So sweet and fresh! Staff is nice and friendly. We brought our own bag, so we just started picking when arriving and went to them to weigh and pay. Watch out for "no picking" sign because the staff will come over unhappily and tell you to not pick on the side you are picking. There are signs all over, so we should honor them. If you're doing over 45 mph, you will have to slam on the breaks and do some Japanese auto geek style drifting with your A$N rice rocket, and break a left into a sand/dirt path, so ease off the gas trigger and get ready to do it smoothly without compromising the integrity of your vehicle. Locate your parking spot, then walk up past the porta-potties. To the left across, is the checkout/weigh stand. Get yourself some cardboard lids and plastic net boxes for the strawberries. You might want to use two lids, with one to cover the berries as it may get windy up there. Then hike yo ass up the terrain, and enjoy. It's a very nice and calming view, and it can get windy or foggy. Organic strawberries run $2.50 a pound, same price as last year. Cash only of course. The Swanton guys also sell their excellent tasting jars of Swanton Berry Farm jams, with some samples you can try (strawberry is superb, blackberry is not bad). They're $6 each, although you can also ahem...buy them at Whole Foods for the same price :-o A few more notes: - the berries come in various shapes and sizes, but as of Memorial Day weekend, a lot of them are fugly looking mishapened runts. Do not discriminate, you will be surprised at how excellent some of the darker toned smaller ones are, packed with sweetness with a little tart to boot. -Don't wear sandals or your favorite Manolo's. Some of the ditches get wet from rain or irrigation. You have been warned -Bring some water with you if you want to rinse and sample the goodness. -Be patient, don't immediately rummage through an entire row in the middle section (the front is obviously overpicked by now). You may find hidden gems in the back, or in random places. Don't overpick, you may end up wasting what you don't need, in which case it's a loss for both parties. -If you don't see it immediately, gently wave your hand through the leaves and stems, you might find a little treasure here and there on the inside, sheltered from view. Hwy 1 is so pretty with the beach and ocean views! Hwy 84 has some gorgeous greenery and fun windy roads to drive on!! We just went to pick lots of strawberries here ($2.50)!! This place has Olallieberries. It is like a raspberry. These little babies are annoying to pick. Make sure you bring water and walk as far away from the entrance. Back there is more better berries. Since the closer to thr entrance, people have already taken them. This is a much slower picking rate. Only grab the black ones. They are sweet. Anything else, even purple will taste bitter. In response to Felicia's comments: If you look up the definition of 'mean high tide' you will find that beaches in CA are open to the public up to 'the mean high tide level'. If you can get there from the water, tidelands, or an adjacent beach you are legally allowed to be there, but only as long as you don't venture onto the land above where high tide would be. The beach just north of our beach is public property. This may be the cause of your confusion. My grandparents bought this farm and adjoining beach in 1917. . Since I was a child we have often given permission to people to visit the beach. I am not aware of anyone ever being kicked off the beach unless they were causing a serious problem. Our family for years has picked up garbage, broken glass, etc. left behind by others. When you refer to our family asking for support for the ranch at this time, please consider that we are trying to preserve the farmland remaining on the coast, and that many of the farmers in that area suffered badly from the fires and are struggling financially. read more

Got there around 10:30 am, and we already saw a lot of people picking fresh organic strawberries from the field. We went to pick up our box and were told to give one a try first before we start picking, just to make sure we like it. We tried one and it was so sweet and flavorful! We then tried to find a row where there were fewer people and started picking our own strawberries. The kid was having lots of fun, and the weather was perfect. We made sure to only pick the ones that are ready so nothing goes to waste. These strawberries have gotta be one of the best I have ever had. I will definitely come back next year to get some more! I truly dislike giving any sort of negative reviews but the way I was treated needed to be addressed. My family and I were driving along the coast this past weekend and we spotted this place along the way. We thought it would be a fun idea to check it out and pick up some organic strawberries. I was excited since this was my first time ever getting to pick my own in a vast field. As soon as we arrived, the man standing by the front area of the check out didn't even welcome us. Instead, he told us we had 15 minutes to pick and pointed to the top of the field for picking. He explained the areas that weren't allowed for picking as well. All in a unfriendly and unwelcoming tone. My family and I took the direction and went off picking in the area that was allowed. I started to wander off further up (same vicinity allowed for picking) because I spotted another couple in the same area. I heard someone yelling below but I didn't think they were calling out to me. My family then came over to pick with me when we heard the yelling again and my husband realized it was the man yelling at us. I then realized I missed the sign that said no picking in the area I was at. We ended up finishing and my husband went down to the checkout to pay first... my son and I followed soon after. I spotted the man at the check out and I apologized for not hearing him calling out to me. He replied, "Yeah sure," coldly. At first I thought he was joking but as I kept looking at him, he glared at me. I then stated that I missed the sign that said no picking and that I didn't do it on purpose. He replied back, "Sure you did. Up and down four times." (something to that extent) and I do recall hearing him say he could have charged us. Basically he was calling me a liar which was out of line after I went up to him and apologized. I was completely pissed off at this point but held my cool since he did have an infant he was taking care of. But honestly, what an unprofessional inexperienced owner. He needs to learn that you need to treat people with respect. Especially since he has other strawberry businesses in the same location for competition. Strawberries were overall okay. Quite small and not as sweet. Also, he charges by the pound. The boxes you have to use are weighed in as well which adds to the weight of the strawberries which is unfair. You get to take the box home. I'd rather have a plastic bag which would be lighter and barely add to the cost. Even thought the price ended up being $5.00 for the pound plus the box, they were quite small and not as sweet which was disappointing. Again, this was my first time ever picking strawberries and this man truly ruined my first experience. I will definitely not be back and will be letting others know not to give their business to this place. If you can, bring your own plastic bag for picking so you don't have to use a heavy box for weigh in. But if you want my opinion, try another place along the way. Olallieberries at $4 per pound U-pick. As of July 7th there were plenty of berries for the diligent pickers. They aren't "plentiful" -- you'll have to root around for the best berries, but they are tasty, organic and just waiting for you to take them home. I'd bring your own pail -- they just have cardboard flats that are a bit cumbersome. And if you're worried about stained fingers, wear tight fitting gloves. It's delicate precision work and loose fitting gloves won't be suitable. Doggies welcome on the road surrounding the patch, but not amongst the berries while you pick. read more

There is no shop per se, but you can get a few things like jam and so forth here. I picked a bunch of leaves for tea and they didn't bat an eye when I was rung up. They have red wagons you can borrow two if you don't want to carry your pickings. Coastways Ranch is an U-Pick operation affiliated with Swanton Berry Farm, which is further south in Davenport. Coastways is very easy to access as it is right off of Highway 1, but I suppose easy to miss as the signage is inadequate and you'll be traveling at freeway speeds. Once you pass Ano Nuevo State Park the driveway into the ranch appears on the left, so slow down. The car park is a dirt lot, and then it is an easy walk to the berry groves. On the day of our visit, the 4th of July, olallieberries, tayberries and blackberries were in season and available to be picked. Cardboard flats for depositing picked berries into are available at the weigh station; I believe receptacles of your own are allowed also. An hour or so of berry-picking was an enjoyable excursion, and having fresh ripe berries to eat for days afterward has been a delight. The cost is $7-something per pound. I wish we'd thought to bring a cooler of ice along to stow the fruit immediately in, especially as we were not heading right home. Conditions were dusty, though at other times can be muddy I understand--so dress suitably. read more

We went here today, as a stop on our tour of the coastline. It was pretty quiet so we got to pick at our leisure. When we arrived we were saw clear signs towards the entrance, and directions/tips for picking. There was a single man working, but he was kind and gave us directions for which field to pick at. There were lots of signs and cones indicating which fields were u-pick. He let us know how much it would be with a visual box to show how much 1 lb of strawberries was. (it was 4.50 per pound) There were also portable toilets and a hand washing station. Didn't use them but it all seemed well kept. Also picnic tables if you brought a lunch to sit and eat. I have come before in the winter to pick kiwis & another farm owned by the same people for berries. Be sure to check what is in season/open for U-pick before you drive because the kiwi and ollolieberries have had some problems the last few seasons. Decided to do a little day trip down the coast to pescadero to see if we could get away from the heat. The good thing about this one as opposed to the swanton farms down the road is that this one is about 15 minutes closer to half moon bay. The cons is this one is only open Fri, Sat, Sunday. I didn't want to travel all the way down to davenport so we went to this location. Parking is a little far from the picking area. The day we went we were told to go up the hill. They let us use a little wagon and our toddler loved pulling it hill and riding along as well. The strawberries are the chandler variety which are a little smaller but sweeter than these huge ones you would get at the store. We actually grow the same in our backyard except for the fact that we only get about 6 strawberries a month that are ripe LOL. I guess the crazy thing with strawberrries is that some are ripe and some aren't, you've got to pick the best ones. They charge $4/lb and they give you a large flat box to pick. If you pick more than 10lbs, they lower the price to $3.50/lb. Cash or check only. The strawberries are organic. Just make sure to set your expectations that these will be smaller in size then your typical market strawberries. If you set your expectations and know what to expect it is a fun little activity. Make sure to try them out while picking. We probably spent 15 minutes there. read more

Wear old shoes. As neat as the strawberry rows are don't be fooled some spots are muddy and there are mashed up strawberries everywhere. 2. If your going strawberry picking wear shorts or black pants. If you don't by the end of the day your pants will be pink from the calves down. The Beatles sang "Strawberry Fields Forever" well so are strawberry stains. 3. If you are going ollalieberry picking wear latex or nitrate gloves to avoid berry stained hands. 4. A box lid for picking is a must. Pass Yelp reviews suggested bringing you own to avoid paying for one but I noticed the farm was giving out lids for free. 5. Bottle water to rinse you hands and your berries for tasting. 6. Talk to strangers. I know your mother told you not to but this is the place to ignore that rule. You'll see a lot of people with 10 box lids of berries or more. Ask them "What are you going to do with your berries?" You'll hear stories of pie recipes passed down through the generations, homemade jams as Xmas gifts and get helpful hints on the best way to freeze the berries. You might get lost finding this place, as we did because Google maps doesn't get it right. When we finally reached at about 1pm, the place was crowded and parking was a bit tight. Lesson learned, go earlier. Also the bigger strawberries were all long gone. But there was still enough to go around and even the tiniest ones are sugar sweet. It gets windy, so a jacket is good. There's place for a short lunch break on the grass before you head off. Beware though, you might just end up eating more than you pick, once you've tasted these red delights. Lovely for kids. I really like these guys (and the associated Swanton farms). Veerrry laid back Norcal sort of vibe here. We had been to pick olallieberries several times in the past and just went this weekend for kiwi fruit. It's really nice picking the kiwi - they grow up at arm level or higher, so there's no stooping. The price was $1.50/pound, which is more than fair for organic kiwi, and I can't think of a better way to spend a nice winter day than head down to the coast and pick kiwi. As of Apr. 14, 2017 the price is $4.5/lb. for self-pick up, which is totally insane. No advertised pricing. I was not given any discounts for quantity, as the other reviewers from the previous year. With that price of good Australian meat for 1 lb the taste is a little better than one of potato. Good texture, not spongy, but this is it. No flavor, no sweetness. You can have the same stuff from any other store or stand, no need to drive there. read more

We went to Coastways Farm on the opening day to pick Olalaberries. We picked organic berries and paid in cash. When we got home, we realized that we had been charged for 12 pounds of berries and paid about $50.00. We had half of that amount. It was very clear that we were overcharged. We immediately sent an email to the owner with pictures and asked for a response. We have since sent 2 more emails and never received a response back. It was extremely disappointing and I would advise anyone going there to really watch out for the poor business practice. We were there today. Nice spot, families enjoying a day out. Got to the shack to weigh out and the lady in front had four half filled flats and a couple kids. 80 bucks. She seemed shocked. We weighed out two half full flats 50 bucks. Double what they cost in the store and we did the work. Wont do this again thank you ps, i saw another post say 4 bucks a pound for strawberries. I hope I'm reviewing this correct location. This u pick farm has two different sections, the kiwi's are in one area, and then you drive down the highway a bit further, and that is where one picks the strawberries. The place where you pick the strawberries is in an amazing location, right along the coast where there is a picnic bench. There was a plethora of strawberries to chose from when the group was there. Strawberries happen to be one of my favorite fruits/berries that there is. It's fun to go out there and pick fruit with a group of people. I highly reccomend going here, the prices are very reasonable. read more

Went picking here for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. Ollaberries and tayberries were available, although the ollaberries seemed at the tail end of their season. Good access to the rows and the vines are well maintained making picking easy. Get there when they open if you intend to really get enough berries for jam making as the rows can become quickly picked over. Portapotties are on site. I took my 8 year old and a friend and my 2 year old to Coastways to pick strawberries this past weekend (late July). We had a blast. It took 90 minutes to get there from Oakland down route 1. Beautiful drive and definitely worth it. This is strictly berry picking; there's no petting zoo or store or snack bar. The view is gorgeous - right on the ocean. The berries were ripe and plentiful. They have wagons to haul around your berries and flats with handles. You can keep the box for an extra 50 cents. The berries were not cheap but they were delicious and it was really fun. They have three picnic tables that are not shaded. There is a lot of poison oak on the perimeter so be careful. I am withholding one star due to the condition of the portapotties. Stinky, no toilet paper, no water from the pump thing, and no paper towels. read more

We went to strawberry picking last weekend. The place is easy to find on Google map, no problem. The parking space is a little muddy, but you cannot ask too much for a farm. The small hill is full of strawberry and kids enjoy picking them up. The price is $4 per pound. read more
