Scheduled a full grooming appointment weeks in advance and was told to drop off our pup between 7AM-10AM. Dropped him off at 8AM and was told to expect him to be done between 12PM-2PM for a simple cut and wash. Had planned to go out of town at 2PM so went to go pick him up at 1:30 and they had only given him a bath...in 5 hours time all they did was bathe him. Unless you want your dog to be locked in a cage for 4 hours before they get around to him, go somewhere else. Will never be back. read more

I have a handful of a little dog (he's big trouble in a little body) and even though he's two, I still feel like a novice when it comes to groomers. We've gone to Showdogs and had ok/good experiences there, except they weren't plucking all his ear hair out (gross, I know) and he was getting regular ear infections. We changed his food and decided to try a new groomer, and Zimmer's reviews looked promising. I made an appointment (and had a wait a little longer than I do for an appointment at Showdogs, but I only had to wait a couple of days) and I was thrilled from that moment on! I explained he was a giant pain in a butt, and these women looked ready to take him on. I explained his ear situation, and they promised they would do their best. I dropped him off and was met by wonderful women and adorable dogs, and I felt curious and excited to see how it would all go down. When they called us to pick him up (which was exactly in the window they had said they would) they told me he did well, but that he was really touchy with his ear and asked if when we picked him up if we could try and help them try again. I arrived and his cut looked great, and his ears were trimmed (but not plucked), so we all got down to business. We held him (reminding him constantly how awesome he is) and the groomer pulled masses of hair out (gross, I know, sorry) and did an amazing job. Miles (the dog) seemed totally fine with it all in the end. He left groomed to perfection and unfazed by the whole experience. I love that I could be honest with them, and that I received honesty and very competent care in return. In the past, when we've told people he's difficult and that we need his ears done we've been told everything is fine (until we're at the vet, anesthetizing him to remove massive hairballs in his ears). I would rather spend an extra 2 minutes when I pick him up helping get the job really done, and done well then be misled. These women were awesome, did a great job and even left Miles with a cute little bandanna as a parting gift. Thanks! read more

These are great ladies; personable, friendly and truly enjoy working with animals. I've been taking my cocker spaniel to Kelly for years now; he loves going and they always take good care of him. As he's aged they are very gentle with him and concerned for his well being. Before Zimmer's when I tried other places, he would frequently come home with fleas! This has never happened here. I have been bringing my dogs here for what I fondly call their "spa day" for 15 years. I love the staff here. They are wonderful with the dogs...even when my Rat Terrier becomes an insane beast over getting his nails done and has to be muzzled they show extreme patience with him. They pamper my pooches without seriously damaging my wallet. They know my dogs names and mine as well. My dogs always come away happy, clean, and with a dog biscuit. read more

The little babes came out looking fresh and very eager to see me as per usual. But... I feel this experience was mediocre. I won't be back. This was our first visit to Zimmers, I usually go to Muttley Crew, but as they were booked a month out, I called Zimmers for an emergency cut for this heat wave! They fit me in a week after my call, and I opted for a 7AM appointment. The earlier the better, I want my babes to be in and out nice and early. They are within walking distance from me, and have an adorable pup mural outside the front entrance. So, the outside aesthetics are great. A cute little space in the heart of our beloved St.Johns! I arrived at 7 AM, and greeted by two friendly women who informed me that it would be a projected 2-4pm pick up time. What?! That is the longest wait time ever for my babes to be cooped in a cage in an already stressful situation. This is where I take off one star, but because it was imperative that they get groomed today, I didn't complain. At most, a typical trip to Muttleys takes at most 3 hours for both. :/. The room was quite hot and smelled of heavily synthetic candles and chemicals. You know, if it was potent for my nose, then how nauseating would it be to our canine friends to have to smell for a projected 7-9 hours? Woo! I mean when I'm stressed out personally, strong smells make me feel worse. Their haircuts are cute but not as I asked, and they skipped out on clipping their dew claws even after I informed them that they both need all their nails clipped. I wanted a consistent short cut, including their tail hair for summer. They left the tail hair. I would have said something, but you know I couldn't bare to make them stay in that dingy little room for another minute. Oh well. It just isn't worth convenience. Go to a place in which they listen to your requests whole-heartedly, a place that is efficient, and a place that isn't masking uncleanliness with the smell of chemicals. We all love dogs obviously, so walking into a place that smells faintly like wet dog would be better than some knock off brand chemical air freshener. Go to Muttley crew! i have been bringing the wee pup here for a several months now, and i am definitely pleased with the service and the cuts she's been getting. they run things a little differently than other grooming salons that i've been to, but it seems to work for them, and is 100% ok by me. it is very easy for me to get appointments (they are never booked out for more than a week -- yay!). plus their pricing is very competitive and their schedule is reliable AF. the ladies are very sweet and my dog seems very calm and happy for the rest of the day after she's been here (a MAJOR plus for me as she is a bit of a nervous nellie). they always follow my instructions for the cut, and while it's not always perfect (there are often a few bits and bobs of hair missed here and there) they do a mighty fine job for the price. they only take cash and checks, which is old school but totally understandable for a small business. additionally, they have always been flexible with me if i've needed an earlier or later-than-usual pick up time. i have found that letting them know my needs when i schedule makes for a very easy early or late pick up situation. other reviewers have mentioned the strong chemical smell, but it smells about like any other grooming salon or kennel i've taken my dog to. the interior is a bit cluttery and quirky, but doesn't seem dirty. i think it's important to note that the owners really seem to take pride in their business and their work, and my pup and i really appreciate that. we've been very happy with zimmer's! thank you for making grooming easy and affordable! read more

Went in just for a quick dremmel. I have a 90 lb rottweiler mix, Bella. The staff was friendly. I walked in without an appointment and they took me in which was nice. However, the lady there seemed very inexperienced with this, either that or she was in a big hurry and didn't care. She barely filed down her nails at all. Paid 7 dollars and we walked out of there with Bella's nails still pretty long. Disappointed. Will not be returning. read more

I took my dog there like three times and every time he was cut and he looked very nervous and scared. I would see the groomers leaving the dogs on the table by themselves and that in petsmart is not allowed because the dog can fall and choke itself. Do not take your dog to these people unless you want a big vet bill. I inherited a standard poodle when my parents died this year. We have taken him to the groomer is entire life and mom even clipped him herself. I live too far away from his old groomer so I took him to Zimmers because the reviews were good and they have been in St. John's for so long. The first time they convinced us he was matted (I didn't think so but my parents had just died and I didn't want to get behind on his grooming so I went with it). We asked them to groom his face and they left it long. They didn't even trim the dirty parts of his beard. At the next grooming I gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried one more time. I knew 100% that the dog wasn't matted. I keep him at less than a 1/2 inch of hair and like it trimmed to 1/4 inch. I've known the dog since he was a puppy and never once been told he was matted. Poodles have an under coat. They are water dogs that's how they stay dry. The only tangles were behind his ears. We asked for the same length all the way around with special attention to his ears and face. He also had a cyst on his back that we asked them not to clip. We said the only way to trim it was with scissors. He had seen the vet the week before who agreed the dog wasn't matted and that the groomer should avoid the cyst (I asked him specifically). Once again they shaved him to the skin because he was "matted" and cut the cyst with clippers!! They didn't trim his face or ears and left all the tangles behind his ears. He needed antibiotics for the cut and major surgery. I have photos of the wound. I ended up with a huge vet bill and traumatized my older dog. I called to complain and asked them why they used clippers over the cyst and didn't trim his face. They were rude and blamed me for not giving better instructions. They said I could bring him back so they could clip his face but there's no way I would do that. A) they injured my dog and B) if you aren't capable of doing it right two times in a row no way am I bringing him back. We have since taken him to Show Dogs and they were amazing. Trimmed him exactly the way we asked THE FIRST TIME. Agree that the dog wasn't matted. You get what you pay for at Zimmer's. I would rather pay an extra $30 and avoid a vet bill and trauma to my sweet dog. read more

I took my dogs here for a bath. It was great! My 2 large dogs came out looking and smelling great. I was worried they would not take one of my dogs, because he has aggression towards other dogs, but they had no problem and made sure to keep him away from the other dogs in the facility.
