There is always a cafe car and real perk is they serve Starbucks coffee. It's now all cashless. Have also taken the late train out of NYC that has a dining car. You are served with China, sterling silver flatware and coffee pot and white table linens. Have recently taken the train out of the downtown station. The train left after 4am and we were in NYC between noon and 1pm. It was the perfect option for our transatlantic cruise that was departing at 7pm. The cruise port is only 2 miles away but with Manhattan traffic it was 20-25 minutes. For most of the ride I was able to have my own seat so was able to nap. Once we got to Poughkeepsie every seat was filled. When we arrived in NYC there were a good number of conductors to easily guide you in the right directions.

Our Daughter who is 16, was traveling alone to Chicago. We were really nervous about her taking the…read moretrain, in this current political climate. Especially, to Union Station in Chicago. She is a US citizen, but we still were unsure of what she would be walking into. Her train left at 11pm, and was due to arrive at 11am the next day. We arrived an hour early, per the instructions. The train station in Rochester is very small, and since we had our tickets. We discovered it really wasn't necessary to show up that early, at this time. We spoke to the conductor about our nerves. really nice, and put us at ease. Also, looking around we saw a lot of young people, traveling. Mostly college age. Usually train stations are sketchy looking places, but this is well lit. The staff is friendly, and seems trained really well. The only sketch thing that happened is a woman came in who appeared to be on drugs. She went to their window. She was not traveling with them. But they did a great job of quietly speaking to her with respect, giving her enough assistance to get her to leave. She was stumbling a bit and nodding out at times. They gave her directions, and told her to be safe. I could tell that they were not annoyed by her, but rather worried instead. She was an older woman. It put me at ease, they handled it quickly, and with respect to all people. The woman left, she was nice, and seemed appreciative of the advice they gave her. I didn't hear the conversation. But could tell some from body language. Our daughter left without incident. We had her on location, so we knew where she was at all times. She was met on the other side without incident. She did say the Chicago Union Station was huge, and when she first departed the train was a bit nervous, but saw her friend's parents very quickly. She said the ride was without incident and went well. I think she will be using the train more often, as she ages.

It's accessible, spacious, modern and the granite gray that all the cool designers are using these days. LCD tvs and wifi are also awesome additions. The old train station was deemed a heritage building in the 1970's. A truly lovely space, indeed Bellevillians and travellers to Quinte needed something bigger. This new train station is barely functional. Crossing the tracks over a newly constructed passenger bridge is a pain. More seats would also be useful. The reno cost a cool 18 mill with a bit of cash kicked in care of Canada's Economic Action Plan. As slick as this place is, it's hard to believe that it cost 18 million. With the lack of outlets, not even a vending machine for snacks and newly paid parking (awful for a small town, who pays for parking?!). The absolute worst is that train service to Belleville was cut dramatically just a few months before the reno was complete.

Pumpkin Patch Train Ride Is a fun activity for the whole family. I love train rides, and this one…read moredid not dissapoint, although the actual ride is short. At the train station there are restrooms, gift shop, food vendor and a petting pet area. The ride go to the train museum where several train cabooses are on display and one can climb up and explore. The pumpkin patch is a small area to play. Hot cider and donuts are sold and there are plenty of tables and benches to rest and savor these goodies. A train model exhibit is monitor and kept by the volunteers. A fun filled Autumn morning.

Rides are every half hour and advance ticket purchases can be purchased online. We rode the open air car for about 10 mins then it reverses backwards towards the train displays. We got off and walked around the grounds. There were two rows of trains to view/photo ops. Inside the building there were two train cars we could walk through and a nice model train display. Plus, they offered complimentary animal crackers and juice for kids. Outside around the corner is another car you can enter where a nice gentleman with a wealth of knowledge explains the history of the signals and levers. It's small quarters so only one family is allowed in at a time. They also have a small area called the pumpkin patch where your ticket includes a pumpkin to take home for each kid. When the next group was dropped off, we waited to board again to take us back to the original loading spot. Same route. Overall, a nice first time experience for the kids to ride and get up close to trains.

That means take time to look around you and up to see stunning views. As a station, Union Station is often clean. There are plenty of shops and places to sit and rest. They also have art exhibits throughout. The subway and express train to the Pearson Airport connect to Union Station making it easy to explore!

It was easy to take the TTC subway to Union Station, and the station itself was easy to navigate thanks to the numerous signs throughout. One tip: check the departure screens for platform information, as your train's platform may not be posted until closer to departure time. It was a little difficult to find staff when I had questions, but fellow travelers were generally friendly and willing to help. The station is beautiful and has many shops to browse while waiting for your train. I also found the train fares to be reasonable.

We went west on Amtrak and had to board at Depew [Buffalo] to continue westward to Chicago, then transfer/board another westbound train to the West Coast.
