Quaint place for strawberry and olallieberry picking in the Half Moon Bay area. The fields are large and well-maintained, even quite late into the picking season. When we went on a Saturday afternoon, there were only 2 other parties picking in the fields with us! There is a large parking lot and small grocery market at the front of the fields with all that you could ask for. This little Roadside convenient shop Is a mystery wrapped in a riddle. Who are they? Why not sign out front? Is this a front for a big peanut? What does R&R even stand for? "Rest and relaxation"? "Root beer and rum"? Maybe we will never know. Let's get the easy stuff out of the way:: Ambience: you wouldn't even know the places there if you don't have a map leading you there or a referral from a local unfortunately. Not sure why they don't have a sign out. Service is a little irrelevant since there is simply a person behind the counter checking you out. Now onto the product: there really is only one offering that is hard to pass these guys by for if you're in Pascadero area: R&R offer a cup of peanut for $4 that is magically delicious and snackable. did President Jimmy Carter have peanuts this delicious from his peanut farm? I submit that he did not? Pro tip: Do not have them around if you feel an oncoming snack attack. You'll possibly consume the entire cup o' vegan legumes which brings me to an interesting factoid: did you know that a peanut is neither a pea nor a nut? It is indeed a legume. The peanut is more like one of those hideous lentils then delicious pea or a delicious nut. Why!? This seems so unnecessary. I wouldn't be surprised to find That President Jimmy Carter President Obama somehow Secretly teamed up to rename and re-categorize what is clearly a nut into a legume. This is much the way the President Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Mara Lago or whatever it was. A little personal story about R&R: it was the case that when I moved away from the central coast I found myself trying to replicate these tastey legumes By cooking peanuts in the oven at my new home which is 6300 feet above sea level. Many calculations must be made to adjust For cooking at that altitude versus at sea I think I have come close To replicating them but still no dice. I cannot get quite the coverage of salty goodness to adhere to the Redskins the way they have. We've been coming here last two summers for strawberry u-pick since our usual go-to blue house farm has been inconsistently operating every time we make a trip out to Pescadero. Pros: Huge berries that are plump, extremely sweet and abundant- we got there midday and there was still plenty to go around. Don't think it's an organic farm if this matters a lot to you but the fruit was healthy and enough was growing that you'll have a good chance of u-pick being available. Exposed so it's not too muddy, but might be hot later in the season Mostly consistently open compared to other farms in the area Cons: People working there are not the friendliest and every time we call are confused or crabby. Make sure they tare your container, the people working there kept including the weight of the box / baskets in the price and had to be taught how to exclude this by their manager after we inquired. read more

One of the only places I go for berry picking! There are a lot of things I like about R&R farms, but the top thing is definitely that there are no crowds. No matter when I come, there is maybe three other families at most. But there are many rows of berries that there is plenty to go around. R&R is one of the few places that has U pick olallieberries, which are my favorite! They're similar to blackberries, but tend to be a little more tart but super flavorful in my opinion. They're great for any baked goods you could think of. If you do come to get some berries, I recommend wearing longer pants or long socks because the bushes are overgrown and the vines definitely can scratch up your legs. I also recommend not picking too many per basket, otherwise the ones on the bottom get squished. Stop by if you're in need of berries or in the area! read more

You check out a basket at the counter, then off you go into the fields to pick berries. There were raspberries, olallieberries, blackberries, and strawberries. Pricing went from $4/lb (strawberries) to $8/lb (mixed berries). As we were heading out to pick, we saw another party with the biggest and reddest strawberries; their advice to us was to pick towards the back (vs the initial rows you see) and they were right! I visited in early September with the intention of doing some berry picking. They also have a store where they sell some produce from the farm and some general goods, including many Mexican items, dried chiles, baked goods and of course, berries! I didn't see any fresh herbs on this visit but I purchased some dried herbs and hibiscus for making jamaica agua fresca. They have organic blackberries, raspberries, olalieberries and strawberries in the field available to pick. It's $4 per lb for strawberries. $6 for raspberries, $7 for blackberries and olallieberries and $8 for mixed berries, They have large and small baskets but the small baskets hold about 2 lbs of berries. When you first arrive you ask them for either a small or large basket. After you are done picking bring the basket back to the store to have it weighed and then pay. There is a good sized amout of parking in front of the building that houses the general store. On this visit I just picked strawberries since it was so late in the season and they were ripe, super juicy and sweet. I thought the blackberries were a bit tart so skipped those and I was a couple of weeks late for the olallieberries. Pay in cash to save on the credit card fees. read more

I had a strange experience there. The cashier weighed my strawberries, but did not weigh my olallieberries, then gave me a total. I picked only about 8 olallieberries so figured there must be a minimum fee since my total cost was so expensive. Nope, no minimum. I put my 8 berries on the scale and asked her to correct it. So watch what goes on at the register. (There was no line to pay at that time, so there was no rush or distractions.) The strawberries were delicious but very few (and we arrived when it opened for the day). The rows were not kept well (lots of weeds), so there would be accessibility issues for the unsteady. We visited on August 8, picked olallieberries, raspberries and strawberries, still a lot of each on the bushes and wonderfully ripe. Fingers crossed we might still be able to have some success in September, we shall see... Farm is very easy to find, prices are as expected for the area, large breezy store with cold drinks, etc as well. Have you heard of the Olallieberries? Neither have we! But apparently it's the name of the big blackberries that are the specialty of Half Moon Bay/Pescadero. We learned from the owner of the cabin we're staying at that you can get Olallieberry pie from Duarte's Cavern, or get the berries themselves from R&R Fresh Herbs, so here we are! Turns out that you can pick the berries yourself here, and they also have these small Olallieberry pies to go! The berries are really easy to pick, you don't need to squad down like picking the strawberries, just pick them at eye level, a little prickly and there's a lot of them this time of year. Cute place! The family loved it and we came back home with a full basket of olalliberries and only paid $12.50 which for us was a steal. They have onsite bathrooms which was great and the best part is that its not a porta potty but an actual clean spacious bathroom.The cashier let us know that her Strawberries didn't sprout this year so that was a bummer because we wanted to pick both fruits but we ended up going to a nearby farm for Strawberries. I think the rustic sign that led me here said R & R Farms/ "fresh berries". It is a barn-like produce store with several specialties grown on site or real local. Main point of interest for me were the strawberries which were confirmed grown on site. They were smaller berries but nicely red and ripe. And very, very true strawberry flavor, exactly what I look for, which I find impossible in today's grocery landscape. At $2.50 per basket, I found this to be an incredible score. The space is incredibly sparse as there are very little shelf space for such a large space, and a modest inventory to match. The majority of the other offerings were geared towards Hispanic meals, to cater to the agricultural community I'm sure. So plantains, papayas, jicama and chiles of all types were available, but I didn't feel a need to explore these items since I can get them in my home town. 5th star is for the super cute bundled up Mexican lady who amusingly endured my 2 year level Spanish speaking skills. She also tallied up my bill with pen and paper and basic math. So damn adorable! read more

We went during the last week of May. They only had strawberries for the U-Pick farm at this time. Most of the fruits were big and red! It was sprinkling the day we went so our shoes were covered in mud. They do have a hose on the side to help you clean off. Strawberries are $4/lb for the U-Pick farm. R & R Fresh Herbs, aka R & R Farms, is a roadside U-pick berry farm, farmer's market and camp firewood stand just 200 yards from Pescadero's main drag, Stage Road. José and his small staff are a delightful addition to the Pescadero community. He recently expanded his commercial herb and berry farm to include U-pick raspberries, olallieberries and blackberries. U-pick prices are very reasonable, as are the prices of their market goods. Berry season can be more elusive than Obamacare repeal, so best to shoot for June if you want a "fruitful" picking experience! We went in mid July and were lucky to catch a few raspberries and olallieberries, and loads of blackberries. R & R's variety of aren't the watery, blandly flavored ones I've had elsewhere - they're bursting with sweet-tart piquant flavors. The simple shed-like structure in front houses their farm stand, a modest but excellent selection of local produce, some imported fruits and hand made goods. And firewood! Fully seasoned hardwood bundles for your Butano State Park campfire. While you're here, check out the laid-back, quaintly sleepy town of Pescadero, and don't leave without a steaming warm loaf of Arcangeli's renown garlic-artichoke French bread, or the delicious goat cheeses at Harley's Goat Farm. I went with friends on my 60th birthday. The Olallieberry vines are close enough to parking for those using a cane. The staff were friendly and happy to talk about their farm. The store was quaint, and had a good price on Mexican spices, as well as roasted peanuts, dry beans, fresh produce and single-serving berry pies. The peanuts were fine. The only disappointment was that ripe Olallieberries were few and far between. I had to cover a lot of ground to get a full basket. There were very many unripe berries on the vines, so picking should be better when they ripen. Overall, it was a fun outing in the cool Pescadero weather. read more
