Where to begin? If I could rate negative stars I would. I've always been on the fence with them. They claim to be Lagotto specialists but I found them average, and they've always been a bit condescending (especially Erin) but I always let that pass. I made a recent appointment with two weeks notice and things went off the rails. First we received a message shortly before our appointment that we needed to reschedule since they were going to be closed for several days. Odd that they took my original appointment without knowing that but I was fine to reschedule. Their next availability was the following Saturday so we changed our plans around the change in schedule. No problem. Then things fell apart. We live 35 miles away from Coats and Tails in Washington State. And there's only one briidge on I-5 for us to get into Portland. Unfortunately on that Saturday the state of Washington decided to do major repairs on the Interstate which caused a significant stoppage, which caused all of the side roads to be severly backed up. End result is that our typical 40 minute commute took us a full hour and a half. So instead of being early, as we intended, we were 20 minutes late to arrive. First off, being late to arrive is our fault, not theirs. I did call them 30 minutes before our scheduled appointment to give them notice of our delay, but their voice message said that even though they are open they don't answer the phone or check their messgaes on Saturday. That made the delay even more stressful. I arrived 20 minutes late hoping that they could still help me, considering that I readily agreed to move their mis-scheduled appointment to a day that ended up being challenging beyond my control. The staff has helpful and understanding but they needed to ask Erin, who promptly said "no, we can't take her since you're late. We're trying to beat the heat" Which I took to say that they could have helped me but she didn't want to. She offered to reschedule, yet again. But no sympathy for what I had to go through for them. Again, I WAS LATE which was my fault. But Erin's arrogance and condescending attitute finally got to me and I'm done with this place. They do reasonably good cuts. Not enough to account for their premium pricing but it is what it is. But life's too short to put up with that arrogance and poor customer attitude. There are better options in Portland. Hope that you consider that before you go back to Coats and Tails read more

My experience was not good or even average for the money paid. I specifically asked the groomer to do an alpine paw trim with dew claw clip only as they were beginning to circle. I specifically asked her, almost emphatically, to not touch his nails because my dog is extremely active in town and the back country. He climbs volcanoes, mountains, skijours, and pulls polks. He needs his claws and wears them down naturally. I don't clip them for this purpose, so they are there when he needs them which is quite often in the terrain we cover. Now they are clipped down and he won't let me touch them for some reason. I left a hefty tip for the groomer on top of the service charge. If I'd have known she was going to clip them anyway I'd have went somewhere else. You pay more money here for the quality. That will be the last time. read more

Oof we have used so many different groomers over my pups 9.5 years. Chewie (pup) is an F3 medium labradoodle, so his hair is on the corse side, with quite a bit of curl. His face however is a bit on the wavy texture side. Only a few grooms have been a disaster, in our previous endeavors to find "The" groomer, a few who even nicked him. Other groomers were good, or acceptable. Then we tried Coats and Tails 2-3 years ago. I LOVE the shop, and Chewie does too. Chewie's cut is gorgeous and grows out beautifully. They take care not to get water in his ears, which usually leads to an infection with him. We also have the groomer take care of trimming his nails and teeth brushing. Through all the years every shop has loved Chewie. He's sweet as can be, and easy. But for us, our one and only shop is Coats and Tails. read more

I absolutely love this place for my 3 yr old black pug Mazzy! They do a excellent and efficient job and really show extra love to the pups! My dog is never traumatized and today ( I think her 4th visit) they even added on a flower bow to her I think Sarah is the name of who Mazzy sees. After having a few bad grooming experiences and then quarantine our pup was in desperate need of a summer cut. Since he is so fluffy we've found most places just shave him no matter what we ask for! We decided to try coats and tails after reading reviews! It was about a two week wait to get him in but it was so worth it! He came out looking better than the pictures we emailed and most of all he was happy! We talked to Aimee about what we wanted in a haircut and she delivered! They have great social distancing - everyone is wearing masks and you just hand your pup to them right outside the store using their own leashes! Great experience and well worth the cost. I took my 7 month old mini Aussiedoodle puppy for her first groom and was returned a shaved terrier. The groomer noted she had some matting, which I had felt around her hind legs and neck and understandably I knew this would need to be shaved. The groomer proceeded to shave her ENTIRE BODY including her face, ears, chin, legs, which were NOT matted. This was an entirely unnecessary and traumatic experience and felt somewhat like a condescending punishment from the groomer for bringing in a puppy with matting. read more

The first few times I took my dog here, I loved it, but the last 3 times, I've been extremely disappointed. I have a mini Aussie, so he has a double coat. They ruined his double coat. Every time, I've asked them to do it as short as they can without cutting into his undercoat. Well, they cut into it. His coat now grows in patchy, and when I told them this at his last appointment, I was met with "ya well it's a bit of a gamble with double coats". Okay, no, but fine. BUT, here's the nail in the coffin, they left cotton in his ears!! So far down that I had to use tweezers to pull it out. I understand that things happen and some things get overlooked, but if I'm paying $120 for a 20lb dog, I expect it to be a bit better. No more. They lost a client with me and my boy. read more

Coats & Tails is awesome. My one dog, Maggie, is a bullet-proof street dog, rescue but her big sister Tashi, is a sensitive flower. She requires special shampoo so she doesn't itch to death. I forgot to take Natalie our shampoo. (D'oh!) They bathed Tashi with their gentlest shampoo but in the evening Tashi started scratching. Next morning I called C&T to ask if they might rebathe her w our special stuff. They made a slice of time to fit her in and had me bring her right down. It only took a half hour to fix her up. I have a Pomsky who is incredibly apprehensive towards being groomed and I was super nervous about bringing her somewhere new. Reba did a wonderful job! Reba was patient with her and listened to me and my nervous dog mom concerns before grooming. My biggest fear is her being shaved & Reba was well educated on Winifred's double coat and did an amazing job trimming her without taking too much off. 10/10, will definitely be returning! I took my dog (Pomeranian) to get a hair cut, and I absolutely hate it. Pomeranians can't have their hair too short because it can cause alopecia, which is the conversation that me and the girl who I spoke to the previous day had and that I didn't want it to be too short to prevent that from happening. She told me to show a picture of what I wanted my dog's haircut to be when I dropped her off, which I did. The photo of my dog, from a previous groomer, was slightly cut and shaped but not too low to cause alopecia. When I went to pick up my dog, it was the shortest hair cut she's ever had, it looked like they took clippers to cut her fur. My dog is 11 years old, so she's been to many groomers. It was shaved so low, she almost makes her look like a cat! I gave two stars cause I'm sure how my dog's fur is going to react but if my dog gets alopecia, I am going to be so pissed! read more

Very quick and thorough. My dog came out looking and feeling and smelling like a million bucks. The phone service was professional and patient, and they ladies in the shop greeted me kindly. I was able to schedule another appointment for a few months out with the same groomer for consistency. I like that! My only concern was the metal music they were playing quietly in the background when I arrived. I sound like a mom of a child but I hope they didn't crank it and scare the dogs with the energy when I left. My dog is already afraid of everything! She needs Bouble or the likes on the radio. Haha! So disappointed. We had been happy taking our pup here for her monthly groom. Not 100% but the best we had found since moving to Portland. Our baby had been groomed here about 5 times. The place is clean and small, not too many dogs at once and no crating. So far so good. Our pup is an aussidoodle so a bit high maintenance but nothing crazy. We gave explicit instructions not to touch her eye lashes both verbally and in writing but when we picked her up last time, she literally has no eye lashes. The long lashes are kind of an aussidoodle trademark. Hers were about 2 inches long and beautiful. Now they are no more. Ever since they inherited clients from Noah's arf, seems like the quality has suffered. We called to ask what happened and it has been two weeks now and no one has returned our call nor apologized. And this is a $100 grooming. That's how you lose clients. We will never return. read more

Soooo, Iv NEVER made a yelp review in my life until today. I just had to with the service that we had with coats & tails. Me and my gf moved from Chicago in January and we have a Hungarian puli. If you don't know much about that breed they are essentially big white dreaded mops. We had our special groomer in Chicago to take him to for years and once we moved we had no idea who to go to or trust doing his delicate coat. Unfortunately in February when he was due for a bath we took him to a petco only to find out the groomers had no idea what to do and took no initiative to listen what I told them to do & instead of just giving him back to us they almost ruined his cords. We were stumped to decide where to go for his next bath... UNTIL I spoke to Erin the owner who was up front and honest saying how she's never done a puli before but she promised she would watch videos & do all the research she could before touching our dog... and that shown when we took him in & received him after his bath. He looked GREAT! It just makes me happy that there is people out there willing to put in the work to accomplish what needs to be accomplished and not half ass anything for the sake of the dog. I'm enamored with Coats & Tails. Starting with the 1st phone call. I know I lucked into a same day appointment but I had just gotten back from a day at the beach with my dogs....they had found something which can only be described as, sand covered skin with a feather. Both decided to roll in this ocean seasoned jerky muck. So they both desperately needed a fluff and fold. My doxie (Spike/Steve ) loathes getting his nails trimmed but it was time so I booked a nail trim too. We both usually need a shot of whiskey before appointments.....it's legit that stressful for us. So we show up and he immediately starts throwing himself against the glass window like somehow if he does it one more time, the window will disappear and he will be transported to 1000 acres dog park with a fully cooked steak waiting for him. Immediately we are greeted by smiling faces and kind voices. They gave me a great run down and a good eta of when they will be done. Next thing I know Spike is being swooped up into loving arms and Scully (PomChi ) is escorted into the back...sandy eyeboogers in tow. Less than an hour later, I miss the phone call (of course) but they text me that they are ready for me to come pick them up. Not only were they very prompt, kind and informative but the rates were extremely reasonable. I will absolutely be coming here regularly....no whiskey needed! Thank you team C&T! We love ya. Ps.....Scully here. Clearly my mom plays favorites. It's very difficult being this perfect. She needs to be more grateful for me. Two years ago I brought my small dog in for grooming because my regular groomer (Heather's Finest Dog and Cat Grooming) was booked. When I brought him home, he was coughing. They had used a loop around his neck. He coughed and gagged for three days. Those loops can cause or worsen collapsed trachea! On top of that, his left ear was drooping. I looked, but didn't see anything. About three months later while he was having a vet checkup, i asked her about his ear. The vet pulled out a cotton ball. She had to use an instrument, it was in so deep. I reported it to them and they said too much time had passed so there was no proof it was them. Well, I had not had him groomed since then, and his ear was fine before that. And the last thing -- it was so noisy with all the blow dryers going that it must have been very uncomfortable for sensitive dog ears. So, it took about 6 months for my dog to stop shaking when we went anywhere near the salon (there is a PetCo next door and we often patronize that. There is a joint parking lot and when we pulled into the lot he shook terribly.) Finally enough time has passed and we can be in the area without him being traumatized. And by the way, after two years, my dog's ear still droops. The vet says the cartilage may have been damaged. read more

I took my pup here for an anal gland expression. They tried to express his glands, but my pup has anxiety and they weren't able to fully do it. Then recommend we go to a vet for an internal expression. Fair enough, I understand that my dog doesn't always do well with strangers. But since they weren't able to provide the service, I'm disappointed that they charged us for the service. I would think since they knew they were unsuccessful due to my dog's anxiety, that they wouldn't charge us. Now my pup still smells fishy and we need to find another place and pay a second time. read more

Dishonest, unprofessional, and will charge you fees without your knowledge. When I attempted to rectify the fees, instead of reversing them, they offered to take only half my money for a service that was not performed. There was no prior communication about them taking any fees when they ask for your card information. Not verbal, nor in writing. If this happens to anyone else, dispute it with your bank. There are many great dog grooming businesses in the area with integrity. This all could have been resolved had the business done the right thing. read more

I had a 4:15pm appointment with Krista here today. They called me at 8am to ask if I would change to 2 pm. I rearranged my day to accommodate. I was there on time and dropped my dog off for a 2 hour appointment. At 4:15pm I get a call saying the appointment is taking longer. Krista told me it would be an additional 20 minutes. Once again I rearranged my schedule to accommodate. At 5:15pm I stopped in to check on status since I hadn't heard a word. Krista was doing another dog and my dog was in a cage. I could hear her crying and there was no doubt that she had been in there for over an hour. I asked Krista what was going on. She said my dog wasn't finished yet and they needed another 20 minutes. They called me at 5:50 to say my dog was finally done. When I arrived the poor thing was shaved to the wood. Everything today was done to make Krista's life easier. I changed my appointment and readjusted my schedule. My dog was stuck in a cage for over an hour. I waited until nearly 6pm to pick my dog up from a 2pm appointment. And my poor poodle came out looking like a greyhound. All this and $160 for the abuse. I have three dogs that have been getting groomed here. I wasn't terribly happy last time I was in, but after this experience I will never go back there again. read more

My daughter had her Pom groomed here. Well mannered, never bites. He had open wounds from razor marks into his skin. She had to take him to the vet and was given salves and antibiotics. They did reimburse for clip and vet bill but there appeared to be defensiveness and lack or empathy. read more

Our regular vet charges more for a basic trim w/o filing compared to what C&T charges for trim w/ filling included. Just moved here and I left them a voicemail at 8a. They called me back promptly when they opened, helped me made a same day appointment, and Natalie cut our pups hair perfectly! She asked all the right questions, became friends with our pup instantly, and he was done exactly within the hour. Paid $65/hr (originally quoted for 1hr 15mins), but he was done promptly an hour after drop off, looking fresh to death! Full coat trim, nails and silky smooth coat. So appreciative for our little old man's summer cut. read more

I recently moved to Portland from Naples Florida with my German Schnauzer. I was concerned as to the groomer that I would find near my new home. As luck would have it Coats And Tails is less than two blocks from where I live. Initially my schnauzer was a little apprehensive with changing groomer and made it quite rough on the groomer. We decided that I would take him in more often for brushing and bathing so that he would get comfortable with the new groomer. These extra visits have worked out well. Often as I walk my pooch people say what a beautifully groomed dog you have and of course that makes me feel good. Very disappointing experience. My pup came to me shivering and trembling. There was an inch-long nick in the collar area. The hair trim was shoddy, uneven (they shaved her down), and nails were partially clipped. And no bath during the hour long appointment: This grooming service has a trainer on their staff to provide a low-stress grooming service but this experience seemed to be anything but low stress for my puppy. read more
