Came for their fall farm field day, my friend is a member of their CSA box and invited me to attend with him. The field day was a way for members to check out the farm and enjoy a tour. Aside from the tour of the property they also had u-pick apples, a pumpkin patch, a small farm stand set up, and the option to buy lunch. We opted in for the lunch because everything (aside from chicken) was made with ingredients from the farm! It was cool to see exactly where all of the produce that we got to enjoy came from. It was all so fresh and flavorful. I'll definitely be keeping my eye out for them at local farmers markets! read more

We signed up for the CSA this year based on the great produce we've always seen from them at the San Mateo farmer's market, and it's really changed the way we eat. My husband is well known amongst our friends and acquaintances for disliking vegetables with some he'll "tolerate" and others that he flat out refuses to even touch with a fork. The CSA allows us to customize our share each week so I can make sure we don't get something he'll refuse to eat. I can also add to my CSA share each week which I've done several times to bulk up on seasonal items. Everything we've gotten has been incredibly good. My favorites are the strawberries, lettuce, cabbage, and tomatoes. I've also found that the produce doesn't go bad as quickly compared to the grocery stores and some other popular stands from the farmer's market. With such great tasting produce, it's really allowed me to increase my husband's vegetable intake. The CSA pickup location is closer than the farmers market which is nice. In addition, I can add on flowers, beans, and the occasional eggs. They also partner with own of my favorite regenerative ranches - Markegard - to provide grass fed beef, lamb, chicken and pork at the pick up location. The few negative call outs - prices are often higher than grocery stores and other farm stands at the farmers market, pickup is on a weekday so you have to be able to pick up midweek by a certain time (not easy for those with long hours/commutes), and weights are approximate so sometimes you'll get less than the requested amount (sometimes you'll get more though). read more

I bought things from them from Ferry's building farmers markets. We bought flowers and parsnip. We asked the person a couple of question and suggestions on how to cook it and some questions. He was trying not to engage and was rude the entire time. We try to go and support local farms but this type of behavior was really not nice. Not planning to get other things from them. read more

Let's get a few things out of the way: 1) If you see this stand at your farmer's market, stop by to pick up some delicious produce and eggs. They sometimes have beans and fun items like pancake mix too. 2) If you're considering joining the CSA, it's amazing. The items included in the weekly box are always beautiful (this is no exaggeration). Also Teresa will email you earlier in the week so you know what to expect, in case you're trying to plan meals. She also sends out a bulk price list for items which is great if you're hosting a party or want a lot of something (note: a flat of strawberries is a lot of strawberries but you will be able to eat them all or give them away to friends). 3) If you're in the neighborhood the farm is a cool place to visit, though they're not really set up to do tours (they have self-guided maps). They have chickens, cows, and pigs. I first found out about Fifth Crow Farm two years ago when I started going to the San Mateo Farmer's Market. It quickly became one of my favorite stands - really great food and super-friendly people. Earlier this year I picked up a flyer for their CSA. From a totally utilitarian perspective it didn't really make sense to join - the most convenient pick-up location was the Saturday San Mateo market, so why commit to a weekly box full of things not of my choosing? I had recently made my way through a series of food-related books and documentaries (mostly about local and sustainable food), so the idea of getting to know (and showing support for) the farmers feeding my family was somewhat appealing. I was also stuck in a bit of a spinach-arugula-broccoli-cabbage rut, and it was pretty clear that the first year of my little backyard gardening experiment wasn't going to be feeding me this summer, so I signed up for a box and a 1/2 dozen eggs. About a month-and-a-half in, I've been super happy with it. This past Sunday Fifth Crow Farms hosted an open house, so I took Camille along. It was my first visit to the farm. Really enjoyed seeing Teresa and Mike (and the other farmers) in their element, and it was clear that they spent a lot of time preparing for their guests. After savoring the two weekly baskets of perfect strawberries, consuming tons of eggs (got 18 this week), and experimenting with some new vegetables, I found it really satisfying to see the strawberry patch, chicken coops, and rows of produce soaking up the bright California sunshine. read more

Hidden away on an unmarked dirt road directly across from the Double Dog Ranch in Pescadero is this very unique farm which cultivates a wide array of certified organic products. The farm is run by three farmers, Mike, Teresa and John. This was our second stop on a recent farm tour organized through a branch of the Pacific Coast Farmers Market Association (PCFMA). This was the same tour that took us to the Iacopi Farm in Half Moon Bay and the Westland Nursery in Pescadero. We met John at the Double Dog Ranch. He hopped on our colorful ice cream bus and led us into the farm completely hidden from public roads. Our bus driver was quite the daredevil on this day maneuvering around some very tight corners both in getting into the farm and going around tightly spaced crop fields inside the farm. The fifth crow farm would be the site of our group lunch cooked by the two traveling PCFMA chefs Greg and Sim so while the cooks were preparing lunch John gave us a grand tour of the farm. The three farmers live in portable yurts perched on top of sturdy wooden platforms with power provided from several generators housed nearby. There are three very friendly cats that live on the farm and all three seemed to shadow John's every footstep. What I originally thought were overgrown weeds were actually Sonora wheat. The farm is experimenting in grains with small patches of oats, quinoa, sorghum and teff. There are several lettuce varieties as well as a salad mix planted in one section. The lettuce seedlings and the teff start out in little miniature soil beds before being transferred into the soil. In addition to the lettuce other vegetable crops included corn, assorted squash, potatoes, leeks, peppers, garlic and beans. Among the fruit crops were bright red strawberries, several tomato varieties and Charentais melons. One of the more intriguing aspects of the farm is their all natural mobile hen farm which produces farm fresh eggs to be sold at the farmers markets. There are over two hundred hens on the farm and all of them run freely on acres of grassy pastures eating organic grasses, insects and organic feed. John refers to the flock as "gypsy hens". The hens are moved to different areas of the farm on a week to week basis and serve not only as organic egg producers but as a vital part of the farm maintenance in helping to both eliminate weeds and to fertilize the soil. All of the eggs are hand picked and each are hand washed before being sold for public consumption. While working out of another farm Teresa once created a video on mobile hen ranching. We started with a tart strawberry lemonade, and we feasted on caramelized onion tarts with capers, summer mixed salad with strawberries, goat cheese, candied almonds and a poppy-seed vinaigrette, grilled squash with olive oil and garlic and a fabulous potato and leek soup. Fifth Crow is my favorite farm to date. I came here on a farm bike tour with the Pacific Coast Farmer's Market Association. We get to sample some strawberries and see happy chickens run and fly over to fresh pastures. We saw many species of free-range chickens from which Fifth Crow's certified organic eggs come from. $8/dozen of eggs sounds pricey, but they feed their chickens expensive organic feed and rotate the chickens to fresh pastures every week. I like how their egg cartons say when the eggs are laid. Each carton has a mix of eggs from different species, so the eggs come in various sizes with several shades of brown and white. There is also a lone "green" egg. Their eggs taste different and the egg yolks have a more orange hue. You can get their eggs and produce at the San Mateo Farmers Market and Inner Sunset Farmers Market. read more

I joined Fifth Crow Farm's CSA this summer, and was so happy with the consistently wonderful quality and variety of their fruits and vegetables. Weekly on-line customizing of my order was easy, and the pick-up location was close by, really convenient. Hours were 1:30pm to 8:00pm. The CSA will start up again next spring, so until then I'm going to their stand at the College of San Mateo Farmers' Market. read more

I've been a loyal customer of Fifth Crow for about 6 years now, frequenting their stand at various farmer's markets around San Francisco (Inner Sunset, Inner Richmond, Castro). Fifth Crow has the most delicious lettuce I've ever eaten, hands down, and their produce and cut flowers are always fresh and beautiful. They also have really good eggs, with golden orange yolks and a flavor you will never find from a supermarket egg. The love and dedication that Teresa, Mike, John, and the team put into the farm is obvious from the quality of their products. We've been members of the Fifth Crow Farm CSA (community supported agriculture) for several years. That allows us to skip the long lines and their very popular farmer's market stall. In addition to knowing your produce is grown with integrity and without any harmful chemicals, the team is amazing! We love that we are supporting local agriculture and that each week is like an episode of Top Chef where you creatively use the contents of the box. We've learned to cook with and love vegetables we had not been exposed to before. [I'll never forget the first time I pulled the Kohlrabi out of the box!] We particularly love the different varieties of standards. Not only is their produce and eggs the best you will EVER find... they also happen to be very nice and honest people. I left my prescription sunglasses at their stand in the Castro last week. Last wk Saturday, I asked my husband to pick up a bag of the "organic, pre-washed, ready to eat SPRING MIX" . The bag was old and not fresh. Many pieces of the lettuce mix was slimy, the ends were brown and I had to go through each piece of lettuce to retrieve what might be edible. I cut off the brown stems, removed and tossed the slimy lettuce pieces that were stuck to other lettuce, and tossed brown, bruised lettuce. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PREWASHED LETTUCE! IT IS NOT FRESH! IT IS HARMFUL TO YOUR HEALTH AS THE LETTUCE IS OLD, SLIMY AND SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN SOLD AT THE SF FERRY BUILDING SATURDAY MARKET AS "FRESH". I only purchased this because I had a medical procedure where I am not able to prepare lettuce heads. I did purchase this a couple weeks ago, and it wasn't this bad. So I thought it would be okay to purchase again. BUT NEVER EVER AGAIN! THE LETTUCE WAS VERY WET!. They don't dry the lettuce satisfactorily and sell old bags of prewashed lettuce. IT IS VERY COMMERCIAL AND UNETHICAL FOR THEM TO SELL OLD, WET, SLIMY LETTUCE AS "FRESH". SHAME ON THEM! read more

The secret - if there ever really were one - is out that Fifth Crow Farm operates one of the ultimate farm stands at the San Mateo Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings. Teresa handles the long lines with saint-like patience, dispensing an impressive array of organic produce, eggs, flour, and whatever she and her fellow farmers pull from their Pescadero property. It is rare to attract such a cult-like following so fast, especially when there are so many great stands to choose from, but the folks at Fifth Crow have a special kind of magic when it comes to things organic and locally-grown. I have been a member of several different CSAs over the years, but Fifth Crow is the most abundant of them all. Everything is so fresh and beautiful and a great variety of veggies with some fruit from their amazing orchard or berries from the fields. I love getting the dried beans, blue corn meal mix, and pancake mix. I am counting the days until this season begins (only six more days).:^) If you are looking for a CSA, Fifth Crow is it. One has to understand and appreciate going into a CSA that half of what you are getting is the personal attention the farmers put into growing the food you're getting. Think of it like this; of all the food you can buy in a New Leaf, how many of the producers and makers of the products will personally shake your hand? How many will pick the best of what they've grown and put it in a box for you? How many personally drive it to meet you? If you can't think of any, then think outside the box store and meet Mike, Teresa and John of Fifth Crow farm. Now, if you think you can put a price and that kind of love and attention, then it's bound to add up to a lot more then you'll pay for their CSA. I can assure you, the price does not reflect fairly the personal touch you get. There CSA (with all the great options) is worth the price and then some. read more

This farm has the most fresh and beautiful produce at the CSM farmers' market. They have a line of people waiting by 9am. They treat their CSA members very well. Our boxes come with average of 7-9 items per week and they definitely give us the best of the harvest that week. They also joined with a meat and poultry CSA which is convenient for us who take sustainable foods seriously and do not want to go all over town finding pastured beef, pork and chicken. They give a personal touch by emailing us the content of each week's box and updates about their farm. And on occasion we are treated to pictures of the farm animals and hard working staff and recipes for the wonderful produce. Their farm day is a real treat. They put on a great potluck and tour of their farm. I've been a member for 2 years now and have gotten 2 friends to start a CSA and we are very happy with our boxes. Teresa K is the nicest person you will ever want to do business with. P.S. I'm not sure what happened with Jay M, but you either pay 1 lump sum or in 2 payments; half before the season starts and balance in July. You also do not pay for vacation days when you do not take a box if you give them advance notice. You always get what they promise or will let you know why something is missing and fix it on the next box. You get the best & freshest organic produce for what you pay. I don't shop at New Leaf, but I get more from FCF than what I would pay at Whole Foods for the same amount of produce. read more
